Numerical Study Of The Phase Behavior Of Rod-Like Colloidal Particles With Attractive Tips, Justin T. Jack, Paul C. Millett
Numerical Study Of The Phase Behavior Of Rod-Like Colloidal Particles With Attractive Tips, Justin T. Jack, Paul C. Millett
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Suspensions of anisometric particles are known to self-assemble into various liquid crystal (LC) phases, namely, the nematic, smectic (A or B or both), and in some cases, columnar phases, due to the effects of excluded volume. For some applications, LC phases with higher degrees of order are desired, but due to the fact that these phases generally exist at larger volume fractions, they can be difficult to handle experimentally. Here, we explore the effect of a weak attractive interaction localized at the tips of rod-like particles on the phase behavior of these suspensions. We perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of …

Temporal action proposal generation (TAPG) aims to estimate temporal intervals of actions in untrimmed videos, which is a challenging yet plays an important role in many tasks of video analysis and understanding. Despite the great achievement in TAPG, most existing works ignore the human perception of interaction between agents and the surrounding environment by applying a deep learning model as a black-box to the untrimmed videos to extract video visual representation. Therefore, it is beneficial and potentially improves the performance of TAPG if we can capture these interactions between agents and the environment. In this paper, we propose a novel …

An Active Hybrid Modulation Strategy For A Si/Sic Hybrid Multilevel Converter, Fei Diao, Yufei Li, Xinyuan Du, Yue Zhao
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper proposes a hybrid modulation strategy for a medium-voltage hybrid seven-level (7-L) converter, which consists of a three-phase silicon (Si) IGBT-based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) stage and a cascaded silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET-based H-bridge (HB) stage in each phase. Within the framework of the proposed modulation strategy, three floating HB converters are controlled using a high-frequency three-level (3-L) space-vector-modulation (SVM), while a low-frequency modulation is applied to the ANPC converter. To regulate the DC voltages across floating capacitors, a zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) injection method is adopted. The proposed method possesses three major advantages. First, it enables the simplification from a 7-L …
Clustering Hypergraphs Via The Mapequation, Matthew Swan, Justin Zhan
Clustering Hypergraphs Via The Mapequation, Matthew Swan, Justin Zhan
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A hypergraph is a generalization of a graph in that the restriction of pairwise affinity scores is lifted in favor of affinity scores that can be evaluated between an arbitrary number of inputs. Hypergraphs clustering is the process of finding groups in which members of a given hypergraph exhibit a high similarity and dissimilarity with members outside their group. In this paper, we generalize the well-known MapEquation, an optimization equation used in the clustering of nonhypergraphs, for hypergraphs. We develop an agglomerative algorithm, Hypergraph Random Walks (HRW), to find an approximate solution to the generalized MapEquation. Our algorithm requires neither …
Multidimensional Demographic Profiles For Fair Paper Recommendation, Reem Alsaffar, Susan Gauch
Multidimensional Demographic Profiles For Fair Paper Recommendation, Reem Alsaffar, Susan Gauch
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite double-blind peer review, bias affects which papers are selected for inclusion in conferences and journals. To address this, we present fair algorithms that explicitly incorporate author diversity in paper recommendation using multidimensional author profiles that include five demographic features, i.e., gender, ethnicity, career stage, university rank and geolocation. The Overall Diversity method ranks papers based on an overall diversity score whereas the Multifaceted Diversity method selects papers that fill the highest-priority demographic feature first. We evaluate these algorithms with Boolean and continuous-valued features by recommending papers for SIGCHI 2017 from a pool of SIGCHI 2017, DIS 2017 and IUI …

Effects Of Resin Chemistries On The Selective Removal Of Industrially Relevant Metal Ions Using Wafer-Enhanced Electrodeionization, Humeyra B. Ulusoy Erol, Christa N. Hestekin, Jamie A. Hestekin
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wafer-enhanced electrodeionization (WE-EDI) is an electrically driven separations technology that occurs under the influence of an applied electric field and heavily depends on ion exchange resin chemistry. Unlike filtration processes, WE-EDI can be used to selectively remove ions even from high concentration systems. Because every excess ion transported increases the operating costs, the selective separation offered by WE-EDI can provide a more energy-efficient and cost-effective process, especially for highly concentrated salt solutions. This work reports the performance comparison of four commonly used cation exchange resins (Amberlite IR120 Na+, Amberlite IRP 69, Dowex MAC 3 H+, and …

Bimetallic nanoparticles comprised of iron and nickel were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated to optimize the ideal metal ratio for azo dye removal from water systems. Results show that changing the molar ratio of nickel to iron caused different removal rates, as well as the extent of overall elimination of azo dye from water. Lower molar ratios, from Ni1Fe10 to Ni2.5Fe10, exhibited a higher removal efficiency of 80–99%. Higher concentrations of Ni in the catalyst, from Ni3Fe10 to Ni5Fe10 , resulted in 70–90% removal. The lower molar ratios …

A High Efficiency And Low Cost Anpc Inverter Using Hybrid Si/Sic Switches, Dereje Woldegiorgis, Yuheng Wu, Yuqi Wei, H. Alan Mantooth
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper presents a performance investigation and design optimization of a high efficiency three-level Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC) inverter topology using hybrid Si/SiC switches. It uses a modulation strategy that produces a cluster of low frequency switches commutating at fundamental line frequency (realized with Si IGBTs) and high frequency switches commutating at carrier frequency (realized with hybrid Si/SiC switches) to facilitate a tradeoff between the inverter efficiency and cost. A generalized Si/SiC current rating ratio optimization algorithm is presented for the hybrid Si/SiC switches based on the power loss profile of ANPC inverter. This algorithm determines the optimal current …

The rapid development of remote sensing techniques provides rich, large-coverage, and high-temporal information of the ground, which can be coupled with the emerging deep learning approaches that enable latent features and hidden geographical patterns to be extracted. This article marks the first attempt to cross-compare performances of popular state-of-the-art deep learning models in estimating population distribution from remote sensing images, investigate the contribution of neighboring effect, and explore the potential systematic population estimation biases. We conduct an end-to-end training of four popular deep learning architectures, i.e., VGG, ResNet, Xception, and DenseNet, by establishing a mapping between Sentinel-2 image patches and …

Fractionated radiation therapy is believed to reoxygenate and subsequently radiosensitize surviving hypoxic cancer cells. Measuring tumor reoxygenation between radiation fractions could conceivably provide an early biomarker of treatment response. However, the relationship between tumor reoxygenation and local control is not well understood. We used noninvasive optical fiber-based diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to monitor radiation-induced changes in hemoglobin oxygen saturation (sO2) in tumor xenografts grown from two head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines - UM-SCC-22B and UM-SCC-47. Tumors were treated with 4 doses of 2 Gy over 2 consecutive weeks and diffuse reflectance spectra were acquired every day …

A Distance Based Multisample Test For High-Dimensional Compositional Data With Applications To The Human Microbiome, Qingyang Zhang, Thy Dao
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
Compositional data refer to the data that lie on a simplex, which are common in many scientific domains such as genomics, geology and economics. As the components in a composition must sum to one, traditional tests based on unconstrained data become inappropriate, and new statistical methods are needed to analyze this special type of data.
Results
In this paper, we consider a general problem of testing for the compositional difference between K populations. Motivated by microbiome and metagenomics studies, where the data are often over-dispersed and high-dimensional, we formulate a well-posed hypothesis from a Bayesian point of view and …

This study investigates the induction heating response of uncapped iron oxide nanoparticles sonically dispersed as a nanofluid and mechanically distributed in solid phase change materials. The nanoparticles examined have a mean diameter of 14.42 nm and are magnetically heated in an alternating magnetic field at an amplitude of 72.6 kA/m at frequencies of 217, 303, and 397 kHz. Nanoparticle characterization was undertaken through transition electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and dynamic light scattering when in suspension. Carrier fluids were characterized through viscosity, heat capacity, and density measurements which were used in the calorimetric calculation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) of …
Adhesion And Deformation Mechanisms Of Polydopamine And Polytetrafluoroethylene: A Multiscale Computational Study, Matthew Brownell
Adhesion And Deformation Mechanisms Of Polydopamine And Polytetrafluoroethylene: A Multiscale Computational Study, Matthew Brownell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Polydopamine (PDA) has been shown to bond via covalent bonding, van der Waals forces, and hydrogen bonding and is known to adhere strongly to almost any material. The application of PDA between a substrate and a PTFE surface coating has resulted in low friction and a greatly reduced wear rate. Previous research probing the capabilities and limitations of PDA/PTFE films have studied the wear and mechanical properties of the film, but the overall adhesive and deformation mechanisms remain unclear.
In this research, we investigate the tribological properties of PDA and PTFE molecules and composites from the atomic to the microscale …

Cement Stabilized Crushed Stone Base Course Strength And Stiffness Analysis, Andrew Deschenes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 70 – 80% of state departments of transportations (DOTs) utilize the 1993 AASTHO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993 AASHTO) [1] for structural design of pavements. A growing portion of DOT’s are beginning to implement the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), referred to as AASHTOWare Pavement ME [2]. The 1993 AASHTO flexible guide applies empirically derived unitless strength values referred to as structural layer coefficients and structural numbers (SN) to pavement thickness and pavement types. The 1993 AASHTO rigid flexible guide utilizes the depth and strength of the concrete pavement, with the composite spring constant (kc), which is …
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Fly Ash On Freeze-Thaw Durability Prediction, Yancy Schrader
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Fly Ash On Freeze-Thaw Durability Prediction, Yancy Schrader
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Air is purposefully entrained into concrete primarily to improve resistance to freeze-thaw deterioration while saturated with water. Air entraining admixtures (AEAs) are chemical admixtures designed to entrain air into the concrete to provide adequate resistance to the effects of freezing and thawing. One of the challenges associated with air entrainment in concrete is the interaction of an AEA with supplementary cementitious materials present in the concrete, particularly fly ash. Fly ash is a by-product of the coal fired electrical generation industry, and often contains residual unburned carbon and other components that can increase the AEA demand of a particular concrete …

Effect Of Citric Acid On Slump, Compressive Strength, And Setting Time Of Belitic Calcium Sulfoaluminate Concrete, Israel Aguilar Rosero
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement has well established advantages related to fast setting time, fast strength gain, long-term strengths, shrinkage, and sustainability. Due to its fast setting and hardening, this type of cement has historically been used to repair concrete structures, highways, and runways. This work provides much needed guidance on establishing mix design criteria for BCSA cement. Guidance is also given on the effects of set retarders on strength, slump, and setting times. Citric acid and a phosphonic acid-based admixture were tested as retarders for different concrete mixtures. Three studies were performed. In the slump study five different water …
Seismic Loading Effects Within Orthogonally Connected Steel Lateral Force Resisting Systems, Alhussin Faraj Aliwan
Seismic Loading Effects Within Orthogonally Connected Steel Lateral Force Resisting Systems, Alhussin Faraj Aliwan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Steel buildings located within seismically active regions require special design considerations to ensure public safety and prevent collapse during an extreme seismic event. Two commonly used steel systems are special moment frames (SMFs) and buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs). When two seismic systems share a common column in an orthogonal configuration (such as at a building corner), design specifications currently consider a 100+30 rule wherein the shared column is designed for 100% fuse demand in one direction, plus 30% fuse demand from the other direction. While this rule has been shown to be reasonable for elastic building response, a few studies …
Using Bcsa Cement To Repair Waterway Transportation Structures, Anazaria Johanis Ortega Gonzalez
Using Bcsa Cement To Repair Waterway Transportation Structures, Anazaria Johanis Ortega Gonzalez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many maritime structures (e.g., locks, dams, ports) in the US are either reaching or are past their design lives, and there are limited funds for the necessary maintenance activities which can lead to repairs that requires closures. These structures are not easy to detour and often require dewatering before repairs can be made, closures can cause delays and business-related losses which can have a large effect on the nation’s economy. Thus, it is advantageous to reduce the repair time for maritime structures. BCSA (belitic calcium sulfoaluminate) cement is a promising material to perform this type of repair due to its …
Leveraging Biomimicry And Additive Manufacturing To Improve Load Transfer In Brittle Materials, Ana Paula Bernardo
Leveraging Biomimicry And Additive Manufacturing To Improve Load Transfer In Brittle Materials, Ana Paula Bernardo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the emergence of Additive Manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing) in construction, new strategically designed shapes can be created to improve load transfer through structural members and foundations. Cross-sections can be optimized to carry load using less material, or even using weaker constituent materials, like soils, which are cheap and abundant. The goal of this research is to investigate the benefits of using cellular patterns which leverage biomimicry in civil engineering applications, since nature has perfectly engineered materials and patterns which carry loads with the least amount of material possible. Most of the periodic cellular work to date has focused on …
Design, Fabrication, And Reliability Effects Of Additively Manufactured First Level Compliant Interconnects For Microelectronics Application, Tumininu David Olatunji
Design, Fabrication, And Reliability Effects Of Additively Manufactured First Level Compliant Interconnects For Microelectronics Application, Tumininu David Olatunji
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor packaging and development is greatly dependent on the magnitude of interconnect and on-chip stress that ultimately limits the reliability of electronic components. Thermomechanical related strains occur because of the coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch from different conjoined materials being assembled to manufacture a device. To curb the effect of thermal expansion mismatch between conjoined parts, studies have been done in integrating compliant structures between dies, solder balls, and substrates. Initial studies have enabled the design and manufacturing of these structures using a photolithography approach which involves a high number of fabrication steps depending on the complexity of the structures …

Comparison Of Additively Manufactured And Wrought 17-4 Ph Stainless Steels In Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue, Timothy Strasser
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) processes allow for creation of complex geometries that are otherwise impractical to fabricate with traditional subtractive methods. AM technology has potential to improve the optimization of seismic lateral force resisting components which dissipate seismic energy through large plastic strains; however, the ultra low-cycle fatigue performance of AM metals are not yet well understood. Void formation during the AM fabrication process has potential to affect performance. This study compares the performance of heat-treated and non-heat-treated AM and wrought 17-4PH stainless steel in Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue. To understand ULCF performance differences between the AM and wrought specimens, post …
Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram
Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tribology is the study of surfaces where two objects are sliding against another. Significant energy is lost due to friction between the sliding surfaces. Therefore, developing or designing surfaces to minimize friction is critical for the durability and reliability of the mechanical components. Several researchers have identified that surface texturing at the nanoscale (nanotexture) would reduce the friction between the contacting surfaces. The nanotextured surfaces have several applications in microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems. This dissertation employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the frictional and mechanical response of nanotextured aluminum (Al) and Al/amorphous silicon (a-Si) composite surfaces.
This study determines …
Numerical Simulations Of Directed Self-Assembly Methods In Di-Block Copolymer Films For Efficient Manufacturing Of Nanoscale Patterns With Long-Range Order, Joseph Hill
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) has been shown as a viable method to achieve bulk fabrication of surface patterns with feature sizes smaller than those available through traditional photolithography. Under appropriate thermodynamic conditions, BCPs will self-assemble into ordered micro-domain morphologies, a desirable feature for many applications. One of the primary interests in this field of research is the application of thin-film BCPs to existing photolithography techniques. This “bottom-up” approach utilizes the self-assembled BCP nanostructures as a sacrificial templating layer in the lithographic process.
While self-assembly occurs spontaneously, extending orientational uniformity over centimeter-length scales remains a critical challenge. A …
Application Of Percentage Within Limits Concepts On A Balanced Mix Design Of Asphalt Mixtures, Elvis Alexander Castillo Camarena
Application Of Percentage Within Limits Concepts On A Balanced Mix Design Of Asphalt Mixtures, Elvis Alexander Castillo Camarena
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many agencies have incorporated rutting, and more recently cracking, laboratory test requirements in the design process of asphalt mixtures. The objective of each additional specification is to produce a balance between the stability and durability of the final product. Although a performance-engineered mixture design (PEMD), denoted here as a balanced mix design (BMD), offers compelling benefits, there is concern regarding the compatibility of the BMD with current construction practices. The objective of this work is to correlate a BMD method with realistic binder content construction tolerances by applying the concepts of a percent-within-limits (PWL) approach to field QC/QA. First, Chapter …

Behavior Of Concrete Structures Reinforced With High Strength Steel, Rahman S. Kareem
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The structural strength and corrosion resistance of concrete members are improved when A1035 steel is used as the main reinforcement. The enhancement of A1035 is achieved by the modification of the composition and microstructure of the steel. Therefore, the behavior of concrete structures reinforced with high-performance steel (A1035) is different from those reinforced with the regular steel (A615). Concrete bridge decks reinforced with different amounts of A1035 were studied in this research program. The structural behavior of twelve concrete bridge decks reinforced with A615 Grade 420 (60 ksi) and A1035 Grade 830 (120 ksi) steel was investigated at both service …
A Methodological Framework To Evaluate Community Perceptions Of Economic And Safety Impacts Attributed To Highway Bypass And Widening Projects, Karla Diaz-Corro
A Methodological Framework To Evaluate Community Perceptions Of Economic And Safety Impacts Attributed To Highway Bypass And Widening Projects, Karla Diaz-Corro
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Transportation practitioners have proposed the construction of highway bypass and widening projects in rural communities to address traffic-related problems that include noise pollution and congestion, among others. In the past, the construction of bypass projects has led community residents to raise concerns about potential decreases in business activity for businesses located along the bypassed road. For transportation organizations, it is essential to understand the economic, social, and safety impacts of transportation projects in terms of public perceptions as public input is a required part of the project planning phase. Moreover, it is recommended that agencies perform retrospective analyses of project …
