Analysis Of Strain Transfer To Fbg’S For Sensorized Telerobotic End-Effector Applications, Dean Callaghan, Mark Mcgrath, Ginu Rajan, Eugene Coyle, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell

Books/Book chapters

Sensorized instruments which cater for the measurement of interaction forces during surgical procedures are not available on current commercial Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgical (MIRS) systems. This paper investigates the ef-fectiveness of advanced optical sensing technology (Fiber Bragg Grating) as sur-gical end effector strain/force sensors. The effects of adhesive bonding layer thickness and length are specifically addressed owing to their importance for ef-fective strain transfer and ensuring compactness of the resulting sensing arrange-ment. The strain transfer characteristics of the compound sensing arrangement are evaluated by the examination of shear transfer through the fiber coating and adhe-sive layers. Detailed analysis of the …

Performance Monitoring Of Cover-Zone Concrete, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Niall Holmes, Muhammed Basheer Jun 2009

Performance Monitoring Of Cover-Zone Concrete, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Niall Holmes, Muhammed Basheer

Conference papers

The concrete cover-zone is a major factor governing the degradation of concrete structures as it provides the only barrier to aggressive agents which initiate corrosion of the reinforcement. Knowledge of the protective qualities of cover-zone concrete is critical in attempting to make predictions as to the in-service performance of the structure with regard to likely deterioration rates for a particular exposure condition and compliance with specified design life. To this end, a multi-electrode array was used to study the surface 50mm of concrete specimens thereby allowing a detailed picture of the response of the covercrete to the changing environment. In …

Conductivity Sensors To Monitor Cover-Zone Performance, W. J. Mccarter, T. M. Chrisp, G. Starrs, E. Owens, Niall Holmes, L. Basheer, S. V. Nanukuttan, M. Basheer

Conference papers

This paper presents developments in the use of an embedded, multi-electrode conductivity sensor to study the response of the concrete cover-zone to environmental action. The sensor enables an evaluation of the temporal and spatial variation of electrical conductivity thereby allowing an integrated assessment of the cover-zone. Conductivity sensors were embedded within concrete samples to study the cover-zone response to cyclic wetting and drying under laboratory conditions. This work was extended to include the use of remote interrogation methods to study samples placed at a marine exposure site and preliminary results are presented.

Diffusion And Fractional Diffusion Based Image Processing, Jonathan Blackledge Jun 2009

Diffusion And Fractional Diffusion Based Image Processing, Jonathan Blackledge

Conference papers

We consider the background to describing strong scattering in terms of diffusive processes based on the diffusion equation. Intermediate strength scattering is then considered in terms of a fractional diffusion equation which is studied using results from fractional calculus. This approach is justified in terms of the generalization of a random walk model with no statistical bias in the phase to a random walk that has a phase bias and is thus, only ‘partially’ or ‘fractionally’ diffusive. A Green’s function solution to the fractional diffusion equation is studied and a result derived that provides a model for an incoherent image …

Performance Study Of A Cross-Layer Optimization To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan, Mark Davis Jun 2009

Performance Study Of A Cross-Layer Optimization To The Dsr Routing Protocol In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mustafa Ramadhan, Mark Davis

Conference papers

A cross-layer modification to the DSR protocol is presented in this work which is intended to enhance the global throughput performance of wireless mesh networks. This modification involves the use of an access efficiency factor (which is a measure of the local availability of bandwidth at a node) as an alternative metric to the hop-count metric in order to allow for improved routing selection. The key feature of this modified route selection procedure is that it attempts to discover paths that have a large availability of bandwidth which can support high throughputs. In this work we have employed the OPNET …

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow Jun 2009

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow

Books/Book chapters

Since the publication of the UN climate report in 2007, most countries now agree that recent climate change has occurred as a result of human intervention and that it will require fast and profound measures to reduce this negative imprint imposed upon nature. Central to this is the need to radically reduce CO2 emissions resulting from combustion of carbon-based energy resources to meet global energy demands. Greater measures must be taken to develop new non-combustion based technologies, in addition to using low-carbon energy resources. Increasing energy efficiency and using energy wisely will also feature in reducing emissions. Sustain-able Energy is …

The work presented in this thesis is validated in experiments using 130 realworld field recordings of traditional music from sessions, classes, concerts and commercial recordings. Test audio includes solo and ensemble playing on a variety of instruments recorded in real-world settings such as noisy public sessions. Results are reported using standard measures from the field of information retrieval (IR) including accuracy, error, precision and recall and the system is compared to alternative approaches for CBMIR common in the literature.

Inverse Scattering Solutions For Side-Band Signals, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo Jun 2009

Inverse Scattering Solutions For Side-Band Signals, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo

Conference papers

When a signal is recorded that has been physically generated by some scattering process (the interaction of electromagnetic waves with an inhomogeneous dielectric, for example), the `standard model' for the signal (i.e. information content convolved with a characteristic Impulse Response Function) is usually based on a single scattering approximation. An additive noise term is introduced into the model to take into account a range of non-deterministic factors including multiple scattering that, along with electronic noise and other background noise sources, is assumed to be relatively weak. Thus, the standard model is based on a `weak field condition' and the inverse …

Combined Heat And Power In The Irish Market, Barry Cullen, Jim Mcgovern May 2009

Combined Heat And Power In The Irish Market, Barry Cullen, Jim Mcgovern

Other resources

Combined Heat and Power (CHP) production offers significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency and CO2 abatement and is generally considered to be a key technology in the move towards sustainable energy in Ireland. As a distributed generation technology it immediately benefits from reduced transmission and distribution losses, and as a combined generator its total plant efficiency indicates a significant decrease in fuel costs and a reduction in harmful emissions. The corresponding positive effect on energy security through reduced consumption is notable also. It therefore holds a significant place in the country’s future energy strategy. The present work offers a …

Temperature Induced Instabilities In Macro-Bend Fiber Based Wavelength Measurement Systems, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell May 2009

Temperature Induced Instabilities In Macro-Bend Fiber Based Wavelength Measurement Systems, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

An investigation of temperature-induced instabilities in a wavelength measurement system based on macro-bend fiber filter used in the ratiometric scheme are presented. Two wavelength measurement systems based on macro-bend fiber, a standard low bend loss single-mode fiber filter based system and a high bend loss fiber filter based system are considered. In the case of a low bend loss fiber filter based system, the oscillatory variation in the ratio response with temperature and the difference in the temperature-induced ratio variation at different wavelengths makes the temperature corrected calibration of the system unfeasible, which is essential for precise wavelength measurements. The …

Testing And Monitoring Concrete Using Novel Methods For Predicting Their Long Term Behaviour, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Muhammed Basheer, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs May 2009

Testing And Monitoring Concrete Using Novel Methods For Predicting Their Long Term Behaviour, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Muhammed Basheer, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs

Conference papers

It is widely recognised that durability of concrete depends on its transport properties, viz. absorption, diffusion and permeability. As concrete cover provides the first line of defence against the ingress of many deleterious substances into the concrete, a measure of its transport properties is vital in assessing its long term performance in the given exposure condition. In new structures the rate of ingress of the deleterious substances could be monitored using array of electrical sensors which are embedded in the cover concrete. For structures which are currently in service, two in situ permeability apparatuses, viz. Autoclam Permeability System (for measuring …

The Probabilistic Integration Of Demand-Side Load And Generation In A Representative Irish Distribution Network, Keith Sunderland, Michael Conlon May 2009

The Probabilistic Integration Of Demand-Side Load And Generation In A Representative Irish Distribution Network, Keith Sunderland, Michael Conlon

Conference papers

This paper introduces a methodology for investigating the behaviour of a distribution network incorporating both load variations and variable micro-wind generation output. The probabilistic methodology is applied to a representative model of the Irish Distribution Network. Application of a selection of commercially available micro-wind turbines to the model is investigated for a range of load and generation scenarios based on a standard load profile and varying mean wind speed. Analysis of the results of the analysis forms the basis for defining the limitations of the methodology but also presents the opportunities for future work.

Reflection Contributions To The Dispersion Artefact In Ftir Spectra Of Single Biological Cells, Paul Bassan, Hugh Byrne, Joe Lee, Franck Bonnier, Colin Clarke, Paul Dumas, Ehsan Gazi, Michael Brown, Noel Clarke, Peter Gardner Apr 2009

Reflection Contributions To The Dispersion Artefact In Ftir Spectra Of Single Biological Cells, Paul Bassan, Hugh Byrne, Joe Lee, Franck Bonnier, Colin Clarke, Paul Dumas, Ehsan Gazi, Michael Brown, Noel Clarke, Peter Gardner

Articles

Fourier transform infrared spectra of a single cell in transflection geometry are seen to vary significantly with position on the cell, showing a distorted derivative-like lineshape in the region of the optically dense nucleus. A similar behaviour is observable in a model system of the protein albumin doped in a potassium bromide disk. It is demonstrated that the spectrum at any point is a weighted sum of the sample reflection and transmission and that the dominance of the reflection spectrum in optically dense regions can account for some of the spectral distortions previously attributed to dispersion artefacts. Rather than being …

Embodied Energy Analysis: A Sustainable Construction Design Assessment Tool, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu Apr 2009

Embodied Energy Analysis: A Sustainable Construction Design Assessment Tool, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Conference Papers

Embodied energy analysis can be used as a construction design assessment tool in a sustainable matrix for a building. Its implementation however remains challenging mainly because of data measurement errors. A comparison between the deterministic embodied energy (EE) of a building and the stochastic EE of the same building undertaken using Monte Carlo simulation showed a wide variation in results. It is recommended that the specification of EE intensity of building materials in the construction industry can assist in producing accurate and more credible EE values of building.

Digital Supply Chains: Towards A Framework For Software Distribution, Colm Ryan, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Edward Sweeney, Emilio Esposito, Pietro Evangelista

Conference papers

This paper assesses the effect of non-physicality of a digital product - software - on SCM practice. A number of in-depth, one-on-one interviews were held in 8 software companies that predominantly supply to enterprise customers on a global scale. The aim was to explore distribution challenges within software supply chains and how companies are addressing these challenges. The research has identified three different classes of software distribution models: One, which tends to rely on traditional physical infrastructures and paradigms, and two others that better exploit the properties of the digital products.

Implications Of Philosophy For Engineering And Engineering Technology Bachelors Programs, Michael Dyrenfurth, Mike Murphy, William Grimson

Conference papers

This paper raises the question: What is philosophy and then, after describing its branches and school, it extends the definitions to implications for the practice of engineering and engineering technology education. It folds the definitions against the work of engineering faculty. The latter was described as including curriculum development, teaching, mentoring/advising, research/scholarship, and engagement. Sample codes of ethics are shared for engineering technology students and professionals.

Opinion Mining With The Sentwordnet Lexical Resource, Bruno Ohana Mar 2009

Opinion Mining With The Sentwordnet Lexical Resource, Bruno Ohana

Dissertations

Sentiment classification concerns the application of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of sentiment present on text documents. It is an important subject in opinion mining research, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is a lexical resource of sentiment information for terms in the English language designed to assist in opinion mining tasks, where each term is associated with numerical scores for positive and negative sentiment information. A resource that makes term level sentiment information readily available could be of use in building more effective sentiment classification methods. …

Localization Quality Assessment In Source Separation-Based Upmixing Algorithms, Dan Barry, Gavin Kearney Feb 2009

Localization Quality Assessment In Source Separation-Based Upmixing Algorithms, Dan Barry, Gavin Kearney

Conference papers

In this paper we explore the source localisation accuracy and perceived spatial distortion of a source separation based upmix algorithm for 2 to 5 channel conversion. Unlike traditional upmixing techniques, source separation based techniques allow individual sources to be separated from the mixture and repositioned independently within the surround sound field. Generally, spectral artefacts and source interference generated during the source separation process are masked when the upmixed sound field is presented in its entirety; however, this can lead to perceived spatial distortion and ambiguous source localisation. Here, we use subjective testing to compare the localisation perceived on a purposely …

A Macrobending Singlemode Fiber Based Refractometer, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell, Yungqiang Ti, Jie Zheng Jan 2009

A Macrobending Singlemode Fiber Based Refractometer, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell, Yungqiang Ti, Jie Zheng

Articles

A novel macrobending based all-fiber refractometer sensor with a simple optical configuration is proposed and investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The proposed fiber refractometer sensor consists of a single loop structure of bare macrobending standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) with a selected bending radius and reduced cladding diameter. The well-known scalar approximation theory is employed to theoretically predict the characteristics of the proposed fiber refractometer sensor. An approach to improve the resolution of the refractometer is presented, which shows that the refractometer with a reduced cladding diameter of 81 μm has an experimentally verified resolution of 5.75105 for a refractive index …

Analysis And Performance Evaluation Of An All-Fiber Wide Range Interrogation System For A Bragg Grating Sensor Array, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell Jan 2009

Analysis And Performance Evaluation Of An All-Fiber Wide Range Interrogation System For A Bragg Grating Sensor Array, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Analysis and performance evaluation of a macro-bend ¯ber based interrogation system for a Bragg grating sensor array is presented. Due to the characteristic properties of the macro-bend ¯ber ¯lter such as polarization and temperature dependence and the total noise associated with the ratiometric system, a best ¯t ratio slope is required to interrogate multiple FBGs whose peak wavelengths are spread over a wide wavelength range, rather than the optimal slope for individual FBG. In this paper for investigation we have used an FBG array with 5 FBGs with peak re°ected wavelengths lying between 1525 nm and 1575 nm. The analysis …

Ultrasonic Angioplasty: Assessing The Risk Of Arterial Perforation, Mark Wylie, Garrett Mcguinness, Graham Gavin

Conference Papers

Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease that effects large and medium muscular arteries (such as coronary and iliac) and also large elastic arteries (such as aorta) [1]. It causes thickening of the arterial wall and over time can result in a completely blocked artery or chronic total occlusion (CTO). While the majority of atherosclerotic lesions can be attempted by typical Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) such as balloon and stent implantation, calcified CTOs are often problematic as they do not lend themselves to be accessed by the guidewire which is required to implant the balloon and stent. Excessive guidewire pushing force …
