Intelligent Simulation-Based Lot Scheduling Of Photolithography Toolsets In A Wafer Fabrication Facility, Amr Arisha, Paul Young Dec 2004

Intelligent Simulation-Based Lot Scheduling Of Photolithography Toolsets In A Wafer Fabrication Facility, Amr Arisha, Paul Young

Conference papers

Scheduling of a semiconductor manufacturing facility is one of the most complex tasks encountered. Confronted with a high technology product market, semiconductor manufacturing is increasingly more dynamic and competitive in the introduction of new products in shorter time intervals. Photolithography, being one of the processes repeated often, is a fabrication bottleneck. Lot scheduling within photolithography is a challenging activity where substantial improvements in factory performance can be made. The proposed scheduling methodology integrates two common approaches, simulation and artificial intelligence. Using detailed simulation modeling within a structured modeling method, a comprehensive model to characterize the photolithography process was developed. An …

Local Model Network Application In Control, Ruiyao Gao Nov 2004

Local Model Network Application In Control, Ruiyao Gao

Doctoral

The local model (LM) network is considered for the control of complex nonlinear systems. Both controller design and system analysis techniques are investigated for the Purpose of the development of an overall global controller with guaranteed stability and performance, based on the control methods and theories well developed for linear systems. In particular, the influence of the offset term of affine LM networks on the performance and stability of closed-loop systems is investigated. Assuming the system changes ‘slowly’ enough, an integrator can be utilised in the controller design by considering the offset term as ‘constant’. Gain-scheduled local controller (LC) networks …

Peer-To-Peer Searching And Sharing Of Electronic Documents, Paul Stacey Oct 2004

Peer-To-Peer Searching And Sharing Of Electronic Documents, Paul Stacey

Masters

Peer-to-peer systems have existed since the first incarnation of the Internet. In recent times the Internet has taken on a more hierarchical form, power has been taken away from the individual and placed in the hands of operators of large servers. However, with the re-emergence of p2p the individual is gaining more freedom. End users attached to the Internet now have the power to host and publish content through the user of p2p technologies. Peer-to-peer systems present significant design challenges and have opened up a floodgate of research in an effort to overcome some of the fundamental problems. This thesis …

Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain Sep 2004

Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain

Reports

Sustainable water technology is concerned with the complete range of technologies, techniques, products and processes that will enable humankind to reduce the impact of water production and water consumption on the environment and to establish a more sustainable mode of development. The concept of sustainable development has gained wide usage over the past 15 years in an attempt to balance development needs and environmental protection. The Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future (1987) identified sustainable development as a global objective, which involved economic, social and environmental values. It defined sustainable development as ‘ …

A Multi-Criteria Approach To The Evaluation Of Aviation E-Marketplace Portals, Edward Sweeney, Emilio Esposito, Pietro Evangelista, Michel Mastroianni, Renato Passaro, Claudia-Maria Wagner

Conference papers

After a proliferation of logistics e-Marketplaces during the dot.com boom of 1998-2000, there has been a high rate of failure and survivals are developing much more slowly than expected. This is the case of aviation industry where a large number of B2B e-Marketplaces emerged according to the focus of aviation companies’ strategies on electronic B2B in the late 1990s. However, the current use of e-Marketplaces in the industry is low and many of them have ceased trading. The traditional e-Marketplaces model have been characterised by poor quality of portals and the lack of technical standards. Such an approach is unsustainable …

Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor Aug 2004

Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor

Conference Papers

Many biological and astronomical forms can be best represented by ellipses. While some more complex curves might represent the shape more accurately, ellipses have the advantage that they are easily parameterised and define the location, orientation and dimensions of the data more clearly. In this paper, we present a method of direct least-squares ellipse fitting by solving a generalised eigensystem. This is more efficient and more accurate than many alternative approaches to the ellipse-fitting problem such as fuzzy c-shells clustering and Hough transforms. This method was developed for human body modelling as part of a larger project to design a …

Pressure Distribution Around Spherical Distal Ball-Tip In Ultrasound Angioplasty, Graham Gavin, Garrett B. Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. J. Hashmi Jul 2004

Pressure Distribution Around Spherical Distal Ball-Tip In Ultrasound Angioplasty, Graham Gavin, Garrett B. Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. J. Hashmi

Conference Papers

INTRODUCTION Ultrasound Angioplasty has been shown to be effective in the removal and re-canalising of blockages in arteries (Siegel RJ, 1993). By delivering therapeutic ultrasound to the blockage, via a wire waveguide to a ball-tip, the lesion or thrombus is affected by pressure waves, micro streaming, cavitation and direct contact with the oscillating ball-tip. Most work to date has concentrated on a spherical ball-tip geometry at the distal end of the wire waveguide (Steffen, 1994 and Rosenschein, 1996). Tip displacements usually lie between 10 - 100m (peak-to peak) and ball tip diameters between 1 - 2mm (Atar, 1999 and Yock, …

A New High Power Parallel Converter Scheme For Active Power Filters, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey Jul 2004

A New High Power Parallel Converter Scheme For Active Power Filters, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey

Articles

A new topology for efficient utilisation of parallel converters as VAR compensators and active power filters (APF) for high power loads is proposed. Because of limited power handling capacity of individual devices, paralleling is the choice to increase rating of equipment, while keeping the THD of the current at the PCC within the agency specified standards. It has been reported in the literature that paralleling several converters, rather than switches, is more reliable in sharing of load. From this perspective, multilevel converters carry lot of weight, as their typical power circuit configuration limits the stress on individual devices to an …

Simple Feature Identification And Matching For Stereoscopic Imaging, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor Jun 2004

Simple Feature Identification And Matching For Stereoscopic Imaging, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor

Conference Papers

Many camera calibration techniques used in stereoscopic imaging require corresponding points in image pairs to be identified. The best matches tend to come from very distinctive regions, hence it is preferable to use only these points and reject points from more homogeneous regions. Often points are selected and matched by a combination of user input and automated matching. However, for most techniques, the more matching points identified, the more accurate and robust the calibration. Therefore, it is desirable to alleviate the need for user input and to automate the point selection process. In the feature matching technique described here, a …

A System For Monitoring Pressures And Spinal Curvature In Spinally Injured People Immobilised On A Spinal Raft, Ruairí De Fréin, Eoin Flinn, Ted Burke May 2004

A System For Monitoring Pressures And Spinal Curvature In Spinally Injured People Immobilised On A Spinal Raft, Ruairí De Fréin, Eoin Flinn, Ted Burke

Articles

We present a system designed to study the pressure at various ‘hot spots’ on the back of the body and the deformation of the spine experienced by a patient when strapped to a spinal board, and the potential alleviation of both by the addition of an inflatable “spinal raft” (or other similar device). In measuring pressure we devised a system of air-filled sacks interfaced with a PC. Each sack, placed under a particular key point on the body, is inflated until its faces just begin to separate and a switch thereby opens. The pressure reading is then captured and displayed …

A Vocalisation-Based Drawing Interface For Disabled Children, Ted Burke May 2004

A Vocalisation-Based Drawing Interface For Disabled Children, Ted Burke

Articles

In our work with disabled children at Ireland’s National Rehabilitation Hospital, a problem we have experienced in the facilitation of art activities is that traditional art materials and standard computer drawing programs sometimes prove inaccessible. In this paper, an original system, called “PaintMyVoice” is presented which facilitates the creation of two or three-dimensional images using a variety of novel input modalities. In particular, vocalisations can be used to create original images of a variety of objects, including trees, flowers and landscape elements. Additional input to the system can optionally be provided via mouse, keyboard, switch interface or digital camera depending …

Investigation Of Novel Liquid Crystal Materials For Their Possible Applications, Minseok Chang

Masters

In this thesis I present four main topics. One is an introduction to liquid crystals and the second is an opto-electronic experimental setup. The third is an investigation of the dynamic properties of dendrimers, which show ferroelectric features. The last one is a research focused on understanding of the structures of two different types of De Vries smectic A liquid crystal phases. All research activities are performed by the hand-made but automatically controlled opto-electronic experimental setup. First, an introduction to liquid crystals is presented in easy language. Mainly there are two kinds of liquid crystals, thermotropic and lyotropic, but I …

A Differentiated Services Architecture For Quality Of Service Provisioning In Wireless Local Area Networks, Tristan Raimondi Mar 2004

A Differentiated Services Architecture For Quality Of Service Provisioning In Wireless Local Area Networks, Tristan Raimondi

Masters

Currently the issue of Quality of Service (QoS) is a major problem in IP networks due to the growth in multimedia traffic (e.g. voice and video applications) and therefore many mechanisms like IntServ, DiffServ, etc. have been proposed. Since the IEEE 802.11b (or Wi-Fi) standard was approved in 1999, it has gained in popularity to become the leading Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology with millions of such networks deployed worldwide. Wireless networks have a limited capacity (11 Mbits/s in the case of Wi-Fi networks) owing to the limited amount of frequency spectrum available. At any given time there may …

Design And Development Of A Respiratory Monitoring Device To Be Used In Conjuction With Mri Scanners, Aidan Mcnally

Masters

The aim of this project was to design and manufacture a respiratory monitoring device that operates in conjunction with MRI scanners to produce higher quality images. The resultant quality of many MRI images depends on how well the patient can control their breathing activity. This research has been successful in designing and manufacturing a device that can be used to teach patients how to hold their breath correctly prior to scanning and also provide them with feedback about their breathing activity during the scan The project involved research into MRI technology and the materials that can still be used in …

Mechano-Biological Interactions Of Endothelial Cells, Claire Brougham, Karen Coughlan, Valerie Barron, Peter Mchugh

Conference Papers

Atherosclerosis is an ever-increasing cause of morbidity in the western world. Current surgical treatments include bypass grafts and coronary artery stents. However, there is still a need for alternative approaches especially for those who cannot receive conventional therapy. Tissue engineering is one such approach that may hold the key to the repair and regeneration. Tissue engineering is one such approach that may hold the key to the repair and regeneration of coronary arteries. Nevertheless, many questions need to be answered before a vialbe vascular tissie with the inherent properties of native tissue becomes a real contender with the surgical therapies …

Harmonic Sound Source Separation Using Fir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Harmonic Sound Source Separation Using Fir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A technique for separating harmonic sound sources using FIR comb filters is presented. First, a pre-processing task is performed by a multipitch estimator to detect the pitches that the signal is composed of. Then, a method based on the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is utilized to iteratively extract the harmonics belonging to a given source by using FIR comb filters. The presented approach improves upon exising sinusoidal model approaches in terms of the perceptual quality of the extracted signal.

Time-Frequency Analysis Applied To Autonomic Nervous System Activity In A Biofeedback Environment, James Condron Jan 2004

Time-Frequency Analysis Applied To Autonomic Nervous System Activity In A Biofeedback Environment, James Condron

Doctoral

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is a subconscious system within the peripheral nervous system that controls such things as heart rate, respiration, baroreceptor control, sweating, and regulation of internal organs. Certain aspects of this system can be under conscious control given time and practices. The ANS may be further divided into two subsections, namely the Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) and Parasympathetic ( Rest and Digest) nervous system. These systems work symbiotically; however they have almost opposite effects on organs within the body. Within this project a compelling biofeedback game was built with a protocol whereby the users used their relaxation …

Analysis Of Data Sets Using Trio Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Analysis Of Data Sets Using Trio Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

Recent advances in technology have suggested that sound and audio play a far greater part in our daily working lives than ever before. Mobile phone ring tones are now based upon polyphonic music sequences that allow relatively complex audio to be generated from a handset by way of conveying information (i.e. a call or message is incoming). This real world example of sonification suggests that far more could be made of sonification techniques for analysis- particularly in the business environment. One advantage of sonification is its relatively hands free nature in that once a sequence is being played it does …
