An Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Using Multi-Radio In Wlan Mesh Networks, Chenzhe Zhang, Karol Kowalik, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Next-generation wireless mobile communications will be driven by converged networks that integrate disparate technologies and services. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are expected to be one of the next generation of wireless interconnection technologies, providing flexible high bandwidth wireless backhaul over large geographical areas. While single radio mesh nodes operating on a single channel suffer from capacity constraints, equipping mesh routers with multiple radios using multiple non-overlapping channels can significantly alleviate the capacity problem and increase the aggregate bandwidth available to the network. However, it is well known that multi-radio Mesh platforms face many limitations such as interference, radiation leakage, crosstalk …

Directional Dual-Band Slot Antenna With Dual-Bandgap High-Impedance-Surface Reflector, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann

Articles

A compact dual-band high-impedance-surface EBG structure is employed as a reflector for a dual-band annular-slot antenna. The reflector comprises an array of miniaturized EBG cells which utilizes square patches augmented by four S-shaped corrugated arms to reduce the resonant frequency of the proposed EBG structure. In order to broaden the bandwidth and adjust the frequency ratio for the dual-band EBG structure, a log-periodic spacing between the S-shaped strips is introduced. The combination of microstrip-fed annular slot and EBG reflector provides directional properties for both frequency bands with reduced size and low-profile.

Learning Without Default: A Study Of One-Class Classification And The Low-Default Portfolio Problem, Kenneth Kennedy, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

This paper asks at what level of class imbalance one-class classifiers outperform two-class classifiers in credit scoring problems in which class imbalance, referred to as the low-default portfolio problem, is a serious issue. The question is answered by comparing the performance of a variety of one-class and two-class classifiers on a selection of credit scoring datasets as the class imbalance is manipulated. We also include random oversampling as this is one of the most common approaches to addressing class imbalance. This study analyses the suitability and performance of recognised two-class classifiers and one-class classifiers. Based on our study we conclude …

Moisture Movement In Concrete During Drying, Niall Holmes Aug 2009

Moisture Movement In Concrete During Drying, Niall Holmes

Other resources

The prediction of moisture distribution within concrete slabs has considerable practical importance as it affects the time at which coverings can be safely applied. Moisture in concrete affects creep, shrinkage, strength development, durability and must be present in sufficient quantities for full hydration to occur and for workability on site. However, an excess of moisture in concrete at the point of covering particularly can lead to a number of problems such as delamination and blistering of vinyl, buckling of timber floors and rising of tiles. Moisture migrates in concrete slabs as a diffusion-type process during drying and is lost to …

The Tromped, A Means Of Prophylaxis For Flight Related Deep Vein Thrombosis, Carolyn Collins Aug 2009

The Tromped, A Means Of Prophylaxis For Flight Related Deep Vein Thrombosis, Carolyn Collins

Doctoral

The process of blood flow in the leg, against gravity and towards the heart is instigated by compression of the veins in the foot. Contraction of the calf muscles results in an ejection volume (EV) of blood towards the heart, completing the process. Research studies have shown an association between flight travel and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Stasis of blood flow can lead to the development of thrombus formation. Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs in situations where people are immobile for long periods of time, whether this is a result of ill health or travel on land or in the air. …

A Reference Model For Ground Coupled Heat Transfer, Michael Crowley Jul 2009

A Reference Model For Ground Coupled Heat Transfer, Michael Crowley

Conference papers

A recently completed extension to IEA BESTEST includes further work on tests suitable for the validation of ground coupled heat transfer modules within building energy simulation software. The model described here forms part of this work. A finite difference model was prepared and applied to ground coupled heat transfer in the environs of a building for a range of geometries and boundary conditions. The model was verified by demonstrating close agreement with an analytical solution and with two independent models; it is therefore fit for purpose. A fundamental modelling limitation, applying to ground coupled heat transfer, emerged from the work.

Knowledge Transfer Within A Software Development Team, Geraldine Conway Jul 2009

Knowledge Transfer Within A Software Development Team, Geraldine Conway

Dissertations

Knowledge in a software company is the blood of the company, not surviving without

the valuable knowledge running through its veins. Knowledge is no longer seen as an

object of competitive advantage but is the core of how an organisation operates.

The transfer of tacit knowledge into a format that is usable and can be transmitted to

other individuals is a challenge in any organisation due to the nature of this

knowledge. Tacit knowledge is a challenge to convert into an explicit form as it is hard

to contextualise this knowledge in order for it to be reusable for others. …

Radial Ebg Cell Layout For Gps Patch Antennas, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Xiulong Bao Jun 2009

Radial Ebg Cell Layout For Gps Patch Antennas, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Xiulong Bao

Articles

A novel radial layout for mushroom-like electromagnetic-bandgap (EBG) cells surrounding a printed circularly-polarised patch antenna is proposed. Two radial EBG configurations surrounding a circular patch are compared to a reference patch on a conventional ground plane of the same dimension. The radial shape and displacement of the EBG cells around the patch offers improvements in terms of gain and axial-ratio compared to the reference antenna and is more suitable for circular geometries compared to conventional Cartesian layouts. In particular, the distance between the patch and the surrounding EBG cells is independent of the cell period, which can be arbitrarily chosen, …
