A Remote Interrogation System For Monitoring Concrete Performance Exposed To Environmental Action, Niall Holmes
A Remote Interrogation System For Monitoring Concrete Performance Exposed To Environmental Action, Niall Holmes
Other resources
The performance of the surface zone of concrete is acknowledged as a major factor governing
the rate of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures as it provides the only barrier to the
ingress of water containing dissolved ionic species such as chlorides which, ultimately,
initiate corrosion of the reinforcement. In-situ monitoring of cover-zone concrete is critical in
attempting to make realistic predictions as to the in-service performance of the structure. To
this end, this paper presents developments in a remote interrogation system to allow
continuous, real-time monitoring of the cover-zone concrete from an office setting. Use is
made of a multi-electrode …

Active Learning For Text Classification, Rong Hu
Active Learning For Text Classification, Rong Hu
Doctoral
Text classification approaches are used extensively to solve real-world challenges. The success or failure of text classification systems hangs on the datasets used to train them, without a good dataset it is impossible to build a quality system. This thesis examines the applicability of active learning in text classification for the rapid and economical creation of labelled training data. Four main contributions are made in this thesis. First, we present two novel selection strategies to choose the most informative examples for manually labelling. One is an approach using an advanced aggregated confidence measurement instead of the direct output of classifiers …
Rational Efficiency Of A Heat Exchanger, Jim Mcgovern, Brian P. Smyth
Rational Efficiency Of A Heat Exchanger, Jim Mcgovern, Brian P. Smyth
Articles
The authors propose a new and unique definition for the rational efficiency of a heat exchanger. This new rational efficiency is defined in terms of its sub-rational efficiencies: a heat transfer rational efficiency and a friction rational efficiency for each of the fluid systems comprising the heat exchanger. The heat transfer rational efficiency is based on the definition of a mean temperature for the heat source and a mean temperature for the heat sink and reflects the exergy supplied and the exergy received, due to heat transfer only. The friction rational efficiency for each fluid system of the heat exchanger …
Inverted Pendulum Swing Up Controller, David Kennedy, James Conlon
Inverted Pendulum Swing Up Controller, David Kennedy, James Conlon
Conference Papers
The inverted pendulum is a classic control problem. The system is open – loop unstable and continuously wants to reach equilibrium by falling over. The system must be stabilised by means of feedback. The developed inverted pendulum system is shown in Figure 1.
In order to balance the pendulum in the inverted position the pivot must be moved continuously to correct the falling pendulum. This is similar to trying to vertically balance a broom on your hand. This interesting control problem is fundamentally the same as those involved in rocket or missile propulsion. The rocket has to balance on its …
Investigating Polymer-Tool Steel Interfaces To Predict The Work Of Adhesion For Demoulding Force Optimisation, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, Giuliano Bissacco
Investigating Polymer-Tool Steel Interfaces To Predict The Work Of Adhesion For Demoulding Force Optimisation, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, Giuliano Bissacco
Conference Papers
Demoulding parts from replication tools is a critical stage of replication processes such as injection moulding and hot embossing. This challenge increases as part size decreases since components and associated replication cores become more fragile and liable to damage. Understanding interfacial characteristics between a polymer and the tool surface is critical to optimise the demoulding of such parts from replication tools. The strength of the polymer-tool interaction is characterised by the adhesion energy and is specific for a particular polymer-tool pair. It’s magnitude depends upon the tool material, the chemical structure of the polymer, the processing conditions and the surface …

Anticipating context changes using a model-based approach requires a formal procedure for analysing and modelling context-dependent functionality and stable description of the architecture which supports dynamic decision-making and architecture evolution. This article demonstrates the capabilities of the context-oriented component-based application-model-driven architecture (COCA-MDA) to support the development of self- adaptive applications; the authors describe a state-of-the-art case study and evaluate the development effort involved in adopting the COCA-MDA in constructing the application. An intensive analysis of the applica- tion requirements simplified the process of modelling the application’s behavioural model; therefore, instead of modelling several variation models, the developers modelled an extra-functionality …
Soft Tissue Cutting With Ultrasonic Mechanical Waveguides, Mark Wylie, Garrett Mcguinness, Graham Gavin
Soft Tissue Cutting With Ultrasonic Mechanical Waveguides, Mark Wylie, Garrett Mcguinness, Graham Gavin
Conference Papers
The use of ultrasonic vibrations transmitted via small diameter wire waveguides represents a technology that has potential for minimally invasive procedures in surgery. This form of energy delivery results in distal tip mechanical vibrations with amplitudes of vibration of up to 50 μm and at frequencies between 20-50 kHz commonly reported. This energy can then be used by micro-cutting surgical tools and end effectors for a range of applications such as bone cutting, cement removal in joint revision surgery and soft tissue cutting. One particular application which has gained regulatory approval in recent years is in the area of cardiovascular …
Analysis Of Converter Connected Synchronous Wind Turbines To Grid Disturbances., Joseph Kearney, Michael Conlon, Eugene Coyle
Analysis Of Converter Connected Synchronous Wind Turbines To Grid Disturbances., Joseph Kearney, Michael Conlon, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
This paper investigates the performance of synchronous generators to grid voltage unbalance and grid faults. A Model of a synchronous generator with a full converter is implemented in the SimPowerSystems toolbox in Matlab/Simulink. Methods to modify the converter control schemes to improve the synchronous generator systems response to grid voltage unbalance and grid faults are investigated. Grid faults including grid voltage unbalance, and line-to-ground faults are introduced into the model at specific times to analyse the performance of the wind generation system. Improvements in the performance of the synchronous generator WECS to the grid disturbances are illustrated.

ABSTRACT The increase in popularity of physical activities from fun runs to competitive marathons has lead to a huge industry in sports footwear, which is now worth $20bn annually. There is a resultant increase in injuries, largely due to the repeated and prolonged nature of the impact forces experienced by the leg. Clinical data indicates that the knee is the most common site of running related injury, followed by the lower leg and foot. The complexity of the ankle structure means that injuries are acute and the success rates of replacements are very low. Therefore research in this area is …

A Novel High Sensitive Optical Fiber Microphone Based On A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Structure, An Sun, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell
Articles
In this paper, a novel multimode interference based optical fiber microphone by employing singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) structure is presented. The acoustic vibration is measured by detecting the transmission loss of the SMS structure that attached to a thick aluminum membrane. Experiments are carried on to test the performance of SMS structured fiber microphone and the experimental results show that the SMS fiber sensor can effectively detect the acoustic signal within the audio range of 20 KHz. It also exhibits a high sensitivity and human voice can also be picked up effectively within the distance of 2 m.

The Effects Of Interface Protection Requirements On The Stability Of Embedded Generation Connected To The Irish Distribution System, Damien Glennon
The Effects Of Interface Protection Requirements On The Stability Of Embedded Generation Connected To The Irish Distribution System, Damien Glennon
Msc. in Energy Management
The electricity sector in Ireland has undergone a number of changes in the last 20 years. In the early 90’s the fuel mix was predominantly fossil fuel based with a very small percentage of renewables on the system. The electricity generation portfolio was dominated by coal/gas/peat fired power stations which used large synchronous machines to generate electricity. These synchronous machines provided the necessary system inertia and kept the system frequency stable. However, rising fuel costs, dwindling fossil fuel supplies, climate change etc. has driven the growth of renewable energy especially in the electricity sector. Current targets for renewable energy in …

Wheelchair seating systems are specialised for a number of reasons as users can have impaired mobility, which increases the possibility of pressure build up. These areas of high pressure frequently occur in the trunk region under the bony prominences known as the Ischial Tuberosities (IT), pressure ulcers may occur consequently. Polyurethane foam has been in use for some time in wheelchair seating systems as it exhibits good pressure relieving capabilities in most cases. However, little quantitative research has gone into foamed polymers, in comparison with conventional elastomeric materials. This lack of knowledge can ultimately lead to more time being spent …
Formative Assessment Practices In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes And The Enhancement Of The Student Learning Experience, Lloyd Scott, Chrisopher Fortune
Formative Assessment Practices In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes And The Enhancement Of The Student Learning Experience, Lloyd Scott, Chrisopher Fortune
Conference papers
It is widely accepted across Higher Education (HE) that assessment has a strong link with learning and a key factor in this link is formative assessment. Formative assessment is generally defined as an activity taking place during a programme or unit of learning with the express purpose of improving and enhancing student learning. However, there is still considerable disagreement over the roles of lecturers and students in this process. It is therefore very important to understand how lecturers in built environment (BE) undergraduate education perceive their own roles and the role of their students in using assessment strategy to deliver …

Novel Approaches To The Analysis Of Localised Stress Concentrations In Deformed Elastomers, John Mcnamara
Novel Approaches To The Analysis Of Localised Stress Concentrations In Deformed Elastomers, John Mcnamara
Doctoral
The research described here is concerned with improving finite element analysis (FEA) of rubber components subjected to dynamic loading, particularly in respect of accurate modelling of stress softening using standard software codes and phenomenological material models. The research required the design and implementation of a user subroutine capable of inclusion in standard highly nonlinear codes. Experimental methods were employed to corroborate the FEA simulations and so validate the subroutine. This was also achieved using 3D image correlation photogrammetry (ICP) and other novel experimental procedures. From this experimentation and modelling, the results for different rubber specimens and load cases were presented. …

Articles
This article focuses on describing a Model Driven Archi- tecture (COCA-MDA) approach that facilitates the develop- ment of self-adaptive application for indoor wayfinding for individuals with cognitive impairments. COCA-MDA pro- vides the following benefits: 1) It enables the architecture to anticipate several behavioural variations based on the context and the specific needs of the individuals with cog- nitive impairments. 2) It enables the application to proac- tively anticipate or reactively address unforeseen changes through support by a dynamic-decision making and policy framework. The policy framework is based on a stable de- scription of software models and proprieties. 3) It can …

Rail Freight In The Republic Of Ireland, Juan Carlos Carrasco Gimenez, Edward Sweeney, John Harvey
Conference papers
In a world where freight transport is increasing, efficiency is essential. Transport by rail is characterised by its low fuel consumption per tonne. This mode of transport became extremely important during the last century but unfortunately it has been losing its importance in the logistics sector with the passing of time. However, we are currently witnessing an important transformation in the railway sector throughout Europe. This has been promoted by the European Union, with a significant allocation of resources to this issue. With the objective of increasing the volume of goods transported by rail, European nations are conducting a transformation …

A statistically significant weakly positive correlation between lecture attendance and examination performance was established. Each 10% increase in student attendance at lectures improved both Module 1 examination …
A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley
A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley
Articles
This paper compares a 3-dimensional hydro-ecological model with a 2-dimensional model simulating the distribution and fate of Escherichia Coli (E.Coli) discharges from a sewage treatment plant discharging into Dublin Bay, Ireland. Before being discharged, the effluent from the sewage treatment plant is mixed with cooling water from a thermal generation plant resulting in a warm buoyant sewage plume that can be 7 − 9oC higher than the ambient water in the Bay. The mixing of the stratified plume is complicated by the tidal currents which transport the plume into and out of the estuary. These processes have a direct impact …

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Articles
A wideband dual-frequency dual-polarized printed antenna is proposed for LTE, WLAN, and UWB systems. The dual-band antenna provides wide impedance bandwidths of 74% with respect to the center frequency of 2.725 GHz, and 39% with respect to the center frequency of 7.15 GHz. An open slot in the ground plane between the feed arms provides an orthogonal path to realize an embedded circularly polarized band at 2.35 GHz with an axial-ratio bandwidth of 16%. Dual-band characteristics are achieved by an asymmetrical dipole-like element and the coupling configuration between the T-shaped feed line and the wide ground-plane slot.
Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Articles
A dual-band antenna with right-hand circular polarization for the first frequency and the counter polarization at the second frequency is realized with compact printed spiral slots. The coupled spiral slots are fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. Dual-sense circularly-polarized performance is achieved by realizing oppositely-directed current rotation for the two frequency bands. A parametric study shows that the additional slot significantly improves the bandwidth for both frequency bands. Measured results show that the fractional impedance bandwidth is greater than 18% for both bands. The 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidths are 4.5% and 3.5% for the RHCP and LHCP bands, respectively.
