On-Site And External Energy Harvesting In Underground Wireless, Usman Raza, Abdul Salam Apr 2020

On-Site And External Energy Harvesting In Underground Wireless, Usman Raza, Abdul Salam

Faculty Publications

Energy efficiency is vital for uninterrupted long-term operation of wireless underground communication nodes in the field of decision agriculture. In this paper, energy harvesting and wireless power transfer techniques are discussed with applications in underground wireless communications (UWC). Various external wireless power transfer techniques are explored. Moreover, key energy harvesting technologies are presented that utilize available energy sources in the field such as vibration, solar, and wind. In this regard, the Electromagnetic(EM)- and Magnetic Induction(MI)-based approaches are explained. Furthermore, the vibration-based energy harvesting models are reviewed as well. These energy harvesting approaches lead to design of an efficient wireless underground …

Establishing A Content Taxonomy For The Coherent Study Of Engineering In P-12 Schools, Greg Strimel, Tanner Huffman, Michael Grubbs, Eunhye Kim, Jamie Gurganus Apr 2020

Establishing A Content Taxonomy For The Coherent Study Of Engineering In P-12 Schools, Greg Strimel, Tanner Huffman, Michael Grubbs, Eunhye Kim, Jamie Gurganus

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Engineering education has increasingly become an area of interest at the P-12 level, yet attempts to align engineering knowledge, skills, and habits to existing elementary and secondary educational programming have been parochial in nature (e.g., for a specific context, grade, or initiative). Consequently, a need exists to establish a coherent P-12 content framework for engineering teaching and learning, which would serve as both an epistemological foundation for the subject and a guide for the design of developmentally appropriate educational standards, performance expectations, learning progressions, and assessments. A comprehensive framework for P-12 engineering education would include a compelling rationale and vision …

Does The Use Of Simulation Significantly Impact Students’ Perceptions Of Their Air Traffic Control Knowledge And Skill?, Meron Lindenfeld, Jeanne Radigan, Michael Figuccio Apr 2020

Does The Use Of Simulation Significantly Impact Students’ Perceptions Of Their Air Traffic Control Knowledge And Skill?, Meron Lindenfeld, Jeanne Radigan, Michael Figuccio

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Simulation has served as an instructional supplement in education and training within various fields such as nursing, business, and flight training. Prior research studies have documented its usefulness. Simulation-based lessons have also been used for air traffic control (ATC) training, but little research has been conducted on the usefulness of simulation in this application. This study measured the level of influence that ATC simulation had on students’ perception of their ATC knowledge and skill level and their commitment to a career in ATC.

Data were collected by surveying students at four institutions of higher education after they completed ATC courses …

Capturing Children With Autism’S Engagement In Engineering Practices: A Focus On Problem Scoping, Hoda Ehsan, Monica E. Cardella Apr 2020

Capturing Children With Autism’S Engagement In Engineering Practices: A Focus On Problem Scoping, Hoda Ehsan, Monica E. Cardella

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

In the last two decades, pre-college engineering education has increased, with research on pre-college engineering education emerging as a nascent field. However, limited research, if any, has considered aspects of engineering thinking of children with neurodiversity. In line with calls for broadening participation in engineering education, consideration of neurodiverse children is critical. Among various neurodiverse conditions, the number of children with autism is rapidly growing. In addition, studies have shown that individuals with autism have the potential to perform well in activities that require systematizing abilities. Engineering is one such activity. Prior research has provided evidence of the importance of …

Pilot Source Study 2018: Five Years After The Foq Rule—New-Hire First Officer Backgrounds And Their Performance In Us Regional Airline Training, Guy M. Smith, Maryjo O. Smith, Troy E. Techau, Michelle P. Hight Apr 2020

Pilot Source Study 2018: Five Years After The Foq Rule—New-Hire First Officer Backgrounds And Their Performance In Us Regional Airline Training, Guy M. Smith, Maryjo O. Smith, Troy E. Techau, Michelle P. Hight

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

After the Pilot Source Study (PSS) 2015 was published, there was concern that the data were collected too soon after the First Officer Qualification Rule compliance date. The Collaborative Research Committee of the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) voted to undertake the PSS 2018 to determine whether the results of the PSS 2015 were still valid. In fall 2018, five research teams collected 9,776 pilot records from five regional airlines and analyzed these data. In the PSS 2018, the criteria for success were: ≥90% completions and ≤1 extra training event. In rank order, the following pilots were most successful in …

The Critical Role Of Humidity In Modeling Summer Electricity Demand Across The United States, Debora Maia-Silva, Rohini Kumar, Roshanak Nateghi Apr 2020

The Critical Role Of Humidity In Modeling Summer Electricity Demand Across The United States, Debora Maia-Silva, Rohini Kumar, Roshanak Nateghi

School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Cooling demand is projected to increase under climate change. However, most of the existing projections are based on rising air temperatures alone, ignoring that rising temperatures are associated with increased humidity; a lethal combination that could significantly increase morbidity and mortality rates during extreme heat events. We bridge this gap by identifying the key measures of heat stress, considering both air temperature and near-surface humidity, in characterizing the climate sensitivity of electricity demand at a national scale. Here we show that in many of the high energy consuming states, such as California and Texas, projections based on air temperature alone …

Peptide-Modified Chondroitin Sulfate Reduces Coefficient Of Friction At Articular Cartilage Surface, Celina Twitchell, Tanaya Walimbe, Julie C. Liu, Alyssa Panitch

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease that results in pain and joint stiffness. Currently, steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and supplements aimed at restoring lubrication to the affected joint are the most successful with respect to improving patient comfort. Due to the success in lubricating therapies, there exists a keen interest to develop better therapies that mimic how lubrication occurs naturally in the joint. Here we describe the results obtained using a chondroitin sulfate chain to which is conjugated peptides that bind to either hyaluronic acid (found in high concentrations in the synovial fluid) or collagen type II (present on the …

Design And Construction Of Drilled Shafts For Landslides, Malek Smadi Mar 2020

Design And Construction Of Drilled Shafts For Landslides, Malek Smadi

Purdue Road School

In general, weathered shale underlain by shale interbedded with limestone is the main forma-tion that underlies many of the slopes adjacent to the Ohio River in southern Indiana. During wet periods the weathered shale exhibits a sig-nificant decrease in strength, which has led to a number of landslides. In this session several case histories will be presented where drilled shafts have been used to repair and improve the safety of homes and roadways.

Indot Maintenance - Next Level, Michael E. Brinkerhoff Mar 2020

Indot Maintenance - Next Level, Michael E. Brinkerhoff

Purdue Road School

INDOT, similar to many municipalities, has developed structured methods to not only inspect assets, but to identify deficiencies in an extremely efficient manner. This has led to multiple metrics for tracking customer service resolutions, bridge and large culvert hit rates, and other similar type performance standards. While technology for data collection and analysis are heavily weighed to meet agency goals, the need for out of the box solutions has grown immensely. Going beyond the metrics, many field personnel are tasked with keeping INDOT assets functioning for the safety and mobility of the public. This has pushed INDOT to the NEXT …
