Extraction Of Contaminated Soil Using High Pressure Jet Grouting, Purdue Ect Team Jan 2007

Extraction Of Contaminated Soil Using High Pressure Jet Grouting, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

Removal of contaminated soil underneath existing structures causes settlement. There is a need for a remediation technology that eliminates this problem. The jet grouting by the triple rod system can be combined with an on site remediation technology (e.g., soil washing). Jet grouting was developed primarily for underpinning and/or excavation support. The benefits of this technology lie in the future reduction of structural settlement, and site access flexibility.

Ballistic Graphene Nanoribbon Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors: A Full Real-Space Quantum Transport Simulation, Gengchiau Liang, Neophytos Neophytou, Mark S. Lundstrom, Dmitri Nikonov

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A real-space quantum transport simulator for graphenenanoribbon (GNR) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) has been developed and used to examine the ballistic performance of GNR MOSFETs. This study focuses on the impact of quantum effects on these devices and on the effect of different type of contacts. We found that two-dimensional (2D) semi-infinite graphene contacts produce metal-induced-gap states (MIGS) in the GNR channel. These states enhance quantum tunneling, particularly in short channel devices, they cause Fermi level pinning and degrade the device performance in both the ON-state and OFF-state. Devices with infinitely long contacts having the same width as the channel …

Performance Modeling Of An Rf Coaxial Plasma Thruster, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud, Evgeniy Bondar

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

The RF plasma thruster has considerable potential to ease the impact of severe constraints on power, mass, volume and lifetime of microsatellite propulsion systems. This concept is classified as an electrothermal propulsion system and exploits RF capacitively coupled discharge (RFCCD) for heating of a propellant. The plasma is characterized as a low-power discharge possessing a low-current density with high uniformity and propagating through low-pressure gas. To assess computationally the thruster’s propulsive capabilities as a function of mass flow rate, electrode separation, RF frequency and power input, a numerical model comprises particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo (PIC/MCC) and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithms. …

Numerical Simulations Of Supersonic Flow In A Linear Aerospike Micronozzle, A Zilic, D L. Hitt, Alina A. Alexeenko

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

In this study, we numerically examine thrust performance of the linear aerospike nozzle micro-thruster for various nozzle spike lengths and flow parameters in order to identify optimal geometry(s) and operating conditions. Decomposed hydrogen-peroxide is used as the monopropellant in the studies. Performance is characterized for different flow rates (Reynolds numbers) and aerospike lengths, and the impact of micro-scale viscous forces is assessed. It is found that 2-D full micro-aerospike efficiencies can exceed axisymmetric micro-nozzle efficiencies by as much as 10%; however, severe penalties are found to occur for truncated spikes at low Reynolds numbers.

Effective And Robust Coordination Of Traffic Signals On Arterial Streets, Volume 1, Research Report, Wei Li, Andrew P. Tarko

JTRP Technical Reports

Many transportation agencies use Synchro and SimTraffic software package to optimize signal coordination. In general, this software package effectively reduces the efforts of traffic systems engineers and improves the quality of the designed coordination. Nevertheless, the initial solutions given by the software packages usually require adjustment, at both the design and implementation stages. The major objective of this research, therefore, is to reduce the time and effort needed in solution tuning and thus to improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of using Synchro/SimTraffic in arterial signal coordination design. The research outcome is expected to help traffic systems engineers reach reasonable …

A Prescriptive Analysis Of The Indiana Coal Transportation Infrastructure, Thomas F. Brady, Chad M. Pfitzer

JTRP Technical Reports

This report presents the findings of a scoping study of Indiana’s coal transportation infrastructure. Throughout the literature search and investigative phases of this project, it was clear that there exists growing awareness of the importance that transportation plays in the domestic coal industry. There is evidence that suggests transportation costs may be higher than the cost of mining coal. Numerous studies suggest that coal transportation can be developed and utilized for significant competitive economic advantage. The Powder River Basin area in Wyoming is a stellar example of how the combination of a large natural resource and careful transportation planning can …

A Study Of Effective Soil Compaction Control Of Granular Soils, Vincent P. Drnevich, Aaron C. Evans, Adam Buser Prochaska Jan 2007

A Study Of Effective Soil Compaction Control Of Granular Soils, Vincent P. Drnevich, Aaron C. Evans, Adam Buser Prochaska

JTRP Technical Reports

Although it is known that impact compaction tests are not appropriate for granular soils, these tests continue to be widely used. Excessive settlements frequently occur in granular soils where specified field compaction is based on Standard Proctor (ASTM D 698; AASHTO T 99) maximum dry unit weights. A laboratory test program evaluated alternative test methods for granular soil compaction control and showed that a Vibrating Hammer method (similar to British Standard BS 1377:1975, Test 14) has great promise for laboratory compaction of these soils. A One-Point Vibrating Hammer test on an oven-dry soil sample is able to provide the maximum …

Influence Of Speed Limits On Roadway Safety In Indiana, Nataliya V. Malyshkina, Fred L. Mannering, Samuel Labi

JTRP Technical Reports

The influence of speed limits on roadway safety is an extremely important social issue and is subject to an extensive debate in the State of Indiana and nationwide. With roughly 900 fatalities and sixty thousand injuries annually in Indiana, traffic accidents place an incredible social and economic burden on the state. Still, speed limits posted on highways and other roads are routinely exceeded as individual drivers try to balance safety and mobility (speed) as well as risks of penalties from enforcement efforts. This research explores the relationship between speed limits and roadway safety. Specifically, the research focuses on the influence …

In particular, effects of drainage conditions around the cone tip were studied. Rate effects related to both drainage and shear strength dependence on loading rate were studied. In order to investigate the effects of drainage during penetration, penetration tests were performed with various velocities in the field and in a calibration chamber, and the obtained data were analyzed. For the field tests, two sites which have homogeneous clayey soil …

Investigation Of Device Parameters For Field-Effect Dna-Sensors By Three-Dimensional Simulation, Eddie Howell, Clemens Heitzinger, Gerhard Klimeck Oct 2006

Investigation Of Device Parameters For Field-Effect Dna-Sensors By Three-Dimensional Simulation, Eddie Howell, Clemens Heitzinger, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The development of a DNA field-effect transistor (DNAFET) simulator is described and implications on device structure and future experiments are discussed. In DNAFETs the gate structure is replaced by a layer of immobilized single-stranded DNA molecules which act as surface probe molecules [1, 2]. When complementary DNA strands bind to the receptors, the charge distribution near the surface of the device changes, modulating current transport through the device and enabling detection (cf. Fig. 1 and 5). Arrays of DNAFETs can be used for detecting singlenucleotide polymorphisms and for DNA sequencing. The advantage of DNAFETs over optical methods of detection is …

A Novel Open Field Activity Detector To Determine Spatial And Temporal Movement Of Laboratory Animals After Injury And Disease, Andrew O. Koob, John Cirillo, Charles F. Babbs Oct 2006

A Novel Open Field Activity Detector To Determine Spatial And Temporal Movement Of Laboratory Animals After Injury And Disease, Andrew O. Koob, John Cirillo, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Among the wide range of tests for laboratory animal behavior after neurological injury or disease, each has its benefits and drawbacks. The varied behavior that an animal exhibits makes it difficult to decide which test to use. However, a fundamental instinct for the laboratory animal is to explore when placed in a new environment. A way to test exploratory behavior is in the open field. Here, we introduce a simple activity box without the use of video equipment to determine the exploratory movement of a rat after traumatic brain injury. The activity box is an open field, and the rat …

Sign Retroreflectivity: Fiscal Impact Of Proposed Minimum Retroreflectivity Values On Local Governments In Indiana And Investigation Of Accuracy Of Nighttime Inspections, Indiana Ltap

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

To remain effective, traffic signs need to be clearly legible to all motorists. Their retroreflectivity is an important factor in their legibility. Recently, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has proposed a set of minimum retroreflectivity values to which all signs shall conform. The purpose of this study was two fold; to investigate the fiscal impact of these proposed minimums on roadways managed by counties, cities, and towns within in the State of Indiana and compare the accuracy of a simple nighttime inspection method to the more labor intensive measured retroreflectivity method.

Estimates performed on the collected data suggest that the …

Ballisticity Of Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors: Role Of Phonon Energy And Gate Bias, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Sayed Hasan, Mark S. Lundstrom, M. P. Anantram, Dmitri E. Nikonov Jul 2006

Ballisticity Of Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors: Role Of Phonon Energy And Gate Bias, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Sayed Hasan, Mark S. Lundstrom, M. P. Anantram, Dmitri E. Nikonov

Other Nanotechnology Publications

We investigate the role of electron-phonon scattering and gate bias in degrading the drive current of nanotube field-effect transistors (FETs). Optical phonon scattering significantly decreases the drive current only when gate voltage is higher than a well-defined threshold. For comparable electron-phonon coupling, a lower phonon energy leads to a larger degradation of drive current. Thus in semiconductor nanowire FETs, the drive current will be more sensitive than in carbon nanotube FETs because of the smaller phonon energies in semiconductors. Acoustic phonons and other elastic scattering mechanisms are most detrimental to nanotube FETs irrespective of biasing conditions.

Evaluation Of Wildlife Reflectors In Reducing Vehicle-Deer Collisions On Indiana Interstate 80/90, Sedat Gulen, George P. Mccabe, Ira Rosenthal, Samuel E. Wolfe, Virgil L. Anderson Jul 2006

Evaluation Of Wildlife Reflectors In Reducing Vehicle-Deer Collisions On Indiana Interstate 80/90, Sedat Gulen, George P. Mccabe, Ira Rosenthal, Samuel E. Wolfe, Virgil L. Anderson

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation is committed to reducing vehicle-deer collision incidents on the Indiana Interstate I-80/90 as well as on the other roads. Very few of the studies to reduce vehicle-deer collisions incorporated any sound and complete statistical design. Some states (California, Colorado, Maine, Ontario-Canada, Washington State and Wyoming) have found that the use of wildlife reflectors did not reduce vehicle-deer collisions. However, some other states (British Columbia-Canada, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington State and Wisconsin) found that the use of wildlife reflectors did reduce vehicle-deer collisions.

The main objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the effectiveness of …

Thermally Developing Flow And Heat Transfer In Rectangular Microchannels Of Different Aspect Ratios, Poh-Seng Lee, S V. Garimella Feb 2006

Thermally Developing Flow And Heat Transfer In Rectangular Microchannels Of Different Aspect Ratios, Poh-Seng Lee, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Laminar convective heat transfer in the entrance region of microchannels of rectangular cross-section is investigated under circumferentially uniform wall temperature and axially uniform wall heat flux thermal boundary conditions. Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed for laminar thermally developing flow in microchannels of different aspect ratios. Based on the temperature and heat flux distributions obtained, both the local and average Nusselt numbers are presented graphically as a function of the dimensionless axial distance and channel aspect ratio. Generalized correlations, useful for the design and optimization of microchannel heat sinks and other microfluidic devices, are proposed for predicting Nusselt numbers. The proposed …

Meaningful Labeling Of Integrated Query Interfaces, Eduard Dragut, Clement Yu, Weiyi Meng

Cyber Center Publications

The contents of Web databases are accessed through queries formulated on complex user interfaces. In many domains of interest (e.g. Auto) users are interested in obtaining information from alternative sources. Thus, they have to access many individual Web databases via query interfaces. We aim to construct automatically a well-designed query interface that integrates a set of interfaces in the same domain. This will permit users to access information uniformly from multiple sources. Earlier research in this area includes matching attributes across multiple query interfaces in the same domain and grouping related attributes. In this paper, we investigate the naming of …
