Student Study Habits And Their Effectiveness In An Integrated Statics And Dynamics Class, Marisa Orr, Lisa Benson, Matthew Ohland, Sherrill Biggers

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Integrated Statics and Dynamics is a required five-credit course that was offered for Mechanical Engineering students at Clemson University for the first time in Fall 2006. The large-enrollment course was taught using innovative active learning techniques and new course materials. To aid in the development of the course, 211 students were asked to self-report their study habits in an 8 question survey. A cluster analysis was used to identify three study habit profiles. Knowing how students allocate their time and the effectiveness of their strategies can promote more effective guidance for students who are struggling to learn the material while …

Contributions To Foundation Engineering In Geotechnique, Rodrigo Salgado, G. T. Houlsby, D. N. Cathie Jun 2008

Contributions To Foundation Engineering In Geotechnique, Rodrigo Salgado, G. T. Houlsby, D. N. Cathie

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Many of the important developments in the field of foundation engineering have been addressed in Géotechnique papers over the past 60 years. This paper briefly reviews some of these developments and related articles, particularly with respect to shallow and deep foundations. In the early days of Géotechnique, the power to perform sophisticated numerical analyses did not exist. Papers tended to focus on the solution of problems using simple models in which soil was modelled either as linear elastic or as perfectly plastic. Engineers sought simple closed-form analytical solutions for boundary-value problems. With the development of more powerful analytical, computational …

Release Of Hydrophobic Molecules From Polymer Micelles Into Cell Membranes Revealed By Forster Resonance Energy Transfer Imaging, Hongtao Chen, Sungwon Kim, Shuyi Wang, Kinam Park, Ji-Xin Cheng May 2008

Release Of Hydrophobic Molecules From Polymer Micelles Into Cell Membranes Revealed By Forster Resonance Energy Transfer Imaging, Hongtao Chen, Sungwon Kim, Shuyi Wang, Kinam Park, Ji-Xin Cheng

Other Nanotechnology Publications

it is generally assumed that polymeric micelles, upon administration into the blood stream, carry drug molecules until they are taken up into cells followed by intracellular release. The current work revisits this conventional wisdom. The study using dual-labeled micelles containing fluorescently labeled copolymers and hydrophobic fluorescent probes entrapped in the polymeric micelle core showed that cellular uptake of hydrophobic probes was much faster than that of labeled copolymers. This result implies that the hydrophobic probes in the core are released from micelles in the extracellular space. Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging and spectroscopy were used to monitor this process …

Structures And Energetics Of Si Nanotubes From Molecular Dynamics And Density Functional Theory, Amritanshu Palaria, Gerhard Klimeck, Alejandro Strachan May 2008

Structures And Energetics Of Si Nanotubes From Molecular Dynamics And Density Functional Theory, Amritanshu Palaria, Gerhard Klimeck, Alejandro Strachan

Birck and NCN Publications

We use molecular dynamics (MD) with a first principles-based force field (ReaxFF) and density functional theory (DFT) to predict the atomic structure, energetics and elastic propoerties of Si nanotubes. We find various low-energy and low-symmetry hollow structures with external diameters of about 1 nm. These are the most stable structures in this small-diameter regime reported so far and exhibit properties very different from the bulk. While the cohesive energies of the four most stable nanotubes reported here are similar (from 0.638 to 0.697 eV above bulk Si), they have disparate Young's moduli (from 72 to 123 GPa).

Knowledge-Based System To Support Site Investigation For Safety Improvement, Andrew P. Tarko, Andrew Kwasniak, Jorge Ramos

JTRP Technical Reports

Specialists in transportation and other areas of engineering are trying to improve road safety. The most difficult part is determining the road features, driver behaviors, and vehicular failures that unduly increase the risk of crash. To help INDOT safety investigation teams, a previous research project developed a prototype Road Safety Investigation Tool (RSIT) for two-way stop-controlled intersections. The research summarized here has evaluated the prototype RSIT and has developed a new version RSIT2 that has incorporated the findings of the evaluation.

The evaluation of the RSIT prototype confirmed usefulness of the proposed methodology. The tool has been applied to two …

The Draft Genome Of The Transgenic Tropical Fruit Tree Papaya ( Carica Papaya Linnaeus), Ray Ming, Shaobin Hou, Yun Feng, Qinguyi Yu, Jyothi Thimmapuram

Cyber Center Publications

Papaya, a fruit crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, is known for its nutritional benefits and medicinal applications. Here we report a 3 draft genome sequence of 'SunUp' papaya, the first commercial virus-resistant transgenic fruit tree1 to be sequenced. The papaya genome is three times the size of the Arabidopsis genome, but contains fewer genes, including significantly fewer disease-resistance gene analogues. Comparison of the five sequenced genomes suggests a minimal angiosperm gene set of 13,311. A lack of recent genome duplication, atypical of other angiosperm genomes sequenced so far may account for the smaller papaya gene number in …

Gold Nanorod-Mediated Photothermolysis Induces Apoptosis To Macrophages Via Damage Of Mitochondria, Ling Tong, Ji-Xin Cheng Apr 2008

Gold Nanorod-Mediated Photothermolysis Induces Apoptosis To Macrophages Via Damage Of Mitochondria, Ling Tong, Ji-Xin Cheng

Birck Poster Sessions

Alterations in macrophage functions contribute to a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Diagnosis and eradication of activated macrophages is becoming a valid pharmaceutical target. In this work, gold nanorods conjugated with arginine-rich peptides were applied as theragonosis agents to detect activated macrophages via two-photon luminescence (TPL) and subsequent eradicate through optical hyperthermia. Functionalized gold nanorods could be selectively internalized by activated macrophages in live animals 0.5 h after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection. Apoptosis of macrophage was induced under proper irradiation conditions to reduce secondary inflammation, through mitochondria-dependent pathway.

Water-Soluble Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Nanomedicine, Christy L. Cooper, Lisa M. Reece, J Key, Donald E. Bergstrom, James F. Leary Apr 2008

Water-Soluble Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Nanomedicine, Christy L. Cooper, Lisa M. Reece, J Key, Donald E. Bergstrom, James F. Leary

Birck Poster Sessions

Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles (MION) are easily synthesized in organic solvents for industrial applications. However, biological applications require that the particles by readily dispersed in aqueous solutions. To improve their dispersion in aqueous solution, MION particles can be conjugated to water soluble polymers. These water soluble particles can then be used for nanomedicine, which utilizes nanometer scale constructs to treat diseases at the cellular level. Here we report the synthesis of a monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticle construct for breast cancer applications.

Outperforming The Conventional Scaling Rules In The Quantum-Capacitance Limit, Joachim Knoch, W Riess, Joerg Appenzeller Apr 2008

Outperforming The Conventional Scaling Rules In The Quantum-Capacitance Limit, Joachim Knoch, W Riess, Joerg Appenzeller

Other Nanotechnology Publications

We present a study on the scaling behavior of field-effect transistors in the quantum-capacitance limit (QCL). It will be shown that a significant performance improvement in terms of the power delay product can be obtained in devices scaled toward the QCL. As a result, nanowires or nanotubes exhibiting a 1-D transport are a premier choice as active channel materials for transistor devices since the QCL can be attained in such systems.

Limit States And Load And Resistance Design Of Slopes And Retaining Structures, Dongwook Kim, Rodrigo Salgado Apr 2008

Limit States And Load And Resistance Design Of Slopes And Retaining Structures, Dongwook Kim, Rodrigo Salgado

JTRP Technical Reports

Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods for slopes and MSE walls were developed based on probability theory. The complexity in developing LRFD for slopes and MSE walls results from the fact that (1) the representation of spatial variability of soil parameters of slopes using Gaussian random field is computationally demanding and (2) LRFD of MSE walls requires examination of multiple ultimate limit states for both external and internal stability checks.

For each design case, a rational framework is developed accounting for different levels of target probability of failure (or target reliability index) based on the importance of the structure. …

Analysis Of The Shaft Resistance Of Nondisplacement Piles In Sand, D Loukidis, Rodrigo Salgado Apr 2008

Analysis Of The Shaft Resistance Of Nondisplacement Piles In Sand, D Loukidis, Rodrigo Salgado

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The paper examines, using numerical modelling, the problem of the limit shaft resistance of non-displacement piles installed in sands. The modelling makes use of an advanced, two-surface-plasticity constitutive model. The constitutive model predicts the soil response in both the small- and the large-strain range, while taking into account the effects of the intermediate principal effective stress and of the inherent anisotropy of the sand. Finite element analyses of shearing along the pile shaft are performed in order to examine the development of limit unit shaft resistance and the changes in stress state around the shaft upon axial loading of the …

Six Dimensions Of Expertise: A More Comprehensive Definition Of Cognitive Expertise For Team Coordination, S K. Garrett, Barrett S. Caldwell, E C. Harris, M C. Gonzalez Mar 2008

Six Dimensions Of Expertise: A More Comprehensive Definition Of Cognitive Expertise For Team Coordination, S K. Garrett, Barrett S. Caldwell, E C. Harris, M C. Gonzalez

School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Looking at expertise from the vantage point of many knowledge domains allows the observations and resulting definitions to be useful across a broad range of subject areas. A stable set of definitions that work on a higher, more comprehensive level than the current literature offers is needed for an integrated description of expertise. A cohesive cross-domain definition and explanation of expertise can be used to optimise group interactions. Since group performance incorporates additional components of expertise that are not present in individual performance situations, these additional components must be examined in order to see a full picture of the successful …

Determination Of The Eigenstates And Wavefunctions Of A Single Gated As Donor, Gabriel P. Lansbergen, R. Rahman, C. J. Wellard, P. E. Rutten, J. Caro, I. Woo, N. Colleart, S. Biersemans, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Current semiconductor devices have been scaled to such dimensions that we need take atomistic approach to understand their operation for nano-electronics. From a bottomsup perspective, the smallest functional element within a nanodevice would be a single (dopant) atom itself. Control and understanding over the eigenenergies and wavefunctions of a single dopant could prove a key ingredient for device technology beyond-CMOS. Here, we will discuss the eigenlevels of a single As donor in a three terminal configuration. The donor is incorporated in the channel of prototype transistors called FinFETs. The measured eigenlevels are shown to consist of levels associated with the …

Nanopatterning Using Nsom Probes Integrated With High Transmission Nanoscale Bowtie Aperture, Nicholas Murphy-Dubay, Liang Wang, Edward C. Kinzel, Sreemanth Mv Uppuluri, Xianfan Xu Feb 2008

Nanopatterning Using Nsom Probes Integrated With High Transmission Nanoscale Bowtie Aperture, Nicholas Murphy-Dubay, Liang Wang, Edward C. Kinzel, Sreemanth Mv Uppuluri, Xianfan Xu

Birck and NCN Publications

Nanoscale ridge aperture antennas have been shown to have high transmission efficiency and confined nanoscale radiation in the near field region compared with regularly-shaped apertures. The radiation enhancement is attributed to the fundamental electric-magnetic field propagating in the TE10 mode concentrated in the gap between the ridges. This paper reports experimental demonstration of field enhancement using such ridge antenna apertures in a bowtie shape for the manufacture of nanometer size structures using an NSOM (near field scanning optical microscopy) probe integrated with nanoscale bowtie aperture. Consistent lines with width of 59 nm and as small as 24 nm have be …

Other Nanotechnology Publications

In this letter, we demonstrate a gate-all-around single-wall carbon nanotube field-effect transistor. This is the first successful experimental implementation of an off-chip gate and gate-dielectric assembly with subsequent deposition on a suitable substrate. The fabrication process and device measurements are discussed in the letter. We also argue in how far charges in the gate oxide are responsible for the observed nonideal device performance.

Carbon Nanotubes For High-Performance Electronics - Progress And Prospect, Joerg Appenzeller Feb 2008

Carbon Nanotubes For High-Performance Electronics - Progress And Prospect, Joerg Appenzeller

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Carbon nanotube devices offer intrinsic advantages for high-performance logic device applications. The ultrasmall body of a carbon nanotube-the tube diameter-is the key feature that should allow aggressive channel length scaling, while the intrinsic transport properties of the nanotube ensure at the same time high on-currents. in addition, the narrowness of the tube is critical to implementation of novel device concepts like the tunneling transistor. By understanding the unique capabilities of carbon nanotubes and using them in unconventional designs, novel nanoelectronic applications may become feasible. However, much better control of materials quality must be obtained, and new fabrication processes must be …

Influence Of Phonon Scattering On The Performance Of P-I-N Band-To-Band Tunneling Transistors, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Mark S. Lundstrom, Dmitri E. Nikonov Jan 2008

Influence Of Phonon Scattering On The Performance Of P-I-N Band-To-Band Tunneling Transistors, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Mark S. Lundstrom, Dmitri E. Nikonov

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Power dissipation has become a major obstacle in performance scaling of modern integrated circuits and has spurred the search for devices operating at lower voltage swing. In this letter, we study p-i-n band-to-band tunneling field effect transistors taking semiconducting carbon nanotubes as the channel material. The on current of these devices is mainly limited by the tunneling barrier properties, and phonon-scattering has only a moderate effect. We show, however, that the off current is limited by phonon absorption assisted tunneling, and thus is strongly temperature dependent. Subthreshold swings below the 60 mV/decade conventional limit can be readily achieved even at …

Alternatives To Fuel Tax: A State Level Perspective, Jungeun (Jen) Oh, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 2008

Alternatives To Fuel Tax: A State Level Perspective, Jungeun (Jen) Oh, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

Under the current fuel-tax-based highway financing system, the funding gap between highway needs and revenue available is expected to grow as vehicle fuel economy improves and use of alternative fuels increases. Consequently, the highway financing mechanism needs to be restructured or a different financing strategy undertaken. Previous research provided examples of successful implementation of pricing schemes in terms of design of pricing scheme, technology issues, legal and institutional issues, and public acceptability. Synthesizing this information, a methodological framework was established for evaluation of alternative user charging schemes. Based on the assessment of the current and projected highway revenue and the …

Post-Construction Evaluation Of Lime-Treated Soils, Chulmin Jung, Antonio Bobet Jan 2008

Post-Construction Evaluation Of Lime-Treated Soils, Chulmin Jung, Antonio Bobet

JTRP Technical Reports

Lime is used to treat weak subgrade soils during construction of highways. A small amount of lime (4 to 7%) is used to rapidly dehydrate and modify fine grained soils. The modification process improves workability and compactability of the soils. Although the lime modification process is primarily aimed at construction expediency, additional effects such as long-term improvement of stiffness and/or strength by pozzolanic and carbonation cementation reactions are expected. Lime treatment has been employed in Indiana over several decades, but the long-term performance of lime-treated soils has not been well quantified and no field tests have been done on roads …

High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Boltzmann Model Equations, Alina A. Alexeenko, Cyril Galitzine, Alexander M. Alekseenko Jan 2008

High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Boltzmann Model Equations, Alina A. Alexeenko, Cyril Galitzine, Alexander M. Alekseenko

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

High-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is applied to the kinetic model equations describing rarefied gas flows. A conservative DG discretization of nonlinear collision relaxation term is formulated for Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook and ellipsoidal statistical models. The numerical solutions using RKDG method of order up to four are obtained for two flow problems: the heat transfer between parallel plates and the normal shock wave. The convergence of RKDG method is compared with the conventional secondorder finite volume method for the heat transfer problem. The normal shock wave solutions obtained using RKDG are compared with the experimental measurements of density and velocity distribution …

Rfccd Microthruster Performance Via Numerical Simulation, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo (PIC/MCC) and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithms comprise a numerical model to assess the propulsive capability of a RF plasma microthruster concept. This thruster concept is an electrothermal device and exploits RF capacitively coupled discharge (RFCCD) to heat a propellant. This RF plasma microthruster has potential to alleviate some severe constraints on microsatellite propulsion systems such as power, mass, volume and lifetime. The discharge characteristics are investigated by permuting electrode geometry (0.5 - 10 mm) and applied voltage (10 - 500 V) at a constant RF frequency of 200 MHz and a pressure of 3 Torr. PIC/MCC …
