Effect Of Multivalent Ions On The Swelling And Mechanical Behavior Of Superabsorbent Polymers (Saps) For Mitigation Of Mortar Autogenous Shrinkage, Qian Zhu
Open Access Theses
The chemical and physical structure-property relationships of model superabsorbent polymer (SAP) hydrogels were characterized with respect to swelling behavior and mechanical properties in different ionic solutions (Na+ , Ca2+ , and Al3+ ). The model hydrogels were composed of poly(sodium acrylate-acrylamide) (PANa-PAM) copolymer with varying concentrations of PANa (0, 17, 33, 67, and 83 wt.%) and covalent crosslinking densities of 1, 1.5, and 2 wt.%. By synthesizing the hydrogels in-house, systems with independently tunable amounts of covalent crosslinking and anionic functional groups were created, allowing for the relative effects of covalent and ionic crosslinking on the properties of the hydrogels …
No And No2 Modeling For Diesel Oxidation Catalyst At Different Thermal Aging Levels, Keqin Zhou
No And No2 Modeling For Diesel Oxidation Catalyst At Different Thermal Aging Levels, Keqin Zhou
Open Access Theses
Different DOC modeling methods are analyzed and compared. Detailed reaction mechanisms of DOC reaction are discussed and a new NO and NO2 modeling technique is proposed. Experiments are conducted measuring downstream DOC NO and NOx . DOC out NO and NO2 concentrations are modeled as a function of DOC temperature. A robust model is built such that with the input of real time NOx and DOC temperature information, DOC-out NO and NO2 concentrations can be precisely predicted.
As is true with many catalysts, the DOC thermally ages as it operates, which reduces the thermal effectiveness level of the catalyst. This …
A Gpr-Gps-Gis-Integrated, Information-Rich And Error-Aware System For Detecting, Locating And Characterizing Underground Utilities, Shaui Li
Open Access Theses
Underground utilities have proliferated throughout the years. The location and dimension of many underground utilities have not always been properly collected and documented, leading to utility conflicts and utility strikes, and thus resulting in property damages, project delays, cost overruns, environment pollutions, injuries and deaths. The underlying reasons are twofold. First, the reliable data regarding the location and dimension of underground utility are missing or incomplete. Existing methods to collect data are not efficient and effective. Second, positional uncertainties are inherent in the measured utility locations. An effective means is not yet available to visualize and communicate the inherent positional …
Multi-Injector Modeling Of Transverse Combustion Instability Experiments, Kevin "James " Shipley
Multi-Injector Modeling Of Transverse Combustion Instability Experiments, Kevin "James " Shipley
Open Access Theses
Concurrent simulations and experiments are used to study combustion instabilities in a multiple injector element combustion chamber. The experiments employ a linear array of seven coaxial injector elements positioned atop a rectangular chamber. Different levels of instability are driven in the combustor by varying the operating and geometry parameters of the outer driving injector elements located near the chamber end-walls. The objectives of the study are to apply a reduced three-injector model to generate a computational test bed for the evaluation of injector response to transverse instability, to apply a full seven-injector model to investigate the inter-element coupling between injectors …

Integrated Dc-Dc Boost Converters Using Cmos Silicon On Sapphire Technology, Imaduddin Mohammad
Open Access Theses
With the recent advancements in semiconductor manufacturing towards smaller, faster and more efficient microelectronic systems, the problems of increasing leakage current and reduced breakdown voltage in bulk-CMOS transistors have become substantial in the sub-100-nanometer era. The Peregrine UltraCMOS Silicon-on-Sapphire (SOS) technology that uses highly-insulating sapphire substrate as insulator was introduced to meet the continually growing need for higher performance RF products. The electrically isolated circuit elements in the UltraCMOS technology lead to increased switching speeds and lower power consumption due to reduced junction and parasitic capacitances. Furthermore, the growing need for high-speed switching applications such as boosting a lower voltage …
Particle Deposition On Superhydrophobic Surfaces By Sessile Droplet Evaporation, Mercy G. Dicuangco
Particle Deposition On Superhydrophobic Surfaces By Sessile Droplet Evaporation, Mercy G. Dicuangco
Open Access Theses
Prediction and active control of the spatial distribution of particulate deposits obtained from sessile droplet evaporation is essential in ink-jet printing, nanostructure assembly, biotechnology, and other applications that require localized deposits. In recent years, sessile droplet evaporation on bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces has become an attractive method for depositing materials on a site-specific, localized region, but is less explored compared to evaporative deposition on hydrophilic surfaces. It is therefore of interest to understand particle deposition during droplet evaporation on superhydrophobic surfaces to enable accurate prediction and tunable control of localized deposits on such surfaces. The purpose of the present work is …
Characterizing The Intra-Warp Address Distribution And Bandwidth Demands Of Gpgpus, Calvin Holic
Characterizing The Intra-Warp Address Distribution And Bandwidth Demands Of Gpgpus, Calvin Holic
Open Access Theses
General-purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) are an important class of architectures that offer energy-efficient, high performance computation for data- parallel workloads. GPGPUs use single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) hardware as the core execution engines with (typically) 32 to 64 lanes of data width. Such SIMD operation is key to achieving high-performance; however, if memory demands of the different lanes in the "warp" cannot be satisfied, overall system performance can suffer.
There are two challenges in handling such heavy demand for memory bandwidth. First, the hardware necessary to coalesce multiple accesses to the same cache block--a key function necessary to reduce the demand …

Increasing The Supply Of Affordable Housing In Urban India - Mumbai, Upasna Viswanathan
Open Access Theses
The need for housing in today's world is irrefutable. The growing population, accompanied with the fast pace of urbanization, are producing great housing demand, in urban areas in particular. This study focused on one segment of housing - affordable housing, in Mumbai, India, the demand for which has been on a steady rise over the past decade. Though traditionally the State was the provider of affordable housing, private sector has been increasingly involved in the segment, beginning the economic meltdown of 2008-2009. Yet there is a huge demand-supply gap that exists, which needs to be filled. The researcher looks at …

Examining The Freezing And Thawing Behavior Of Concretes With Improved Performance Through Internal Curing And Other Methods, Wesley A. Jones
Open Access Theses
Internally cured (IC) concrete has been emerging over the last decade as an effective way to improve the performance of concrete. IC holds promise for producing concretes with an increased resistance to early-age cracking and ultimately enhancing the durability of structures. It is a simple and effective way to ensure proper hydration of cementitious material in high performance concrete mixtures; mixtures in which traditional, external, curing can be ineffective. IC supplies water that is necessary to relieve stress buildup from chemical shrinkage and in turn helping to prevent early age shrinkage cracking.^ The first part of this thesis presents and …

Study Of Aluminum Honeycomb Sandwich Composite Structure For Increased Specific Damping, Aditi S. Joshi
Open Access Theses
The aluminum honeycomb sandwich composite structure is commonly used in the aerospace and automotive applications where high strength to weight ratio is desirable. However the poor performance of the aluminum honeycomb sandwich composite structure in terms of the vibration damping and the sound transmission makes their applications limited. Studying the effect of different structural modifications on the damping has become an interesting area of research in past few decades. The present study addresses the effect of adding a mass on the composite beam at various locations on the damping loss factors for the modes of vibration present in the frequency …

Effect Of Image Capture Devices On The Accuracy Of Black-Box Printer Models, Jae Sung Youn
Open Access Theses
In the process of electrophotograpic (EP) printing, the deposition of toner to the printer-addressable pixel is greatly influenced by the neighboring pixels of the digital halftone. To account for these effects, printer models can either be embedded in the halftoning algorithm, or used to predict the printed halftone image at the input to an algorithm being used to assess print quality. Most recently, a series of six new models were developed to accurately account for local neighborhood effects and the influence of a 45 × 45 neighborhood of pixels on the central printer-addressable pixel. All these models are referred to …

The Purdue Neurotrauma Group (PNG) seeks to develop a biomechanical telemetry system capable of monitoring and storing athletes' head motions with the intention of identifying when a player may be at risk of neurophysiological damage, especially brain damage. A number of commercially-available systems exist with a similar goal; however, each of these systems discards information below an acceleration threshold. Research by PNG indicates that any acceleration may contribute to brain damage and that, because of this, an event-based model is insufficient for a proper understanding of an athlete's neurophysiological health. Continuous-time monitoring of head accelerations is therefore necessary. To facilitate …

Open Access Theses
As solar cell absorber materials, alloys of CuIn(S,Se)2 and Zn(S,Se) provide an opportunity to reduce the usage of indium along with the ability to tune the band gap. Here we report successful synthesis of alloyed (CuInS2 )0.5(ZnS)0.5 nanocrystals by a method that solely uses oleylamine as the liquid medium for synthesis. The reactive sintering of a thin film of these nanocrystals via selenization at 500 °C results in a uniform composition alloy (CuIn(S,Se)2 )0.5 (Zn(S,Se)) 0.5 layer with micron size grains. Due to the large amount of zinc in the film, the sintered grains exhibit the zinc blende structure instead …

Excessive Delays In Closeouts Can Be Removed With The Adaptation Of Better Practices, Vasudha Kaul
Open Access Theses
Until recent times, closeout was not given its due diligence simply because the damage it created was not appreciated. Literature, thought-provoking discussions and thoughtful deliberations have punctuated the absolute need for a project closeout planning at the very beginning of a project. Many experienced project managers fail to plan the closeout of a job and concentrate solely on completing the contractual scope of work without paying much heed to the final percent of construction projects, the one percent that is an extremely time-consuming and expensive process if not catered for well in advance. The closeout stage is given its due …

Unsteady Forces On A Spherical Particle Accelerating Or Decelerating In An Initially Stagnant Fluid, Yashas Mudlapur Phaneesh Keshav
Open Access Theses
Flows with particles play an important role in a number of engineering applications. These include trajectories of droplets in sprays in fuel-injected-reciprocating-piston and gas-turbine engines, erosion of materials due to particle impact on a surface, and deposition of materials on surfaces by impinging droplets or particles that could solidify or bond on impact. For these applications, it is important to understand the forces that act on the particles so that their trajectories could be predicted.
Considerable work has been done on understanding the forces acting on spherical particles, where the Reynolds numbers (Rep ) based on the particle …

Probabilistic Fault Detection And Diagnostics For Packaged Air-Conditioner Outdoor-Air Economizers, Andrew L. Hjortland
Open Access Theses
Poor economizer control, economizer damper failure, and excess outdoor-air contribute to these performance degradations. In order to promote optimal rooftop air-conditioner (RTU) performance and reduce operating costs, an automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD) tool has been designed for RTUs with integrated economizers. Based on previously proposed methods, the proposed method advances the economizer fault detection and diagnosis components by using statistical classifiers in order to provide more robust, probabilistic fault outputs. A set of air-side virtual sensors has also been added to the method in order to expand the applicable range of conditions fault detection and diagnostics can be …

Quantitative Imaging Of Radiation Intensity From A Turbulent Sooting Flame, Robert Kapaku
Open Access Theses
Quantitative imaging of radiation intensity (QIRI) is a method of investigating temporally and spatially resolved radiation from species and particulates in turbulent flames. The current study reports quantitative images of radiation intensity from a turbulent ethylene flame that matches the Reynolds number (15,200) of a non-sooting flame from the International Workshop on Measurement and Computation of Turbulent Non-premixed Flames. A calibrated high-speed infrared camera with four band-pass filters was used to acquire images of radiation intensity in wavelengths corresponding to carbon dioxide, water vapor, and soot. The luminous flame measurements show thin radiating structures corresponding to soot layers and higher …
Controlling Protein Release Using Biodegradable Microparticles, Benjamin Patrick Kline
Controlling Protein Release Using Biodegradable Microparticles, Benjamin Patrick Kline
Open Access Theses
Research in the field of protein therapeutics has exploded over the past decade and continues to grow in both academia and in industry. Protein drugs have advantages of being highly specific and highly active making them coveted targets for high profile disease states like cancer and multiple sclerosis. Unfortunately, their many advantages are complemented by their obstacles. Because proteins are highly active and highly specific, the window between efficacy and toxicity is very narrow and drug development can be long and arduous. In addition, protein activity is dependent on its specific folding conformation that is easily disrupted by a variety …

Investigating Surface Performance Trade-Offs Of Unimpeded Taxiways, Tiffany T. Le
Open Access Theses
Optimizing usage of unimpeded taxiways is a near-term operational change to mitigate emission impact on aviation and increase efficiency at airports. An unimpeded taxiway is a path for an aircraft to taxi around an active runway. Unimpeded taxiways provide benefits such as increased departure throughput, increased safety, reduced surface congestion, more efficient taxi-in procedures, and thereby also yield environmental benefits. The goals of this work are to investigate the use of current taxiways, examine surface performance and fuel burn trade-offs, and to develop a decision-support model based on potential fuel savings of unimpeded taxiways. This study analyzes unimpeded taxiway use …
Detecting Air Traffic Controller Interventions In Recorded Air Transportation System Data, Yul Kwon
Detecting Air Traffic Controller Interventions In Recorded Air Transportation System Data, Yul Kwon
Open Access Theses
In this study, I propose a systematic method of detecting aircraft deviation due to air traffic controller (ATC) intervention. The aircraft deviations associated with ATC interventions are detected using a heuristic algorithm developed from analyzing the actual positions of an aircraft to its filed flight plan when the aircraft trajectories were identified as having an encounter in a loss-of-separation incident. An actual (closed-loop) flight trajectory of the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZOB ARTCC) was collected from the FlightAware database. This was compared with the corresponding planned (open-loop) trajectory dataset generated by the Microsoft© Flight Simulator X (FSX). I …
An Algorithm For Impacting Soft Structures, Tengfei Long
An Algorithm For Impacting Soft Structures, Tengfei Long
Open Access Theses
Impact among soft structures is often difficult to model because of the geometrical non-linearity involved. There are a number of previous studies of the contact dynamics of rigid bodies, but few has focused on soft structures so far.
This thesis models impact between soft structures without any restraint on their geometries. The goal is to simulate the dynamics involved among soft structures during an impact process. This has been done through designing and implementing an contact algorithm that uses the finite element method along with a three-dimensional solid element to solve the fundamental time integration problem. Modeling of the contact …
Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Air Distribution In An Airliner Cabin, Wei Liu
Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Air Distribution In An Airliner Cabin, Wei Liu
Open Access Theses
Nowadays, more people, including those with impaired health or who are otherwise potentially sensitive to the cabin environment, are traveling by air than ever before. The flying public demands a higher comfort level and a cleaner environment because they encounter a combination of environmental factors including low humidity, low air pressure, and sometimes, exposure to air contaminants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, various organic chemicals, and biological agents. Moreover, international air travel has increased the potential risks associated with airborne disease transmission and the release, whether accidentally or intentionally, of noxious substances during flight. Many studies suggest that the risk …

Progressively stricter emission regulations have compelled diesel engine manufacturers to develop new technologies that reduce harmful pollutants like NOx and soot. While manufacturers have previously been able to meet these regulations through the use of on engine technology such as exhaust gas recirculation and multiple pulse injections, exhaust after treatment systems such as diesel particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction systems have become necessary to meet recent stricter policies. While these after treatment systems are incredibly effective at reducing harmful emissions, to operate effectively the system needs to be above a certain temperature level typically between 250 and 300°C. Many …
