Simulation, Control And Testing Of Advanced Hydraulic Hybrid Transmissions, Italo M. Ramos, Monika Ivantysynova, Michael Sprengel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Hydraulic hybrids transmissions have the potentially to substantially improve the fuel efficiency of on road vehicles. In fact recent studies have demonstrated that this technology can improve fuel economy by upwards of 30% over competing electric hybrids. To further improve the fuel economy and performance of this technology a novel blended hydraulic hybrid transmission has been constructed at the Maha Fluid Power Research Center. While this novel hybrid architecture created by the Maha lab has many benefits over conventional systems, there are a number of control challenges present due to several discrete modes of operation. And though improving fuel economy …

Changes In Vessel Properties During Early Progression Of Murine Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms From In Vivo Ultrasound, Luis R. Avila Murati, Evan H. Phillips, Craig J. Goergen
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are a common and frequently fatal disease characterized by the weakening and dilation of the aorta. The larger the aneurysm, the higher the chances are of rupturing and life-threatening hemorrhage. The aim of this study is to apply the angiotensin II (AngII) model of AAAs in male apolipoprotein-E-deficient mice (apoE-/- C57Bl/6J), in order to analyze, quantify, and understand the pathologies and characteristics associated with early AAA development. To date, many studies focusing on the evaluation of AAA characteristics have been performed ex vivo. Therefore, we focused on in vivo assessment, through the use of …

The Identification Of Optimal Pathways In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803 By Flux Balance Analysis, Ning Xuan Yip, John A. Morgan, Longyun Guo
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Cyanobacteria are microorganisms considered advantageous for producing valuable compounds because of their high growth rates compared to plants. They also can be grown at large scale in photobioreactors. This research aims to use metabolic engineering strategies to maximize the phenylalanine yield in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Our hypothesis is flux balance analysis will give different flux distributions with different objective functions. The scope of the project is modeling photoautotrophic metabolism of cyanobacteria with a genome scale stoichiometric model, testing several alternative objective functions. We also examined the tradeoff between growth and L-phenylalanine production with flux balance analysis. A linear programming …

The Effects Of Ivc Modulation On Modern Diesel Engines Equipped With Variable Valve Actuation At High Load And Speed, Troy E. Odstrcil, Gregory M. Shaver, Cody M. Allen
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Modern diesel compression engines are known for their increased durability, fuel economy and torque when compared with their spark ignition gasoline counterparts. These are some of the reasons why diesel engines are preferred in heavy duty applications such as trains and semi-trucks. During the Heavy Duty Federal Test Procedure transient drive cycle, or HDFTP, nearly 85% of the total fuel burned is at speeds greater than 2000 revolutions per minute (RPM) for the studied engine. Therefore, it is desirable to increase the fuel economy at these loads and speeds. It is hypothesized that the use of late intake valve close …

Development Of A Shape Memory Polymer Soft Microgripper, Marshall Tatro, David J. Cappelleri, Wuming Jing
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The ability to control microrobots by means of magnetic fields has become of increasing interest to researchers. These robots’ ability to reach places tethered microrobots otherwise could not leads to many possible applications in the body, such as delivering drugs to targeted locations and performing biopsies. This study shows the use of shape memory polymer (SMP) to wirelessly actuate a microgripper to be used by a controllable microrobot to achieve these functions. Many smart materials were analyzed in order to find the material that most effectively would accomplish wirelessly gripping, manipulating, and releasing a microobject. Multiple microgripper designs were designed, …
Thermal Design Of Three-Dimensional Electronic Assemblies, Yifan Weng, Chun-Pei Chen, Ganesh Subbarayan
Thermal Design Of Three-Dimensional Electronic Assemblies, Yifan Weng, Chun-Pei Chen, Ganesh Subbarayan
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Currently, three-dimensional electronic assemblies (3D Packages) are a key technology for enabling heterogeneous integration and “more than Moore” functionality. A critical bottleneck to the viability of 3D Packages is their thermal design. Traditionally, heat spreaders are used as a passive method to reduce the peak temperature as well as temperature gradient on the chip. However, heat spreaders by themselves are often insufficient in stacked, multiple-die containing 3D Packages. Towards this end, to more efficiently remove heat, silicon interposers with through silicon vias (TSV) are used. However, careful design of number and location of TSVs is necessary. In addition, the heat …

Membrane Pre-Treatment Using Chemical Disinfectants In Halide Impaired Waters, Holly M. Haflich, Kun Huang, Amisha D. Shah, John Howarter, Logan Kearney
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The use of membrane filtration processes for desalination, water reuse, and water reclamation techniques are becoming more prevalent given freshwater shortages. However, the treatment of these waters is challenging because of the membranes used in these processes. During nanofiltration and reverse osmosis the membranes undergo biofouling. Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration are high-pressure membrane filtration techniques that treat seawater, brackish waters, and industrial wastewaters. Because of the biofouling, the polyamide thin film needs to be pretreated with chlorine (HOCl/ OCl-) as a disinfectant, but this damages the polyamide membrane. When the free chlorine is in the presence of halide-impaired waters, it …
Carbon Dioxide Sequestration To Form Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles, Krista E. Stump, Michael T. Harris
Carbon Dioxide Sequestration To Form Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles, Krista E. Stump, Michael T. Harris
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The emission of carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels is one of the leading sources of global warming. Reducing the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere through carbon sequestration can mitigate this problem. One method of carbon sequestration is the use of a carbon dioxide scrubber. Once captured, CO2 can be used to create a valuable chemical commodity such as calcium carbonate nanoparticles. To create CaCO3 particles in the 50-100 nanometer range, a chemical additive is necessary to limit particle size. The study used a laboratory scale carbon dioxide scrubber to react CO2 with …

Characterization Of Sprays From Dual Impinging Jets On A Splash Plate, Christopher Vodney, Stephen Heister, Brandon Kan, David Stechmann
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The use of splash plates and dual impinging liquid jets are common methods for fuel atomization, but the combination of these methods has not been explored. The goal of this experiment is to analyze how splash plate position and orientation affect the spray geometry for this combined method. The spray patterns are observed for a single jet against a splash plate and two orientations of dual impinging jets against a splash plate. For all three cases, the spray patterns are analyzed for various splash plate angles between 30 and 60 degrees relative to the jet centerline. For the dual impinging …
Selective Protein Labelling To Visualize Cellular Differentiation, Andrew J. Witten, Tamara L. Kinzer-Ursem
Selective Protein Labelling To Visualize Cellular Differentiation, Andrew J. Witten, Tamara L. Kinzer-Ursem
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Protein post-translational modifications serve to give proteins new cellular function, spatial localization, or enzymatic activity. Myristoylation is a common post-translational modification where the enzyme N-myristoyltransferase adds myristic acid onto the N-terminus of a variety of proteins. In this work we use a myristic acid analog, 12-azidododecanoic acid (12ADA) to facilitate the implementation of azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions on myristoylated proteins. Selective protein labeling methods such as these are useful in research because they can be used to help determine the biological function of this protein lipid modification and can be extended to study disregulated protein myristoylation in disease states. To validate …

Biofuels, combustible fuel produced from fermentation of agricultural biomass by microorganisms, represent one of the best possible paths forward for sustainable energy production. However, inefficiencies in biofuel production create barriers that stand in the way of their widespread adoption. One such barrier is the breakdown of lignin, a biopolymer that exists on the edge of plant cell walls which protects the sugars that are used in fermentation. Currently, lignin is broken down in energy-intensive thermal pretreatment processes. A viable alternative is the expression of lignin-degrading enzymes by synthetic microorganisms that work at standard temperatures, eliminating the need for the high-energy …

Patients with kidney failure usually undergo hemodialysis, a process by which toxins produced by the body are filtered from the blood, in order to survive. The preferred form for vascular access is called an arteriovenousfistula (AVF), a surgically created connection between an artery and vein that is utilized to undergo dialysis. However, AVFs have a failure rate of 50-60%. One of the contributions to AVF failure is endothelial cell dysfunction and loss of glycocalyx, which allows neutrophils and other native cells into the media of the vessel, which causes an inflammatory response. Our lab addresses endothelial dysfunction by mimicking the …

Approach To Increasing Indiana Rural Road Safety On Intersections, Ammanuiel A. Kebede, John E. Haddock
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In 2009, there were more than 17,000 reported fatal crashes in rural areas of United States which accounted 56 percent of total fatal crashes. This number has not declined in a significant amount since 2009. Studies are undergoing on these rural area roadways, including intersections, to identify the major causes and take the necessary countermeasure. By using previous intersection related fatal and injury crash data, it is possible to identify high-risk intersections to point out and make the appropriate improvement. Five year fatal and injury crash data was collected (2008-2012) for three Indiana rural counties that had the highest frequency …

Optical Emission Spectroscopy Diagnostics Of Cold Plasmas For Food Sterilization, Abhijit Jassem, Michael Lauria, Russell Brayfield Ii, Kevin M. Keener, Allen L. Garner
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
There is a growing need for economical, effective, and safe methods of sterilizing fresh produce. The most common method is a chlorine wash, which is expensive and may introduce carcinogens. High voltage cold atmospheric pressure plasmas are a promising solution that has demonstrated a germicidal effect; however, the responsible chemical mechanisms and reaction pathways are not fully understood. To elucidate this chemistry, we used optical emission spectroscopy to measure the species produced in the plasma generated by a 60 Hz pulsed dielectric barrier discharge in a plastic box containing various fill gases (He, N2, CO2, dry …
Development Of A Novel Enzymatic Pre-Treatment For Lignocellulosic Biomass, Melissa Robins, Jenna Rickus
Development Of A Novel Enzymatic Pre-Treatment For Lignocellulosic Biomass, Melissa Robins, Jenna Rickus
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Biofuels, fuels derived directly from living matter, present a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum based fuels. Bioethanol produced from low input energy crops or agricultural waste is a promising fuel source because it does not interfere with the human food supply chain and the ethanol produced can be blended with gasoline. These potential sources of bioethanol are not yet commercially viable due to a polymer called lignin present in the plant’s cell wall which impedes the conversion of cellulose to glucose and the eventual fermentation of glucose to ethanol. Developing new methods for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass …
Dislocation Avalanche Polycrystalline Nickel, Zhiyang Lin, Cao Lei Dr, Marisol Koslowski Prof.
Dislocation Avalanche Polycrystalline Nickel, Zhiyang Lin, Cao Lei Dr, Marisol Koslowski Prof.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Self-organized criticality (SOC) is widely observed in systems ranging from creep deformation of single crystal ice to the movement of glacier. -The behavior of these SOC systems follows a power law distribution, which is time- and space-scale invariant. Previous phase field simulation of single crystal nickel has shown that plastic flow is characterized by intermittent dislocation avalanches, which can be characterized by a power law distribution. Does this scale invariance also exist in polycrystalline material, in which dislocation avalanches may be hindered by grain boundaries? In this study, we characterize the dislocation loops using homogenous region division algorithm and investigate …

Thermal And Mechanical Properties Of Polymers Using Molecular Dynamics, Daniel Glass, Alejandro Strachan, Lorena Alzate-Vargas, Chunyu Li, Benjamin Haley
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Polymer systems have gained attention during the past years because of their technological and industrial applications. Simulations, particularly molecular dynamics, are very useful for exploring properties of amorphous polymers, without using experiments. Our goal is to create a readily-available tool that will perform MD simulations in order to get thermal and mechanical properties (Glass transition temperature, Young Modulus) of the polymers. The work that has been done will be part of a tool to help people to learn about polymer properties including Glass Transition Temperature. We model some polymers at a scale of 10,000 atoms. The tool uses LAMMPS to …
Classification And Visualization Of Crime-Related Tweets, Ransen Niu, Jiawei Zhang, David S. Ebert
Classification And Visualization Of Crime-Related Tweets, Ransen Niu, Jiawei Zhang, David S. Ebert
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Millions of Twitter posts per day can provide an insight to law enforcement officials for improved situational awareness. In this paper, we propose a natural-language-processing (NLP) pipeline towards classification and visualization of crime-related tweets. The work is divided into two parts. First, we collect crime-related tweets by classification. Unlike written text, social media like Twitter includes substantial non-standard tokens or semantics. So we focus on exploring the underlying semantic features of crime-related tweets, including parts-of-speech properties and intention verbs. Then we use these features to train a classification model via Support Vector Machine. The second part is to utilize visual …

Experimental Characterization And Modelling Of Energy Efficient Fluid Supply Systems, Karina M. Bjorklund, Andrea Vacca, Timothy J Opperwall
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In applications such as in agriculture, construction, and aerospace applications, high pressure hydraulics is the preferred technology to transmit mechanical power. As a consequence, the energy efficiency of the hydraulic system used to perform the mechanical actuations is of primary concern to reduce the energy consumptions in the abovementioned applications. In an hydraulic system, the primary component determining the energy efficiency is the hydraulic pump. This work focuses on the study of a particular pump design, also referred as external gear pump, particularly used in applications in which the cost of the hydraulic system has to be minimized. The large …

Nanomechanics Simulation Toolkit - Dislocations Make Or Break Materials, Michael N. Sakano, Alejandro Strachan, David Johnson, Mitchell Wood
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The goal of computational material science is to improve existing materials and design new ones through mathematical calculations. In particular, molecular dynamic simulations can allow for visualization of dislocations in a material, along with its resulting behavior when under stress. For example, plastic deformation and strain hardening result from the movement, multiplication and interaction of dislocations within the crystal structure. A simulation tool to study these phenomena was developed for the nanoHUB web resource as a part of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology at Purdue University and targets audiences ranging from undergraduate students to researchers. We created a user-friendly environment …
Application Of Ultrasound In The Measurement Of Lubricant Fluid Film Thickness In The Piston-Cylinder Interface Of An Axial Piston Pump, Dhruv Subramaniam, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova
Application Of Ultrasound In The Measurement Of Lubricant Fluid Film Thickness In The Piston-Cylinder Interface Of An Axial Piston Pump, Dhruv Subramaniam, Dan Mizell, Monika Ivantysynova
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In this paper a feasibility study has been conducted to determine a technique for the measurement of lubricant fluid film thickness in the piston-cylinder interface of an axial piston pump. The thickness of the lubricant film has a significant impact on the efficiency of the piston pump yet it still remains an uncertainty. If the lubricant film is too thin then friction will cause excessive damage resulting in deformation of interacting surfaces resulting in further uncertainty in thickness measurement. If the lubricant film is too thick then there is excessive leakage which will compromise the efficiency of the system. Acoustic, …
Mechanical Dispersion Of A Semi-Solid Binder In A Wet Granulation Process, Justin W. Perry, James D. Litster, Nathan J. Davis
Mechanical Dispersion Of A Semi-Solid Binder In A Wet Granulation Process, Justin W. Perry, James D. Litster, Nathan J. Davis
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
High viscosity surfactant pastes have recently gained popularity in the production of high efficiency laundry detergents due to their ability to increase surfactant loading in granules. When using high viscosity semi-solid binders a unique challenge is presented because it forces granules to be formed primarily by mechanical dispersion; a relatively poorly understood process. Developing mechanistic models of this process will enhance knowledge of mechanical dispersion processes and improve process development for granules produced using this method. Experiments to determine the effect of three process parameters; paste temperature, impeller RPM, and time were carried out in a lab-scale granulator. Binder temperature …
Numerical Solver For Multiphase Flows, Victor C B Sousa, Carlo Scalo
Numerical Solver For Multiphase Flows, Victor C B Sousa, Carlo Scalo
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The technological development of micro-scale electronic devices is bounded by the challenge of dissipating their heat output. Latent heat absorbed by a fluid during phase transition offers exceptional cooling capabilities while allowing for the design of compact heat exchangers. The understanding of heat transport dynamics in the context of multiphase flow physics is hampered by the limited access to detailed flow features offered by experimental measurements. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can overcome such difficulties by providing a complete description of the three-dimensional instantaneous flow field. Unfortunately, the majority of the numerical investigations in this field at Purdue are carried out …

Evaluation Of Head Impacts On Football, Hockey & Lacrosse Helmets, Goutham N. Sankaran, Eric Nauman
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Despite improvements in helmet design over the years, traumatic brain injury cases (TBI) from heavy contact sports have increased drastically. Newer understanding of said cranial injuries has granted scientists and engineers the capability to develop acceleration measuring devices to precisely quantify and simulate real life impacts. In this research, various football, lacrosse and hockey helmets were stricken on a head form using an impulse hammer that measures transient accelerations. Once data was collected, specifically defined metric plots were generated that provided a normalized analysis of all the helmets’ mitigation abilities. These plots revealed that the lowest translational acceleration metric hailed …

Ultrasound-Guided Nanobubbles For Targeted Drug Delivery, Pei Yang, Pushpak Bhandari, Joseph Irudayaraj
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In a large number of biological and environmental applications, ultrasound (US)-powered micro- and nano-motors have attracted considerable attention. However, their applications in biological settings have been limited due to the incompatibility of metallic motors and the lack of precision guiding. Here, we demonstrate that cellulosic polymer nanobubbles (200-800nm) can be propelled, aligned, accelerated, and assembled in solution using Doppler ultrasound beam (DUB) and simultaneously imaged using low-frequency ultrasound. Results show that by utilizing Doppler ultrasound beam (DUB), nanobubbles accumulation at a pre-determined site can be enhanced. Moreover, bubbles’ trajectory and velocity can be also be manipulated. Related parameters associated with …

Physics I: Classical Mechanics was a physics course offered by an elite private university in the northeastern United States in the fall of 2014. This course was offered in a blended learning format using a MOOC platform. There were 476 students enrolled in the course, but only 266 of them completed the course. In order to better understand the behavior and academic performance of students in this course, several mathematical models were used to examine the relationship between their grades and their use …
Buckling-Driven Force Generation Of Cell Cortex, Pranith Lomada, Wonyeong Jung, Taeyoon Kim
Buckling-Driven Force Generation Of Cell Cortex, Pranith Lomada, Wonyeong Jung, Taeyoon Kim
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Actomyosin cortex, a thin network underlying cell membrane, is known to generate a large portion of tensile forces required for various cellular processes. Recently, theoretical studies predicted that buckling of actin filaments breaks symmetry between tensile and compressive forces developed by myosin motors, resulting in tensile stress at a network level. However, the significance of the filament buckling of the cortex has yet to be demonstrated either computationally or experimentally. Here, buckling-dependent stress generation of the cortex-like actomyosin network was investigated using an agent-based computational model consisting of actin filaments, actin cross-linking proteins (ACPs), and molecular motors. First, a wide …

Harnessing Notch Signaling For Biomaterial Scaffold-Based Bone Regeneration, Helena P. Lysandrou, Chunhui Jiang, Naagarajan Narayanan, Shihuan Kuang, Meng Deng
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Bone fracture has recently become prevalent, especially with an increasingly aging population. Current bone grafts procedures, including autografts and allografts, are hindered by multiple factors, such as limited supplies and inconsistent bone healing. Scaffold-based bone tissue engineering emerges as a prospective strategy to aid in bone regeneration through delivery of growth factors such as bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs). However, the use of BMPs suffers from several drawbacks such as protein instability and immunogenicity. Therefore, there exists a great need for the development of novel therapies to promote bone healing. Notch signaling, a pathway critical for cell-fate determination has been shown …
Test Rig Design For Compact Variable Displacement Vane Pump, Pratik Chawla, Ryan Jenkins, Monika Ivantysynova
Test Rig Design For Compact Variable Displacement Vane Pump, Pratik Chawla, Ryan Jenkins, Monika Ivantysynova
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Variable displacement vane pumps (VDVP) are one type of positive displacement pumps used in automatic transmission vehicles for lubricating the gears, cooling the transmission and actuating the clutches. Though fixed displacement pumps are widely used, they output a constant effective flow at a given speed. Depending on pump sizing considerations, the pump can be oversized at high speeds because flow demand of the transmission is independent of engine speed. The excess flow returns to the tank through an orifice that causes the oil to heat up, increasing the energy required for cooling and reducing the efficiency of the transmission. A …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Lime and/or cement are used to treat weak subgrade soils during construction of highways. These chemicals are mixed with the soil to improve its workability, compactability and engineering properties. INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) has been using chemical modification of native soils for the past 20 years. In fact, 90% of current subgrade is treated, typically with quick lime, lime byproducts or cement. For pavement design, it is customary to not include any improvement of the subgrade for the design of the pavement layers. Recent research completed through JTRP (Joint Transportation Research Program) recommends a higher stiffness modulus for chemically …
