Continuously-reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is widely used in transportation system because of its low maintenance requirement. However, the need for large volumes of steel creates a high cost for new construction. The Illinois Tollway is preparing to substantially renovate highways in and around Chicago and this work seeks to understand how concretes of varying mixture designs can be made thinner by reducing the amount of built-in stress. The experiment examines warping in beams subjected to various degrees of restraint, in an effort to assess effectiveness at reducing warping in continuously reinforced concrete pavements. Value added methodologies such as internal curing …

The coming years will see a surge of billions more devices connected in an “Internet of Things” (IoT) that aim to improve the day to day life of humans by sensing relevant physical phenomena and using the data to make intelligent decisions and predictions. But with current devices, this surge will result in billions more batteries needing to be used and changed regularly. The need for batteries—and its impact—can be mitigated through low power devices that harvest ambient energy (e.g. solar, vibrational, thermoelectric, radio wave), but energy harvesting devices require the ability to continue computations across power cycles, a paradigm …

In the field of soft robotics, hydrogels possess material properties that allow them to function as both soft strain sensors and dielectric elastomer actuators. However, there is still much that needs to be understood about the curing process of hydrogels and the resulting material characteristics before manufacturing these devices can be accomplished. In this study, we investigated the effect of curing time and sample volume on the as-cured material properties of acrylamide-based hydrogels hydrated with lithium and magnesium chloride salt solutions. Samples were cured at room temperature, 60° C and 100° C, and the resulting changes in mechanical stiffness and …

Biofuels synthesized from biomass sources are becoming necessary for sustainable production due to their significantly lower net CO2 production than fuels synthesized from fossil-based carbon sources such as petroleum. Catalytic pathways for the primary biomass-to-biofuels reaction pathway include the isomerization of glucose to fructose, which can be catalyzed by either Lewis acids or bases. Isolated metal atoms and metal oxide particles on Beta zeolites serve as active sites that catalyze this reaction through a Lewis acid 1,2-intramolecular hydride shift or by a Lewis base proton transfer mechanism, respectively. The Lewis acid mechanism has proven to have higher fructose selectivity …

Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy Signal Processing Tool For Materials Research, Scott Mullen, Chang Wan Han, Volkan Ortalan
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Allowing scientists to analyze materials’ structure and chemistry at an atomic level, the electron microscope has become a vital tool in materials engineering. Due to the inherent nature of signals (inelastic electrons or X-ray) having a low signal-to-noise ratio, processing the signal collected with an electron microscope is frequently required and uses sophisticated computer code. The software written to do this can be very difficult to learn and use. To make these tools more easily accessible to new users, we will create a simple user interface and host it online. Using the Rappture development tool, a menu driven graphical user …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Powders are widely used in a countless number of industries, and are crucial to the quality control of products in areas such as pharmaceuticals and food. Particle physicochemical properties (morphology, solid state – crystalline, amorphous or both) are important factors for powder flow, which in turn can have significant impact on the stability, performance, and presentation of powders. Different processing methods as well as storage conditions such as relative humidity (RH) can drastically affect powder flow. Due to the widespread use of chocolate and coffee powder around the world, and their importance to the food industry, this work investigates two …

Employers across the globe are seeking engineers that possess more “soft skills”: leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. In addition to these characteristics as well as the traditional engineering problem solving skills, engineers are required to have attributes of global competency which would help them thrive in the global workforce. A plethora of information and studies exist on undergraduate students and their global competency development. Despite these efforts, there is little information on engineering doctoral students and methods for increasing their levels of global competency. Doctoral students are at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation and discoveries, so it is …

Development Of A Web Application For Continuous Analysis Of Many Cameras (Cam2), Anurag Anjaria, Dr. Yung-Hsiang Lu, Young-Sol Koh, Charles Hansen
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
There are tens of thousands of web cameras located around the world and publicly available on the Internet. The images captured by these cameras contain data relating to our living environment such as traffic patterns, weather and crowd movement. Researchers can capture this data using image analysis techniques on the video and image from these cameras. However, there is a lack of a single, unified repository of all the public cameras on the Internet; this, coupled with the computational demands of image analysis means there is a need for a tool to help researchers perform large-scale image analyis on many …

Optical emission spectroscopy techniques such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and spark-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SIBS) provide portable and robust methods for elemental detection in real-time. Laser-produced emissions are then used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of a sample material with applications in explosives detection. For both techniques, the main obstacles have always been signal intensity, accuracy, and sensitivity of detection. The main advantage of the SIBS method is more safe operation, while still maintaining the portability of the technique. In this study, detailed characterization of spark induced plasma, analyte emission intensity, plasma temperature, electron density, and plasma persistence has been …

Energy loss due to poor transport properties in electrically and thermally conducting materials, such as battery electrodes and thermoelectric composites, contributes to the energy inefficiency of electronic devices. For conductive materials composed of granular materials, particle-particle contact topology strongly governs the efficiency of energy transfer. Although there is a large body of existing work on the arrangements made by granular materials comprised of spherical particles, less is known about the mechanically stable arrangements of granular materials made of convex polyhedra. This project seeks to create a computer simulation of the solidification of convex polyhedra from a diffuse state into a …

Materials modeling provides a cost and time efficient method for studying their properties, especially in nanotechnology where length and time scales are not accessible experimentally. Our research focuses on developing a tool useful for both instructional and research purposes that calculates material properties. The tool relies on density functional theory (DFT) calculations to compute specific properties for a wide range of materials including semiconductors, insulators, and metals. A major goal with our tool was to keep the GUI very simple for novice users, such as students, while retaining an advanced option section for experienced users, such as researchers. The tool …

Grapes used in the wine industry have been one of the highest value crops in the United States. However, with unpredictable weather changes and recent drought in the Western United States, vineyard owners and grape growers have faced difficulties on producing good quality grapes suited for wine making. Therefore, a technology that would keep record of environmental data and incorporate the data to support agricultural decisions will help the growers to produce quality grapes even in extreme conditions. As such, this research focuses on developing an interactive system that uses sensory data and visual analytics to facilitate vineyard management and …

Influences Of Wind On Automotive Interior Sound Quality, Sara Huelsman, Patricia Davies, Daniel Carr
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The effects of noise on human health (both mental and physical) are well known, and motivation to decrease noise in daily life is prevalent. Wind noise within automotive interior cabins could be detrimental to human health and comfort because of the negative impact on speech intelligibility and fatigue overall. There is little information on human perception of wind noise in automobile interiors though Loudness and Articulation Index have been examined as predictors of human response. They have been found to predict well in some circumstances, but not in others. In this research, a variety of sound quality metrics are being …

Altered Combustion Characteristics Of Aluminum Fuels Through Low-Level Fluoropolymer Inclusions With And Without In Situ Nanoaluminum., Courtney K. Murphy, Brandon Terry, Steven F. Son
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Aluminum inclusions have been widely used to increase the specific impulse of solid rocket propellant. However, issues arise with the addition of aluminum in the form of agglomeration, which can cause kinetic and thermal losses (i.e., two-phase flow losses) through the nozzle, which can reduce motor performance by as much as 10%. Reduction of agglomerate size may reduce the effect of two-phase flow losses. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or TeflonTM) inclusions into aluminum via mechanical activation (MA, milling) have been shown to produce a smaller coarse agglomerate size due to microexplosion of the composite particles at the propellant surface. Perflouroalkoxy …

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are rapidly growing as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. However, greater adoption has also reduced government subsidies, placing the onus of making solar panels economically competitive on innovative research. While multiple methods have been considered for reducing costs, with each reduction in cost comes the associated peril of reduction in quality and useful lifetime. Several problems considered solved have now resurfaced as potential failure mechanisms with the introduction of cheaper PV cell technologies. However, to remain economically viable, PV modules will not only have to become cheaper, they will have …

Thermophotovoltaic System Simulation With Realistic Experimental Considerations, Evan L. Schlenker, Zhiguang Zhou, Peter Bermel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems are a promising type of energy generation method that convert heat into electricity via thermal radiation. TPV has potential to benefit the economy, the energy sector, and the environment by converting waste heat from other power generation methods into electricity. Simulations of these systems can play a key role in designing TPV systems and validating their experimental performance. Current simulation tools can model important aspects of TPV systems fairly accurately, but generally make certain simplifying assumptions that are challenging to reproduce in experiments. Developing a simulation tool that accurately captures thermal emission and reflection in complex, realistic …

The performance of plasma facing components (PFC) is of great important for the realization of prototype nuclear fusion. Tungsten has been considered as the leading high-Z PFC material for these reactors and tokamaks due to its superior thermophysical properties, high melting point, low sputtering yield, and low tritium inventory. However, its surface deteriorates significantly under helium ion irradiation in extreme (fusion) conditions and forms nanoscopic fiber like structures (fuzz) Recent studies show that the formation of fuzz nanostructure on tungsten can be suppressed by the presence of plasma impurities such as carbon and beryllium. In the present study, the effects …

Miniature mass spectrometry (MS) system is key for establishing MS as a point-of-care chemical and biological analysis within clinical settings. In order to provide point-of-care diagnostics, ionization methods for direct analysis of biofluids are required. We have previously introduced paper spray and developed the cartridges for direct MS ionization and sampling. Our goal of this research is to identify a viable way to improve the spray efficacy of paper spray for its coupling with miniature MS. As a result, paper capillary spray (PCS) was developed. PCS utilizes ET31 paper with a fused-silica capillary fixated to the tip. The design was …

Study Of Noise Generation Mechanisms In A Turbulent Jet Through Analysis Of Simulation Data, Adam J. Kmiec, Nitin S Dhamankar, Gregory Blaisdell
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Computational simulation techniques produce considerably more information about turbulent jets than experimentation and have the potential to be effective research tools for reducing the noise footprint of jet engine exhaust. There is a need to exploit the large amount of data generated by such simulations to gain a better understanding of the noise generation mechanisms in a jet. Such information can be vital to the design of future noise-reducing nozzle geometries. This project uses the simulation data generated by a large eddy simulation (LES) tool to investigate the creation and propagation of upstream moving sound waves in the potential core …

Examining The Hydration And Mechanical Properties Of Cement Paste Containing Cellulose Nanocrystals, Yvette Valadez-Carranza, Charles Y. Chiu, W. Jason Weiss, Pablo Zavattieri, Jeffrey P. Youngblood
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a nano-scaled particulae material that has been shown to improve strength in cementitious pastes. One advantage of CNCs compared to other nano-materials is that CNCs are renewable and sustainable. The objective of this investigation is to investigate the influence of additional alkali content on the behavior of CNCs in cement paste. This work evaluates flexural and compressive strength as a function of heat of hydration—which measures the extent of reaction. Previous mechanical tests on cement paste containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have shown CNCs to improve the flexural strength of cement paste by approximately 30%. Isothermal calorimetry …

Towards An Optical In-Line Characterization Of Nano Petals, Yiming Ding, Huisung Kim, Euiwon Bae
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Carbon Nano Petals (i.e. CNPs) are cantilevered multilayer grapheme sheets that are seeded from core graphite fibers. The resulting structure offers a possibility of minimizing interfacial losses in transport application, improved interactions with surrounding matrix materials in composites, and a route toward substrate independence for device applications. The mass production of CNPs on the substrate required a method that can provide synchronous feedback on the sample status without pulling them out of the production line. Different optical properties can be observed when surfaces with different roughness are illuminated with a highly coherent light such as a laser beam. Similarly, CNPs …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Organic-inorganic materials synthesis using biological templates has recently drawn immense attention of researchers. Biotemplating has shown to be an efficient and economic means of nanomaterials production. Naturally stable, readily available and genetically malleable, Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) is one of the most extensively studied and characterized biotemplates. Particularly, templated synthesis using TMV has produced high quality nanorods and nanowires that have been applied to batteries, memory devices and catalysis. The fundamental mechanisms, governing the adsorption of palladium on the TMV Wild Type and genetically modified versions (TMV1Cys and TMV2Cys), are not fully understood; this knowledge, however, is essential for future …

Mass-Positioning Of Nanodiamonds Using Squeegee Technique, Ran Cui, Mikhail Y. Shalaginov, Vladimir M. Shalaev
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Fluorescent color centers in diamond nanocrystals have recently become the focus of researchers because of their potential applications in quantum information processing, nano-sensing, biomarking, and bioimaging. One of the biggest challenges in working with nanodiamonds is how to position them precisely and efficiently to create strong interaction with nanoscale photonic structures. The most popular methods to position nanodiamonds are spin-coating and transporting via scanning probe microscope tip. On the one hand, spin-coating, where nanodiamonds are randomly located, is not precise; on the other hand, the tip-based technique, where a single nanodiamond is picked and dropped, is tedious and time-consuming. Hence, …

Simplified Generation Of The Input Models Of Object Oriented Micromagnetic Framework (Oommf), Jinyang Yu, Rafatul Faria, Supriyo Datta, Tanya A. Faltens
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Object Oriented MicroMagnetic Framework (OOMMF) is a micromagnetic simulation tool. It takes a memory initialization file (MIF) as the input and outputs various forms of data such as data table, graph and magnetic configuration plots. It is accurate and fast compared to other existing tools such as MATLAB. Few experimentalists used it in the past, however, due to two main reasons. First, OOMMF requires a specific version of programming environment on the local computer which is difficult to be installed. Second, MIF file is very complicated to code and it also requires users to read a lengthy guidelines. Our solution …

Oil Recovery In Low Temperature And Salinity Reservoir Rock Using Anionic And Anionic/Cationic Surfactant Formulations, Alec D. Bokhart, Ryan Mulvenna, Bryan Boudouris, Rituraj Borgohain, Cliff Johnston
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
As oil reserves are being depleted in the United States, there is an increasing need to recover the trapped oil in the reservoir rock which accounts for up to 60% of the total oil available. This oil may be recovered using chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques. In our case study, we investigated viable EOR surfactant/polymer formulations for conditions conducive to high efficiency oil recovery in ultra-low salinity, low temperature, and high hardness reservoirs. Formulations were screened for Winsor Phase I (microemulsions) or Winsor Phase III (bicontinuous emulsions),: both of which are conducive to high efficiency oil recovery. Strong emulsion …
Earth Magnetosphere Model Investigations For Coupled Orbit-Attitude Space Debris Perturbations, Eiji Shibata, Carolin Frueh Dr.
Earth Magnetosphere Model Investigations For Coupled Orbit-Attitude Space Debris Perturbations, Eiji Shibata, Carolin Frueh Dr.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
As more objects are placed into orbit, collisions become increasingly more likely, leading to a so-called Kessler Syndrome: collisions between existing debris creates more debris, causing a cascading effect of larger amounts of debris being put into orbit, even in the absence of launches, making future space fairing difficult or impossible. Natural forces influence the orbit and attitude of uncontrolled debris objects. The natural plasma environment can lead to space object charging. The subsequent orbital movement in the geomagnetosphere induces Lorentz forces that act both on the orbit and attitude of the space object. Those forces have not been investigated …

Dissolution Of Chalcogens In Amine Thiol Solvents For Use In Nanoparticles, Gaurav A. Mittal, Caleb K. Miskin, Rakesh Agrawal
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Lead chalcogenide quantum dots have been shown to be ideal materials for solar cells due to their tunable band gap. Developing a dissolution procedure for chalcogens will help lower the production cost of the solar cells produced by the associated nanoparticles. Dissolution was performed in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. Precursors for sulfur and selnium were dissolved in both the aqueous solution of ammonium thioglycolate and ammonium hydroxide and in combinations of amines and thiols. Precursors for tellurium were dissolved in ethylenediamine and different thiols. Lead telluride forms larger microparticles that can be suitable for thermoelectric devices. The optimum solutions …

The VALET (Visual Analytics Law Enforcement Toolkit) system allows the user to visualize and predict crime hotspots and analyze crime data. Police officers have difficulty in using VALET in a mobile situation, since the system allows only conventional input interfaces (keyboard and mouse). This research focuses on introducing a new input interface to VALET in the form of speech recognition, which allows the user to interact with the software without losing functionality. First an Application Program Interface (API) that was compatible with the VALET system was found and initial code scripts to test its functionality were written. Next, the code …

P-Band Satellite Remote Sensing Antenna, Nishtha Sinha, James L. Garrison, Lin Yao-Cheng
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Today, there are a huge number of satellites out there in the space orbiting the earth, and there are specific frequency bands allocated for data transmission from these satellites. Signals from these satellites can be accessed at different places on earth, and used for remote sensing. Lower frequency bands are being used in this project, which have not been used earlier for remote sensing. The main idea of this study is to use the properties of two P-band communication satellites to assess their utility for ‘reflectometry’. This remote sensing method is based upon the comparison of the direct and reflected …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
More than half of the annual energy consumption in the United States is lost as waste heat. Polymer-based thermoelectric devices have the potential to utilize this waste heat both sustainably and cost-effectively. Although conjugated polymers currently dominate research in organic thermoelectrics, the potential of using polymers with radical pendant groups have yet to be realized. These polymers have been found to be as conductive as pristine (i.e., not doped) poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), a commonly-used charge-transporting conjugated polymer. This could yield promising avenues for thermoelectric material design as radical polymers are more synthetically tunable and are hypothesized to have a high Seebeck …
