A New Approach For Realistic 3d Reconstruction Of Planar Surfaces From Laser Scanning Data And Imagery Collected Onboard Modern Low-Cost Aerial Mapping Systems, Zahra Lari, Naser El-Sheimy, Ayman Habib

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Over the past few years, accurate 3D surface reconstruction using remotely-sensed data has been recognized as a prerequisite for different mapping, modelling, and monitoring applications. To fulfill the needs of these applications, necessary data are generally collected using various digital imaging systems. Among them, laser scanners have been acknowledged as a fast, accurate, and flexible technology for the acquisition of high density 3D spatial data. Despite their quick accessibility, the acquired 3D data using these systems does not provide semantic information about the nature of scanned surfaces. Hence, reliable processing techniques are employed to extract the required information for 3D …

Multi-Resolution Codebook And Adaptive Beamforming Sequence Design For Millimeter Wave Beam Alignment, Song Noh, Michael D. Zoltowski, David J. Love Feb 2017

Multi-Resolution Codebook And Adaptive Beamforming Sequence Design For Millimeter Wave Beam Alignment, Song Noh, Michael D. Zoltowski, David J. Love

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is expected to be widely deployed in fifth generation (5G) wireless networks due to the substantial bandwidth available at mmWave frequencies. To overcome the higher path loss observed at mmWave bands, most prior work focused on the design of directional beamforming using analog and/or hybrid beamforming techniques in largescale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Obtaining potential gains from highly directional beamforming in practical systems hinges on sufficient levels of channel estimation accuracy, where the problem of channel estimation becomes more challenging due to the substantial training overhead needed to sound all directions using a high-resolution narrow beam. …

Road Zipper™, Purdue Ect Team Feb 2017

Road Zipper™, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

Construction work zones are growing in number around the world. The natural aging of existing roadway infrastructure ensures that more and more maintenance and rehabilitation will be required. Work zones, by their very definition, create two major problems that must be addressed in some way: safety and mobility. In the United States, highway work zones are responsible for almost 25% of all non-recurring congestion and 10% of overall congestion. Vehicle accidents are more common in work zones, and traffic congestion through work zones on urban arterials and freeways is often considered to be “unavoidable." To address these issues, ROAD ZIPPER™ …

Thermal Transport At The Nanoscale: A Fourier's Law Vs. Phonon Boltzmann Equation Study, Jan Kaiser, T. Feng, Jesse Maassen, X. Wang, X. Ruan, Mark S. Lundstrom

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Steady-state thermal transport in nanostructures with dimensions comparable to the phonon mean-free-path is examined. Both the case of contacts at different temperatures with no internal heat generation and contacts at the same temperature with internal heat generation are considered. Fourier’s Law results are compared to finite volume method solutions of the phonon Boltzmann equation in the gray approximation. When the boundary conditions are properly specified, results obtained using Fourier’s Law without modifying the bulk thermal conductivity are in essentially exact quantitative agreement with the phonon Boltzmann equation in the ballistic and diffusive limits. The errors between these two limits are …

Simulation Of Dust Grain Charging Under Tokamak Plasma Conditions, Zhuang Liu, Dezhen Wang, Gennady Miloshevsky

School of Nuclear Engineering Faculty Publications

Dust grains in fusion devices may be radioactive, contain toxic substances, and may penetrate into the core plasma resulting in the termination of plasma discharges. Therefore, it is important to study the charging mechanisms of dust grains under tokamak's plasma conditions. In this paper, the charging processes of carbon dust grains in fusion plasmas are investigated using the developed dust simulation (DS) code. The Orbital Motion Limited (OML) theory, which is a common tool when solving dust-charging problems, is used to study the charging of dust grains due to the collection of plasma ions and electrons. The secondary electron emission …

Reading And Engineering: Elementary Students’ Co-Application Of Comprehension Strategies And Engineering Design Processes, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Stacie Gregory, Victor Larsen

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

For decades, researchers have asserted that K–12 teachers should embed reading comprehension instruction within each academic discipline, including ‘‘technical subjects’’ such as engineering. Recently, this assertion has become a source of controversy among researchers and practitioners who believe that time spent on teaching reading comprehension strategies may detract from time spent on more authentic activities such as engineering design. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate whether and how elementary students’ applications of comprehension strategies overlapped with their application of engineering design processes. The authors provided comprehension strategy instruction to 57 third- and fifth-grade students as they read …

Real-Time Sensing Of Trust In Human-Machine Interactions, Wan-Lin Hu, Kumar Akash, Neera Jain, Tahira Reid

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Human trust in automation plays an important role in successful interactions between humans and machines. To design intelligent machines that can respond to changes in human trust, real-time sensing of trust level is needed. In this paper, we describe an empirical trust sensor model that maps psychophysiological measurements to human trust level. The use of psychophysiological measurements is motivated by their ability to capture a human's response in real time. An exhaustive feature set is considered, and a rigorous statistical approach is used to determine a reduced set of ten features. Multiple classification methods are considered for mapping the reduced …

Disciplinary Differences In Out-Of-School High School Science Experiences And Influence On Students’ Engineering Choices, Allison Godwin, Gerhard Sonnert, Philip M. Sadler

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Participation from a variety of students is important to the long-term growth of the engineering field. Much of the research on engineering recruitment or career choice has focused on engineering as a whole, even though engineering disciplines are varied in student participation and focus. This work examines how students’ out-of-school interests and experiences in high school predict the likelihood of choosing a career in a particular engineering discipline. Out-of-school experiences offer more unstructured ways for students to meaningfully engage with science and engineering outside of the confines of the classroom. These experiences offer opportunities to spark particular science interests not …

Multi-Stage Nozzle-Shape Optimization For Pulsed Hydrogen-Air Detonation Combustor, Francesco Ornano, James Braun, Bayindir H. Saracoglu, Guillermo Paniagua

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

hermal engines based on pressure gain combustion offer new opportunities to generate thrust with enhanced efficiency and relatively simple machinery. The sudden expansion of detonation products from a single-opening tube yields thrust, although this is suboptimal. In this article, we present the complete design optimization strategy for nozzles exposed to detonation pulses, combining unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solvers with the accurate modeling of the combustion process. The parameterized shape of the nozzle is optimized using a differential evolution algorithm to maxi mize the force at the nozzle exhaust. The design of experiments begins with a first optimization considering steady-flow conditions, subsequently …

Engineering Technology Vs. Engineering Students: Differences In Perception And Understanding, Anne M. Lucietto, Jennifer D. Moss, Eddy Efendy, R. Mark French

IMPACT Publications

Engineering technology students either are studied under the auspices of research focused on engineering students, or are excluded from engineering research in its entirety. Even when they are included in research, our understanding of engineering technology students is either missing or obscured. The lack of available research focused on engineering technology students in particular has prompted an effort to contribute to the greater body of knowledge of engineering technology education. The lack of research, as compared to other STEM fields, presents a challenge to practitioners in engineering technology programs when making discipline-specific decisions regarding these particular students.

The need to …

Stability And Interfacial Viscoelasticity Of Oil-Water Nanoemulsions Stabilized By Soy 2 Lecithin And Tween 20 For The Encapsulation Of Bioactive Carvacrol, Jerome J. Nash, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The rheology of oil-in-water (O/W) droplet interfaces stabilized by food-grade emulsifiers (soy lecithin or Tween 20) under controlled aqueous conditions was investigated to elucidate its contribution in the kinetic stabilization of nanoemulsion-based delivery systems containing carvacrol, a naturally-derived antimicrobial compound. Dilational rheology of surfactant-laden O/W interfaces was measured using axisymmetric drop shape analysis. The kinetic stability of corresponding nanoemulsions (containing mixtures of carvacrol and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil dispersed in water (pH 7)) was characterized using dynamic light scattering. Zwitterionic lecithin molecules adsorbed to the O/W interface for 24 h formed a notably viscoelastic layer, compared to nonionic Tween 20 …
