Analysis Of Metallic Shielding For Reduction Of Rf Induced Heating Of Electrode During Mri For Active Implants, Krishna M. Singhal
Analysis Of Metallic Shielding For Reduction Of Rf Induced Heating Of Electrode During Mri For Active Implants, Krishna M. Singhal
Open Access Dissertations
The options available to patients with implantable devices are limited. It is because there are multiple interactions between the MRI environment and the implantable medical devices. The three main components of MRI systems- static magnet, RF coil, and a gradient coil- interact with the implantable medical devices. These interactions can cause force, torque, device vibrations and RF-induced heating. Among all these potential hazards is the heating caused by the RF electromagnetic field. The lead wires of the implants can act as antennas and pick up the electric field generated by the RF coil. This results in the induced current traveling …
Misconceptions And The Notional Machine In Very Young Programming Learners, Tony A. Lowe
Misconceptions And The Notional Machine In Very Young Programming Learners, Tony A. Lowe
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
This study looks at very young learners make mistakes and possibly form misunderstanding when learning to programming. A variety of national efforts are extending programming education to younger learners who are materials many adults struggle to learn. For decades literature has captured common misconceptions in using programming constructs (e.g. conditionals, loops, and recursion) in older learners, but early learners may wait years before they tackle these complex concepts. Many model misconceptions as a missing or inaccurate notional machine. The notional machine is an individual’s mental model, representing how a programming language executes on a real device. The notional machine aligns …

Rotational and oscillatory shear rheometry were used to quantify the flow behavior under minimal and significant solvent evaporation conditions for polymer solutions used to fabricate isoporous asymmetric membranes by the self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) method. Three different A-B-C triblock terpolymer chemistries of similar molar mass were evaluated: polyisoprene-^-polystyrene-6-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (ISV); polyisoprene-6- polystyrene-6-poly(V,A-dimethylacrylamide) (ISD); and polyisoprene-Z>-polystyrene-h-poly(fer/- butyl methacrylate) (ISB). Solvent evaporation resulted in the formation of a viscoelastic film typical of asymmetric membranes. Solution viscosity and film viscoelasticity were strongly dependent on the chemical structure of the triblock terpolymer molecules. A hierarchical magnitude (ISV>ISB>ISD) was observed …

The importance of reducing the gender gap in engineering programs by recruiting and retaining female students is well recognized. Although women hold roughly half of all jobs in the United States, only 24% of STEM jobs are occupied by women. The problem is even more pronounced for engineering, where women held about 12% of jobs as of 2013 (Corbett & Hill, 2015). Consequently, interactive, hands-on outreach programs are a common tool used by universities to encourage interest in engineering from K–12 students. Engineering—Get Into Real Learning (E-GIRL) is a week-long, residential summer program offered by Texas Tech University for female …

Controllable Internal Mixing In Coalescing Droplets Induced By The Solutal Marangoni Convection Of Surfactants With Distinct Headgroup Architectures, Jerome J. Nash, Patrick T. Spicer, Kendra Erk
Controllable Internal Mixing In Coalescing Droplets Induced By The Solutal Marangoni Convection Of Surfactants With Distinct Headgroup Architectures, Jerome J. Nash, Patrick T. Spicer, Kendra Erk
School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Through several complementary experiments, an investigation of the bulk and interfacial flows that emerged during the coalescence of two water-in-oil droplets with asymmetric compositional properties was performed. By adding surfactant to one of the coalescing droplets and leaving the other surfactant-free, a strong interfacial tension gradient (i.e., solutal Marangoni) driving energy between the merging droplets generated pronounced internal mixing. The contributions of two distinct types of surfactant, anionic ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS) and cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the rate of coalescence bridge expansion and on the generation of opposing flows during coalescence were investigated. All coalescence experiments supported the …
A Learning-Centered Educational Paradigm: Case Study On Engineering Technology Students’ Design, Problem-Solving, Communication, And Group Skills, Rustin Webster
School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This case study explores how a learning-centered educational paradigm affects undergraduate engineering technology (ET) students’ engineering design, problem-solving, communication, and group skills. Evidence for the study comes from twenty-three mechanical engineering technology students enrolled in a first-year engineering design and documentation (e.g., technical drawings) course. Part three of the four-part Classroom Activities and Outcomes Survey measured the extent to which the students believed they had made progress in a variety of learning and skill development areas because of the course (i.e., indirect assessment). The end-of-semester survey indicated that the learning-centered paradigm produced positive learning and skill gains in the four …

Board 85 : Cadcompare™: A Web-Based Application That Compares Pdf Cad Drawings, Lukas W. Dibeneditto, Rustin Webster
School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This work in progress describes the development of a web application titled CADcompare™, which automatically compares, displays, and highlights differences in Portable Document Format (PDF) files of computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and is specifically designed to compare multiple student files to an instructor's grading key. CADcompare augments the grading process of technical and engineering CAD drawings by highlighting differences that can be easily missed by a human grader, such as incorrect line type(s), color(s), or double lines (i.e., lines on top of each other). Some CAD software has built-in comparison tools, however, none of the comparison tools accept PDF files …
Numerical Assessment Of The Convective Heat Transfer In Rotating Detonation Combustors Using A Reduced-Order Model, James Braun, Jorge Sousa, Guillermo Paniagua
Numerical Assessment Of The Convective Heat Transfer In Rotating Detonation Combustors Using A Reduced-Order Model, James Braun, Jorge Sousa, Guillermo Paniagua
School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications
The pressure gain across a rotating detonation combustor offers an efficiency rise and potential architecture simplification of compact gas turbine engines. However, the combustor walls of the rotating detonation combustor are periodically swept by both detonation and oblique shock waves at several kilohertz, disrupting the boundary layer, resulting in a rather complex convective heat transfer between the fluid and the solid walls. A computationally fast procedure is presented to calculate this extraordinary convective heat flux along the detonation combustor. First, a numerical model combining a two-dimensional method of characteristics approach with a monodimensional reaction model is used to compute the …

Why Latent Representations In Convolutional Neural Networks Fall Outside Visual Space, Katerina Malakhova
Why Latent Representations In Convolutional Neural Networks Fall Outside Visual Space, Katerina Malakhova
MODVIS Workshop
It is common to compare properties of visual information processing by artificial neural networks and the primate visual system.
Some remarkable similarities were observed in the responses of neurons in IT cortex and units in higher layers of CNNs. Here I show that latent representations formed by weights in convolutional layers do not necessarily reflect visual domain. Instead they are strongly dependent on a choice of training set and cost function.
The most striking example is when an individual unit, which is highly selective to some members of a category is, nevertheless, inhibited by visually similar objects of the same …

Ascertaining The Impact Of P–12 Engineering Education Initiatives: Student Impact Through Teacher Impact, Marissa H. Forbes, Jacquelyn F. Sullivan, Denise W. Carlson
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The widespread need to address both science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and STEM workforce development is persistent. Underscored by the Next Generation Science Standards, demand is high for P–12 engineering-centered curricula. TeachEngineering is a free, standards-aligned NSF-funded digital library of more than 1,500 hands-on, design-rich K–12 engineering lessons and activities. Beyond anonymous site-user counts, the impact of the TeachEngineering collection and outreach initiatives on the education of children and their teachers was previously unknown. Thus, the project team wrestled with the question of how to meaningfully ascertain classroom impacts of the digital engineering education library and—more broadly—how to …

How To Shape Attitudes Toward Stem Careers: The Search For The Most Impactful Extracurricular Clubs, Fethiye Ozis, Ali Osman Pektas, Mustafa Akca, Daniel’Le April Devoss
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
It is well known that strong extracurricular STEM programs provide multiple arenas for students to expand on classroom curriculum, complementing STEM skills with creative thinking and open-ended problem solving. It has been shown that there is a relationship between the number of STEM clubs students participated in and their choice of STEM major (Sahin, 2013). Considering financial problems, including budget cuts, it gets really challenging for schools to provide a plethora of clubs. For this reason, it would be very beneficial for K–12 schools to know if certain clubs are more effective in changing attitudes toward STEM majors, and therefore …

Understanding How Engineering Identity And Belongingness Predict Grit For First-Generation College Students, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin, Adam Kirn, Lisa Benson, Geoff Potvin
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
Increasing the participation of underrepresented students, including first-generation college students, in engineering plays a central role in sustaining the U.S. research and innovation capacity. Diversity continues to be recognized as an asset in engineering. However, we also know that the culture of engineering has an implicit assumption about who can be and who is recognized as an engineer. There is also a complex relationship between participation in a community of practice and identity. Diverse students must not only author an identity as an engineer but also must grapple with how that identity, historically constructed as white and masculine, becomes a …

First-Generation College Students Identifying As Future Engineers, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
This paper seeks to understand factors that influence how first-generation college students identify as engineers now and in the future. Data used in this study came from four U.S. institutions obtaining a total first-generation college student sample of 596 participants. We used future possible selves as a lens to understand how first-generation college students’ current views of themselves as engineers shape their future identities as engineers. Two separate analyses were conducted. First, a multiple regression analysis was used to determine which career future satisfaction variables predicted first-generation college students current and future identification as engineers. Second, a hierarchical regression analysis …

Engineering Women’S Attitudes And Goals In Choosing Disciplines With Above And Below Average Female Representation, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin, Adam Kirn, Lisa Benson, Geoff Potvin
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
Women’s participation in engineering remains well below that of men at all degree levels. However, despite the low enrollment of women in engineering as a whole, some engineering disciplines report above average female enrollment. We used multiple linear regression to examine the attitudes, beliefs, career outcome expectations, and career choice of first-year female engineering students enrolled in below average, average, and above average female representation disciplines in engineering. Our work begins to understand how the socially constructed masculine cultural norms of engineering may attract women differentially into specific engineering disciplines. This study used future time perspective, psychological personality traits, grit, …
