The Design, Construction, And Operation Of A Conducting Field Analog Computer., Richard T. Johnson Jan 1964

The Design, Construction, And Operation Of A Conducting Field Analog Computer., Richard T. Johnson

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to design and construct a simple conducting field analog to solve problems described by the two-dimensional Poisson or Laplace equations. Decisions concerning choice of conducting media, construction of problem models, and design and construction of a specialized power supply with instrumentation were based on the results of previous experiments. Several problems are solved using the designed apparatus. Partial solutions to these problems are displayed in graphical form.

The greatest deviation of the experimental results from iterative values was consistently less than 8%. In most cases the deviation was less than 6%. The console arrangement …

A Study Of Rotational Critical Speeds For A Multi-Mass System By Influence Coefficients, Kantikumar G. Patel Jan 1964

A Study Of Rotational Critical Speeds For A Multi-Mass System By Influence Coefficients, Kantikumar G. Patel

Masters Theses

"In this investigation an attempt has been made to determine the critical speeds of a multi-mass rotational system by using influence coefficients. Modes of vibrations are also examined at these critical speeds.

A shaft carrying five masses, supported by bearings at the ends, has been studied analytically. The length of the bearings is considered small with respect to the shaft length and therefore, the configuration is assumed to be point supported as a simple beam. The five masses, each weighing one pound, were placed at equal distances of 10 inches on a 60 inch shaft. The critical speed was examined …

Minimum Frictional Characteristics Of Optimum Journal Bearings., Navinchandra F. Shah Jan 1964

Minimum Frictional Characteristics Of Optimum Journal Bearings., Navinchandra F. Shah

Masters Theses

"This investigation was conducted to develop a graphical representation to determine the optimum bearing conditions for minimum friction and to establish a theoretical approach for journal bearing design.

A series of graphs has been plotted for· the coefficient of friction versus the eccentricity ratio based on the. Sommerfeld number derived from Reynolds' differential equation, f or optimum journal bearings.

The results obtained in this research have been compared with those developed by other investigators. This comparison confirms the validity of the results presented in this thesis, so that it could be used advantageously for the design of optimum journal bearings"-- …

A Laboratory Model Study Of Fluid Cross Flow., James Gary Fore Jan 1964

A Laboratory Model Study Of Fluid Cross Flow., James Gary Fore

Masters Theses

"A procedure for scaling and operating a laboratory model for the purpose of studying fluid crossflow between zones of different permeability is presented. A modified existing model is used to simulate conditions for three dimensional, incompressible, two-phase flow through a two-layer, unconsolidated, homogeneous porous medium.

Eight tests were made to show effects on crossflow between the zones. Qualitative results indicate crossflow from the high to the low permeability zone for various perforation ratios and mobility ratios"--Abstract, p. ii

A Thermodynamic Study Of The Zirconium-Sulfur, Titanium-Sulfur And Hafnium-Sulfur Systems In The Disulfide-Trisulfide Region, Norbert Achilles Vermaut

Doctoral Dissertations

"A static method was used to study the equilibria which exist between the higher sulfides of zirconium and sulfur at temperatures from 700° to 1000 °C. Both disulfide and trisulfide have been identified by chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction. There exists a two-phase region of 'ZrS2' and 'ZrS3'. The composition limit of the homogeneous disulfide phase appears to exist between ZrS1.90 and ZrS2.00. The lower composition limit of the homogeneous region of the trisulfide phase was established as ZrS2.75.

An experimental method of Blitz and co-workers, i.e., the use of evacuated …

Mechanism Of Siliconizing Of Molybdenum And Tantalum By Vapor Deposition, Gordon Pu Kong Chu Jan 1964

Mechanism Of Siliconizing Of Molybdenum And Tantalum By Vapor Deposition, Gordon Pu Kong Chu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Molybdenum and tantalum were siliconized in an enclosed system by the hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride with induction heating between 900°C and 1450°C.

The siliconizing process was primarily influenced by the gaseous composition, temperature, time, molar flow ratio (SiCl4/H2), geometrical shape and ionization charges. The rate of siliconizing, measured as the weight gain by the fused quartz helix balance, generally follows a parabolic law, y = k t1/2, where y = weight gain, t = time, and k = rate constant. The activation energy is estimated at 21.6 k cal/mole for siliconizing of molybdenum. …

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch Jan 1964

A Study Of Turbulent Mass Transfer In A Wetted-Wall Column, David William Bunch

Doctoral Dissertations

"The field of mass transfer is one of great interest to the chemical engineer. An understanding of this field is vital in the design of many types of chemical processing equipment, particularly in the areas of distillation, extraction, absorption, adsorption, and reactor analysis and design.

However, much of the knowledge in this area at the present time is in the form of empirical relationships, and the basic theory is still not well delineated. This lack of understanding leads to expensive and over-sized or under-sized equipment.

A particular area within this field which needs additional investigation is the theory of mass …

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher Feb 1963

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In Progress Report No.1, it was reported that the initial conception of the problem was that diaphragms act almost exclusively in shear when called upon to brace compression members, and that it had been decided to test single columns with finite widths of diaphragm attached, with width of the sheet being varied to provide a range of lateral support up to that which permitted full column strength, based on strong axis to be developed. However, the first test of this kind, Test CB-l, clearly indicated that the diaphragm acted essentially in flexure only and thus had the same effect …

Electrolytic Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete., Lawrence D. Green Jan 1963

Electrolytic Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete., Lawrence D. Green

Masters Theses

"Deterioration of bridge decks has increased the interest in the corrosion of steel in concrete. A comprehensive review of literature on the subject of electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete is presented in this thesis.

Development of theory from the literature leads to the following statements. There are two causes for electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete, stray currents from direct current power sources and the formation of macro-cells within the structure. The corrosion caused by the macro-cells appears to be the more important of the two. Anodic areas exhibit corrosion of the steel and cracking of the concrete.

Many …

The Chemical Oxidation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonates With Potassium Permanganate., Rameshchandra M. Patel

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical oxidation of alkyl benzene sulfonates with potassium permanganate. ABS concentrations of 3, 5 and 10 mg/1, and potassium permanganate dosages of 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/1 were used. The study was made in deionized water at room temperature and a pH value of 8.5. A 5-hour detention period was provided. The ABS concentration, potassium permanganate concentration, foam volume and foam stability were the main parameters employed.

It was found that potassium permanganate significantly reduced the ABS concentration and foam volume. The rate of the oxidation …

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin Jan 1963

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin

Masters Theses

"The problem presented is a study, by simulation on an analog computer, of a time optimum "bang bang" control system with a second order plant. Phase plane analysis techniques are used to describe the performance of the second order plant under the action of a maximum effort controller. From this, the system logic is developed for time optimum response to a step reference input. A fast time model of the plant is used to obtain repeated high-speed extrapolations of the plant outputs, at the same time a linear predictor generates future values of the reference. The error functions thus found …

Analysis Of Problems In The Performance Of A Natural Gas Storage Reservoir., Gerald Eugene Henderson Jan 1963

Analysis Of Problems In The Performance Of A Natural Gas Storage Reservoir., Gerald Eugene Henderson

Masters Theses

"A digital computer technique is presented for predicting two parameters of underground natural gas storage reservoir performance: (1) the prediction of reservoir pressures and volumes, and (2) the prediction of optimum flow rate and pressure drawdown for a single well in accordance with the theory of water coning.

The outlined procedure for predicting gas storage reservoir pressures and volumes was not effective for the field studies, although certain conclusions have been drawn which should be beneficial in further studies.

The procedure for predicting optimum gas flow rate and pressure drawdown from a well without production of bottom water involved first …

Development Of A Technique For The Determination Of Capillary Pressure Curves Using A Constantly Accelerated Centrifuge, Robert N. Hoffman Jan 1963

Development Of A Technique For The Determination Of Capillary Pressure Curves Using A Constantly Accelerated Centrifuge, Robert N. Hoffman

Masters Theses

"A new technique for determining capillary pressure curves with a centrifuge has been developed and tested. Capillary pressure curves were determined for six cores by this technique and were compared to the curves for the same cores determined by the semi-permeable barrier technique. The technique differs from previously reported centrifuge techniques in that the centrifuge was slowly accelerated from zero to the maximum desired speed, rather than being held constant at particular, progressively higher speeds. An important advantage of this technique over other methods for determining capillary pressure curves is the short time required to obtain the desired amount of …

Values of x ranged from 0.01 to 0.126 and values of x. from 0.001 to 0.230.

Dissolution rates were determined using a gas evolution technique. Temperatures were varied from 5 to 45°C. The hydrogen evolution rates were converted to TiOXNY dissolution rates by means of …

Missouri School Of Mines Antenna Range Design., Russell Melvin Ousley Jan 1963

Missouri School Of Mines Antenna Range Design., Russell Melvin Ousley

Masters Theses

"The problem was to design, construct and evaluate an antenna range which could be used in future research and instructional programs. The basic theory of range design and practical considerations were studied and a range was then designed and built from equipment which was either immediately applicable, applicable after modification or constructed to fit the needs of the range. Tests were made to determine the performance characteristics of the system with respect to the more important design parameters. Suggestions were given for future improvement of operation and expansion of the range capabilities"--Abstract p. ii

A Study Of A Method For Determining Properties Of Metals At High Strain Rates., Warren Heidbreder Jan 1963

A Study Of A Method For Determining Properties Of Metals At High Strain Rates., Warren Heidbreder

Masters Theses

"An experimental method has been developed for determining the tensile and other physical properties of metals under high loading rates. Experimental equipment was designed, fabricated and tested. It was desirable to keep the equipment simple and inexpensive so that it could be used by operators Lacking experience in electronics and high-speed photography which are required for some of the more sophisticated methods now in use. The energy for pulling the specimens is supplied by smokeless gun powder. The firing of a cartridge into a closed cylinder with movable piston accomplishes the breaking of the specimen. A record of the time, …

Separation Of Radioactive Fission Products By Electrodialysis Using Aminopolycarboxylic Acids., Harry C. Hershey Jan 1963

Separation Of Radioactive Fission Products By Electrodialysis Using Aminopolycarboxylic Acids., Harry C. Hershey

Masters Theses

"The development of nuclear fission reactors to convert nuclear energy into electrical energy for use in industry, public utilities, military applications, and space exploration has resulted in ever increasing quantities of radioactive waste solutions. Significant reductions in nuclear fuel costs will be obtained when economical processes have been developed for recovery and purification of valuable fission products which are contained in radioactive waste solutions and are in demand for many research applications.

The United States Atomic Energy Commission has supported exhaustive studies to recover fission products by processes involving the more common unit operations such as extraction, distillation, crystallization, and …

A Study Of Chemical Stabilization Of The Swell Properties Of Putman Soil, Dale E. Dobson Jan 1963

A Study Of Chemical Stabilization Of The Swell Properties Of Putman Soil, Dale E. Dobson

Masters Theses

"The theory of chemical stabilization of a swelling clay was reviewed. The effect of several chemicals on the engineering properties of Putnam soil was investigated using the Atterberg tests. Strength of concentration of chemical additives versus preferred structural orientation of treated Putnam was investigated using sedimentation procedures similar to those used in the hydrometer analysis of fine grained soil sizes. Swell tests were conducted under a static load of 1.25 psi on untreated Putnam, Putnam in combination with sodium carbonate, and Putnam treated with calcium hydroxide. These tests were conducted at varying initial moisture contents and dry densities.

It was …

Methods For Synthesizing A Four-Bar Mechanism So It Will Have A Low Value Of Jerk., Ronald D. Brenner Jan 1963

Methods For Synthesizing A Four-Bar Mechanism So It Will Have A Low Value Of Jerk., Ronald D. Brenner

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to find a method of synthesis, for a four-bar mechanism, so that the mechanism that is synthesized will have a low value of jerk. In the field of synthesis there has been little or no effort made to consider jerk when designing mechanisms.

Jerk is defined as the time rate of change of acceleration. Jerk can also be expressed as being proportional to the time rate of change of the inertia forces. When the jerk is large the effect on the link of a mechanism is the same as that of an impact load. …

The Effect Of Shear Deformation On The Slope Deflection Coefficients., Rajni C. Amin Jan 1963

The Effect Of Shear Deformation On The Slope Deflection Coefficients., Rajni C. Amin

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the effect of shear deformation on stiffness coefficients and carry over factors that are normally used in the calculation of moments in continuous beam or frames by the slope-deflection and Moment Distribution method.

Using the method of total strain energy, the vertical shear V and angle of rotation Ө caused by unit moment were determined for bending moment only and then determined for shear deformation plus bending moment, then carry over factors and stiffness coefficients were computed for each case. The relative effect of shear deformation is small for small depth ratio db …

Permeability And Adsorbed Flow Of Carbon Dioxide And Propene Through Porous Silica., Jorgen Lovland Jan 1963

Permeability And Adsorbed Flow Of Carbon Dioxide And Propene Through Porous Silica., Jorgen Lovland

Masters Theses

"It has been known for over a century that gases diffuse through some porous barriers at a rate inversely proportional to the square root of the molecular weight. The difference in diffusion rate can obviously be used to separate gases with different molecular weight. Since other methods for separation like distillation and adsorption usually are simpler and cheaper, separation by gaseous diffusion has found few practical applications. One notable exception is the separation of the gaseous hexafluorides of u238 and u235.

Later investigations on the permeation of gases through porous materials have shown that when gases diffuse …

A Study Of The Angular Velocity In A Liquid Induced By A Vortex In An Emptying Container, James Paul Hartman Jan 1963

A Study Of The Angular Velocity In A Liquid Induced By A Vortex In An Emptying Container, James Paul Hartman

Masters Theses

"Previously a limited amount of investigation has been done to describe the rotational motion of fluid in a draining tank. To date tank design has been based on trial and error, since the physical mechanisms of actual draining have not been recognized. This investigation has been made to develop a technique for the measurement of the motion of the fluid during the draining process and to present the results of the observed surface velocity of the liquid as a function of depth of fluid and its distance from the center of the vortex core. Many previous investigators of vortex behavior …

An Investigation Of Optimum Journal Bearings., Kulin Purshotam Maskai Jan 1963

An Investigation Of Optimum Journal Bearings., Kulin Purshotam Maskai

Masters Theses

"Not much has been done towards calculating the "Optimum Bearing" from the point of view of maximum load capacity or minimum friction. It has been found that there 1 is not much difference in the "Optimum Bearing" proportions, as calculated, considering either minimum friction or maximum load capacity

Journal bearings are commonly used and they play a very important role in reducing friction and wear. Engineers use past experience in choosing a bearing for the given conditions. A bearing design can be obtained if 'Optium Bearing' proportions are calculated as suggested by Kingsbury (1) in his article on 'Optium Conditions …

A Preliminary Study Of The Dielectric Properties Of Bismuth Ferrate Ceramics., John Joseph Schwaller Jan 1963

A Preliminary Study Of The Dielectric Properties Of Bismuth Ferrate Ceramics., John Joseph Schwaller

Masters Theses

"In this investigation some of the results of Fedulov18 for a composition of 30 percent lead titanate - 70 percent bismuth ferrate were verified. The system of lead zirconatebismuth ferrate was studied with sintering data determined for the series. By X-ray and microscopic analysis the system was determined to be not a solid solution. The dielectric measurements show a linear relation between the dielectric constant and the percent lead zirconate from 100 percent BiFeo3 to 10 percent BiFeo3 - 90 percent PbZro3"--Abstract, p. ii

Zinc Sulfide-Sulfate Reaction Pressures, William L. Hallerberg Jan 1963

Zinc Sulfide-Sulfate Reaction Pressures, William L. Hallerberg

Masters Theses

"A static manometric method was used to find the equilibrium reaction pressure as a function of temperature for the reaction:

11 ZnSO4 + ZnS → 4 (ZnO·2ZnSO4) + 4 SO2

From the reaction pressures, the standard free energy of the reaction was found to be:

ΔF⁰ = + 51,320 - 36.68 T

Using thermodynamic data for ZnSO4, ZnS and SO2 the standard free energy of formation of the basic salt ZnO·2ZnSO4 was found to be:

ΔF⁰ = - 377,000 - 65.9 T cal/mole

in the temperature range 350 to 420⁰ C.
