The Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop By The Functional Expansion Method, Hugh Francis Spence Jan 1968

The Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop By The Functional Expansion Method, Hugh Francis Spence

Masters Theses

"The time response of a generalized second order Phase-Locked Loop to step and ramp inputs is described by a functional power, truncated at the third order term. The responses given by the functional power series differs from the analog simulation by less than 6% when the inputs are below 2.0 rad (rad/sec)"--Abstract, page ii.

An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer Jan 1968

An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer

Masters Theses

"Originally this work was initiated to develope [sic] a method for measuring the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of metals. Due to the characteristics of the method and the equipment used, it was concluded that the technique is not suitable for materials of high conductivity. However, results show that the apparatus is valuable for the determination of the thermal diffusivity of relatively poor heat conductors. The favorable characteristics of the method are its rapidity and basic simplicity"--Abstract, page ii.

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon Jan 1968

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon

Masters Theses

"The equation E = [2 V] [over] [N 1n(4d/N] has been used for determining the electric field at the liquid tip in electrical spraying of liquids. Data were taken at the instant of spraying in an attempt to experimentally verify this equation. The results indicate that the value given by the equation needs to be increased by about 20% in the normal range of operation. A model for the spraying mechanism of the liquid is also proposed"--Abstract, page ii.

"The requirements of a descriptive language for automated digital computer design are presented. Y. Chu's Computer Design Language is then used to describe the logic of the SCC 650, a small general-purpose digital computer at UMR. Chu's language is found to be the best language available to the designer for both documentation and automatic translation into Boolean Equations"--Abstract, page ii.

An Ultrasonic Pulse Generator Using The Transducer As A Frequency Determining Element, Donald E. Watke Jan 1968

An Ultrasonic Pulse Generator Using The Transducer As A Frequency Determining Element, Donald E. Watke

Masters Theses

"This paper describes the development of a method of ultrasonic pulse generation in which the transducer determines the frequency of oscillation. A definite advantage of this method is the ability of the frequency of oscillation to change with changes in the transducer mechanical resonant frequency. This maintains peak efficiency at all times. The method is demonstrated in a small sonar transmitter but could be applied to any area involving driven ultrasonic transducers"--Abstract, page ii.

Effects Of Pressure On The Mechanical Properties Of Magnesium, Joseph George Hoeg Jan 1968

Effects Of Pressure On The Mechanical Properties Of Magnesium, Joseph George Hoeg

Masters Theses

"The data collected in an attempt to evaluate the pressure dependency of the mechanical properties of extruded AZ31B-F magnesium alloy are presented herein. This information was compiled from the results of compression tests run in hydraulic fluid environments pressurized to 50,000 psi, and tension tests run in the atmosphere. Specimen axial load and longitudinal strain were recorded and converted to effective stress and effective strain parameters for presentation. The term pressure is defined, in this report, as the negative average of the principal stresses or, essentially, the negative of the hydrostatic component of stress. The effective stress and strain, at …

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig Jan 1968

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig

Masters Theses

"It is an accepted fact that the simple Maxwell and Voigt models do not usually represent the behavior of real materials. In order to make the results of a model more realistic, other combinations of springs and dashpots must be considered. To understand the more complicated models, it is desirable to have a knowledge of the Maxwell model since this element usually occurs either in series or in parallel in the advanced models. This investigation reports solutions of the spherical wave equation in both the elastic and viscoelastic media. Laplace transform techniques are used to obtain the parameters; stress, velocity, …

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee Jan 1968

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee

Masters Theses

"The simulators described in this paper allow checkout of the electrical control circuitry of pyrotechnic and related devices where the actual testing of the devices would be destructive. A simulator is described that is superior to the units now available for test purposes. Solid state components are used exclusively and hence it is very light weight and reliable. It is portable and requires no external power for indication of the control circuitry performance. The simulator presents a load that is adjustable between one and five ohms for a controlled length of time from one to one hundred milliseconds. Transients will …

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Damage In Fe₃Al, Roland Otto Jackson Jan 1968

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Damage In Fe₃Al, Roland Otto Jackson

Masters Theses

"A computer program, designed to simulate the ordered state of the B.C.C. alloy, Fe₃Al, was used to study the effects of irradiation on an order-disorder alloy. Twenty-six runs were made with this program representing a variety of initial conditions. In all cases, the final damaged state consisted of Frenkel defects, vacancy-interstitial pairs; and the distance separating these pairs was a sensitive function of the energy and direction imparted to the primary knock-on. Both the vacancy and the interstitial were found to be normal, stable defects, with the interstitial residing in a "split"-configuration oriented in the [110] direction. The threshold energies …

Design Of A Sequential Detector, Scott William Abel Jan 1968

Design Of A Sequential Detector, Scott William Abel

Masters Theses

"The communication engineer has in the past treated the detection problem from a limited point of view. Detectors have been designed to reach a decision based on a specified number of samples. This approach has proved valuable, but it offers no provisions for an early decision if a conclusion becomes obvious early in the sampling. Neither is there an opportunity for additional sampling if necessary to reach a definite conclusion, because of these limitations it is desirable to find more general detectors. This study looks at a specific statistics (the sign test) and designs a sequential detector to utilize this …

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin Jan 1968

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin

Masters Theses

"Turbulent flow pressure drop measurements were made for solutions of aluminum dioleate (soap) in toluene at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 per cent. Tube diameters ranged in size from 0.01 to 2.0 inches. The results of these measurements differed from those observed in aqueous systems. Higher concentrations (at least 0.75 per cent) were required before drag reduction was observed. Although fresh solutions were somewhat sensitive to shearing, once a solution was over about two weeks old it showed little further mechanical degradation. Although in the toluene solutions, wall shear stresses were reached which were over an order of …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The micromorphology and type of segregation in vacuum-cast ingots of aluminum-uranium alloys, ranging from 5 to 30 weight percent, were studied. The microstructural characteristics are similar to those of aluminum-silicon alloys of the same composition range, except that the aluminum-uranium eutectic was identified as having "chevron" and "rhombic spiral" types of morphology. © 1968.

Interstitial Solute Trapping In Irradiated And Quenched Iron, M. (Manfred) Wuttig, J. T. Stanley, H. K. Birnbaum Jan 1968

Interstitial Solute Trapping In Irradiated And Quenched Iron, M. (Manfred) Wuttig, J. T. Stanley, H. K. Birnbaum

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interaction of interstitial carbon and nitrogen solutes with defects produced by low temperature neutron irradiation and by quenching was studied in high purity and Ferrovac E iron. Magnetic Dis accommodation techniques were applied to determine the interstitial solute content after irradiation and upon annealing. Doses of about 1017 neutrons/cm2 caused the trapping of about 20 ppm (atomic) interstitial solutes at 65 (carbon) and 40°C (nitrogen). Trapping of carbon in a Ferrovac E iron alloy occurred during a fast quench from 880°C. After trapping, the interstitial solutes reappeared in solid solution at 300 (carbon, neutron irradiation), 200 (nitrogen, neutron irradiation), …

Current Density-Anodic Potential Curves Of Single Crystal Gaas At Low Currents In Koh, Martin E. Straumanis, J. P. Krumme, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single p-type, GaAs crystals of high purity, Zn doped, were used to determine whether or not the inverse octahedral {111} faces show potential differences and various rates of anodic dissolution. The Ga{111}, As{111}, {110}, and {100} faces, were polished, etched, and etch-polished with concentrated H2SO4 + H2O2, and immersed in IN KOH. The Ga{111} faces were found to be the most noble with respect to rest and anodic dissolution potentials. The potential difference between the inverse {111} faces was as large as 0.14v for the rest and 0.123v for the dissolution potentials. The …

Investigation By Neutron Diffraction Utilizing White Neutron Radiation, Arlen Ray Schade Jan 1968

Investigation By Neutron Diffraction Utilizing White Neutron Radiation, Arlen Ray Schade

Doctoral Dissertations

"The most probable reactor core neutron velocity was determined by analysis of data obtained from single crystals of copper and lithium fluoride. Derivation of the relationship between the maximum in experimental count rate and the most probable velocity, an error analysis of the method, and the computer routine are given for the method used to obtain the most probable velocity. The most probable velocity was used to index the maxwellian distributions from polycrystalline materials. Investigations were done with white neutron radiation of various silicon steel samples of different preferred orientation. A method is described by which the preferred orientation of …

Doctoral Dissertations

"The circulating drop mass transport model based on Hadamard's dispersed phase stream function was solved numerically to account for a solute diffusing into a droplet and undergoing a first order irreversible reaction with the drop medium for the case where the continuous phase resistance to solute transport is negligible ... Experimental data were obtained for a system which consisted of 2-chloro-2-methylpropane (t-butyl chloride) diffusing from a benzene continuous phase into falling water droplets and undergoing a first order irreversible reaction with the water droplets ... The experimental solute transport rates were a factor of 7 to 10 greater than those …

Recombination Statistics For The Neutron-Induced Base Current Component, Ming-Chwan Chow Jan 1968

Recombination Statistics For The Neutron-Induced Base Current Component, Ming-Chwan Chow

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper presents a derivation of the recombination statistical model for the neutron-induced base current component. The derivation was based on the assumptions: 1) the current equation for the induced current component developed by Goben is valid; 2) the Shockley-Read-Hall statistics for holes and electrons are applicable; and 3) the recombination statistics derived by Sah, Noyce and Shockley, for sites in the bulk space-charge region are valid. Several examples were presented to emphasize accuracy of this derived model for predictions. This paper shows that the recombination process may be described by a mathematical model, recombination statistics which depend on the …

Surface Self-Diffusion On Nickel (111) By Radioactive Tracers, James Ronald Wolfe Jan 1968

Surface Self-Diffusion On Nickel (111) By Radioactive Tracers, James Ronald Wolfe

Doctoral Dissertations

"Surface self-diffusion coefficients have been measured by a radioactive tracer method over the temperature range 614⁰ to 840⁰C on nickel (111) surfaces characterized by LEED. Previously unrecognized tracer evaporation during surface diffusion resulted in restricted spreading of the tracer at higher temperatures. A theoretical treatment of the tracer evaporation phenomenon is presented and subsequently used in the analysis of the data. The temperature dependence of the surface self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) for nickel (111) can be represented, over the experimental temperature range, by a single Arrhenius type relationship...Arguments are presented to justify an adatom surface diffusion mechanism which is …

The Effect Of Polymer Structure On Drag Reduction In Nonpolar Solvents, Gin Chain Liaw Jan 1968

The Effect Of Polymer Structure On Drag Reduction In Nonpolar Solvents, Gin Chain Liaw

Doctoral Dissertations

"The effects of polymer chain flexibility, molecular weight and entanglement capacity, and of polymer solution concentration on drag reduction in nonpolar solvents were studied in this investigation. Three samples of polydimethyl siloxane in toluene, five samples of polyethylene oxide in benzene, two samples of cis-polyisoprene in toluene, trans-polyisoprene in toluene, cis-polybutadiene in toluene, ethyl cellulose in toluene and a copolymer of epichlorohydrin and polyethylene oxide in toluene were studied. Molecular weights of all polymers were estimated from intrinsic viscosity, except for the molecular weight of the copolymer which was given by the manufacturer. Turbulent and laminar flow pressure drop data …

Distributed Parameter Rc Network Analysis, Robert C. Peirson Jan 1968

Distributed Parameter Rc Network Analysis, Robert C. Peirson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Methods of analyzing uniform and tapered distribute [sic] parameter RC networks are reviewed and correlated in this dissertation. Multilayer networks and simple three layer networks are considered. Analogies between two-wire transmission line theory and multilayer distributed network theory are developed, i.e., standing wave and traveling wave concepts. An accurate computer-aided steady state analysis procedure is presented which has a solution accuracy that can be determined prior to actual analysis computations. The impulsive response of the uniform RC network is investigated with the goal of measuring the network's parameters. Procedures to determine the parameters R and C of a uniform RC …

Analysis Of A Focus Log Electrode In A Non Homogeneous Medium, John Julian Zenor Jan 1968

Analysis Of A Focus Log Electrode In A Non Homogeneous Medium, John Julian Zenor

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mathematical model presented for the focused logging system is applicable to any resistance logging tool of the electrode type. Horizontal or cylindrical resistance interfaces may be included in any combinations. The tool and its environment are compartmentalized, and the integral form of the condition for continuity of current is applied to each compartment. Acceleration methods are applied to the iterative solution of the resulting large-scale system of linear equations. Two specific models are presented, one for the study of the effects of invasion and the other for the study of the effects of bed thickness on the apparent resistivity …

Nonparametric Sequential Detection, James Charles Fowler Jan 1968

Nonparametric Sequential Detection, James Charles Fowler

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation extends the theory of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U statistic so that this statistic can be used to perform sequential tests on hypotheses. This sequential test procedure makes use of a sequential ranking procedure similar to the one first introduced by Parent. The operating-characteristic function and average number of samples function for this new test are calculated as a function of the signal to noise ratio. The test is then shown to be efficient for several forms of alternatives with an efficiency of 95% against the Wald Sequential Probability Ratio Test for a constant signal in normal noise. Finally, the …

Effect Of Micelles On Flotation Of Metal Ions, Uriel Michael Oko Jan 1968

Effect Of Micelles On Flotation Of Metal Ions, Uriel Michael Oko

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and the dependency of the adsorption of divalent metal counterions such as copper and zinc at the air-water interface on its concentration in the solution, was undertaken in order to better understand the process of ion flotation. The study is divided into two broad categories, the first of which consists of the evaluation of the extent of aggregation of the surfactant molecules into micelles, and the effect of the divalent metal counterion concentration on this aggregation and on the critical concentration at which micelles start forming (cmc). This was accomplished …

A Study Of The Anodic Oxidation Of Ethylene On Gold And Gold-Platinum Alloys, San-Cheng Lai Jan 1968

A Study Of The Anodic Oxidation Of Ethylene On Gold And Gold-Platinum Alloys, San-Cheng Lai

Doctoral Dissertations

"The distinctive features of electrochemical energy conversion is the direct conversion of the chemical energy of a reaction into electrical energy without going through the intermediary of heat, thereby avoiding the Carnot limitation. Since it is theoretically possible to obtain electrical energy to the extent of the free energy change of the chemical reaction, the overall thermal efficiencies expected are nearly 100 percent. However, the observed efficiencies of most electrochemical energy converters are considerably lower than this due to a slowness of one or more of the intermediate steps of the overall reaction. There has been a recent surge of …

A Numerical Simulation Of Pressure Distribution And Radius Of Drainage In Infinite Radial Aquifers - Constant Rate Case, Alton John Nute Jan 1968

A Numerical Simulation Of Pressure Distribution And Radius Of Drainage In Infinite Radial Aquifers - Constant Rate Case, Alton John Nute

Doctoral Dissertations

"The diffusivity equation for the transient flow of slightly-compressible liquids has been solved for infinite radial aquifers, subject to constant terminal rates, by employing a Romberg integration of the Van Everdingen - Hurst explicitly solution over the transformed integral limits for .01̲TD>500, the classical solutions presented by Carslaw and Jaeger, Mortada, Theis, and others are incorporated in the digital analysis to yield dimensionless pressures for 40 selected dimensionless radius (RD) ratios between 1 and 64 for dimensionless time values of .0005 to 1000.0. A new expression for dimensionless pressure-distribution, PD'(RD, TD), as a fraction of well bore pressure drop …

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore Jan 1968

Signal Theoretic Characterization Of A Function Using Positive Exponential Basis Functions, James Julius Baremore

Doctoral Dissertations

"A signal theory characterization of a time function or signal is a representation of the function throughout a sample interval by an orthogonal basis function expansion. The characterization described here obtains the coefficients in the expansion by processing the input waveform, in real time, through a system of three terminal passive RC filters. The outputs of the filters are sampled periodically and the coefficients of the basis function expansion in that interval are related to these values. The basis functions result from an exponential transformation applied to the Legendre polynomials and are orthogonal in time over the sample interval. The …

Optical Reflectance Spectra Of Chromium (Iii) In Mgo-Ss, Thomas Spencer Montgomery Jan 1968

Optical Reflectance Spectra Of Chromium (Iii) In Mgo-Ss, Thomas Spencer Montgomery

Doctoral Dissertations

"The valence state and coordination site of the transition-metal ion, chromium, was investigated in a MgO host lattice. The chromium ion incorporated into poly-crystalline MgO by quenching from elevated temperatures allowed investigation of a single crystalline phase, MgO-solid solution (ss). The chromium ion was confirmed to occur in the trivalent state and to occupy octahedral cation sites in the MgO lattice by the use of optical reflectance spectroscopy. The effect of the concentration of the chromium ion on the crystal field splitting energy, 10 Dq, permitted analysis over a range of Dq/B values. In conjunction, MgO-ss lattice parameters examined as …

Multiport Synthesis With Multi-Layered Distributed Parameter Rc Networks, Walter Ronald Koenig Jan 1968

Multiport Synthesis With Multi-Layered Distributed Parameter Rc Networks, Walter Ronald Koenig

Doctoral Dissertations

"Synthesis and design techniques for multiport, multilayered, distributed parameter RC networks are investigated in this dissertation. The basic building block is a network section of uniform width consisting of alternate layers of resistive and dielectric materials on top of a perfectly conducting plane. The resulting network is composed of a cascade of these sections with all access terminals at one end of the cascaded network. The terminals at the other end are either open circuited or short circuited. A method is discussed for synthesizing a network from a prescribed network admittance matrix. An approximation technique is given for obtaining a …

Decomposition Of Cr(Oh)₃ To Form Active Cr₂C₃, Timothy A. Clancy Jan 1968

Decomposition Of Cr(Oh)₃ To Form Active Cr₂C₃, Timothy A. Clancy

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study was concerned with the sinterability of Cr₂C₃ powders produced by the calcination of a Cr(OH)₃ gel. The decomposition of the gel was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray analysis and microscopic examination. Comparison was made between the size of crystallites as determined by X-ray line broadening and the size of aggregated particles as determined by independent means. These lineal measurements were compared to surface area measurements on the calcined powders. The degree of sinterability was judged from the density measurements on Cr₂C₃ pellets fired under air, oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres. Energies of activation of 25 and 20 kilocalories per …
