Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Aircraft Control, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen Jan 1995

Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Aircraft Control, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aircraft designs are becoming more complex in order to either operate more efficiently as in the commercial sector or to push the performance envelopes as in the military sector. An interesting outcome of this scenario is that `control'' has come to play an important role in helping realize these objectives. Increasingly, control is becoming an integral part of an aircraft design rather than an afterthought. More effective and efficient control of an aircraft is certain to lead to improved performance at a lower cost

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

I DDQ (Defect Detection by Quiescent power supply current measurement), or current testing, has emerged in the last few years as an effective technique for detecting certain classes of faults in high-density ICs. In this paper, a testable design that enhances the I DDQ testability of static random access memories (SRAMs) for off-line testing as proposed. To achieve high accuracy and a test speed approaching the system operational speed, the memory is partitioned for comparison of I DDQ values. Parallel write/read operations are used to activate possible faults, while quiescent power supply currents from two blocks are compared

Immittance Response Of La0.6sr0.4co0.2fe0.8o3 Based Electrochemical Cells, C. C. Chen, M. M. Nasrallah, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ac small-signal response of La0.6Sr0.4CO02Feo.803 (LSCF) is examined via lumped parameter/complex plane analysis (LP/CPA) technique. The ac data, acquired in the frequency range lO-1≤F≤106Hz, are used to establish the role of ionic contribution in the LSCF material system using a two-terminal blocking electrode method. Spun-on yttria (8 mole percent (m/o) Y203) stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) or Ce0.85Sm0.15O2 (CSO) thin film coatings (0.3 - 1.0 µm) is used as electron blocking electrodes. The temperature dependence of the contributing elements between the terminals, obtained via LP/CPA technique and dc measurements, is evaluated. The activation energy, associated with possible oxygen transport via an …

Semiempirical Model For The Electrical Properties Of La1-Xcaxcoo3, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A semiempirical model of the Seebeck coefficient for a small polaron hopping conductor is presented. The population of small polarons is allowed to change as a function of temperature via the mechanism of charge disproportionation. The energy required for polaron formation by the disproportionation mechanism is modeled as screened by a Coulomb interaction with nearby small polarons. The charge carrier site occupancies generated by the model are used to successfully predict the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient for compositions in the La1-xCaxCoO3 system. Cobalt ion valence populations predicted by the model are used to calculate effective paramagnetic moments for LaCoO3, …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Crystal structure, thermal expansion, thermogravimetry, thermoelectricity, and electrical conductivity of compositions in the system La0.8Sr0.2Co1-yFeyO3 with 0 ≤ y ≤ 1 were studied as function of Co Fe ratio and temperature, in air. The electrical conduction mechanism is attributed to the adiabatic-hopping of p-type small polarons. At high temperatures, oxygen deficiency causes lattice expansion and a reduction in electrical conductivity. The observed temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is attributed to changes in carrier concentration caused by a thermally excited charge disproportionation of Co3+ ions and by the ionic compensation of induced oxygen vacancies. The measured electrical conductivity and Seebeck …

Crystal structure, thermal expansion, oxygen stoichiometry, thermoelectricity, and electrical conductivity of compositions in the system La1 - xSrxCo0.2Fe0.8O3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 were studied as function of temperature and Sr content, in air. The solubility of Sr in the sintered perovskite-type oxide (ABO3) was limited to x ≤ 0.4. The observed p-type electrical conduction appeared to occur via a small-polaron hopping mechanism. The thermally induced oxygen loss caused a lattice expansion plus decreases in both the carrier concentration and the carrier mobility. A semi-empirical model was developed which takes into account the thermally activated disproportionation of Co3+ ions …

The Performance Of Reed-Solomon Codes On A Bursty-Noise Channel, William J. Ebel, William H. Tranter Jan 1995

The Performance Of Reed-Solomon Codes On A Bursty-Noise Channel, William J. Ebel, William H. Tranter

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of a Reed-Solomon coded binary communication system on a bursty-noise channel is considered. Bursty noise is defined to be background Gaussian noise plus burst noise, where burst noise is defined to be a series of finite-duration Gaussian-noise pulses with fixed duration and Poisson occurrence times. Using the noise model, along with ideal symbol interleaving, decoded bit-error probability bounds are derived for the case where the noise bursts are long with respect to the channel symbol rate. Specific performance results are presented for the (31,15,8) Reed-Solomon Joint Tactical Distribution System (JTIDS) code with a Binary Phase Shift Keyed (BPSK) …

The Influence Of Pcl 3 On Planarisation And Selectivity Of Inp Regrowth By Atmospheric Pressure Movpe, M. J. Harlow, P. C. Spurdens, Randy Hays Moss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The introduction of phosphorus trichloride into the AP-MOVPE growth of InP has been found to dramatically improve the regrowth adjacent to mesa structures. By suppressing growth in the [100] direction and enhancing growth in the [311] directions planar regrowth is achieved. Polycrystalline deposits on dielectric masks can also be completely suppressed

A Neural Network Thrust Force Controller To Minimize Delamination During Drilling In Graphite Epoxy Laminates, Robert B. Stone Jan 1995

A Neural Network Thrust Force Controller To Minimize Delamination During Drilling In Graphite Epoxy Laminates, Robert B. Stone

Masters Theses

"Delamination is a well-recognized problem associated with drilling in fiber-reinforced composite materials (FRCM). The most noted problems occur as the drill enters and exits the FRCM. Since drilling is often a final operation during assembly, any defects introduced in parts by drilling represent an expensive loss. Studies based on linear elastic fracture mechanics theory have proposed critical thrust forces in the various drilling regions that will prevent crack growth or delamination. Using these critical thrust force curves as a guide, a thrust force controller was developed to minimize the delamination while drilling in graphite epoxy laminates. A neural network control …

Conservative Thirty Calendar Day Stock Prediction Using A Probabilistic Neural Network, H. Tan, Donald C. Wunsch, Danil V. Prokhorov Jan 1995

Conservative Thirty Calendar Day Stock Prediction Using A Probabilistic Neural Network, H. Tan, Donald C. Wunsch, Danil V. Prokhorov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe a system that predicts significant short-term price movement in a single stock utilizing conservative strategies. We use preprocessing techniques, then train a probabilistic neural network to predict only price gains large enough to create a significant profit opportunity. Our primary objective is to limit false predictions (known in the pattern recognition literature as false alarms). False alarms are more significant than missed opportunities, because false alarms acted upon lead to losses. We can achieve false alarm rates as low as 5.7% with the correct system design and parameterization.

Electrical And Thermal Transport Properties Of (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3, Rasit Koc, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1995

Electrical And Thermal Transport Properties Of (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3, Rasit Koc, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC electrical conductivity and Seebeck data as functions of temperature and oxygen activity were used to explain the electrical and thermal transport properties of (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3. The electrical conductivity data of La (Cr,Co)O3 suggested that it depends upon Co content. At Co concentrations less than 20 mol%, Co acted as traps for the carriers and decreased the electrical conductivity of the compositions at temperatures less than 900 °C. As the Co concentration increased to above 20 mol%, electrical conductivity increased significantly due to a connecting path of available Co sites. Additional Ca substitution for La increased the electrical conductivity in …

Static And Dynamic Characteristics Of Spot Welded Sheet Metal Beams, K. Pal, Don L. Cronin Jan 1995

Static And Dynamic Characteristics Of Spot Welded Sheet Metal Beams, K. Pal, Don L. Cronin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although widely employed as structural components in the auto industry, spot welded sheet metal beams manifest static and dynamic behavior that is not well characterized. For the present study, sample beams of three representative cross-sections—hat, box and box with partition—were fabricated of sheet steel. The spacing between the spot welds that hold these sections together was varied from 25.4 mm (1 in.) to 203.2 mm (8 in.) using a 25.4 mm (1 in.) increment. The beams were subjected to static bending and static torsion tests, and bending and torsional stiffnesses were determined as functions of spot weld spacing. The beams …

Improved Finite Element Modeling Of The Turbofan Engine Inlet Radiation Problem, I. Danda Roy, Walter Eversman Jan 1995

Improved Finite Element Modeling Of The Turbofan Engine Inlet Radiation Problem, I. Danda Roy, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Improvements have been made in the finite element model of the acoustic radiated field from a turbofan engine inlet in the presence of a mean flow. The problem of acoustic radiation from a turbofan engine inlet is difficult to model numerically because of the large domain and high frequencies involved. A numerical model with conventional finite elements in the near field and wave envelope elements in the far field has been constructed. By employing an irrotational mean flow assumption, both the mean flow and the acoustic perturbation problem have been posed in an axisymmetric formulation in terms of the velocity …

A New Neural Architecture For Homing Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega Jan 1995

A New Neural Architecture For Homing Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a new neural architecture which imbeds dynamic programming solutions to solve optimal target-intercept problems. They provide feedback guidance solutions, which are optimal with any initial conditions and time-to-go, for a 2D scenario. The method discussed in this study determines an optimal control law for a system by successively adapting two networks - an action and a critic network. This method determines the control law for an entire range of initial conditions; it simultaneously determines and adapts the neural networks to the optimal control policy for both linear and nonlinear systems. In addition, it is important to know that …

Vortex Lattice Symmetry And Electronic Structure In Yba2cu3o7, Bernhard Keimer, Wan Y. Shih, Ross W. Erwin, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Fatih Dogan, Ilhan A. Aksay Dec 1994

Vortex Lattice Symmetry And Electronic Structure In Yba2cu3o7, Bernhard Keimer, Wan Y. Shih, Ross W. Erwin, Jeffrey W. Lynn, Fatih Dogan, Ilhan A. Aksay

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a small angle neutron scattering study of the vortex lattice in YBa2Cu3O7 in magnetic fields of 0.5≤ H ≤5 T applied along and close to the c axis. Over the entire field range, the vortices form an oblique lattice with two nearly equal lattice constants and an angle of 73° between primitive vectors. Numerical calculations suggest that variations of the superconducting order parameter near the vortex core are important in stabilizing this structure. An analysis that accounts for the fourfold symmetry of the vortex core qualitatively explains both the symmetry and the orientation …

A New Approach To Automatic Target Recognition Using Wavelet Transforms, Anitha Panapakkam, S. N. Balakrishnan, Daniel St. Clair

Computer Science Technical Reports

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) systems have significant impact in defense applications. There is a continuing need to develop new and robust techniques to handle the increasingly complex ATR problem. The objectives of this thesis are two-fold. First a new technique to be used for ATR is developed and secondly an integrated ATR system to investigate and combine all subsystems is developed. In this thesis, we have developed a new technique for the feature extraction stage of ATR problem using wavelet transforms. Wavelet transforms have been one of the widely investigated areas of research in the past few years. The promising …

A Contactless Method For Measuring The Bulk Resistance Of Ii-Vi Compound Semiconductors, Edward D. Wheeler, Jack L. Boone, James L. Drewniak Dec 1994

A Contactless Method For Measuring The Bulk Resistance Of Ii-Vi Compound Semiconductors, Edward D. Wheeler, Jack L. Boone, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A radio frequency measurement technique for measuring the bulk resistivity of II-VI compound semiconductors is described. Wafers of n-type CdS are used to demonstrate the technique. An equivalent circuit model is introduced which predicts a frequency dependence for the CdS wafer impedance which agrees well with the experiment. The model assumes a broad distribution of relaxation times associated with the polarization. The radio frequency method gives values for the resistivity within 15% of four point probe measurements for the lower resistivity wafers, and within 5% for the higher resistivity wafers.

Identification And Robust Control Of Smart Structures Using Artificial Neural Networks, R. Damle, R. Lashlee, Vittal S. Rao, Frank J. Kern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes an integrated approach to design and implement robust controllers for smart structures. To demonstrate this procedure, we have designed and fabricated a structural test article incorporating shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, strain gauge sensors, signal-processing circuits and digital controllers with flexible structures. A neural-network-based structural identification method to determine a state space model of the system from its experimental input/output data is presented. To reduce the learning time required to train a neural network significantly, we have developed an accelerated adaptive learning-rate algorithm. The mathematical model derived using neural networks is compared with models obtained by more …

Method Of Manufacture Of Multiple-Element Piezoelectric Transducer, Lawrence J. Busse, Jeffry W. Stevenson, Wayne Huebner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved method for fabrication of a multiple-element piezoelectric transducer and the transducer produced thereby. A green precursor tape is produced by doctor-blade tape-casting of a slurry containing lead zirconate-titanate (PZT) powder. After drying, individual strips of the tape are stacked between flat plates of previously sintered PZT, and sintered to form PZT strips; Pb from the previously sintered PZT plates makes up any Pb lost from the surfaces of the tape strips during sintering. The PZT strips are stacked interposed by layers of a thermoplastic polymer, and heated to a temperature above the melting point of the polymer, forming …

Performance Of Bandlimited Gaussian Noise As A Spreading Code In Awgn And Single Tone Interference Channels, Tze-Yu Chu, Kurt Louis Kosbar Nov 1994

Performance Of Bandlimited Gaussian Noise As A Spreading Code In Awgn And Single Tone Interference Channels, Tze-Yu Chu, Kurt Louis Kosbar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper examines the bit error rate (BER) of a direct sequence spread spectrum (SS) system that uses bandlimited white Gaussian noise (BLWGN) as a spreading code. The performance of this "bandlimited-SS" system is examined in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and single tone jamming environments. The BLWGN spreading code is inferior to conventional codes in AWGN channels, but is more robust when a narrow band interference signal is present.

Correlative Tracking Of Pseudo-Noise Codes Using A Phase Shifted Reference, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Hettiachchi Upul Gunawardana Nov 1994

Correlative Tracking Of Pseudo-Noise Codes Using A Phase Shifted Reference, Kurt Louis Kosbar, Hettiachchi Upul Gunawardana

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work investigates a first-order correlation loop for tracking pseudo-noise (PN) codes. The local reference is produced by a PN sequence generator in series with a Hilbert transform filter. The tracking performance of this non-linear loop is compared with conventional early-late delay-lock loops (ELDLL). Using a conservative definition of bandwidth, the new loop was found to be superior at moderate to low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Another advantage of the new structure is that it has a very large (arguably infinite) lock range.

Two-Dimensional Current Transient And Trap-State Filling Of Amorphous Silicon Thin-Film Transistors, J. S. Huang, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Nov 1994

Two-Dimensional Current Transient And Trap-State Filling Of Amorphous Silicon Thin-Film Transistors, J. S. Huang, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two-dimensional simulations of amorphous silicon thin-film transistors are presented for the case when source-drain voltage is turned on long before gate voltage is turned on. Discrepancies between these results and the one-dimensional results of M. F. Willums, M. Hack, P. G. LeComber, and J. G. Shaw [MRS Symp. Proc. 258, 985 (1992)] are discussed. Valid reasons for drain current decay are provided, and occupation dynamics for the trap states are shown in order to distinguish these from the one-dimensional results of C. van Berkel, J. R. Hughes, and M. J. Powell [J. Appl. Phys. 66, 4488 (1989)] where …
