Local Bond-Slip Relationship For Frp Reinforcement In Concrete, Francesco Focacci, Antonio Nanni, Charles E. Bakis

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The objective of this paper is to define a rigorous numerical method to calibrate parameters of a given local bond-slip relationship using experimental results of pullout tests, taking into account the distribution of the slip and bond shear stress throughout the bar. The proposed method involves finding parameters of a given bond-slip relationship, such that results of pullout tests can be predicted in terms of applied pullout force and consequent slip at the loaded end and slip at the free end. The method is applied to some experimental data, and the results are discussed. For the application of the proposed …

Emi From Cavity Modes Of Shielding Enclosures-Fdtd Modeling And Measurements, Min Li, Joe Nuebel, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from slots and apertures resulting from coupling of interior sources through enclosure cavity modes in a rectangular test enclosure is reported herein. EMI from a specially designed test enclosure with slots or apertures excited by interior sources was studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. The measurements and FDTD modeling agree well. The results indicate that radiation at cavity mode resonances through slots and apertures of nonresonant dimensions can be as significant as the radiation at aperture or slot resonances. The agreement between the FDTD modeling and measurements demonstrates the usefulness of FDTD for investigating aspects …

Microwave Near-Field Reflection Property Analysis Of Concrete For Material Content Determination, Karl Joseph Bois, Aaron D. Benally, R. Zoughi Feb 2000

Microwave Near-Field Reflection Property Analysis Of Concrete For Material Content Determination, Karl Joseph Bois, Aaron D. Benally, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the most important parameters associated with concrete is its compressive strength. Currently, there is no reliable nondestructive testing technique that is capable of robust determination of this parameter. Concrete is a heterogeneous mixture composed of water, cement powder, sand (fine aggregate), rocks of various size or grade (coarse aggregate), and air (porosity). Water and cement powder chemically combine into a cement paste binder which, in due curing time (28 days), produces concrete with its specified compressive strength. Compressive strength of concrete is strongly influenced by its water-to-cement (w/c) ratio as well as its coarse aggregate-to-cement (ca/c) ratio. Therefore, …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This investigates the effects of the addition of Na and F ions to a glass ionomer cement in which those ions are not inherently present on its interactions with dilute (0.2%) NaF solution. Both the effect of the solution on the cement's surface morphology and the effect of the cement on the solution in terms of take up of Na+ and F- and of change in pH are to be investigated. These results are to be compared to previous results obtained with glasses which contained both, one, or neither of the ions as components of their glasses. NaF …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete technology has continued to advance throughout the years to meet the demands of designers and innovative structural systems. With the advent of high-performance concrete (HPC), which contains large amounts of cementitious materials, the investigation of the impact of concrete temperature development during hydration on concrete performance is of keen interest. Match-curing technology was used to investigate the influence of concrete temperature development during hydration on the mechanical and material property performance of prestressed and precast HPC beams. These members were fabricated for use in two recently constructed HPC bridges in Texas. The investigation was conducted in conjunction with the …

Upgrading Missouri Transportation Infrastructure: Solid Reinforced-Concrete Decks Strengthened With Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Systems, T. Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni, R. Mayo

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

More than 40 percent of the bridges in the United States need repair, strengthening, or replacement. Because of limited funds, many states are forced to post load restrictions on their bridges as a temporary measure. Recently, fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have emerged as a practical solution for repair or strengthening of highway bridges. Since there are no nationally accepted specifications for design and construction with bonded FRP reinforcement, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has funded a research program aimed at validating the design and analysis procedure through strengthening and testing to failure of bridges under realistic highway loading and conditions. …

Large Machine-Part Family Formation Utilizing A Parallel Art1 Neural Network, David Lee Enke, Kanchitpol Ratanapan, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The binary adaptive resonance (ART1) neural network algorithm has been successfully implemented in the past for the classifying and grouping of similar vectors from a machine-part matrix. A modified ART1 paradigm which reorders the input vectors, along with a modified procedure for storing a group's representation vectors, has proven successful in both speed and functionality in comparison to former technique. This paradigm has been adapted and implemented on a neurocomputer utilizing 256 processors which allows the computer to take advantage of the inherent parallelism of the ART1 algorithm. The parallel implementation results in tremendous improvements in the speed of the …

Monaural Cue Sound Localizer, John G. Harris, Chiang Jung Pu, Jose C. Principe Jan 2000

Monaural Cue Sound Localizer, John G. Harris, Chiang Jung Pu, Jose C. Principe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We describe the first single microphone sound localization system and its inspiration from theories of human monaural sound localization. Reflections and diffractions caused by the external ear (pinna) allow humans to estimate sound source elevations using only one ear. Our single microphone localization model relies on a specially shaped reflecting structure that serves the role of the pinna. Specially designed analog VLSI circuitry uses echo-time processing to localize the sound. A CMOS integrated circuit has been designed, fabricated, and successfully demonstrated on actual sounds.

Effects Of Cosolvents And Ph On Protein Adsorption On Polystyrene Latex: A Dynamic Light Scattering Study, Da Song, Daniel Forciniti Jan 2000

Effects Of Cosolvents And Ph On Protein Adsorption On Polystyrene Latex: A Dynamic Light Scattering Study, Da Song, Daniel Forciniti

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamic light scattering was used to study the adsorption of two proteins with different surface properties (IgG and HSA) on negatively charged polystyrene latex. The proteins were adsorbed from water and from water/methanol and water/glycerol mixtures at various pH. Some striking differences between the adsorption behaviors of the proteins were observed. Whereas the thickness of the adsorbed layer of HSA was extremely sensitive to pH and solvent composition, that of IgG was not. IgG mainly showed an end-on orientation on polystyrene whereas several different surface orientations are suggested for HSA under different conditions. The addition of methanol inhibited the adsorption …

Dynamics Of Interfacial Polymers In Composites, Frank D. Blum, Wuu-Yung Lin Jan 2000

Dynamics Of Interfacial Polymers In Composites, Frank D. Blum, Wuu-Yung Lin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Much experimental and theoretical work has been done on the behavior of adsorbed polymers. However, not much work has focused on the dynamics, especially segmental dynamics, of the adsorbed polymers. This is especially true of filled polymer or composite systems as the interfacial layers in these systems are difficult to study with most techniques. NMR is not restricted to use in optically clear samples and its use in the characterization in the surface polymers has been reviewed. In our laboratory, we have found that deuterium NMR could be used to probe the segmental dynamics of adsorbed polymers. The position of …

A Neural Network Methodology For Path Planning And Coordination Of Car-Like Robots, Prasanna Venkatesan Sadagopan Jan 2000

A Neural Network Methodology For Path Planning And Coordination Of Car-Like Robots, Prasanna Venkatesan Sadagopan

Masters Theses

"A car-like indoor mobile robot is a kinematically constrained robot that can be modeled as a 2D object translating and rotating in the horizontal plane among well- defined obstacles. The kinematic constraints impose that the linear velocity of the robot is along its main axis (no sideways motion is possible) and restrict the range of admissible values for the steering angle. The goal of this study is to combine neural network techniques and motion planning algorithms to create a new methodology for coordinating the motion of multiple car-like robots avoiding collision with polygonal obstacles in a work environment. An incremental …

Influence Of Gas Flow Rate On Oxygen Flux Measurements For Dense Oxygen Conducting Ceramic Membranes, W. T. Stephens, T. J. Mazanec, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 2000

Influence Of Gas Flow Rate On Oxygen Flux Measurements For Dense Oxygen Conducting Ceramic Membranes, W. T. Stephens, T. J. Mazanec, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxygen transport through a dense oxygen conducting ceramic membrane is driven by an oxygen activity gradient imposed by the gas streams on either side of the membrane. The oxygen activity on each side of the membrane is altered as oxygen is transported across the membrane. Thus, the oxygen activity gradient will not be the same in each region of a membrane and will generate a different oxygen flux. This interaction between the oxygen gradient and the oxygen flux can produce a lower average oxygen flux across the membrane, can mask differences between materials, and can explain the dependence of oxygen …

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller Jan 2000

A Schooling On Their Implications For Software Engineering [Trends], Ann K. Miller

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A discussion is presented on trends in software engineering. This can be done by simply extrapolating some of the popular, current trends. And, in fact, we examine a few of these obvious indicators. However, software engineering has had new approaches that are more revolutionary than evolutionary. In particular, we try to discern trends in software engineering based on trends in delivered software systems.

Infinite Time Optimal Neuro Control For Distributed Parameter Systems, S. N. Balakrishnan, Radhakant Padhi Jan 2000

Infinite Time Optimal Neuro Control For Distributed Parameter Systems, S. N. Balakrishnan, Radhakant Padhi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The conventional dynamic programming methodology for the solution of optimal control, despite having many desirable features, is severely restricted by its computational requirements. However, in recent times, an alternate formulation, known as the adaptive-critic synthesis, has given it a new perspective. In this paper, we have attempted to use the philosophy of adaptive-critic design to the optimal control of distributed parameter systems. An important contribution of this study is the derivation of the necessary conditions of optimality for distributed parameter systems, described in discrete domain, following the principle of approximate dynamic programming. Then the derived necessary conditions of optimality are …

Comparison Of A Heuristic Dynamic Programming And A Dual Heuristic Programming Based Adaptive Critics Neurocontroller For A Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of a neurocontroller for a turbogenerator that augments/replaces the conventional automatic voltage regulator and the turbine governor. The neurocontroller uses a novel technique based on the adaptive critic designs with emphasis on heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) and dual heuristic programming (DHP). Results are presented to show that the DHP based neurocontroller is robust and performs better than the HDP based neurocontroller, as well as the conventional controller, especially when the system conditions and configuration changes.

Decentralized Online Neuro-Identification Of Turbogenerators In A Multi-Machine Power System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2000

Decentralized Online Neuro-Identification Of Turbogenerators In A Multi-Machine Power System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a new and a novel technique based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for nonlinear model of turbogenerators in a multi-machine power system. Only local measurements are required by each ANN in this new method, and hence it is called decentralized neuro-identificiation. Each turbogenerator in the power system is quipped with an ANN which is able to identify (or model) its particular turbogenerator from moment to moment This information can then be used by a second ANN at each generator to enable effective control of the nonlinear non-stationary process under all operating conditions. Simulation results are presented in …

Spontaneous deposition of copper seed layers from metal bearing organic based solutions onto sputter deposited titanium, titanium nitride, and tantalum diffusion barrier thin films has been demonstrated. Based on electrochemically driven cementation exchange reactions, the process was used to produce adherent, selectively deposited copper metal particulate films on blanket and patterned barrier metal thin films on silicon substrates. The organic solution deposited copper films were capable of acting as seed layers for subsequent electrolytic and electroless copper deposition processes using standard plating baths. Electroless and electrolytic copper films from 0.1μm to 1.0μm thick were produced on a variety of samples …
