Inherently Safer Analysis Of The Attainable Region Process For The Adiabatic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide, Neil L. Book, Venkata U.B. Challagulla Jul 2000

Inherently Safer Analysis Of The Attainable Region Process For The Adiabatic Oxidation Of Sulfur Dioxide, Neil L. Book, Venkata U.B. Challagulla

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The attainable region (AR) method is used to obtain the optimal design and operating conditions for the adiabatic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide. The optimum process layout for this exothermic, catalytic, reversible reaction is a complex interconnection of reactors that achieves a conversion in excess of the equilibrium value for a single adiabatic reactor. The complex design obtained from the AR method is technically and economically superior to a single adiabatic reactor, but it is inferior from a safety perspective as a result of its complex interconnections and its high preheat temperature. The strategies of inherently safer design …

Effects Of Solvent Mixtures On Dispersion Of Lanthanum-Modified Lead Zirconate Titanate Tape Casting Slurries, Jian-Huei Feng, Fatih Dogan Jul 2000

Effects Of Solvent Mixtures On Dispersion Of Lanthanum-Modified Lead Zirconate Titanate Tape Casting Slurries, Jian-Huei Feng, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of xylenes/ethanol solvent mixtures on lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) nonaqueous suspensions were investigated by measuring sediment height, viscosity, and adsorption of dispersant. Well-dispersed colloidal suspensions were obtained in xylene-rich solvents with a minimum amount of menhaden fish oil as a dispersant. It was also shown that adsorption of dispersant on particle surfaces strongly depends on selection of solvent(s). The ratio of solvent mixture affects PLZT solids content of unfired tapes, in which using insufficient as well as excess dispersant could decrease the packing density of particles. Solubility of other organic additives, such as binder, was also considered …

High Energy Density Dielectrics For Symmetric Blumleins, Wayne Huebner, Shi C. Zhang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multilayer, tape cast ceramics are being developed for use in large area, high voltage devices in order to achieve high specific energy densities (>106 J/m3) and physical size reduction. In particular, symmetric Blumleins are desired with the following properties:

  • High voltage hold off (≥ 300 kV)
  • High, nondispersive permittivity: ≈100 to 900
  • Ability to be fabricated into various shapes and sizes
  • Surface flashover inhibition at the edge
  • Ability to be triggered by surface flashover switching

The compositions being pursued are based on pure BaTiO3 dielectrics. Our approach is to add glass phase additions which result …

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow Jul 2000

An Improved Statcom Model For Power Flow Analysis, Zhiping Yang, Chen Shen, Lingli Zhang, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The StatCom is traditionally modeled for power flow analysis as a PV or PQ bus depending on its primary application. The active power is either set to zero (neglecting the StatCom losses) or calculated iteratively. The StatCom voltage and reactive power compensation are usually related through the magnetics of the StatCom. This traditional power flow model of the StatCom neglects the impact of the high-frequency effects and the switching characteristics of the power electronics on the active power losses and the reactive power injection (absorption). In this paper, the authors propose a new StatCom model appropriate for power flow analysis …

Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou Jun 2000

Calibration Of Optical Digital Fragmentation Measuring Systems, Norbert H. Maerz, Wei Zhou

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optical granulometry systems like WipFrag are required to measure fragments in situ. That is to say, the fragments are in piles where sorting takes place, where fragments are partially overlapped, and where fines may not be seen because they fall in and behind the coarser fragments, or where the fines are simply too small to be seen. As a result, optical systems tend typically to overestimate the size of the distribution, and underestimate the variability of the distribution. The wider the size distribution being measured, the more severe the problem is. This paper presents the results of a study that …

Effects Of Ozone/Hydrogen Peroxide Pretreatment On Aerobic Biodegradability Of Nonionic Surfactants And Polypropylene Glycol, Mehmet Kitis, Craig D. Adams, John Kuzhikannil, Glen T. Daigger

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies were conducted which used the ozone/hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2) advanced oxidation process to pretreat three classes of compounds prior to aerobic biological treatment. The study compounds included ethylene oxide/propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymers, polypropylene glycols (PPGs), linear secondary alcoholethoxylates (LSAES), and alkylphenolethoxylates (APEs). After preoxidation with ozone and hydrogen peroxide (added at their stoichiometric ratio), 300 mg/L as COD samples were bioassayed in aerobic batch bioassays with a mixed liquor suspended solids concentration of 1500 mg/L. It was found that unoxidized polypropylated compounds (EO/PO block copolymers and PPGs) and LSAEs tended to be biorecalcitrant, …

Improving Shear Capacity Of Existing Rc T-Section Beams Using Cfrp Composites, Ahmed Khalifa, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with T-section. Different configurations of externally bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets were used to strengthen the specimens in shear. The experimental program consisted of six full-scale, simply supported beams. One beam was used as a benchmark and five beams were strengthened using different configurations of CFRP. The parameters investigated in this study included wrapping schemes, CFRP amount, 90°/0° ply combination, and CFRP end anchorage. The experimental results show that externally bonded CFRP can increase the shear capacity of the beam significantly. In addition, the results indicated that the …

Aqueous Processing And Mechanical Properties Of Plzt Green Tapes, Jian-Huei Feng, Fatih Dogan May 2000

Aqueous Processing And Mechanical Properties Of Plzt Green Tapes, Jian-Huei Feng, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aqueous tape casting of lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) was performed using commercial poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) binders and various plasticizers. Colloidal properties of PLZT suspensions containing only polyelectrolyte dispersant were characterized by zeta potential, conductivity, and viscosity measurements. The effects of molecular weight as well as chemical structures of plasticizers and binders on green tapes were investigated by tensile testing. The tapes made from low molecular weight plasticizers showed higher plasticity, and glycerol was found to be the most effective plasticizer for PVA. Strong hydrogen bonding in high hydrolysis PVAs led to green tapes with high strength and high …

Emi Reduction From Airflow Aperture Arrays Using Dual-Perforated Screens And Loss, Min Li, Joe Nuebel, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Richard E. Dubroff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Airflow perforations in shielding enclosures can act as apertures facilitating the coupling from internal sources to external electromagnetic interference (EMI). This EMI radiation for single- and dual-screen configurations was studied herein experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. A general EMI reduction of more than 20 dB was achieved for dual-perforated screens spaced 1 cm apart when compared to EMI for a single perforated screen. However, in the dual-screen case, the space between the screens can act as a thin cavity, which, in turn, can lead to significant radiation at distinct angles. Damping the resonances by loading the space between …

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak May 2000

Fdtd Modeling Of Lumped Ferrites, Min Li, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Implementing ferrites in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling requires special care because of the complex nature of the ferrite impedance. Considerable computational resources and time are required to directly implement a ferrite in the FDTD method. Fitting the ferrite impedance to an exponential series with the generalized-pencil-of-function (GPOF) method and using recursive convolution is an approach that minimizes the additional computational burden. An FDTD algorithm for a lumped ferrite using GPOF and recursive convolution is presented herein. Two different ferrite impedances in a test enclosure were studied experimentally to demonstrate the FDTD modeling approach. The agreement is generally good.

Monitoring Precursor 16s Rrnas Of Acinetobacter Spp. In Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Systems, Daniel B. Oerther, Jakob Pernthaler, Andreas Schramm, Rudolf Amann, Lutgarde M. Raskin

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, Cangelosi and Brabant used oligonucleotide probes targeting the precursor 16S rRNA of Escherichia coli to demonstrate that the levels of precursor rRNA were more sensitive to changes in growth phase than the levels of total rRNA (G. A. Cangelosi and W. H. Brabant, J. Bacteriol. 179:4457- 4463, 1997). In order to measure changes in the levels of precursor rRNA in activated sludge systems, we designed oligonucleotide probes targeting the 3' region of the precursor 16S rRNA of Acinetobacter spp. We used these probes to monitor changes in the level of precursor 16S rRNA during batch growth of Acinetobacter spp. …

Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Dc Power Bus-Effectiveness Of Focal Smt Decoupling, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak May 2000

Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Dc Power Bus-Effectiveness Of Focal Smt Decoupling, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Signal vias are commonly used in multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current has to jump from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in power bus noise, and can produce an EMI problem as well. Numerical methods, such as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), moment methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC), were employed herein to study this problem. The modeled results were supported by the measurements. In addition, …

Dc Power Bus Modeling In High-Speed Digital Designs Including Conductor And Dielectric Losses, Jun Fan, Hao Shi, James L. Knighten, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power bus design is a critical aspect in high-speed digital circuit designs. A circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation formulation is presented herein to model arbitrary multilayer power bus structures including vertical discontinuities associated with surface mount (SMT) decoupling capacitor interconnects. Both conductor and dielectric losses are incorporated, and included into the first principles formulation. The agreement of modeling and measurements demonstrates its effectiveness and utilization in power bus designs.

Deformation In Concrete With External Cfrp Sheet Reinforcement, Joseph M. Tripi, Charles E. Bakis, Thomas E. Boothby, Antonio Nanni May 2000

Deformation In Concrete With External Cfrp Sheet Reinforcement, Joseph M. Tripi, Charles E. Bakis, Thomas E. Boothby, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A detailed experimental investigation of local and global deformations of tensile loaded, cracked, rectangular, concrete prisms reinforced with externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets was carried out. High and low modulus sheets were applied using three different thicknesses of epoxy interlayer between the sheet and concrete. It was found that the stiffness of the CFRP sheet had a dominant effect on global tension stiffening, whereas interlayer thickness had a dominant effect on local load transfer and damage formation. Thicker interlayers transferred load into through-cracked concrete over longer transfer zones, thereby increasing the spacing of subsequent cracks in the …

One-Dimensional Nature Of The Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2cu3o6.6, Herbert A. Mook, Pengcheng Dai, Fatih Dogan, Rodney Dale Hunt

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is increasing evidence that inhomogeneous distributions of charge and spin—so-called ‘striped phases’—play an important role in determining the properties of the high-temperature superconductors. For example, recent neutron-scattering measurements on the YBa2Cu3O7-x family of materials show both spin and charge fluctuations that are consistent with the striped-phase picture. But the fluctuations associated with a striped phase are expected to be one-dimensional, whereas the magnetic fluctuations observed to date appear to display two-dimensional symmetry. We show here that this apparent two-dimensionality results from measurements on twinned crystals, and that similar measurements on substantially detwinned crystals of …

Bridge J857 was constructed in 1932 and was scheduled for demolition in the fall of 1998 due to highway realignment. Two of the three solid reinforced concrete (RC) decks were strengthened using two FRP systems namely, near-surface mounted carbon FRP (CFRP) rods and surface bonded CFRP sheets. Bridge decks were …

Application Of Linear Matrix Inequalities In The Control Of Smart Structural Systems, Sridhar Sana, Vittal S. Rao Apr 2000

Application Of Linear Matrix Inequalities In The Control Of Smart Structural Systems, Sridhar Sana, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Natural frequency variations, unmodeled dynamics and control input constraints are some of the major problems in the design of controllers in smart structural systems. The performance and robustness of the closed-loop system are often constrained by the limited actuation force available from Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) actuators. Hence, it is desirable to design controllers to maximize the performance and robustness without violating the control input constraints. In this paper, we give a methodology for designing output feedback robust controllers for smart structural systems using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). A procedure is developed to incorporate the real parameter uncertainty resulting from …

Solid-State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of The Methyl Dynamics Of Poly(Alpha-Methylstyrene) And Polymethylphenylsilane, Robert D. O'Connor, Eric J. Ginsburg, Frank D. Blum Apr 2000

Solid-State Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of The Methyl Dynamics Of Poly(Alpha-Methylstyrene) And Polymethylphenylsilane, Robert D. O'Connor, Eric J. Ginsburg, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The methyl-d3 dynamics of two relatively similar polymers, poly(alpha-methylstyrene) (PAMS-d3) and polymethylphenylsilane (PMPS-d3), are investigated via deuterium NMR relaxation experiments. Our analysis of the relaxation data uses the entire solid-echo spectra to maximize the precision of the experiments with regard to the information available on the methyl dynamics. The analysis is novel in that it does not use M[infinity] or M0 to fit the relaxation data. Additionally, the three-site symmetric jump model is shown to not have an observable azimuthal angular dependence for T1 relaxation. The methyl dynamics are quantified with taum, sigma, and f which are the log-average correlation …

Modeling Emi Resulting From A Signal Via Transition Through Power/Ground Layers, Wei Cui, Xiaoning Ye, Bruce Archambeault, Doug White, Min Li, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Signal transitioning through layers on vias are very common in multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current must switch from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in noise on the power bus that can lead to signal integrity, as well as EMI problems. Numerical methods, such as the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), Moment of Methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method, were employed herein to study this …

The atomic structure of iron phosphate glasses containing uranium has been studied by complementary neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. by combining x-ray and neutron structure factors, detailed information about different pair interactions has been obtained. Most of the basic structural features such as coordination numbers and O-O and P-O distances in uranium containing glasses are the same as those in the base glass of batch composition 40Fe2O3-60P2O5 (mol %). However, the Fe-O distances change slightly with the addition of uranium. The observed structural parameters support a structural model in which the waste elements occupy voids in the Fe-O-P network, hence, …
