Investigation On The Liquefaction Of A Clayey-Sandy Soil During Changureh Earthquake, Mahmoud Ghahremani, Abbas Ghalandarzadeh, Kazuo Konagai
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An intense earthquake (MW = 6.4) occurred in western Iran, about 225 km west of Tehran at 7:28 local time, June 22, 2002. Surface soil in this area is mostly clay; however, clear traces of sand boiling, softening of soil, and consequent deformations were observed particularly in Hessar village. Some soil samples were prepared throughout an excavated pit from a depth of 2 m, the depth of the liquefied layer. The preliminary tests showed that the soil has a liquid limit of 38, a plasticity index of 18, and a < No. 200 fraction of 44%. These index characteristics would indicate a nonliquefiable soil according to the commonly used criteria. Analysis of cyclic triaxial test data suggests that the clayey sand deposit likely developed high residual excess pore pressures and significant shear strains during the earthquake and thus likely contributed to the observed lateral deformations. In this paper, different cases of observed liquefaction and consequent geotechnical phenomena are presented. Moreover, the results of laboratory tests on reconstituted samples are presented to prove how a soil with 44% of clay content could be liquefied.

Mass Movement Landslide (Jun 10, 2005) Along Sarab- Ardebil Main Road (West Slope Savalan Volcanic Mountain)- Azerbaijan- Iran, E. Ghanbari, M. K. Noutash
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In Azerbaijan, development of landslide hazard areas is occurring at a greater rate than in previous years. Mass movements (landslides, Mass wasting) may take place suddenly and catastrophically, resulting in debris and snow avalanches, lahars, rock falls, flows (debris, quick clay, loess and dry or wet sand and silt) .The region under survey is located in a valley named “ILANJIG”. Its slope is about 30 to 40 percent and the main road of Tabriz- Sarab- Ardebil is routed across this valley. This valley is a Fault Valley and residual signs of old landslides can be observed along the valley. Construction …

Prediction Of Slope Stability Using Artificial Neural Network (Case Study: Noabad, Mazandaran, Iran), Farzad Farrokhzad, Asskar Janalizadeh, Amin Barari
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The surface of the earth is very rarely flat and so there are slopes nearly everywhere. The loads on slope are due to the self-weight of the soil and to external loads, which may come from foundation at the top and seismic loads. Geotechnical engineers have to pay particular attention to geology, ground water and shear strength of soils in assessing slop stability. Neural networks are very sophisticated modeling techniques, capable of modeling extremely complex functions. In particular, neural networks are non-linear. With respect to the above advantages, in this paper, artificial neural networks are developed to predict slope stability …

Slope Stability Study Of External Dump Of Sonepur-Bazari Opencast Coal Mine, India — A Case Study, Indrajit Roy
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
India has reached the forefront of the world coal scene, ranking third in the total coal production, largely due to rapid increase in production from its opencast coal mines. But with a very high density of population, India is in a very disadvantageous position in acquiring large tracts of land for open cast coal mining which involves handling of large volume of waste rock overburden, a portion of which is to be dumped outside the quarry in a convenient place considering the safety, environment and economical aspects. This waste material dumped outside the quarry is termed as external dump. This …

Stability Analysis Of A 70m-High Cut At An Ancient Landslide Area In Patras, Greece, Costas I. Papantonopoulos, Panos G. Kloukinas, George E. Mylonakis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A 70m-high slope is currently under construction near the entrance of a cut-and-cover tunnel in the inner loop highway of City of Patras – a seismically active area in Western Greece (PGA = 0.24g). The slope consists of marl layers dipping inwards and exhibiting distinct sets of joints. The landscape provides evidence that the site has been subjected to a major landslide at an unknown time in the past. Geotechnical investigation detected a sheared zone at about 15m below ground surface, and a water table a few meters below the planned toe of the slope. The angle and position of …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper presents the study and stabilization of a paleo-landslide reactivated because of the excavation works carried out at its foot to construct a new lift in Formigal skiing resort. Inclinometers were installed and surface movements were controlled by GPS techniques in order to analyse the sliding surface and to define the stabilization measures to undertake. The data obtained from the instrumentation was used to perform a back-analysis that allowed to determine the kinematics of the movement as well as to define the appropriate stabilization measures. Presently, the evolution of the movement is controlled by GPS.
The Stability Of Flood Defenses On Permeable Soils: The London Avenue Canal Failures In New Orleans, W. Kanning, S. Van Baars, J. K. Vrijling
The Stability Of Flood Defenses On Permeable Soils: The London Avenue Canal Failures In New Orleans, W. Kanning, S. Van Baars, J. K. Vrijling
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The two failures of the London Avenue Canal floodwalls contributed largely to the flooding of central New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina. In this paper, both failures are analyzed and compared to each other since the flood defenses are both located on permeable soils. Photo’s observation and calculations are used for the analysis. Both failures are caused by the permeable sand layer below the floodwall that allowed high pore water pressures to develop below the floodwall. However, the south breach seems to be caused by the piping failure mechanism and the north breach by loss of stability. At the South …

Assessment Of Spt-Based Liquefaction Potential Of Erbaa (Tokat), Turkey, Mugh Akin, Tamer Topal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Turkey is one of the earthquake prone countries in the world. The seismicity of the northern part of Turkey is mainly controlled by active North Anatolian Fault Zone. Several earthquakes and earthquake triggered hazards occurred by the tectonic activity of this fault zone. In recent past, 1999 Adapazari earthquake (Mw=7.4) has caused several fatalities in the western part of this fault zone. One of the most important observations after the earthquake was the liquefaction-related damages of the buildings. In this study, the liquefaction potential of Erbaa (Tokat) settlement area in Turkey, located partly on an alluvial plain of …

Considerations On Different Features Of Local Seismic Effect Numerical Simulations: The Case Studied Of Castelnuovo Garfagnana, Savino Russo, Giovanna Vessia, Claudio Cherubini
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Numerical studies of local seismic effects are commonly carried out by means of 1D and 2D simulations performed in order to evaluate amplification effects in terms of acceleration response spectra and amplification factors. Such approaches can be easily compared with prescriptions from technical provisions as Eurocode 8 that lead design activity whenever a poor soil characterization is available. When suitable investigation campaigns and regional hazard studies are undertaken accurate studies on local seismic effects can be developed. As a matter of fact, soil high heterogeneity and variability, input motion features and geometrical irregularities of soil layer boundaries heavily affect seismic …
Damage To Tall Structures Situated At Long Distance From Epicenter Due To Long Period Seismic Waves And Effect On Structures On Filled Lands, Arun Bapat
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Damages during earthquakes are mostly confined to few tens of kilometer radiuses from epicenter and are located within the highest Intensity Isoseismal. In addition to this it has been seen that the Long Period Surface Waves cause heavy damage to tall structures (height > 17 m). Such damages have been observed during Mexican Earthquake of 1985, Bhuj Earthquake (India) of 2001 and Pakistan Earthquake of 2005. The destruction had occurred at 520, 310 and 150 km distance from the epicenters of the above three earthquakes. The damage is accentuated if the structures happen to be located on the filled land. With …
Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash
Design Prediction And Performance Of Piles For Seismic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas. The performance of piles depends on soil profile, pile and earthquake parameters. The soils may also be prone to liquefaction. In non-liquefying soils the shear modulus degrades with increasing strain or displacements. Material damping increases with increasing strain or displacement. Stiffness of single pile and pile groups are needed for different modes of vibration; e.g., vertical vibrations, horizontal sliding in x or y direction, rotation about x or y axis and torsion. Group action is generally accounted for by including interaction factors. Pile response in any …

Google Earth Mapping Of Damage From The Niigata-Ken-Chuetsu M6.6 Earthquake Of 16 July 2007, Robert Kayen, Wm. Clint Steele, Brian Collins, Kevin Walker
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
We describe the use of Google Earth during and after a large damaging earthquake that struck the central Japan coast on 16 July 2007 to collect and organize damage information and guide the reconnaissance activities. This software enabled greater real-time collaboration among scientists and engineers. After the field investigation, the Google Earth map is used as a final reporting product that was directly linked to the more traditional research report document. Finally, we analyze the use of the software within the context of a post-disaster reconnaissance investigation, and link it to student use of Google Earth in field situations.

The Chi-Chi earthquake and subsequent typhoon events induced severe landslides and debris flows in the watershed of Tachia river. It inflicted severe damage to the power generation facilities and highway links. For the rehabilitation planning, quantitative assessment of landslides, debris flows and river deposits were conducted by using aerial photos and satellite images obtained at six stages of earthquake and typhoon events. The future trends of landslide and debris flow were also investigated by using empirical models. The long-term deposition or scouring was also conducted by numerical simulation. The results show that over 50,000,000 to 70,000,000m3 of sliding volume …

Performance Of Large Storage Tank In Bhuj Earthquake, K. R. Datye, M. G. Khare
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The 2001 Bhuj earthquake of magnitude 7.7 caused a widespread damage in the state of Gujarat, India. This paper presents a case study of phosphoric acid storage tank weighing 100,000 kN and measuring 30 m in diameter built for a fertilizer plant in Kandla, Gujarat. The post earthquake performance assessment was carried out by exhuming the nearby piles and non-destructive testing of piles. The storage tanks supported on piles, installed in a ground treated with stone columns, showed no failure and have performed well during the earthquake. The design philosophy used to resist axial and lateral loads is explained.

The College of the Redwoods (CR) located near Eureka, California would like to upgrade a series of existing buildings that are unfortunately located on secondary faults associated with the active Little Salmon Fault (LSF) zone. In the early 1990’s a deterministic value of the maximum dip-slip displacement that had occurred on one of these secondary faults located beneath the southeast building corner of the former library was measured to be 1.7 feet. This displacement was resolved into approximately 1.5 feet horizontal offset and 0.8 feet of vertical offset, based on the secondary fault plane dip. Geologically, it has not been …

Seismic Microzonation Studies In The City Of Ragusa (Italy), Salvatore Grasso, Lauretta Spina, Michele Maugeri
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The geotechnical zonation of the subsoil of the city of Ragusa suggests a high vulnerability of the physical environment added to site amplification of the ground motion phenomena. These elements concur on the definition of the Seismic Geotechnical Hazard of the city of Ragusa that should be correctly evaluated, through geo-settled seismic microzoning maps. Based on the seismic history of Ragusa, the following scenario events have been considered: the “Val di Noto” earthquake of January 11, 1693 (M=7.3), the “Etna” earthquake of March 1, 1818 (M=5.9), the 1895 earthquake (IMAX= 7 EMS), the Modica earthquake of January 23, …

Seismic Site Effects In The Faulted Piancastagnaio Area (Italy): An Explanation Attempt, M. I. Rainone, P. Torrese, P. Signanini
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Analysis of seismic site effects is still an open issue within projects that deal with the reduction of seismic risk. In the absence of surface and borehole arrays measurements, the main methodological approach consists of the individuation and the consequent appraisal of the surface effects in presence of “an expected” earthquake, through integrated geological, geomorphological, geological-technical, geophysical multidisciplinary surveys and by the use of numerical modelling. In historically densely populated urban areas, it is possible to verify if the calculated accelerations can be, at least qualitatively, correlated to the level of damage to buildings. However, there are frequent cases in …

This paper presents a brief overview of research being conducted in the area of Seismic Hazards Mitigation. The focus of the study has been on the development of integrated model of a structure with controllable fluid damper. The damper is used with an objective of reducing the dynamic wave propagation potential in the structure, upon the structural excitation. Before its employability to serve the intended purpose, the system identification and the model validation are the pre-requisites for the optimal functioning of the damper. A phenomenological model of the controllable fluid damper-Magnetorheological damper is used along with other Smart materials in …

The paper presents a case history related to the interaction of a compressor, its concrete block foundation and the supporting soil system. The owner of the compressor asked the Romanian National Center for Earthquake Engineering and Vibrations to solve the problem of the excessive vibration amplitudes that put the compressor out of service at a short time after starting to operate. The first step that was made was the in situ performance of measurements, in order to establish the dynamic properties of the compressor foundation, as well as the amplitudes of the vibrations at the operating speed. The design of …
Destructive Water-Borne Pressure Waves, Gregory L. Hempen
Destructive Water-Borne Pressure Waves, Gregory L. Hempen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Many energetic sources (blasting, pile-driving, seismic exploration, …) near or within a water body may produce destructive, water-borne pressure waves. Pressure waves of sufficient amplitude can impact water-side structures and aquatic fauna. Such energetic sources produce pressure waves and cavitation that can cause concrete to spall, deform metal sheets that are near to the source, kill aquatic organisms, and/or damage hearing of marine mammals at large distances. Any program (energetic systems) that causes pressure waves within the water layer may be conducted in a manner that reduces the pressure waves’ severity. The methodology to reduce pressure waves does not need …

Potential Of Vibration Studies In The Soil Characterization Around Power Plants – A Case Study, R. Sreekala, N. Lakshmanan, K. Muthumani, N. Gopalakrishnan, K. Sathishkumar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Propagation characteristics of waves generated by the various sources of vibration can be dependent on the type of the generated waves, which can be accessed by measuring particle motion in vertical, longitudinal and transverse direction. The monitoring of motion in three directions on the ground surface and in depth is important for the characterization of propagating waves. Vibrations of the machine foundations induce elastic waves in soil, which may affect surrounding buildings. Generally, the attenuation of vibrations on surface is composed of two factors namely geometric damping and material damping. The paper is an experimental investigation with regard to the …
Spt Automatic Hammer Efficiency Revisited, Emre Biringen, John Davie
Spt Automatic Hammer Efficiency Revisited, Emre Biringen, John Davie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Automatic SPT hammers typically provide more transferred energy to drill rods than traditional safety hammers. This results in lower measured blow-counts from automatic hammers when compared to safety hammers. To eliminate such deviations in blow-counts, quality assurance for licensing new generation nuclear power plants requires that SPT energy measurements be made for each hammer used so that blow-counts can be corrected and be appropriately used in foundation design. A series of SPT hammer energy measurements was conducted on automatic hammers using a pile driving analyzer and employing the force velocity method to measure the actual energy transferred into the system. …
