An “Unexpected” Rock Failure In A Limestone Open Pit Mine, D. Lo Presti, M. Cravero, G. Iabichino Aug 2008

An “Unexpected” Rock Failure In A Limestone Open Pit Mine, D. Lo Presti, M. Cravero, G. Iabichino

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

On 28th October 2004 a rock failure occurred in a limestone open pit quarry in Tuscany (Italy). The phenomenon evolved slowly with the collapse of about 1000 cubic meters. The complex failure mechanism mainly involved plane sliding along stratifications with rotation and block toppling. The phenomenon continued to evolve slowly and on 3rd November failure extended to the neighbouring portion of rock with a total collapse of about 5000 cubic meters of rock. Failure analysis took advantage of an accurate characterization of geology, geometry and mechanical properties of the collapsed rock mass. Such analysis led to the conclusion that the …

Characterization Of A Weak Rock Mass And Geoengineering Analyses For A Canyon Landfill In Northern California, Dimitrios Zekkos, Julien Cohen-Waeber, Edmund Medley, Chris Hunt, Krzysztof Jesionek

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A case history of extensive 60-m high excavations in a weak rock mass for a canyon landfill in Northern California is presented. The landfill is underlain by the Panoche Formation, a complex series of sandstones, siltstones, claystones, shales and conglomerates, thought to be dominantly turbidites, deposited as sub-sea fan deposits. As part of the design, kinematic analyses were performed, accompanied by two independent approaches used to evaluate the strength of the rock mass. One approach was based on laboratory rock core testing, while the second approach was based on the Hoek and Brown Criterion using mostly field observations. The two …

Shape Optimization Of Tunnel By Finite Element Method, M. S. Ranadive Aug 2008

Shape Optimization Of Tunnel By Finite Element Method, M. S. Ranadive

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The stresses around the periphery of tunnel openings are in general independent of factors such as size of the opening and elastic modulus of surrounding geotechnical material. The stresses however depend upon the shape of the opening and the residual stresses. At any point over the periphery the significant stresses are the normal stresses in the direction tangential to the opening periphery. By trials involving appropriate modifications to the finite element idealization, the shape of the opening could be derived such that the tangential tensile stresses are minimized and simultaneously the compressive tangential stresses are below the permissible limits. Though, …

In the framework of “Radès-La Goulette“bridge project (Tunisia), this study focuses on the construction of embankments located in north Lake of Tunis. These embankments with averaged height of about 6 m are founded on highly compressible clayey sand and muddy sand layers. A soil improvement technique is then imposed, to overcome the lack of low bearing capacity and high pronounced settlements. Two solutions of soil improvement have been studied; the first one consists in vertical “Geodrains” drilled until 10 m depth associated with step by step construction of preloading embankment. The second technique is stone columns reinforcement up to 10 …

Compressive Strength Of Repaired Road By Recycling Technique Of Pavement Materials, Runglawan Rachan, Suksun Horpibulsuk Aug 2008

Compressive Strength Of Repaired Road By Recycling Technique Of Pavement Materials, Runglawan Rachan, Suksun Horpibulsuk

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Highways, Thailand, has used the pavement recycling technique to restore damaged pavement since 1965. This technique is economical because cement is readily available at reasonable cost in Thailand. From this study, it is found that the field roller-compacted strength, qufr is lower than the laboratory strength, qul under the same dry unit weight, soil-water/cement ratio and curing time due to several field factors. The ratio qufr/qul varies from 50 to 100%. Non-uniformity in mixing soil with cement is realized by the ratio of field hand-compacted strength to laboratory strength, qufh/q …

The paper describes the mechanical behaviour of double porosity clay fills. A trial embankment had been constructed on a 20-30 year-old landfill and monitored for 3 years. The embankment was instrumented by hydrostatic levelling profiles, surveying reference points, pore pressure gauges, inclinometers and depth reference points. Centrifuge modelling of the embankment behaviour on the consolidated landfill was carried out in the geotechnical centrifuge at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. The models were instrumented similarly to the real embankment with pore pressure transducers and a newly developed tool called “system of straws” for measurement of deformation at different depths. Surface deformations were …

The Impact Of Low Probability Ground Motions On Canadian Geotechnical Engineering Practice, W. D. Liam Finn Aug 2008

The Impact Of Low Probability Ground Motions On Canadian Geotechnical Engineering Practice, W. D. Liam Finn

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The adoption of design motions with a 2% rate of exceedance in 50 years in the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2005) has had a major impact on geotechnical engineering practice in Canada. The peak ground accelerations were doubled compared with the previous motions which had an exceedance rate of 10% in 50 years. The increase in accelerations has had a huge effect on assessments of liquefaction potential and slope stability, because the methods of assessment in common use depend on peak ground acceleration. This paper describes typical problems encountered in Canadian practice with use of the low probability …

An Analysis Of Causes Of Urban Landslides In Residual Lateritic Soil, Rajib Kumar Goswami, Baleshwar Singh Aug 2008

An Analysis Of Causes Of Urban Landslides In Residual Lateritic Soil, Rajib Kumar Goswami, Baleshwar Singh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Landslides in natural slopes of residual soil are a common problem encountered in tropical regions. Guwahati city, located in Assam in the north-eastern part of India, is an urban watershed covered by a number of hills and hillocks that are capped with lateritic soil. Although the slopes originally consisted of hard and strong rocks, their stability have been impaired by weathering, heavy rainfall and seepage flows. Encroachments and cuttings on the hill slopes due to unplanned urbanisation and earthquake tremors have aggravated the problem. A study of landslides was undertaken focussing on degree of weathering of the rock units, their …

Back-Analyses Of Landfill Slope Failures, Nejan Huvaj-Sarihan, Timothy D. Stark Aug 2008

Back-Analyses Of Landfill Slope Failures, Nejan Huvaj-Sarihan, Timothy D. Stark

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper investigates the shear strength of municipal solid waste (MSW) using back analyses of failed waste slopes. Shear strength of MSW is a function of many factors such as waste type, composition, compaction, daily cover, moisture conditions, age, decomposition, overburden pressure, etc. These factors together with non-standardized sampling methods, insufficient sample size to be representative of in-situ conditions, and limited shear displacement or axial strain imposed during the shear tests affect the test results and have created considerable scatter in reported test results. This scatter led the authors to pursue the back-analysis of failed waste slopes as a better …

Evaluation And Stabilisation Of An Embankment At Sebastopol, South Wales, Uk, Austin Weltman, Xun Yuan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper introduces a slope movement and related railway track movement at Sebastopol, South Wales, UK. The monitoring results including slope movements and groundwater levels are summarised and presented. The slope at Sebastopol has a long history of instability. Because of continued gradual movement of the railway line and accelerated movement in 2004, a series of small diameter ‘Grundomat’ micro-piles were installed alongside the track early in 2005 to increase the shear resistance of the underlying soil and to reduce the rate of slope movement to a small but manageable amount. The slope movements have been continuously monitored since the …

Geotechnical Schemes For Constructing Light Structures On Instable Slopes, Farzad Farrokhzad, Asskar Janali-Zadeh Aug 2008

Geotechnical Schemes For Constructing Light Structures On Instable Slopes, Farzad Farrokhzad, Asskar Janali-Zadeh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Slopes in soils and rocks are natural or man-made structures. Landslide and slope failure are responsible for millions of dollars of damage to public and private property every year. The great variety of slope movements reflects the diversity of conditions that cause the slope to become unstable and the processes that trigger the movement. The stability of a slope can be threatened by erosion due to surface water runoff, or more severe erosive forces associated with water. In this paper the geotechnical schemes which were done for constructing light structure (aviculture) in Noabad (Mazandaran-Iran) by regarding to the movement of …

Horizontal Translational Failures Of Levees Due To Water Filled Gaps, Meindert A. Van, Cor Zwanenburg, John M. Van Esch, Michael K. Sharp, Reed L. Mosher

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A peat levee at Wilnis in The Netherlands suddenly failed at the end of the relatively dry summer of 2003. On Monday, 29 August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. gulf coast and breached, among other failures, the 17th Street Canal. These failures triggered large research programs. In the Wilnis case, it was eventually deduced that the 5-m horizontal translation of the levee was triggered by a combination of reduced weight by evaporation, shrinkage and cracking of the peat material, and an increased head in the sand layer under the dike. A key factor in the 17th Street Canal failure …
