Swelling Soils Behaviour In Cyclic Suction-Controlled Drying And Wetting, H. Nowamooz, F. Masrouri
Swelling Soils Behaviour In Cyclic Suction-Controlled Drying And Wetting, H. Nowamooz, F. Masrouri
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Cyclic drying and wetting phenomena of the expansive clayey soils cause the progressive settlements which could affect principally the foundations of buildings, the drainage channels and the buffers in radioactive waste disposals. In order to better understand the coupling between these hydraulic cycles and the mechanical behaviour of the swelling soils, this article presents an experimental study performed on two different expansive soils (molded and natural) using oedometer tests by imposing suction variations with the osmotic technique. Several successive swelling and shrinking cycles were applied under different constant vertical net stresses. During the suction cycles, the compacted samples showed cumulative …
Testing And Stabilization Of Saline Sabkha Soils: A Review, Omar Saeed Baghabra Al-Amoudi
Testing And Stabilization Of Saline Sabkha Soils: A Review, Omar Saeed Baghabra Al-Amoudi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Sabkha is one of the many types of evaporate regimes that exist around the globe. In addition to being distributed along the coasts, sabkha soils cover a number of continental depressions, both of which usually form in hot, arid climates and are associated with shallow groundwater tables. Sabkhas are well distributed locally and over the whole world. Sabkhas are characterized as being salt-full and water-sensitive soils. The presence of soluble salts makes the use of distilled water in testing these soils, as recommended by ASTM, etc., inappropriate. Further, sabkha soils possess low strength at their natural condition. Therefore, it would …

Underground Facilities In Loess, Dimcho Evstatiev, Yordan Evlogiev
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The underground facilities in loess in Bulgaria have a long history. The loess represents one of the best studied geological formations, its stratigraphic and engineering geological properties being well explored. It is characterized by a thick aeration zone, reaching up to 80-100 m. After the depth of 3-4 m from the surface, low humidity and constant temperature (15-160) are maintained in it. The composition of sandy and silty loess, is dominated by quartz, while the clayey fraction contains high amount of Са2+, which determines the relatively low hydrophilicity. Moreover, loess is easily excavated, keeps vertical slopes …

Monitoring Seismic And Geophysical Paprameters With The Help Of College Instruments And Staff, Arun Bapat
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A number of geophysical and seismically significantly related parameters are routinely measured in college laboratories. These are Magnetic field, Gravity field, Radioactivity, sub-surface temperature. After one major earthquake in India (M = 6.5, Latur earthquake of 29 September 1993) some colleges were used to measure these parameters. These parameters show premonitory changes prior to the occurrence of main shock. As the experiment was undertaken during post-seismic period the magnitudes of the seismic events were in the range of 4.5 to 5.0. The advantage of such method is that these are extended over an extensive area.
