Reactivation of an ancient landslide detected in 1987 affected the southern side of the Viaduct No.1 located in the Caracas-La Guaira highway, which connects Caracas, capital of Venezuela, with its main seaport and the Simon Bolivar International Airport. The Viaduct was built in 1953 and covered a gorge of approximately 300 m. It consisted of three parallel double-hinged arch ribs made of plain concrete spanning over approximately 152 m and two smaller access Viaducts on either side of the arch rib span. This paper summarizes the results from geotechnical investigation, the evaluation of inclinometers readings and surface control points and …

Deterioration Of Bored Cast In Situ Piles Due To Aggressive Water, V. T. Ganpule, S. Y. Mhaiskar Aug 2008

Deterioration Of Bored Cast In Situ Piles Due To Aggressive Water, V. T. Ganpule, S. Y. Mhaiskar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Most of the data available from the cement industry and the literature exhibits performance of concrete cubes cured in normal water. Even the literature related to the durability of concrete deals mostly with concrete cured in normal water (closer to potable water in characteristics). However, the bored-cast-in-situ piles are cured in the ground water. The development of strength of concrete of bored cast-in-situ piles depends upon the quality of ground water. The effect of sulphates and chloride is well established and most of the codes stipulate permissible limits of pH, sulphates and chlorides contents in the ground water. In the …

Soil And Structure Vibrations From Construction And Industrial Sources, Mark R. Svinkin Aug 2008

Soil And Structure Vibrations From Construction And Industrial Sources, Mark R. Svinkin

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Construction and industrial dynamic sources can produce environmental vibration problems for adjacent and remote structures. High vibrations and unacceptable dynamic settlements could disturb sensitive devices and people and even be the cause of structural damage. The dynamic sources, the geology at a site, and the condition of structures affect ground and structure vibrations. Each construction or industrial site is unique and requires consideration of specific approaches at the site for decreasing vibration effects of construction activities or industrial dynamic sources on surrounding structures. Specifications prepared for a site, calculation and prediction of expected vibrations, and monitoring and control of ground …

Upon entering his office, and receiving a warm welcome, my assignment as a Research Assistant at the Richmond Field Station was explained to me and my schedule of classes …

A Historical Perspective On Geotechnical Case Histories Courses, J. David Rogers Aug 2008

A Historical Perspective On Geotechnical Case Histories Courses, J. David Rogers

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Ralph Peck introduced the concept of using a geotechnical case histories course to teach students problem solving and technical communications skills, beginning around 1956. This course was developed as a professional practice course at the graduate level, intended for civil engineers of diverse backgrounds as well as geoscientists. Students were required to prepare one-page summaries of each case history profiled in the course, a requirement that left an enormous impression on the students. A different approach was employed by the University of California, Berkeley, beginning around 1970. Berkeley offered two graduate courses in the mold of ABET “capstone courses,” graduate …

Case Studies In Forensic Geotechnical And Foundation Engineering, D. S. "Sax" Saxena

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Forensics in the geo-domain encompasses an extensive array of topics with specific emphasis in geotechnical related fields. A new discipline known as forensic geotechnical engineering (FGE) has been created to deal with investigations of soil-interaction related failures of engineered facilities or structures. A practicing geotechnical engineer cannot provide services without the fear of a lawsuit. Services of geotechnical engineers experienced in jurisprudence system are commissioned to investigate such failures. This paper presents two case histories where forensic geotechnical engineering was effectively utilized to identify, investigate, and remediate the problem as well assist in litigation. The first case history identifies a …

Lessons Learned From The Performance Of A Degradable Shale Embankment: Case Study, Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero, Neal W. Fannin, James G. Ulinski, Suresh Gutta

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Degradable shales are sedimentary rocks with properties that can vary from those of solid rock to soil like materials if subjected to wetting and drying cycles. If the potential for degradation of the shale is not identified on time, rock like particles could be used as strong embankment material. After wetting and drying cycles, degradation occurs and the initial large voids formed between the generally uniform rock particles are filled with smaller fragments, resulting in significant settlements and slope instability. This paper present a case study of a 40 foot (12.2m) approach embankment having 1.5H:1V slopes that was unintentionally constructed …

Predicted Versus Observed Failure Surface: A Case Study, P. K. Basudhar, G. Bhattacharya

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper pertains to the studies undertaken to investigate the efficacy and correctness of a numerical scheme developed by the authors to predict the stability of slopes. As such, a well documented failed test embankment has been reanalyzed using the suggested method for predicting the critical slip surface and the associated factor of safety. A comparison of the predicted failure surface (critical slip surface) with the observed failure surface showed close agreement; the corresponding value of factor of safety was found to be close to unity. Thus, the case study demonstrated that with appropriate choice of the strength parameters the …

Mexico has a considerable number of regions covered by expansive soils (12% of the total country area). One of these regions, named as “Cienega de Chapala”, is located in the state of Jalisco; the morphology of this region is mostly volcanic where plains and basins are found among volcanic formations. Plains and basins contain a variety of rocks mixed with volcanic ashes. The soil is formed by alluvial and lacustrine lands arranged in layers where the expansivity of superficial layers range from medium to high. This work describes two cases to illustrate typical problems originated by subsoil displacements. These displacements …

Some Interesting Results About Behaviour Of Granular Media, Francesco Di Credico, P. Signanini, P. Torrese Aug 2008

Some Interesting Results About Behaviour Of Granular Media, Francesco Di Credico, P. Signanini, P. Torrese

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This study represents an attempt to clarify some anomalous behaviour found in alluvional terrains when subjected to an earthquake. Our approach to the study of granular media has been bibliographic and experimental. Despite many studies carried on this topic, this behaviour is still little understood because of the complex nature of granular media. The goal to the experimental research was at least to confirm the „anomalous“ behaviour reported in previous studies (e.g., chain of force, not-uniform distribution of pressure, etc.). In particular, this study is focused on pressure distributions and their quantification with respect to the pure granular media, and …
