Quantitative Biomechanical Evaluation Of Upper Extremity: Strain Behavior Of The Humerus Diaphysis Under Loading, Prateek Grover
Quantitative Biomechanical Evaluation Of Upper Extremity: Strain Behavior Of The Humerus Diaphysis Under Loading, Prateek Grover
Dissertations (1934 -)
While mechanical behavior of the adult human lower extremity long bones under loading has been studied extensively, the same is not true for the adult human humerus. Mechanical data reported for cadaveric humeri and anatomic humerus models are limited to stiffness and rigidity. Strain characteristics of the humerus diaphysis as a function of loading provide a valuable addition to the currently limited knowledge. The objective of this dissertation was to accomplish this goal, using numerical/finite element (FE) methods applied to a standard anatomic humerus model (Reference-Humerus) that was developed from the NIH Visible Human Project for this purpose. Four phases …
Preservation Of Methanogenic Cultures To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion, Ujwal H. Bhattad
Preservation Of Methanogenic Cultures To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion, Ujwal H. Bhattad
Dissertations (1934 -)
The use of anaerobic biotechnology is increasing as a sustainable process to treat various organic wastes. Methanogens convert organic COD into CH4 and play the key role to drive thermodynamically unfavorable biochemical fermentation reactions and keep the digestion process steady and efficient. Progressive understanding of anaerobic microbiology with digester functionality may help to develop efficient, customized methanogenic cultures to enhance anaerobic bioprocesses. Preservation of methanogenic cultures via drying would be a cost-effective option for research and practical applications. However, preservation of methanogenic cultures is challenging due to methanogen sensitivity to O2 toxicity and drying, and very limited work is reported …

Integration Of Eeg-Fmri In An Auditory Oddball Paradigm Using Joint Independent Component Analysis, Jain Mangalathu Arumana
Dissertations (1934 -)
The integration of event-related potential (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can contribute to characterizing neural networks with high temporal and spatial resolution. The overall objective of this dissertation is to determine the sensitivity and limitations of joint independent component analysis (jICA) within-subject for integration of ERP and fMRI data collected simultaneously in a parametric auditory oddball paradigm. The main experimental finding in this work is that jICA revealed significantly stronger and more extensive activity in brain regions associated with the auditory P300 ERP than a P300 linear regression analysis, both at the group level and within-subject. The results …
Relating Methanogen Community Structure And Function In Anaerobic Digesters, Benjamin T.W. Bocher
Relating Methanogen Community Structure And Function In Anaerobic Digesters, Benjamin T.W. Bocher
Dissertations (1934 -)
A deeper understanding of how microbial community structure relates to process function would help improve anaerobic digester design. This dissertation describes both qualitative and quantitative relationships between anaerobic digester function and microbial community structure. Community structure was characterized using banding pattern intensities from denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) for the mcrA gene of methanogenic Archaea. The first project compared a single-stage continuously mixed stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and staging with an acidogenic CSTR followed by a methanogenic CSTR. After seeding with the same biomass, these unique process configurations exhibited different function and qualitatively different methanogen communities. Compared to a single-stage …
Finite-Time Control And Estimation Of Nonlinear Systems With Disturbance Attenuation, Mohammad N. Elbsat
Finite-Time Control And Estimation Of Nonlinear Systems With Disturbance Attenuation, Mohammad N. Elbsat
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation addresses the mixed criteria finite-time bounded controller and observer design of certain classes of nonlinear systems. Finite-time bounded controllers and observers are used to guarantee performance bounds on the transient response of the systems considered. A robust and resilient mixed criteria state-feedback controller design is developed for a class of nonlinear systems with conic-type nonlinearities lying within a hypersphere of uncertain center, additive disturbances, and controller gain perturbations in discrete and continuous-time. Furthermore, a robust and resilient mixed criteria state-dependent state-feedback controller design is developed for a class of nonlinear systems with state dependent system matrices and state-dependent …

Performance And Reliability Of Non-Markovian Heterogeneous Distributed Computing Systems, Jorge E. Pezoa, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Average service time, quality-of-service (QoS), and service reliability associated with heterogeneous parallel and distributed computing systems (DCSs) are analytically characterized in a realistic setting for which tangible, stochastic communication delays are present with nonexponential distributions. The departure from the traditionally assumed exponential distributions for event times, such as task-execution times, communication arrival times and load-transfer delays, gives rise to a non-Markovian dynamical problem for which a novel age dependent, renewal-based distributed queuing model is developed. Numerical examples offered by the model shed light on the operational and system settings for which the Markovian setting, resulting from employing an exponential-distribution assumption …

Identification Of Hemodynamically Optimal Coronary Stent Designs Based On Vessel Caliber, Timothy J. Gundert, Alison L. Marsden, Weiguang Yang, David S. Marks, John F. Ladisa
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Coronary stent design influences local patterns of wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal growth, restenosis, and the endothelialization of stent struts. The number of circumferentially repeating crowns NC for a given stent de- sign is often modified depending on the target vessel caliber, but the hemodynamic implications of altering NC have not previously been studied. In this investigation, we analyzed the relationship between vessel diameter and the hemodynamically optimal NC using a derivative-free optimization algorithm coupled with computational fluid dynamics. The algorithm computed the optimal vessel diameter, defined as minimizing the area of stent-induced …

Adaptive Optics Scanning Ophthalmoscopy With Annular Pupils, Yusufu N. Sulai, Alfredo Dubra
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Annular apodization of the illumination and/or imaging pupils of an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) for improving transverse resolution was evaluated using three different normalized inner radii (0.26, 0.39 and 0.52). In vivo imaging of the human photoreceptor mosaic at 0.5 and 10° from fixation indicates that the use of an annular illumination pupil and a circular imaging pupil provides the most benefit of all configurations when using a one Airy disk diameter pinhole, in agreement with the paraxial confocal microscopy theory. Annular illumination pupils with 0.26 and 0.39 normalized inner radii performed best in terms of the narrowing …

Unconventional Uses Of Microcantilevers As Chemical Sensors In Gas And Liquid Media, I. Dufour, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Lucat, C. Ayela, F. Ménil, O. Brand
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The use of microcantilevers as (bio)chemical sensors usually involves the application of a chemically sensitive layer. The coated device operates either in a static bending regime or in a dynamic flexural mode. While some of these coated devices may be operated successfully in both the static and the dynamic modes, others may suffer from certain shortcomings depending on the type of coating, the medium of operation and the sensing application. Such shortcomings include lack of selectivity and reversibility of the sensitive coating and a reduced quality factor due to the surrounding medium. In particular, the performance of microcantilevers excited in …

Legacy effects of past land use and disturbance are increasingly recognized, yet consistent definitions of and criteria for defining them do not exist. To address this gap in biological- and ecosystem-assessment frameworks, we propose a general metric for evaluating potential legacy effects, which are computed by normalizing altered system function persistence with duration of disturbance. We also propose two distinct legacy-effect categories: signal effects from lags in transport and structural effects from physical landscape changes. Using flux records for water, sediment, nitrogen, and carbon from long-term study sites in the eastern United States from 1500 to 2000, we identify gaps …

Modeling And Parametric Design Of Permanent-Magnet Ac Machines Using Computationally Efficient Finite-Element Analysis, Gennadi Y. Sizov, Dan M. Ionel, Nabeel Demerdash
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Computationally efficient finite-element analysis (FEA) (CE-FEA) fully exploits the symmetries of electric and magnetic circuits of sine-wave current-regulated synchronous machines and yields substantial savings of computational efforts. Motor performance is evaluated through Fourier analysis and a minimum number of magnetostatic solutions. The major steady-state performance indices (average torque, ripple and cogging torque, back-electromotive-force waveforms, and core losses) are satisfactorily estimated as compared with the results of detailed time-stepping (transient) FEA. In this paper, the CE-FEA method is presented and applied to a parametric design study for an interior-permanent-magnet machine. Significant reduction of simulation times is achieved (approximately two orders of …

Using Inductance As A Tuning Parameter For Rf Meta-Atoms, Derrick Langley, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Peter J. Collins
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The resonant frequency of metamaterials structured with split ring resonator (SRR) meta-atoms is determined primarily through the capacitance and inductance of the individual meta-atoms. Two designs that vary inductance incrementally were modeled, simulated, fabricated, and tested to investigate the role inductance plays in metamaterial designs. The designs consisted of strategically adding sections to the SRR to increase the inductance, but in a manner that minimized capacitance variations. Each design showed a shift in resonant frequency that was proportional to the length of the added section. As the length of each section was increased, the resonant frequency shifted from 2.78 GHz …

Fault-Tolerant Operation Of Delta-Connected Scalar- And Vector-Controlled Ac Motor Drives, Ahmed Mohamed Sayed Ahmed, Nabeel Demerdash
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Operation and analysis of delta-connected ac motor-drive systems under fault-tolerant open-phase mode of operation is introduced in this paper for both scalar- and vector-controlled motor-drive systems. This technique enables the operation of the three-phase motor upon a failure in one of its phases without the need of a special fault-detection algorithm. It is mainly used to significantly mitigate torque pulsations, which are caused by an open-delta configuration in the stator windings. The performance of the fault-tolerant system was verified using a detailed time stepping finite element simulation as well experimental tests for a 5-hp 460-V induction motor-drive system and the …

The integration of event-related potential (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can contribute to characterizing neural networks with high temporal and spatial resolution. This research aimed to determine the sensitivity and limitations of applying joint independent component analysis (jICA) within-subjects, for ERP and fMRI data collected simultaneously in a parametric auditory frequency oddball paradigm. In a group of 20 subjects, an increase in ERP peak amplitude ranging 1–8 μV in the time window of the P300 (350–700 ms), and a correlated increase in fMRI signal in a network of regions including the right superior temporal and supramarginal gyri, was …

Resonant Characteristics Of Rectangular Microcantilevers Vibrating Torsionally In Viscous Liquid Media, Tao Cai, Fabien Josse, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Nicholas J. Nigro, Oliver Brand
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The resonant characteristics of rectangular microcantilevers vibrating in the torsional mode in viscous liquid media are investigated. The hydrodynamic load (torque per unit length) on the vibrating beam due to the liquid was first determined using a finite element model. An analytical expression of the hydrodynamic function in terms of the Reynolds number and aspect ratio, h/b (with thickness, h, and width, b) was then obtained by fitting the numerical results. This allowed for the resonance frequency and quality factor to be investigated as functions of both beam geometry and medium properties. Moreover, the effects of the aspect ratio on …

The work presented in this paper focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid organic/inorganic chemically sensitive layer for rapid detection and analysis of OPs in aqueous solutions using SH-SAW devices. Coated SH-SAW devices on 36° YX-LiTaO and 42.75° YX-Quartz (ST-90° X Quartz), are used to determine the optimum operating conditions for achieving rapid sensor responses with high sensitivity. Three analytes (parathion-methyl, parathion, and paraoxon), having similar molecular mass and volume, are used to evaluate the performance of the hybrid organic/inorganic coating in terms of sensor properties of interest including sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility. It is shown that the coating …

Purpose. To assess the repeatability and measurement error associated with cone density and nearest neighbor distance (NND) estimates in images of the parafoveal cone mosaic obtained with an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO).
Methods. Twenty-one participants with no known ocular pathology were recruited. Four retinal locations, approximately 0.65[degrees] eccentricity from the center of fixation, were imaged 10 times in randomized order with an AOSLO. Cone coordinates in each image were identified using an automated algorithm (with or without manual correction) from which cone density and NND were calculated. Owing to naturally occurring fixational instability, the 10 images recorded from …

Phone Lattice Reconstruction For Embedded Language Recognition In Lvcsr, Yuxiang Shan, Yan Deng, Jia Liu, Michael T. Johnson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
An increasing number of multilingual applications require language recognition (LRE) as a frontend, but desire low additional computational cost. This article demonstrates a novel architecture for embedding phone based language recognition into a large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) decoder by sharing the same decoding process but generating separate lattices. To compensate for the prior bias introduced by the pronunciation dictionary and the language model of the LVCSR decoder, three different phone lattice reconstruction algorithms are proposed. The underlying goals of these algorithms are to override pronunciation and grammar restrictions to provide richer phonetic information. All of the new algorithms …

Fertilization Effects On The Ecohydrology Of A Southern California Annual Grassland, Anthony J. Parolari, Michael L. Goulden, Rafael L. Bras
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Nitrogen limits leaf gas exchange, canopy development, and evapotranspiration in many ecosystems. In dryland ecosystems, it is unclear whether increased anthropogenic nitrogen inputs alter the widely recognized dominance of water and energy constraints on ecohydrology. We use observations from a factorial irrigation and fertilization experiment in a nitrogen-limited southern California annual grassland to explore this hypothesis. Our analysis shows growing season soil moisture and canopy-scale water vapor conductance are equivalent in control and fertilized plots. This consistency arises as fertilization-induced increases in leaf area index (LAI) are offset by reduced leaf area-based stomatal conductance, gs. We interpret this as evidence …

Modern scientific research produces data at rates that far outpace our ability to comprehend and analyze it. Such sources include medical imaging data and computer simulations, where technological advancements and spatiotemporal resolution generate increasing amounts of data from each scan or simulation. A bottleneck has developed whereby medical professionals and researchers are unable to fully use the advanced information available to them. By integrating computer science, computer graphics, artistic ability and medical expertise, scientific visualization of medical data has become a new field of study. The objective of this thesis is to develop two visualization systems that use advanced visualization, …
Reducing The Radiation Dose To Women Receiving Cardiac Ct Scans, Michael Hoppe
Reducing The Radiation Dose To Women Receiving Cardiac Ct Scans, Michael Hoppe
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This thesis aims to quantify the reduction in radiation dose deposited in glandular breast tissue achieved by using tilted gantry acquisition during cardiac CT scans. Previous work by Halpern et al. suggested using tilted acquisition parallel to the long axis of the patient’s heart. However, for a larger portion of the population this is not feasible due to the design of current scanners (which are limited to maximum tilt angles of 30 degrees). This study investigated the potential dose reduction and image quality effects at commercially available tilt angles between 0-30 degrees through simulation and experimental studies.

Abnormal Neuromuscular Fatigue And Motor Performance Of The Knee Extensors Post Stroke, Henry Kuhnen
Abnormal Neuromuscular Fatigue And Motor Performance Of The Knee Extensors Post Stroke, Henry Kuhnen
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Stroke causes paresis in leg muscles, such as the knee extensors, that significantly impairs motor control and function during tasks such as walking. Reduced endurance and increased kinematic asymmetries during walking over time indicate paretic musculature may fatigue more quickly than non-paretic musculature. The primary purpose of this study was to identify abnormalities in neuromuscular fatigue (reduction in force over time) of the paretic knee extensors and associate them with motor performance.
We investigated the effects of repeated six second isometric submaximal (30% of maximum voluntary contraction) knee extensor fatiguing contractions on task failure and motor performance in ten chronic …
Detection And Analysis Of Sludge Bulking Events Using Data Mining And Machine Learning Approach, Yuanhao Zhao
Detection And Analysis Of Sludge Bulking Events Using Data Mining And Machine Learning Approach, Yuanhao Zhao
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Sludge bulking is the most notable cause of activated sludge plant failure (i.e. exceeding discharge permit quality limits) worldwide. Numerous mathematical methods have been applied to detect and provide warning for the prevention of sludge bulking. However, these models often fail to reliably forecast sludge bulking events because they focus on the point-by-point "curve-fitting" strategy, while the number of bulking event data points is relatively small in comparison with the large amount of data in the time series. Therefore, three machine learning approaches which focus on detecting the temporal pattern data before the sludge bulking events are considered in this …
Quantifying The Impact Of Altered Hemodynamics And Vascular Biomechanics To Changes In Structure And Function In Native And Corrected Aortic Coarctation, Arjun Menon
Dissertations (1934 -)
Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is associated with substantial cardiovascular morbidities despite successful treatment through surgical or catheter-based intervention. Although specific mechanisms leading to these morbidities remain elusive, abnormal hemodynamics and vascular biomechanics are implicated. We used a novel animal model that facilitates quantification of CoA-induced hemodynamic and vascular biomechanics alterations and their impact on vascular structure and function, independent of genetic or confounding factors. Rabbits underwent thoracic CoA at 10 weeks of age (~9 human years) to induce a 20 mmHg blood pressure (BP) gradient using permanent or dissolvable suture thereby replicating untreated and corrected CoA. Computational fluid dynamics …
Anaerobic Co-Digestion For Enhanced Renewable Energy And Green House Gas Emission Reduction, Navaneethan Navaratnam
Anaerobic Co-Digestion For Enhanced Renewable Energy And Green House Gas Emission Reduction, Navaneethan Navaratnam
Dissertations (1934 -)
The need to develop renewable energy is important for replacing fossil fuel, which is limited in quantity and also tends to increase in price over time. The addition of high strength organic wastes in municipal anaerobic digesters is growing and tends to increase renewable energy production. In addition, conversion of wastes to energy significantly reduces uncontrolled greenhouse gas emissions. Co-digestion of municipal sludge with any combination of wastes can result in synergistic, antagonistic or neutral outcomes. The objectives of this study were to identify potential co-digestates, determine synergistic, antagonistic and neutral effects, determine economic benefits, quantify performance of bench scale …

To enhance the efficiency of bridge construction, the wireless real-time video monitoring system (WRITE) was developed. Utilizing the advanced technologies of computer vision and artificial neural networks, the developed system first wirelessly acquired a sequence of images of work-face operations. Then human pose analyzing algorithms processed these images in real time to generate human poses associated with construction workers who performed the operations. Next, a portion of the human poses were manually classified into three categories as effective work, contributory work, and ineffective work and were used to train the built-in artificial neural networks (ANN). Finally, the trained neural networks …
