Automated Multi-Objective Design Optimization Of Pm Ac Machines Using Computationally Efficient Fea And Differential Evolution, Gennadi Y. Sizov, Peng Zhang, Dan M. Ionel, Nabeel Demerdash, Marius Rosu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The design optimization methods described in this paper are employing an ultrafast computationally efficient finite element analysis technique. A minimum number of magnetostatic solutions are used for the analysis, which makes possible the study of thousands of candidate motor designs with typical PC-workstation computational resources. A multi-objective differential evolution algorithm that considers a large number of independent stator and rotor geometric variables and performance criteria, such as average and ripple torque, losses, and efficiency, is used. The optimization method is demonstrated on different permanent magnet (PM) ac synchronous motors in the kilowatt and megawatt power ranges. For the low-power PM …

Few-View Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (Spect) Reconstruction Based On A Blurred Piecewise Constant Object Model, Paul Arthur Wolf, Jakob S. Jørgensen, Taly Gilat Schmidt, Emil Y. Sidky

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A sparsity-exploiting algorithm intended for few-view single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) reconstruction is proposed and characterized. The algorithm models the object as piecewise constant subject to a blurring operation. To validate that the algorithm closely approximates the true object in the noiseless case, projection data were generated from an object assuming this model and using the system matrix. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to provide more realistic data of a phantom with varying smoothness across the field of view and a cardiac phantom. Reconstructions were performed across a sweep of two primary design parameters. The results demonstrate that the …

Young’S Modulus And Volume Porosity Relationships For Additive Manufacturing Applications, John Anthony Choren, Stephen M. Heinrich, M. Barbara Silver-Thorn

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Recent advancements in additive manufacturing (or rapid prototyping) technologies allow the fabrication of end-use components with defined porous structures. For example, one area of particular interest is the potential to modify the flexibility (bending stiffness) of orthopedic implants through the use of engineered porosity (i.e., design and placement of pores) and subsequent fabrication of the implant using additive manufacturing processes. However, applications of engineered porosity require the ability to accurately predict mechanical properties from knowledge or characterization of the pore structure and the existence of robust equations characterizing the property–porosity relationships. As Young’s modulus can be altered by variations in …

Evaluation Of Cast Creep Occurring During Simulated Clubfoot Correction, Tamara L. Cohen, Haluk Altiok, Mei Wang, Linda M. Mcgrady, Joseph Krzak, Adam Graf, Sergey Tarima, Peter A. Smith, Gerald F. Harris

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The Ponseti method is a widely accepted and highly successful conservative treatment of pediatric clubfoot involving weekly manipulations and cast applications. Qualitative assessments have indicated the potential success of the technique with cast materials other than standard plaster of Paris. However, guidelines for clubfoot correction based on the mechanical response of these materials have yet to be investigated. The current study sought to characterize and compare the ability of three standard cast materials to maintain the Ponseti-corrected foot position by evaluating cast creep response. A dynamic cast testing device, built to model clubfoot correction, was wrapped in plaster of Paris, …

The adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) allows visualization of microscopic structures of the human retina in vivo. In this work, we demonstrate its application in combination with oral and intravenous (IV) fluorescein angiography (FA) to the in vivo visualization of the human retinal microvasculature. Ten healthy subjects ages 20 to 38 years were imaged using oral (7 and/or 20 mg/kg) and/or IV (500 mg) fluorescein. In agreement with current literature, there were no adverse effects among the patients receiving oral fluorescein while one patient receiving IV fluorescein experienced some nausea and heaving. We determined that all retinal capillary …

Methods:

The authors simulated CT images of an anthropomorphic female thorax phantom for a 120 kV reference protocol and five “dose reduction” protocols intended to reduce dose to the breast: 120 kV partial angle (posteriorly centered), 120 kV tube-current modulated (TCM), 120 kV with shielded breasts, 80 kV, and 80 kV partial angle (posteriorly centered). Two image quality tasks were investigated: the detection and localization of 4-mm, 3.25 mg/ml and …

An Efficient Cost Function For The Optimization Of An N-Layered Isotropic Cloaked Cylinder, Jason V. Paul, Peter J. Collins, Ronald A. Coutu Jr. Jul 2013

An Efficient Cost Function For The Optimization Of An N-Layered Isotropic Cloaked Cylinder, Jason V. Paul, Peter J. Collins, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we present an efficient cost function for optimizing n-layered isotropic cloaked cylinders. Cost function efficiency is achieved by extracting the expression for the angle independent scatterer contribution of an associated Green's function. Therefore, since this cost function is not a function of angle, accounting for every bistatic angle is not necessary and thus more efficient than other cost functions. With this general and efficient cost function, isotropic cloaked cylinders can be optimized for many layers and material parameters. To demonstrate this, optimized cloaked cylinders made of 10, 20 and 30 equal thickness layers are presented for …

Rnn Language Model With Word Clustering And Class-Based Output Layer, Yongzhe Shi, Wei-Qiang Zhang, Jia Liu, Michael T. Johnson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The recurrent neural network language model (RNNLM) has shown significant promise for statistical language modeling. In this work, a new class-based output layer method is introduced to further improve the RNNLM. In this method, word class information is incorporated into the output layer by utilizing the Brown clustering algorithm to estimate a class-based language model. Experimental results show that the new output layer with word clustering not only improves the convergence obviously but also reduces the perplexity and word error rate in large vocabulary continuous speech recognition.

A Multi-Scale Approach To A Greater Understanding Of The Behavior Of Heterogeneous Materials Under Dynamic Loading, Andrew J. Van Vooren Jul 2013

A Multi-Scale Approach To A Greater Understanding Of The Behavior Of Heterogeneous Materials Under Dynamic Loading, Andrew J. Van Vooren

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The penetration of granular materials is of interest to a variety of different fields, and is an active area of research. The objective of this project is to gain understanding of the dynamics of a projectile penetrating into a granular material. To do this, experiments were run and a numerical model was created.

A dart gun was used to accelerate an aluminum dart to velocities around 100 m/s, which then impacted a target tank filled with Ottawa sand. The dart flew along a view window, which allowed for a recording of the penetration event using a high speed camera. Pressure …

Dynamic Modeling Of A Belt Driven Electromechanical Xy Plotter Cutter, Joseph V. Prisco Jul 2013

Dynamic Modeling Of A Belt Driven Electromechanical Xy Plotter Cutter, Joseph V. Prisco

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Current industrial XY plotter cutters that use a belt driven gantry for the X motion and media feed for the Y motion sometimes have performance issues in cutting out high quality shapes. Mathematical models for these plotter cutters are not publicly available and thus the parameters critical to cut quality are not well understood. This thesis develops a dynamic, electromechanical model for the gantry arm and media feed using first principles and a non-linear friction model. These models are independently simulated and experimentally verified. In order to verify the effectiveness of the individual models, they are combined with a control …

The Effects Of Separating Visual And Motor Workspaces On The Generalization Of Visuomotor Adaptation Across Movement Conditions, Yuming Lei Jul 2013

The Effects Of Separating Visual And Motor Workspaces On The Generalization Of Visuomotor Adaptation Across Movement Conditions, Yuming Lei

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Separating visual and proprioceptive information in terms of workspace locations during reaching movement has been shown to disturb transfer of visuomotor adaptation across the arms. Here, we investigated whether separating visual and motor workspaces would also disturb generalization of visuomotor adaptation across movement conditions within the same arm. In our behavioral study, subjects were divided into four experimental groups (plus three control groups). The first two groups adapted to a visual rotation under a "dissociation" condition in which the targets for reaching movement were presented in midline while their arm performed reaching movement laterally. Following that, they were tested in …

Simulation Of Power Control Of A Wind Turbine Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator System, Nantao Huang Jul 2013

Simulation Of Power Control Of A Wind Turbine Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator System, Nantao Huang

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents a control system for a 2MW direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbine system with the objectives to capture the optimal power from the wind and ensure a maximum efficiency for this system. Moreover, in order to eliminate the electrical speed sensor mounted on the rotor shaft of the PMSG to reduce the system hardware complexity and improve the reliability of the system, a sliding mode observer based PM rotor position and speed sensorless control algorithm is presented here.

The mathematical models for the wind turbine and the permanent magnet synchronous machine are first given in this …

Chemically Sensitive Polymer Coatings For Sh-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors For The Detection Of Benzene In Water, Robert Lenisa Jul 2013

Chemically Sensitive Polymer Coatings For Sh-Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors For The Detection Of Benzene In Water, Robert Lenisa

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Polymer-coated shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensors are investigated for the detection of benzene in aqueous samples. The SH-SAW sensors using three-layer geometry have a single polymer sensing layer which absorbs the analyte and interacts with the surface wave. Several polymers are identified as potential improvements over current sensing films based on glass transition temperature and Hildebrand solubility parameter. The polymers investigated in this work include poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly (butyl acrylate) (PBA), poly (ethylene co-vinyl acetate) (PEVA), bisphenol-A poly (dimethylsiloxane) (BPA PDMS), and bisphenol-A poly (hexamethyltrisiloxane) (BPA HMTS).

The polymers are spin coated on a lithium tantalate …

Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop Jul 2013

Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In an electromagnetic scattering problem, an incoming electromagnetic wave interacts with an object. The object is typically located in some medium, such as free space. When this electromagnetic wave becomes incident upon the object, the wave scatters. The goal of this work is to analyze the scattered fields for three different incoming wave types: a plane wave, a monopole line source, and a multipole line source. Each source is incident on an infinitely long circular cylinder of lossless dielectric material. Each source has a unique scattering characteristic.

The volume equivalence principle is used to replace the object geometry with mathematically …

An Fmri Study On Supra-Spinal Contributions To Upper And Lower Limb Motor Control, Shancheng Bao Jul 2013

An Fmri Study On Supra-Spinal Contributions To Upper And Lower Limb Motor Control, Shancheng Bao

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The differences in the neural mechanisms contributing to upper and lower extremity movement have not been fully elucidated, and this might be a factor that leads to the ineffectiveness of rehabilitation techniques for most stroke survivors. It is unclear whether therapies designed for upper extremities should also be used for the lower extremities, and vice versa. In this study, fMRI was used to examine the supraspinal control of UE and LE movement in both neurologically intact individuals and people with post-stroke hemiparesis. We compared the location, volume, and intensity of brain activity associated with upper and lower extremity pedaling and …

Flame Temperature Imaging Of A Low Nox Burner Via Laser Rayleigh Scattering, Nicholas A. Smith Jul 2013

Flame Temperature Imaging Of A Low Nox Burner Via Laser Rayleigh Scattering, Nicholas A. Smith

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Federal and global legislation are requiring increasingly stringent emission regulation on household appliances and in particular water heater burners. Emissions like NOx (NO and NO2) are a growing concern due to their adverse health effects and contribution to tropospheric ozone, acid rain, and smog formation. As NOx is more closely controlled, appliance manufacturers are developing low emission burners for use in water heaters.

Flame temperature is strongly correlated to NOx production. Hence, characterizing flame temperatures in new burners is a key part of improving upon burners used today and the development of future burners. Temperature measurements applied to a new, …

Miniature, High Efficiency Transducers For Use In Ultrasonic Flow Meters, Meghna Saikia Jul 2013

Miniature, High Efficiency Transducers For Use In Ultrasonic Flow Meters, Meghna Saikia

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis is concerned with the development of a new type of miniature, high efficiency transducer for use in ultrasonic flow meters. The proposed transducer consists of a thin plate of a suitable piezoelectric material on which an inter-digital transducer is fabricated for the generation and detection of plate acoustic waves. When immersed in a fluid medium, this device can convert energy from plate acoustic waves (PAWs) into bulk acoustic waves (BAWs) and vice versa. It is shown that this mode coupling principle can be used to realize efficient transducers for use in ultrasonic flow meters. This transducer can be …

Hip Proprioceptors Preferentially Modulate Reflexes Of The Leg In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Tanya Onushko, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Brian D. Schmit Jul 2013

Hip Proprioceptors Preferentially Modulate Reflexes Of The Leg In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Tanya Onushko, Allison S. Hyngstrom, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Stretch-sensitive afferent feedback from hip muscles has been shown to trigger long-lasting, multijoint reflex responses in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). These reflexes could have important implications for control of leg movements during functional activities, such as walking. Because the control of leg movement relies on reflex regulation at all joints of the limb, we sought to determine whether stretch of hip muscles modulates reflex activity at the knee and ankle and, conversely, whether knee and ankle stretch afferents affect hip-triggered reflexes. A custom-built servomotor apparatus was used to stretch the hip muscles in nine chronic SCI subjects …

Optical Imaging Of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Oxidative Stress In Acute Lung Injury From Hyperoxia And Sepsis, Reyhaneh Sepehr, Said H. Audi, Sepideh Maleki, Kevin Staniszewski, Annie L. Eis, Girija G. Konduri, Mahsa Ranji Jul 2013

Optical Imaging Of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Oxidative Stress In Acute Lung Injury From Hyperoxia And Sepsis, Reyhaneh Sepehr, Said H. Audi, Sepideh Maleki, Kevin Staniszewski, Annie L. Eis, Girija G. Konduri, Mahsa Ranji

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many acute and chronic pulmonary disorders such as acute lung injury (ALI) in adults and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants. Bacterial infection and oxygen toxicity, which result in pulmonary vascular endothelial injury, contribute to impaired vascular growth and alveolar simplification seen in the lungs of premature infants with BPD. Hyperoxia induces ALI, reduces cell proliferation, causes DNA damage and promotes cell death by causing mitochondrial dysfunction. The objective of this study was to use an optical imaging technique to evaluate the variations in fluorescence intensities of the auto-fluorescent …

Triclosan Enriches For Dehalococcoides-Like Chloroflexi In Anaerobic Soil At Environmentally Relevant Concentrations, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Mark J. Krzmarzick Jul 2013

Triclosan Enriches For Dehalococcoides-Like Chloroflexi In Anaerobic Soil At Environmentally Relevant Concentrations, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Mark J. Krzmarzick

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent that is discharged to soils with land-applied wastewater biosolids, is persistent under anaerobic conditions, and yet its impact on anaerobic microbial communities in soils is largely unknown. We hypothesized that triclosan enriches for Dehalococcoides-like Chloroflexi because these bacteria respire organochlorides and are likely less sensitive, relative to other bacteria, to the antimicrobial effects of triclosan. Triplicate anaerobic soil microcosms were seeded with agricultural soil, which was not previously exposed to triclosan, and were amended with 1 mg kg−1 of triclosan. Triplicate control microcosms did not receive triclosan, and the experiment was run for …

Resonant Characteristics Of Rectangular Hammerhead Microcantilevers Vibrating Laterally In Viscous Liquid Media, Jinjin Zhang, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Nicholas J. Nigro, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand Jul 2013

Resonant Characteristics Of Rectangular Hammerhead Microcantilevers Vibrating Laterally In Viscous Liquid Media, Jinjin Zhang, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Nicholas J. Nigro, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The resonant characteristics of laterally vibrating rectangular hammerhead microcantilevers in viscous liquid media are investigated. The rectangular hammerhead microcantilever is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam (stem) and a rigid body (head). A modified semi-analytical expression for the hydrodynamic function in terms of the Reynolds number, Re, and aspect ratio, h/b, is proposed to rapidly evaluate the sensing characteristics. Using this expression, the resonance frequency, quality factor and normalized surface mass sensitivity are investigated as a function of the dimensions of the microcantilever and liquid properties. Guidelines for design of hammerhead microcantilever geometry are proposed to achieve efficient sensing platforms for …

Developing A Model To Enhance Labor Productivity Using Bridge Construction Benchmark Data, Seonghoon Kim, Yong Bai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The Labor Working Status Monitoring (LWSM) Model that incorporates the WRITE and the industry benchmark data was developed through the five steps to enhance labor productivity in bridge construction operations. The first step of the development process was to conduct a literature review, followed by the second step which was to develop the WRITE. During the development, the authors identified the necessary hardware and software for the WRITE and outlined a schematic to show the connection of major hardware components. The third step was to develop the LWSM Model for monitoring the on-site construction labor working status by comparing data …

Robust And Resilient Finite-Time Bounded Control Of Discrete-Time Uncertain Nonlinear Systems, Mohammad N. Elbsat, Edwin E. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Finite-time state-feedback stabilization is addressed for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems with conic-type nonlinearities, bounded feedback control gain perturbations, and additive disturbances. First, conditions for the existence of a robust and resilient linear state-feedback controller for this class of systems are derived. Then, using linear matrix inequality techniques, a solution for the controller gain and the maximum allowable bound on the gain perturbation is obtained. The developed controller is robust for all unknown nonlinearities lying in a known hypersphere with an uncertain center and all admissible disturbances. Moreover, it is resilient against any bounded perturbations that may alter the …

Dual-Carrier High-Gain Low-Noise Superlattice Avalanche Photodiodes, Jun Huang, Koushik Banerjee, Siddhartha Ghosh, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, novel avalanche photodiode structures with alternate carrier multiplication nanometer regions, placed next to a wider electron multiplication region, to create dual-carrier feedback systems, are proposed. Gain and excess noise factor of these structures are calculated based on the dead space multiplication theory under uniform electric field. In addition, the equivalent impact ionization ratios are derived and compared. It is observed that the proposed structures can generate much higher gain compared with conventional pure electron multiplication structures under the same electric field without severely degrading the excess noise quality. Excess noise is further optimized with careful adjustment of …

Distributed Multichannel Speech Enhancement Based On Perceptually-Motivated Bayesian Estimators Of The Spectral Amplitude, Marek B. Trawicki, Michael T. Johnson Jun 2013

Distributed Multichannel Speech Enhancement Based On Perceptually-Motivated Bayesian Estimators Of The Spectral Amplitude, Marek B. Trawicki, Michael T. Johnson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this study, the authors propose multichannel weighted Euclidean (WE) and weighted cosh (WCOSH) cost function estimators for speech enhancement in the distributed microphone scenario. The goal of the work is to illustrate the advantages of utilising additional microphones and modified cost functions for improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and segmental SNR (SSNR) along with log-likelihood ratio (LLR) and perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) objective metrics over the corresponding single-channel baseline estimators. As with their single-channel counterparts, the perceptually-motivated multichannel WE and WCOSH estimators are functions of a weighting law parameter, which influences attention of the noisy spectral amplitude through …

Extra-Matrix Mg2+ Limits Ca2+ Uptake And Modulates Ca2+ Uptake-Independent Respiration And Redox State In Cardiac Isolated Mitochondria, Age D. Boelens, Ranjan K. Pradhan, Christoph A. Blomeyer, Amadou K.S. Camara, Ranjan K. Dash, David F. Stowe Jun 2013

Extra-Matrix Mg2+ Limits Ca2+ Uptake And Modulates Ca2+ Uptake-Independent Respiration And Redox State In Cardiac Isolated Mitochondria, Age D. Boelens, Ranjan K. Pradhan, Christoph A. Blomeyer, Amadou K.S. Camara, Ranjan K. Dash, David F. Stowe

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Cardiac mitochondrial matrix (m) free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]m) increases primarily by Ca2+ uptake through the Ca2+ uniporter (CU). Ca2+ uptake via the CU is attenuated by extra-matrix (e) Mg2+ ([Mg2+]e). How [Ca2+]m is dynamically modulated by interacting physiological levels of [Ca2+]e and [Mg2+]e and how this interaction alters bioenergetics are not well understood. We postulated that as [Mg2+]e modulates Ca2+ uptake via the CU, it also alters bioenergetics in a matrix Ca2+–induced and …

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

One feature of the amino acid sequence of P2X receptors identified from mammalian species, Xenopus laevis and zebrafish is the conservation of ten cysteines in the extracellular loop. Little information is available about the role of these conserved ectodomain cysteines in the function of P2X receptors. Here, we investigated the possibility that ten conserved cysteine residues in the extracellular loop of the rat P2X4 receptor may regulate zinc potentiation of the receptor using a series of individual cysteine to alanine point mutations and functional characterization of recombinant receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes. For the C116A, C132A, C159A, C165A, C217A and …
