Vibration Control In High-Rise Buildings For Multi-Hazard, Srinivasa Adithya Sailesh Abburu Jan 2015

Vibration Control In High-Rise Buildings For Multi-Hazard, Srinivasa Adithya Sailesh Abburu

LSU Master's Theses

Increasing population and migration of people to cities has led to the construction of high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings have received a renewed interest in many city business locations, where land is scarce, as per their economic, sustainability and other benefits. Taller and taller towers are being built everywhere in the world. However, the increased frequency of multi-hazard disasters makes it challenging to balance between a resilient and sustainable construction. As a saying, ‘with new inventions come new problems’. High-rise buildings usually have issues with increased wind loads brought by, for instance, hurricanes, which can decrease their serviceability and cause failure …

Modelling Of Channelization In Unconsolidated Formations Due To Liquid Injection, Juan Felipe Bautista Barake Jan 2015

Modelling Of Channelization In Unconsolidated Formations Due To Liquid Injection, Juan Felipe Bautista Barake

LSU Master's Theses

Fluid injection has been increasingly implemented in oil and gas producing fields to optimize hydrocarbon production in both young and mature oil fields across the globe. This situation arises from the realization that early planning of second and tertiary recovery methods may improve project economics significantly. Injectors are then intended to perform at high injection rates with low bottomhole flowing pressures for as long as possible. In the case of injectors drilled in unconsolidated formations, deficient performance often times seems to be the norm. With a majority of these fields being offshore developments in which capital expenditures are high, a …

Sinking Of Crude Oil Amended-Model Oil Mixtures Due To Evaporative Or Dissolution Weathering On The Surface And Submerged In Water, Cameron Joseph Loebig Jan 2015

Sinking Of Crude Oil Amended-Model Oil Mixtures Due To Evaporative Or Dissolution Weathering On The Surface And Submerged In Water, Cameron Joseph Loebig

LSU Master's Theses

Despite the popular belief that crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that floats on the surface of water, tar balls continue to wash up on beaches from the sea floor years after the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. This is because of the rarely studied weathering effects that occur during deep sea spills. While the evaporative weathering process of oil at the water’s surface has been studied, no currently implemented models assess the weathering effects of dissolution within the water column. The evaporative effects at the sea surface and the dissolution of soluble components within droplets located in the …

Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Tel1 & Tel2 Role In Dna Double-Strand Break Repairs, Tommy Nhan Trieu Jan 2015

Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Tel1 & Tel2 Role In Dna Double-Strand Break Repairs, Tommy Nhan Trieu

LSU Master's Theses

Genomic DNA is constantly in danger of being damaged by endogenous cellular processes and exogenous agents. Eukaryotes have mechanisms, collectively termed the DNA damage response, that detect and repair DNA damage. After a double-stranded break occurs, protein complexes are recruited to the break site to promote resection. Two main protein kinases involved in DNA repair are the Tel1 and Mec1 proteins. Recent studies have found that the Tel2 protein binds to both the Tel1 and Mec1 proteins and a point mutation of TEL2 on the 129th amino acid disrupts this interaction. Since both of the Tel1 and Mec1 proteins are …

Laboratory Experimental Demonstration Of The Effect Of Oceanic Whitecaps In The Transport Of Oil And Dispersant Components To The Atmosphere, Paria Avij

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During the DWH oil spill, vast quantities of crude oil were released into the sea-surface environment of the Gulf of Mexico. There has been ample research focused on the transport of oil into the different environmental sections. Evaporation has been considered to be the only transport pathway of oil spill matter into the atmosphere. However, the aerosolization of oil and dispersant via bursting bubbles as they occur in whitecaps and breaking waves has not been considered in the oil and dispersant budget calculation. This transport vector is significant as it is the dominant source of particulate matter production in the …

On The Role Of Surface Roughness In Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Of Tribological Components, Mohammad Masjedi Jan 2015

On The Role Of Surface Roughness In Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Of Tribological Components, Mohammad Masjedi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The present dissertation investigates the effect of surface roughness in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). Since many essential components of the machinery such as gears, rolling element bearings, cam-followers, and heavily loaded journal bearings operate under the mixed EHL condition, and given the fact that nearly all engineering surfaces are rough to some extent, there is a need for an extensive research which can realistically quantify the effect of the surface roughness in such applications. We thus seek to develop an applied engineering approach for the treatment of the mixed EHL for prediction of the performance of machinery. Both line-contact and …

In this dissertation, a custom designed and constructed ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) vapor phase deposition system was used for the preparation of ceramic thin films through low-pressure high-density plasma assisted physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods. Deposited thin films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), …

Analyses Of The Mec1 Dna Damage Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Barrett Ainsworth Jan 2015

Analyses Of The Mec1 Dna Damage Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Barrett Ainsworth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Eukaryotic organisms implement conserved surveillance machinery to sense and respond to DNA damage. Fundamental to the repair process is coordinated regulation of repair genes and initiation of cell cycle arrest protocols. Failure to preserve these checkpoints results in accumulation of mutated DNA and aberrant cell phenotypes that are characteristic of human disease. The yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, utilizes the MEC1 checkpoint pathway to regulate the DNA damage response. This study addressed two overarching themes of transcriptional and post-translational regulation within the MEC1 pathway. We first applied our understanding of the MEC1 DNA damage transcriptional response to develop advanced luciferase whole cell …

New Identification And Decoding Techniques For Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, Tian Xia Jan 2015

New Identification And Decoding Techniques For Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, Tian Xia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Error-correction coding schemes are indispensable for high-capacity high data-rate communication systems nowadays. Among various channel coding schemes, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes introduced by pioneer Robert G. Gallager are prominent due to the capacity-approaching and superior error-correcting properties. There is no hard constraint on the code rate of LDPC codes. Consequently, it is ideal to incorporate LDPC codes with various code rate and codeword length in the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) systems which change the encoder and the modulator adaptively to improve the system throughput. In conventional AMC systems, a dedicated control channel is assigned to coordinate the encoder/decoder changes. …

Aqueous Atmospheric Species, A Dual Study: 1. Comparison Of The Effects Of Temperature, Oxygen Level, Ionic Strength, And Ph On The Reaction Of Benzene With Hydroxyl Radicals At The Air-Water Interface To The Bulk Aqueous Phase. 2. Determination Of Carbonyl Compounds In Fog Water Samples Via Online Concentration And Hplc, Aubrey Anne Heath

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The air-water interface is the largest interface in the environment. Atmospheric droplets, such as fog, which can have an exceptionally high surface area-to-volume ratio, also have a large range of physical and chemical properties (e.g. temperature, pH, ionic strength, and chemical composition) based on location, time of day, and emission source. Unlike larger atmospheric droplets, which are predominately characterized by bulk aqueous phase conditions, reactions that take place in fog droplets are determined by both the bulk-aqueous phase and the air-water interface due to a high surface area-to-volume ratio. In order to have a greater understanding of atmospheric processes and …

Context Aware Textual Entailment, Soha Arab-Khazaeli Jan 2015

Context Aware Textual Entailment, Soha Arab-Khazaeli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In conversations, stories, news reporting, and other forms of natural language, understanding requires participants to make assumptions (hypothesis) based on background knowledge, a process called entailment. These assumptions may then be supported, contradicted, or refined as a conversation or story progresses and additional facts become known and context changes. It is often the case that we do not know an aspect of the story with certainty but rather believe it to be the case; i.e., what we know is associated with uncertainty or ambiguity. In this research a method has been developed to identify different contexts of the input raw …

Coupled Gradient Enhanced Damage - Viscoplasticity Model Using Phase Field Method, Navid Mozaffari Jan 2015

Coupled Gradient Enhanced Damage - Viscoplasticity Model Using Phase Field Method, Navid Mozaffari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is developing a framework to describe damage evolution as a phase transformation in solid materials and couple it to the well-known Perzyna type viscoplastic model to account for inelastic behavior of ductile materials. To accomplish this task, the following steps have been performed. First, a new nonlocal, gradient based damage model is proposed for isotropic elastic damage using the phase field method in order to show the evolution of damage in brittle materials. The general framework of the phase field model (PFM) is discussed and the order parameter is related to the damage variable in …
