Adhesives From Biomass Pyrolysis, Dongbing Li, Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens Jun 2016

Adhesives From Biomass Pyrolysis, Dongbing Li, Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

Fast pyrolysis of waste biomass with high lignin content, such as birch wood, birch bark, hydrolysis lignin, kraft lignin or low-cost digestate from biogas production, provides oils that can be substituted for phenol in phenol-formaldehyde resins. Biomass fast pyrolysis was performed in a dedicated fluidized bed pyrolyzer that incorporated two crucial innovations: a fractional condensation train provided dry bio-oils with ~1% of moisture and much reduced acidity; autothermal pyrolysis with partial oxidation reduces operating and capital costs, as well as increasing the quality of the dry bio-oil. Dry bio-oil obtained from autothermal fast pyrolysis of kraft lignin can be used …

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

1. INTRODUCTION

Biodiesel is a mixture of alkyl esters obtained by transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats with a short chain alcohol (mainly methanol or ethanol) and catalyzed by acids or bases (usually NaOH or KOH) [1]. Final properties of the biodiesel are similar to those of petroleum derived-diesel. Therefore, biodiesel can be used in diesel conventional engines without significant modifications or mixed in any proportion with fossil diesel.

Some of the main drawbacks of biodiesel to be used as fuel are the low oxidation stability and poor cold flow properties (freezing point and flowability of the …

Process For Removal And Recovery Of Phenolic Compounds From Switchgrass, Robert M. Counce, Nikki Labbé, Michelle L. Lehmann, Jack S. Watson, Jingming Tao

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

Introduction

This paper describes a process for the separation and recovery of non-structural phenolic compounds from switchgrass. This process is proposed as a preliminary step of a biorefinery incorporating the organosolv process for biomass fractionation. The economics of such an addition to separate and recover phenolic compounds is then investigated.

Switchgrass has been selected as a dedicated feedstock for bioprocesses producing liquid fuels such as ethanol and advanced fuels. The University of Tennessee has been heavily involved in the development of switchgrass as one of the feedstocks for bioenergy production in the southeast (Tiller 2011). Biofuels have the potential to …

Fundamental Study And Applications To Biomass Pyrolysis Of The Mechanically Fluidized Reactor, Valentina Lago, Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens

5th International Congress on Green Process Engineering (GPE 2016)

Lignin has great potential for the production of aromatics currently derived from petroleum, since it is the most abundant source of aromatics in nature. At present, Kraft lignin is used as fuel within the pulping process but, alternatively, it could be converted to high-value chemicals using thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis. Kraft lignin, however, is a very cohesive and thermally sensitive powder with foaming and agglomerating tendency under reaction conditions. Consequently, a novel reactor design, designated as Mechanically Fluidized Reactor (MFR) has been developed to successfully process Kraft lignin.

Improving Global Human Health Through Norovirus Virus-Like Particle Manufacturing, Scot Shepard Jun 2016

Improving Global Human Health Through Norovirus Virus-Like Particle Manufacturing, Scot Shepard

Vaccine Technology VI

Norovirus infection is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the U.S., estimated to afflict 21 million people per year. For scale-up manufacturing of a norovirus vaccine candidate, the baculovirus expression system has been used in 1000 L working volume stirred-tank bioreactors for production of two distinct norovirus virus-like particles (VLP). Downstream processing using methods for enveloped virus inactivation and a series of orthogonal chromatography steps results in norovirus VLP that contain low residual levels of host-cell protein, host cell and baculovirus DNA, and are free of replicating baculovirus. Emphasis has been placed on employing single-use technologies including disposable …

Determining Whether Adsorption State Is A Critical Attribute In Aluminum Adjuvanted Vaccines, Garry Morefield Jun 2016

Determining Whether Adsorption State Is A Critical Attribute In Aluminum Adjuvanted Vaccines, Garry Morefield

Vaccine Technology VI

Aluminum based adjuvants have a long history of safe and effective use in vaccine products. When developing vaccine formulations incorporating aluminum adjuvants it is important to understand whether adsorption state is a critical attribute of the vaccine. Investigations initiate with obtaining an understanding of how the antigen of interest interacts with aluminum adjuvant surfaces. The balance of attractive versus repulsive interaction forces (including electrostatic, ligand exchange, and hydrophobic interactions) determines the resulting adsorption state of the antigen. Once the interaction of aluminum adjuvant and antigen is understood, formulations can be prepared along the spectrum of aluminum adjuvant surfaces to obtain …

Controlled, Pulsatile Release Of Thermostabilized Inactivated Polio Vaccine From Plga-Based Microspheres, Stephany Y. Tzeng, Rohiverth Guarecuco, Kevin J. Mchugh, Evan M. Rosenberg, Yingying Zeng, Robert Langer, Ana Jaklenec Jun 2016

Controlled, Pulsatile Release Of Thermostabilized Inactivated Polio Vaccine From Plga-Based Microspheres, Stephany Y. Tzeng, Rohiverth Guarecuco, Kevin J. Mchugh, Evan M. Rosenberg, Yingying Zeng, Robert Langer, Ana Jaklenec

Vaccine Technology VI

Many vaccines, such as the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), must be administered in several doses for full efficacy. Because patient access is a major challenge for vaccination efforts in developing countries, administering multiple doses per patient is impractical in those areas. Single-administration vaccines would greatly improve efforts to vaccinate populations in Third World countries, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Expanded Program for Immunization describes an ideal vaccine as one that is heat-stable, requires only one shot, and is easy to administer. Although already existing technologies, such as microspheres composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), are able to encapsulate …

Development Of Typhax, A Salmonella Typhi Vi Polysaccharide Protein Capsular Matrix Vaccine, Kevin P. Killeen

Vaccine Technology VI

Matrivax Research & Development Corporation is researching and developing a novel technology termed Protein Capsular Matrix Vaccine (PCMV) as an alternative to polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccines. In a PCMV, polysaccharide antigens are entrapped in a cross-linked protein ‘carrier’ matrix. This process is simpler than conjugate vaccines and should yield polysaccharide vaccines that elicit TH-cell ‘memory’, are highly efficacious, and less expensive to manufacture.

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, is a disease that afflicts ~16 million people worldwide, resulting in 600,000 deaths, annually. Although typhoid fever vaccines are commercially available, there are significant limitations. Ty21a is an …

Characterization Of Ha And Na-Containing Vlps Produced In Suspension Cultures Of Hek 293 Cells, Amine Kamen, Alina Venereo-Sanchez, Rénald Gilbert, Aziza Manceur, Parminder Chahal, Sven Ansorge, Wangxue Chen

Vaccine Technology VI

Virus like particles (VLPs) can be formulated into promising vaccines to prevent influenza infection. In addition of having a structure and composition that mimic the wild type virus, VLPs are safe since they are devoid of viral genes and consequently are not infectious. One approach to scale up the manufacturing of VLPs is to produce them in a serum-free suspension culture using a stable mammalian cell line. Importantly, with VLPs synthetized by mammalian cells, the post-translational modifications of the surface antigens should be similar to the wild type virus, and therefore should trigger a potent and specific immune response for …

Vaccine Technology VI

The Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis in developed countries and an emerging pathogen in adults. A neonatal infection occurs predominantly during the delivery by either inhalation or ingestion of contaminated secretions of the mother’s vagina. Maternal screening by rectovaginal GBS colonization at 35–37 weeks of gestation, with subsequent intra-partum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) at the onset of labor, is implemented in some countries to prevent newborn invasive by GBS. Currently, there are not vaccines to prevent the devastating consequences of GBS and a glycoconjugate vaccine is under clinical experimentation (Clinical Trials Phase III). …

Production Of A Nanoplasmid™ With A Large Gene Insert Using The Hypergro™ Fermentation Process, Aaron Carnes, Neha Tiwari, Jill Beilowitz, Carlos Sampson, Dorothy Peterson, Jim Williams

Vaccine Technology VI

Plasmid based DNA vaccines are emerging as a promising alternative to traditional vaccines due to several advantages, including faster production of DNA plasmids using E. coli. However, further increases in transgene expression are needed to meet efficacy requirements for various non-viral gene therapy and DNA vaccination applications. While existing minicircle DNA technology has been shown to offer improved levels and durations of transgene expression by removal of the bacterial region from the plasmid, low manufacturing yields may be a barrier to widespread use of minicircle DNA for vaccination.

NTC’s minimalized Nanoplasmid™ vectors utilize RNA-OUT (ROUT) antibiotic-free selection …

The Challenges Of Nuclear Waste Management From A Life Cycle Perspective, Andrea Paulillo, Stephen Palethorpe, Andrew M. Illiken, Roland Vclift, Paola Lettieri

Life Cycle Assessment and Other Assessment Tools for Waste Management and Resource Optimization

As nuclear industry grows and expands, the yearly amount of waste produced increases and it adds to the large quantity of nuclear wastes generated, and not yet disposed, in the last 50 years from existing plants. Consequently, the development of an international agreed policy to manage nuclear wastes is key to support such growth. Many countries, such as USA, Sweden, Canada, have opted for a direct disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) (Open Cycle); whilst others, such as the UK, Japan and France, have preferred reprocessing SNF (Closed Cycle). Other countries are yet to take a final decision (e.g. Spain, …

Lca Applied To Residual Organic Fertilizing Materials ‐ An Overview Of Substitution Methodological Options And Quantitative Substitution Rates, Marilys Pradel, Claire Déchaux

Life Cycle Assessment and Other Assessment Tools for Waste Management and Resource Optimization

LCA case studies applied to waste management options of organic products face several LCA methodological choices and among them, the multifunctionality question. Indeed, studies dealing with waste management aim to assess the environmental impacts of different organic waste treatments that enhance the organic waste fertilizing and amending properties. This is expressed in LCA studies by a primary function (to treat the waste) and secondary functions (to fertilize or provide an organic amendment to agricultural soils). The induced multifunctionality is often treated by system expansion by subtracting the secondary functions, leading to potentially avoided impacts. When dealing with residual organic fertilizing materials, …

Lca Applied To Residual Organic Fertilizing Materials ‐ An Overview Of Emission Inventory Data At The Spreading Operation, Claire Déchaux, Marilys Pradel

Life Cycle Assessment and Other Assessment Tools for Waste Management and Resource Optimization

LCA case studies applied to waste management options of organic products face several inventory completeness issues and among them, the spreading operation emissions. Indeed, organic products contain nutrient elements which turn into air, water and soil emissions after their spreading. LCA practitioners need to consider these quantitative data in order to carry out relevant assessments. Emission data obtained from experimental measurements, as they are specific to each residual organic fertilizing material and each pedoclimatic condition, cannot be used as generic data. Moreover, when the LCA case study is processed based on the primary function “to treat the waste”, the secondary …
