Evaluation Of Transient Refrigerant Migration Modeling Approach On Automotive Air Conditioning Systems, Bin Li, Steffen Peuker, Pega Hrnjak, Andrew Alleyne
Evaluation Of Transient Refrigerant Migration Modeling Approach On Automotive Air Conditioning Systems, Bin Li, Steffen Peuker, Pega Hrnjak, Andrew Alleyne
Mechanical Engineering
Automotive air conditioning systems are subject to constantly changing operation conditions and steady state simulations are not sufficient to describe the actual performance. The refrigerant mass migration during transient events such as clutch-cycling or start-up bas a direct impact on the transient performance. It is therefore necessary to develop simulation tools which can accurately predict the migration of the rerrigerant mass. To this end a dynamic model of an automotive air conditioning system is presented in this paper using a switched modeling framework. Model validation against experimental results demonstrates that the developed modeling approach is able to describe the transient …

Digital Control Of Parallel-Connected Dc-Dc Converters, Taufik, Daniel Forbes, Dale Dolan, Ratna Ika Putri
Electrical Engineering
This paper presents a digitally-controlled paralleled DC-DC converter. The main objective of the digital control is to achieve load sharing while operating at close to peak efficiency over an extremely wide load range. Results from computer simulations using Simulink show the digital control could indeed accomplish the objectives, but the improvements over a single converter depend on the original efficiency characteristics of the converters. An application for a high-power electric vehicle charger utilizing this converter setup is considered.

Civil and Environmental Engineering
A field investigation was carried out to retest liquefaction and nonliquefaction sites from the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake in China. These sites were carefully investigated in 1978/1979 using standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT) equipment, however the CPT measurements are obsolete because of the now nonstandard cone that was used at the time. In 2007 a modern cone was mobilized to retest 18 select sites that are particularly valuable because; of the intense ground shaking, high fines content, and/or the site did. Of the sites reinvestigated and carefully processed, 13 are considered accurate representative case histories. Two of …

The most significant additions are an automated slide that transfers packages from …
Design And Development Of Two Test Fixtures To Test The Longitudinal And Transverse Tensile Properties Of Small Diameter Tubular Polymers, Carolyn Berry
Master's Theses
Hundreds of thousands of vascular bypass grafts are implanted in the United States every year, but there has yet to be an ideal graft material to substitute for one’s own autologous vessel. Many synthetic materials have been shown to be successful vessel replacements; however, none have been proven to exhibit the same mechanical properties as native vessels, one of the most important criteria in selecting a vascular graft material. Part of this issue is due to the fact that, currently, there is no “gold standard” for testing the longitudinal and transverse tensile properties of small diameter tubular materials. While there …
Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong
Conical Probe Calibration And Wind Tunnel Data Analysis Of The Channeled Centerbody Inlet Experiment, Samson Siu Truong
Aerospace Engineering
For a multi-hole test probe undergoing wind tunnel tests, the resulting data needs to be analyzed for any significant trends. These trends include relating the pressure distributions, the geometric orientation, and the local velocity vector to one another. However, experimental runs always involve some sort of error. As a result, a calibration procedure is required to compensate for this error. For this case, it is the misalignment bias angles resulting from the distortion associated with the angularity of the test probe or the local velocity vector. Through a series of calibration steps presented here, the angular biases are determined and …
Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres
Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres
Master's Theses
The goal of this work was to compensate for the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field in a vector field magnetic sensor. The magnetic sensor is a part of a low-cost crash avoidance system by Stephane Roussel where the magnetic sensor was used to detect cars passing when it was mounted to a test vehicle. However, the magnetic sensor’s output voltage varied when it changed orientation with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field. This limited the previous work to only analyze detection rates when the test vehicle travelled a single heading. Since one of the goals of this system is …

Seismic Response Of Peaty Organic Soils As A Levee Foundation Material, Robb E.S. Moss, Justin C. Hollenback
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The dynamic response of peaty organic soils is not well understood but its poor competency as an engineering material is well known. Its use as a foundation material is generally avoided through careful selection of project location, or removal and replacement with more suitable material. In certain situations peaty organic soils are unavoidable because of prior land use and subsequent development of infrastructure. In a delta environment levees are often found to be overlying peaty organic deposits, the California Bay Delta and New Orleans levee systems are two important examples. The Bay Delta is in a seismically active area and …

Gauge Repeatability And Reproducibility Study For A Bulge Test Fixture For Corrugated Boxes, Anthony J. Hall
Industrial Technology and Packaging
This senior project evaluates the measurement variation within a corrugated container bulge tester by utilizing a gauge repeatability and reproducibility study. Bulge is a type of deformation containers experience when subject to compressive forces such as stacking or internal forces due to under- and over-packaging. Both compressive and internal forces can accelerate the failure of a container by causing panels to flex and flutes to buckle, compromising structural integrity. Additionally, variable environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity can magnify the effect bulge has on a container, speeding up the failure rate of a container.
