Design Of An Experimental Approach To Study The Growth Of Biofilm On Polymethylmethacrylate, Eireen S. Escalona
Design Of An Experimental Approach To Study The Growth Of Biofilm On Polymethylmethacrylate, Eireen S. Escalona
Biomedical Engineering
Biofilms are present in virtually every solid-liquid contact surface and are partially responsible for some diseases and water cleaning. They are a community of a variety of organisms that live symbiotically and are bound together by extracellular polymeric substances, or EPS. Biofilms go through five stages of development. These include initial and irreversible attachments, maturations I and II, and dispersion. In the dental world, biofilms are often associated with mouth infections including dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Elderly denture wearers are susceptible to the pathogen-causing bacteria associated with these diseases, particularly those who have Alzheimer's disease or other forms of …
Finite Element Analysis Of The Nerve Cuff To Determine Usability And Stress Analysis During Regular Use, Vivek Machhi
Finite Element Analysis Of The Nerve Cuff To Determine Usability And Stress Analysis During Regular Use, Vivek Machhi
Biomedical Engineering
To determine the stress analysis on the Nerve Cuff by MicroProbes, a finite element analysis was conducted. A simplified model was created in Solid Works using the geometry of the basic model of the nerve cuff. The solid model was then imported into Abaqus and the appropriate materials, boundary conditions, and loads were designated. Initially a tensile test simulation was conducted using a tensile force of 2.87 Newtons. The maximum stress experienced with this tensile force was 8.225 MPa which was greater than the ultimate tensile strength of 5.5 MPa of Silicone. Both the actual tensile test and the tensile …
Reliability Analysis Of Low-Silver Bga Spheres Comparing Failure Detection Criteria, Briana Fredericks
Reliability Analysis Of Low-Silver Bga Spheres Comparing Failure Detection Criteria, Briana Fredericks
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
One of the challenges of solder joint reliability tests is estimating the time of failure of the solder joint. Failure criteria should be able to detect solder joint failure as early as possible, while minimizing the probability of false detection. The failure mechanism under study is cracks due to thermal fatigue. The most common method to estimate failure due to cracks is to monitor the resistance during testing, because solder imaging and cross-sectioning methods are destructive. Current industry failure criteria do not adequately demonstrate the relationship between the size of the crack and the resulting change in resistance. This project …

Unique Replogle Flume Installations At The Truckee-Carson Irrigation District, Stuart Styles, Brandon Downing, Walter Winder
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
The Water Measurement Program (WMP) for Truckee-Carson Irrigation District (TCID) began in 1997, when the Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) of Cal Poly State University was asked to develop a volumetric measurement plan for TCID, funded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Mid-Pacific Region. This program was intended to develop and install reasonably accurate turnout delivery measurement techniques in the district. As part of the WMP, TCID was required to install a number of new open-channel measurement devices. TCID opted for the Replogle flume as its primary flow measurement device using the newly developed WinFlume computer program.

Identifying At-Risk Students: How Use Of Optional Study Materials And Collection Of Graded Work Correlate With Academic Performance, Vladimir I. Prodanov
Identifying At-Risk Students: How Use Of Optional Study Materials And Collection Of Graded Work Correlate With Academic Performance, Vladimir I. Prodanov
Electrical Engineering
We report on a study designed to identify students at risk by monitoring certain academic behaviors. Two different approaches were implemented. The first one involves monitoring student access of optional homework problems. While this approach was successful in the early identification of students at-risk, optional homework (as opposed to mandatory one) degrades attainment of learning objectives. The second approach relies upon “counting” of uncollected work. Since no grades were posted, the only way for the students to keep track of their performance was to collect their work. Failure to collect graded work, we argue, is indicative of weak motivation, poor …

Enabling Rapid Conceptual Design Using Geometry-Based Multi-Fidelity Models In Vsp, Joel Brian Belben
Master's Theses
The purpose of this work is to help bridge the gap between aircraft conceptual design and analysis. Much work is needed, but distilling essential characteristics from a design and collecting them in an easily accessible format that is amenable to use by inexpensive analysis tools is a significant contribution to this goal. Toward that end, four types of reduced-fidelity or degenerate geometric representations have been defined and implemented in VSP, a parametric geometry modeler. The four types are degenerate surface, degenerate plate, degenerate stick, and degenerate point, corresponding to three-, two-, one-, and zero- dimensional representations of underlying geometry, respectively. …

My senior project focuses on the design, testing, and manufacturing of pin fin extrusion heat sinks that are you used to cool simple electronic applications across a multitude of markets. Without the modern day heat sink, electronics that we have become familiar with throughout our everyday lives will cease to exist. I will design these heat sinks using Solid Works 3D CAD. I will then test the heat sinks using ICEPAK CFD software, where I will model the heat sink against a 5 watt application, inside of a cabinet that models the chassis of a computer. After receiving these results, …
Influence Of Wing Span On The Aerodynamics Of Wings In Ground Effect, Sammy Diasinos, Tracie J. Barber, Graham Doig
Influence Of Wing Span On The Aerodynamics Of Wings In Ground Effect, Sammy Diasinos, Tracie J. Barber, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
A computational fluid dynamics study of the influence of wing span has been conducted for an inverted wing with endplates in ground effect. Aerodynamic coefficients were determined for different spans at different ground clearances, highlighting a trend for shorter spans to delay the onset of both separation and resulting loss of negative lift. The vortices at the wing endplates were not observed to change significantly in terms of strength and size; thus, at shorter spans, their influence over a larger percentage of the wing helped the flow stay attached and reduced the severity of the adverse pressure gradient which invokes …

Shear-wave velocity (Vs) offers a means to determine the seismic resistance of soil to liquefaction by a fundamental soil property. This paper presents the results of an 11-year international project to gather new Vssite data and develop probabilistic correlations for seismic soil liquefaction occurrence. Toward that objective, shear-wave velocity test sites were identified, and measurements made for 301 new liquefaction field case histories in China, Japan, Taiwan, Greece, and the United States over a decade. The majority of these new case histories reoccupy those previously investigated by penetration testing. These new data are combined with previously published case histories to …
