Resilient Built Environment: An Overview On Design Strategies For Coastal Adaptation To Sea Level Rise, Farzaneh Soflaei, Gelareh Abdolzadeh, Navid Ziaee, Mohammad Amin Jafari, Faeghe Borhani

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper delves into the escalating risks faced by urban coastal communities due to tidal and storm flooding, exacerbated by climate change-induced Sea Level Rise (SLR). Projections indicate a potential increase in sea levels by at least 3 feet by 2100, with historical data revealing an average annual rise of 1.2-1.7 mm since the 1900s. With over 300 million individuals inhabiting coastal areas, low-lying regions emerge as particularly vulnerable to the impacts of SLR. This accelerated rise amplifies the significant challenge of nuisance flooding, a local-scale issue aggravated by high tide and winds, leading to inundation, road closures, infrastructure deterioration, …

Dinoflagellates produce cysts as a strategy to withstand environmental stressors, with nutrient depletion generally considered a key trigger for cyst production. Resting cysts are thick-walled, typically composed of one to several layers, and characterized by a prolonged dormancy period. In contrast, pellicle cysts possess a thin, single wall and exhibit no dormancy or a markedly shorter dormancy than resting cysts of the same species. Margalefidinium polykrikoides produces pellicle and resting cysts, whereas its congener, M. fulvescens, has been shown to produce pumpkin-like structures. Using phase-contrast microscopy, time-lapse microscopy, FlowCam, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (ATR μ-FTIR), …

Hybrid Learning And Optimization Methods For Solving Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2026

Hybrid Learning And Optimization Methods For Solving Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a hybrid quantum–classical framework for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) that integrates the Augmented Lagrangian Method (ALM) with deep reinforcement learning (RL). Directly solving CVRP via Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) requires a slack-based QUBO formulation, where converting inequalities to equalities greatly increases the qubit count. To circumvent this, we employ an ALM-based reformulation that enforces constraints through Lagrange terms instead of slack variables, drastically reducing quantum resource demands. An RL agent, trained with Soft Actor–Critic, adaptively tunes the Lagrange penalties to improve convergence and feasibility. Experiments show that RL-Q-ALM outperforms static-penalty and plain VQE baselines in both …

Effects Of Composition, Nodularity, Pouring Temperature, Inoculation, And Mold Strength On Wall-Movement In Sgi Castings During Solidification And Cooling, Noah Brack Jan 2026

Effects Of Composition, Nodularity, Pouring Temperature, Inoculation, And Mold Strength On Wall-Movement In Sgi Castings During Solidification And Cooling, Noah Brack

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The iron-carbon casting alloy known as spheroidal graphite iron (SGI), nodular graphite iron, or ductile iron (DI) experiences complex volume changes during its solidification and cooling as graphite nodules and austenite form. These volume changes result in forces on the mold cavity walls and can deform the mold walls in cases when mold walls lack the strength to resist the deformation. This wall movement can cause the formation of casting defects such as swell, warped part geometry, and shrinkage porosity. Though this phenomenon has been studied in the past, it remains difficult to predict casting wall movement with existing data. …

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison Jan 2026

Formalizing Asymmetric Control-Telemetry Separation In Distributed Industrial Control Systems, Andrew Manison

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Distributed industrial control systems often place control and telemetry traffic on the same communication substrate even though the two workloads impose different requirements. Control paths need bounded request-response latency and predictable acknowledgement semantics, whereas telemetry paths benefit from scalable publish-subscribe fanout and tolerance for consumer-side delay. This thesis argues that, for the tested class of mixed workloads on shared commodity infrastructure, these communication roles should be separated architecturally rather than forced through a single protocol. To evaluate that claim, the thesis formalizes an asymmetric control- telemetry pattern and instantiates it in the Asymtra framework using gRPC for synchronous control and …

Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Of Devops Infrastructure Under Dynamic Workloads, Abdulrazaq Mamud

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research aims to investigate performance optimization and reliability issues related to cloud-based computing environments through an analysis of three key infrastructure components: virtualized CPU resource management, distributed API rate limiting, and web server deployment architectures. This research combines machine learning and system experimentation as a way of exploring the impact of infrastructure-level behaviors on overall system performance and scalability. The first component of the research focuses on analyzing CPU Fragmentation in Virtualized Environments, where unbalanced workload allocation on Virtual CPU Cores causes increased tail latency, resulting in Service Level Agreement violations. Metrics are analyzed using the Random Forest classifier …

Effect Of Elemental Additions On The Microstructure, Macrostructure, And Mechanical Properties Of Gray Iron, August E. Rautmann Jan 2026

Effect Of Elemental Additions On The Microstructure, Macrostructure, And Mechanical Properties Of Gray Iron, August E. Rautmann

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Gray iron is composed primarily of an iron matrix and flake graphite, with the higher percentage of volume taken up by the iron matrix. The iron matrix is the transformation product of austenite, and this prior austenite structure is understood to affect the final grain structure. Grain structure affects the properties of a metal, with a finer structure recognized as beneficial for most properties. Thus, the refinement of austenite structure has potential in improving the material properties of gray iron. This study aims to advance the limited knowledge about the control of austenite grain size via elemental additions. Building off …

The Effect Of Chamber Geometry On The Performance Of Oscillating Water Column, Timilehin O. Osunade

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the effect of internal chamber geometry on the performance of a piezoelectric oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy harvester. Four acrylic chamber configurations with internal top-surface angles of 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° were tested under 32 controlled conditions combining synchronous (SYN) and asynchronous (ASC) forcing at input voltages of 4, 6, 8, and 10 V. A 35 mm piezoelectric disc mounted at the chamber roof served as the power take-off element and, subject to the RC-limit caveat disclosed in Section 3.2.1, as a first-order dynamic analogue of the chamber pressure for phase-based compressibility analysis. All test …

Effect Of Wall Movement On Porosity Formation In Ductile Iron Castings Under Varying Processing Parameters, Shamsul Alam Jan 2026

Effect Of Wall Movement On Porosity Formation In Ductile Iron Castings Under Varying Processing Parameters, Shamsul Alam

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Shrinkage porosity is a major defect that significantly impairs the mechanical properties and overall performance of ductile iron castings. Although graphite formation during solidification induces volumetric expansion, this expansion alone is insufficient to fully compensate for the shrinkage occurring throughout solidification. During the solidification and cooling of ductile iron, multiple phase transformations occur, resulting in dynamic volume changes that exert pressure on mold walls and internal cavities. These pressures can deform mold walls and casting surfaces, leading to defects such as swell and porosity, while also influencing shrinkage formation. This study aims to analyze the mechanisms of porosity formation and …

Feasibility Of Quantifying The Dosage Of Zycotherm In Its Modified Asphalt Binders, Susmita Acharjee Jan 2026

Feasibility Of Quantifying The Dosage Of Zycotherm In Its Modified Asphalt Binders, Susmita Acharjee

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The quantification of low-percentage additives in asphalt binders is challenging due to their minimal concentration and the complex composition of the binder matrix. Zycotherm, a nano-organosilane anti-stripping additive, is typically used in very small dosages (0.05%–0.20%), making its detection and quantification particularly difficult. This study investigated the feasibility of estimating Zycotherm dosage in asphalt binders by examining chemical and rheological and moisture responses. Two asphalt binder grades, PG 64-22 and PG 76-22, were modified with Zycotherm at dosages of 0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15%, and 0.20% by weight of binder, along with corresponding base binders. Laboratory experiments were conducted using Fourier Transform …

N-Radii Approach For Multi-Scale Characterization Of Graphite Shape In Cast Iron, Simon N. Lekakh, Laura Bartlett

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Knowledge of multi-scale particle macro-shape and micro-surface topology is critical in many technical disciplines. Specifically, quality assessment of the shape of the graphite phase in cast irons is essential for day-to-day metal casting operations. Common methods for evaluating particle macro-shape have several drawbacks, often resulting in underestimation of sharp corners and surface texture. In this article, a method based on plotting n-radii from the center of mass to the perimeter and computing multi-scale topological characteristics is described and tested. Parametric tests, involving variations in the number of n-radii and image resolution, were performed to optimize the test parameters. The method …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate prediction of the critical transformation temperatures Ac1 and Ac3 is one of the essential factors in the heat treatment of CA6NM cast martensitic stainless steel. In this study, the influence of alloy composition, heating rate, and prior austenite grain size on the critical temperatures was quantified using dilatometric measurements and statistical modeling. Six heat treatment conditions produced prior austenite grain sizes ranging from ~75 to 247 µm. Experimental results showed that grain size variations produced only minor changes in Ac1 and Ac3, indicating a weak dependence of transformation temperatures on prior austenite grain size within the investigated range. In …

State-Dependent Queueing For Adaptive Signal Control: A Simulation-Based Performance Evaluation, Shaimaa Alseddiek, Usama Elrawy Shahdah, Hala B. Nafea, Hossam El-Din Moustafa, El-Said Ahmed Marzouk, Mohamed M. Ashour

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Urban traffic congestion persists as a critical challenge to transportation system efficiency, sustainability, and safety. Traditional queuing models utilizing fixed service rates inadequately represent the dynamic feedback between congestion and capacity in real vehicular flow. State-Dependent Queuing Models (SDQMs) address this limitation by modelling service rate as a function of queue length or density. This research advances SDQM application for adaptive traffic signal control through development of a calibrated state-dependent departure rate implemented within a microscopic simulation environment using SUMO and TraCI. Six control strategies including fixed-time, actuated, and two SDQM variants were evaluated across traffic demands ranging from undersaturated …

Modeling Healthcare Data With Logistic Quantile And Uniform-Based Mixture Polynomial Distributions, Mohan D. Pant, Aditya Chakraborty, Jovanna A. Tracz Jan 2026

Modeling Healthcare Data With Logistic Quantile And Uniform-Based Mixture Polynomial Distributions, Mohan D. Pant, Aditya Chakraborty, Jovanna A. Tracz

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Continuous healthcare data often deviate from normality, which can substantially increase the risk of making invalid inferences, given that many inferential statistical procedures rely on normality assumption. To obviate this issue, we propose a new family of non-normal distributions based on a linear combination of the quantile functions of standard logistic and uniform (0, 1) distributions. This new family of non-normal distributions is studied within three different methods: L-moments, conventional moments, and percentiles. Its performance is compared among the three methods in the context of parameter estimation and data modeling. The results of Monte Carlo simulation and bootstrapping techniques indicate …

Dietary Intake Of Micro- And Nanoplastics: Potential Adverse Gi Effects On Microbiome, Inflammation, And Neoplasia, Michael Saadeh, Gordon Hong, Sana Rabeeah, Priyata Dutta, Edward C. Oldfield, Iv, David A. Johnson

Department of Medicine Faculty Publications

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are pervasive in food-contact environments and the human diet, positioning the gastrointestinal (GI) tract as the primary portal of entry and a plausible site of early biological effects. Human exposure is supported by detection of microplastics in stool and colon tissue, and emerging clinical studies report associations between fecal microplastic burden and GI disease states, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Preclinical studies provide mechanistic plausibility, reporting that ingested MNPs can modulate microbial ecology, alter mucus membrane integrity, increase intestinal permeability through changes in cellular tight junction biology, and induce inflammatory gene expression. …

Micro- And Nanoplastics: A Paradigm Shift In The Pathogenesis Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Michael Saadeh, Priyata Dutta, Gordon Hong, Edward Oldfield, David A. Johnson

Department of Medicine Faculty Publications

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are pervasive environmental contaminants with growing recognition as potential contributors to human disease. Widespread human exposure occurs primarily through ingestion of contaminated food and water, and MNPs have been detected in multiple human tissues, including the gastrointestinal tract. Experimental evidence provides a plausible biological basis for disease associations, including impairment of intestinal barrier integrity, activation of mucosal immune pathways, and alteration of gut microbial communities caused by MNP exposure. Although human data remain limited, early studies demonstrate MNP detection in stool and suggest potential correlations with inflammatory biomarkers such as fecal calprotectin. These findings, together with …

Chronic exposure to MNPs may interfere with metabolic homeostasis through multiple biological pathways. Emerging evidence, including both experimental and animal studies, reports alterations in lipid metabolism, body weight, …

The Effects Of Membrane Structure And Filtration Conditions On Virus Filtration, Wenbo Xu, Xianghong Qian, Hironobu Shirataki, Daniel Strauss, Sumith R. Wickramasinghe Jan 2026

The Effects Of Membrane Structure And Filtration Conditions On Virus Filtration, Wenbo Xu, Xianghong Qian, Hironobu Shirataki, Daniel Strauss, Sumith R. Wickramasinghe

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Virus filtration is used for validation of virus clearance in the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies. Requirements for this size exclusion process include 10,000-fold reduction of virus particles and at least 95 % recovery of the monoclonal antibody in the permeate. The size difference between the rejected parvovirus particles, 25 nm, and monoclonal antibody, 10-12 nm, is about two. Membranes are designed with pore sizes around the average size of the parvovirus. Given the polydispersity in membrane pore size and virus particles, filter performance is dependent on membrane properties, feed and operating conditions. Compromised performance usually occurs due to product related …

Adaptive Machine Learning Framework For Microstructural Optimization And Mechanical Performance Prediction In Steels, Henry Adekola Haffner

Doctoral Dissertations

Evolution of microstructures, such as polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, bainite, and martensite, plays a pivotal role in determining the final microstructural and mechanical properties of steel products. Given the established inter-relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, properties, and performance, precise control of phase transformation is essential to achieve pre-determined properties. To understand transformation routes in different steel grades, time-temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams are necessary and can be described using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation and Scheil’s additivity rule. This study presents a comprehensive computational framework for predicting and optimizing microstructure and mechanical properties in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) using adaptive machine …
