Modal Characteristics Of A Vibrating Truss, Edd Leighman Ghent Jr. Jan 1966

Modal Characteristics Of A Vibrating Truss, Edd Leighman Ghent Jr.

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, a complete technique is presented for the vibration analysis of any planar structure which can be classified in the broad category of trusses or frames. Although a theoretical backdrop is included for the' sake of completeness, the intent is to provide a technique that is readily adapted to computer usage and can be handled with a minimum of confusion or misunderstanding.

The problem is solved by the use of a displacement technique wherein the inertia and stiffness properties of a structure are calculated by superimposing the contributions of each component of the structure. The calculation of these …

An Algorithm For The Synthesis Of Nand Logic Networks Using A Diagrammatic Approach, Donald Robert Nelson Jan 1966

An Algorithm For The Synthesis Of Nand Logic Networks Using A Diagrammatic Approach, Donald Robert Nelson

Masters Theses

"A diagrammatic approach is presented for the synthesis of multilevel NAND networks realizing combinational logic expressions. The network synthesized is restricted to only uncomplemented inputs. The synthesis algorithm involves the determination of minimum sum of products and product of sums expressions for a Boolean function, construction of an α-ß diagram from these expressions followed by implementation with NAND gates directly from the diagram. The resulting network is a minimal or near minimal NAND gate realization of the given function. The algorithm is applicable to completely or incompletely specified Boolean functions and is extended to include NOR synthesis"--Abstract, page 2.

A Nonlinear Sampled Data Feedback Control System Employing Pulsed Thrust Position Control, John D. Corrigan Jan 1966

A Nonlinear Sampled Data Feedback Control System Employing Pulsed Thrust Position Control, John D. Corrigan

Masters Theses

"This thesis shows that reaction jet thrust pulses, each of constant amplitude and time duration, in conjunction with sampled data error information can provide satisfactory position and/or attitude control for space vehicles.

Incremental phase-plane analysis of the system yields a technique for determining system response and suggests a means of compensation. Control system response for the vehicle under the influence of external forces is shown to be satisfactory by digital computer simulation"--Abstract, page ii.

Some Effects Of Selected Biodegradable Detergents On The Aeration Of Water And Activated Sludge, Donald Ernest Modesitt Jan 1966

Some Effects Of Selected Biodegradable Detergents On The Aeration Of Water And Activated Sludge, Donald Ernest Modesitt

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to determine what effects the presence of selected biodegradable detergents have on the aeration of water and the activated sludge process for aerobic wastewater treatment. The detergents studied were LAS #1, Alfol, and Nalkylene. It was of particular interest to determine if these detergents decreased the oxygen absorptive capacities of water and wastewater. If detrimental effects were produced by the detergents it was then desired to determine if these effects were serious enough to create problems with aerobic wastewater treatment and aeration in receiving bodies of water.

A two liter volume of the liquids …

The Plastic Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Beams With Varying Percentages Of Reinforcing Steel Symmetrically Placed, J. Leroy Hulsey

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to determine the limitations of the plastic behavior of reinforced concrete beams with varying percentages of high strength steel (ASTM-A-432) cutoff in the compression region d distance beyond the point of inflection. Comparison was made with the derived equations.

Steel was placed symmetrically in order to obtain like action at critical sections. The members tested were of a propped beam nature having a total clear span of 5'6" with a 6" overhang on one end and 1'6" overhang on the other. Concentrated loads were applied so as to obtain midspan loading and fixed end …

Modification Of The Hydraulic Jump By Submerged Jets, Edward Leon Tharp Jan 1966

Modification Of The Hydraulic Jump By Submerged Jets, Edward Leon Tharp

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed in order to determine the effect of submerged jets injecting water into the base of the hydraulic jump. The jump was studied in terms of the following properties: specific energy of the flow leaving the hydraulic jump, length of the hydraulic jump, tailwater depth, and wave formation properties. These properties for the hydraulic jump with submerged jets were compared to the natural hydraulic jump.

Results of the tests indicate that: submerged jets at any angle tested tend to decrease the specific energy of the water leaving the jump and are more effective than the impulse-momentum principle indicates, …

Analysis Charts For Single And Multi-Span Gabled Frames, John (Chung-Su) Ma Jan 1966

Analysis Charts For Single And Multi-Span Gabled Frames, John (Chung-Su) Ma

Masters Theses

"A method for analyzing single and multi-span gabled frames using analysis charts is presented. This method requires considerably fewer computations than methods previously used (such as the moment distribution and slope-deflection methods). Analysis charts are presented for single gabled frames having fixed or pinned ends at ground level, and charts are also presented which can be used to efficiently analyze multi-gabled frames.

The data for the analysis charts were obtained using matrix techniques in conjunction with the digital computer. These techniques are described"--Abstract, page ii.

A Crystallographic Study Of The Pbzro₃-Pbtio₃-Bifeo₃ Ternary System., Dannie R. Clarida

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a crystallographic study of the PbZrO₃-PbTiO₃-BiFeO₃ ternary system, where all three components are perovskites. Lead zirconate is antiferroelectric, lead titanate is ferroelectric, and bismuth ferrate is thought to be ferroelectric. X-ray diffraction analysis was employed to determine the crystallographic structure and lattice parameters.

A tetragonal region was found to exist in the area of high PbTiO₃ content. A rhombohedral region occurred in the remainder of the system with high BiFeO₃ and PbZrO₃ content, except for an orthorhombic envelope along the PbZrO₃-BiFeO₃ side of the diagram up to approximately 70 per cent BiFeO₃.The …

Some Effects Of Sodium Pentachlorophenol On Activated Sludge And Minnows., James Albert Heidman Jan 1966

Some Effects Of Sodium Pentachlorophenol On Activated Sludge And Minnows., James Albert Heidman

Masters Theses

"The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of sodium pentachlorophenol on activated sludge. An additional objective was to determine the toxicity of sodium pentachlorophenol to minnows.

All activated sludge units were grown on a glucose and mineral nutrient waste. In addition, a unit acclimated to 100 and 250 mg/1 of sodium pentachlorophenol was also studied. The effect of a shock loading of sodium pentachlorophenol was found to depend on the concentration of the loading and also on the group of micro-organisms which were predominating. One activated sludge system was seriously impared at a shock loading of …

Slope Stability Analysis Of A Fissured Glacial Clay, Byron G. Walker Jan 1966

Slope Stability Analysis Of A Fissured Glacial Clay, Byron G. Walker

Masters Theses

"A slope in an over-consolidated, fissured clay was analyzed by the Swedish Method of Slices.

Values of cohesion (c) and angles of friction (Ø) were determined by three different types of direct shear tests (undrained, drained and residual).

Factors of safety (functions of c and Ø) indicated that the direct shear test parameter gave a factor of safety approximately four times that represented by failure conditions in the field. Drained tests gave a factor of safety nearly 2.3 times the value represented by field conditions. The conclusion is made that these two tests are of limited value for slope stability …

The Construction Of A Fermi Neutron Chopper For Cross Section Measurements, Cleon Marion Mobley

Masters Theses

"A Fermi neutron chopper and control system has been constructed and put into operation at the end of the UMR Reactor thermal column.

The operation of the chopper has been demonstrated by reproducing the slow neutron cross section data for aluminum and by measuring the previously undetermined slow cross section of cobalt.

The chopper which is powered by a series DC motor consists of 34 cadmium plated stainless steel blades separated by 1/16 inch aluminum spacers. The design incorporates the better characteristics of the Brookhaven and Argonne slow choppers. Speed regulation is accomplished using a silicon controlled rectifier feed back …

Plastic Design Of Steel Frames For Minimum Weight, I-Chen Hung Jan 1966

Plastic Design Of Steel Frames For Minimum Weight, I-Chen Hung

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to develop a method for weight minimization of the plastically designed frame, braced normal to its plane of action, and composed of prismatic steel members. The method accounts for the non-linear relationship between weight and moment capacity for both beams and columns. Reduction in the pure-bending fully-plastic moment in the presence of axial loading and both beam-column instability and overall frame instability due to sidesway are taken into account. Provision is made for minimization of frames employing standard sections as well as for frames whose built-up members may be chosen from a continuous spectrum. …

Minimum Cost Data Collection Techniques For Circulation Control At The University Of Missouri At Rolla Library, John Peter Shewchuk Sr.

Masters Theses

"Data collection is beginning to assume increased importance in the field of data processing. This thesis investigates a method for quantitatively selecting a portion of the library to place on an automated circulation control system that uses data collection as an entry into a data processing system.

The circulation function of the library was considered to be an inventory problem. Titles were considered as items of inventory and circulation of that title was considered to be a "sale" of that item. The IMPACT method was used to distribute items (titles) in a sample by age. Various ages were found to …

The Effect Of Moisture On The Compressive And Tensile Strength On A Variety Of Rock Materials, Richard A. Martin Jan 1966

The Effect Of Moisture On The Compressive And Tensile Strength On A Variety Of Rock Materials, Richard A. Martin

Masters Theses

"The effect of moisture on the strength characteristics of rock materials has been neglected in the study of rock mechanics. This study was undertaken to determine if there was any effect on the compressive and the tensile strength of rock by varying the moisture content from an oven-dried to a saturated condition.
It was found, by testing eight different rock materials that the compressive strength per unit area decreased with an increasing moisture content. The tensile strengths per unit area, with the exception of the quartzite and the porphyry samples, also decreased with an increase in moisture content. The tensile …

Australian Tractor Test Report No. 41 : The Massey-Ferguson 135, G H. Vasey, F. T. Baillie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE Massey-Ferguson MF-135 is a general purpose tractor of 31 drawbar horsepower. It has 14.9 x 24 pneumatic tyres, and a three-speed gear box with a ratio change which, in the standard model, gives six forward and two reverse gears.

The model tested was also fitted with the optional "Multipower" facility, which gives an "on-the-go" shift to a higher speed for each gear, thus providing 12 forward and four reverse gears.
