Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis Aug 1972

Microprogramming For Probability Distribution Sampling, Theodore Gyle Lewis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microprogramming of special instructions for sampling of random variates from any probability distribution is a means of increasing sampling speed. The diversity of sampling techniques is narrowed to one general algorithm: conditional bit sampling. Conditional bit sampling uses a high-speed uniform random number generator based on feedback shift registers to sample one bit at a time. The probability of a bit being a one in the j-th position of a binary expanded variate is stored in a table of conditional probabilities. A comparison with the pseudorandom number yields a one or zero. The table of conditional probabilities is generated once …

Peak Temperature Distribution In Steel Plates During Arc-Welding, Bhanuprakash M. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The welding of steel plays an important role as a major fabricating process in industry. In the field of welding metallurgy, much attention is given to the effects which a welding arc or flame will have on the structure and properties of the metals being joined. The engineer is interested in the intensify and extent of physical changes brought about by the unavoidable heat treatment which accompanies the execution of a weld. In order to gain some quantitative appreciation of the way in which the metallurgical effects of welding depend on welding variables, geometry, and physical properties, considerable attention has …

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we will be concerned with the two-dimensional steady laminar Newtonian fluid flow with constant fluid properties in Cartesian coordinate system. More precisely, we will consider a flow for which the interesting dependent variables, for example, velocity, vorticity, stream function, etc., are expressible as functions of two independent Cartesian coordinates.

Operational Characteristics Of Lane Drops, Don L. Cornette Aug 1972

Operational Characteristics Of Lane Drops, Don L. Cornette

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Traffic behavior studies were conducted at seven lane-drop locations, representing four lane-drop classes. These studies were composed of conflict observations (consisting of both erratic movement and brakelight applications), spot-speed observations, and lane volume counts. Such a study was made before and after each different traffic control device installation in an attempt to determine which device was the most effective in minimizing conflicts at existing lane drops. A study of conflict deviations indicates that no single type of traffic control device studied was significantly effective in reducing erratic movement and brakelight rates at all seven lane-drop locations. Rather, it appears that …

A Study Of The Prevalent Categories Of Conflict As Perceived By The Architect And The School Client On School Construction Projects In Indiana, Tracy Dust Aug 1972

A Study Of The Prevalent Categories Of Conflict As Perceived By The Architect And The School Client On School Construction Projects In Indiana, Tracy Dust

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In view of the complexities which are now involved in school facility construction, it is paramount that the relationship between the architect and his school client develop fully and that it be based upon a clear and mutual understanding of role expectation. The school board, as the hiring agency, is characteristically composed of laymen both in the field of education and in the field of heavy construction. They must rely upon the judgment of the architect regarding the design features of the proposed facility and must depend upon their superintendent and his staff for determining educational program requirements.

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser Jul 1972

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Intended for audio engineers, Richard C. Heyser meant for this paper to bring attention to the misapplication of the theoretical concept, the Uncertainty Principle. Heyser argues that this concept has been "freely applied without regard to the errors which may result due to lack of understanding of its derivation."

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon Jul 1972

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation presents a method for designing near-time-optimal feedback controllers of time-invariant linear normal systems in which the system matrix is negative definite and the control input is a bounded scalar function.

The basic design approach is to systematically construct a sequence of multiplane (piecewise linear) suboptimal switching surfaces which converges to the optimal switching surface and to test the quality of the suboptimal switching surface constructed in each iteration until one which satisfies the relative (optimal/suboptimal) performance criterion given a priori is obtained.

Continuous Crystallization Of High Explosives, Larry E. Hatler Jul 1972

Continuous Crystallization Of High Explosives, Larry E. Hatler

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Nitroguanidine (NQ) is a high explosive which is commercially available in low bulk density form (0.20 to 0.30 gms/cm3). This low bulk density limits its usefulness as an explosive. High bulk density NQ can be produced from a NQ-N, N-dime-thylformamide-Versamid 125 system when crystallized in a mixed suspension mixed product removal crystallizer. Bulk densities ranged from 0.92 to 1.05 gms/cm3 for the operating conditions used. The effect of agitator speed, growth rate, and solids concentration on nucleation rates was determined using a multiple linear regression technique. The resulting equation is: B0 = 0.19 (RPM) 1.54 (G) …

Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast Jr. Jul 1972

Entropy Reduction Of English Text Using Variable Length Grouping, Vincent Norman Ast Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

It is known that the entropy of English text can be reduced by arranging the text into groups of two or more letters each. The higher the order of the grouping the greater is the entropy reduction. Using this principle in a computer text compressing system brings about difficulties, however, because the number of entries required in the translation table increases exponentially with group size. This experiment examined the possibility of using a translation table containing only selected entries of all group sizes with the expectation of obtaining a substantial entropy reduction with a relatively small table.

An expression was …

A New Optimization Procedure For Digital Simulation, Donald Howard Schroeder Jul 1972

A New Optimization Procedure For Digital Simulation, Donald Howard Schroeder

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The theory needed to define and obtain an optimized digital simulation of a given continuous system is presented in this dissertation. The frequency domain approach to simulation is used and a nonlinear function minimization algorithm, implemented on a digital computer, is incorporated to obtain the optimum simulation.

The discrete transfer function obtained from z-transform theory is used to represent the digital system. The frequency domain response of this discrete transfer function can then be expressed simply as a function of frequency, for frequencies up to one-half the sampling frequency. A frequency domain error measure, in the complex plane, is defined …

Dispersion In Laminiar Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids, Subhash N. Shah Jul 1972

Dispersion In Laminiar Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids, Subhash N. Shah

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

In the present investigation, Taylor's analysis of the dispersion of solutes in laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid through a circular tube was extended to the case of a non-Newtonian Eyring model fluid. A new approach was taken to solve the convective diffusion equation for the Eyring model fluid. This approach incorporates the use of the dimensionless longitudinal pressure gradient and the mean velocity to obtain the dimensionless concentration. Using an approach similar to that of Taylor, a solution of the diffusion equation was obtained for quantities such as the dimensionless concentration, mean concentration, and effective dispersion coefficient as a …

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala Jul 1972

Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala

Dissertations and Theses

In order to overcome the difficulties encountered in closed form solutions, moment-curvature-thrust relationships are developed for hybrid and nonhybrid cross sections utilizing an open form method. The use of horizontal sectors permits the inclusion of residual stresses and/or nonbilinear stress-strain relationships, if desired. Theoretical and experimental data are compared. Applications to circular tubes and other cross sections are discussed. Results indicate that open form solutions are feasible for calculating moment-curvature-thrust data. Hybrid cross sections are easily treated by open form solutions.

Unstable Embankment: Us 119 Harlan-Pineville Road Stations 1260 To 1265, Tommy C. Hopkins Jul 1972

Unstable Embankment: Us 119 Harlan-Pineville Road Stations 1260 To 1265, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In January I972, an in-depth investigation of an unstable embankment, Figure 1, on US 119 near Station 1262+00 was initiated. The site is approximately five miles southwest of Harlan and near Wilhoit. Figures 2 and 3 show a plan view and a typical cross-section, respectively. US 119 travels on a tangent from Station 1252+16 to 1255+54 in a northerly direction. From that point, the roadway gradually curves four degrees to the east, becoming tangent again near Station 1275+00. At about Station 1258+00, the roadway emerges from a cut, and near Station 1266+00 it reenters a small cut. Between the latter …

Skid Resistance Of Pavements [July 1972], Rolands L. Rizenbergs, James L. Burchett, Cass T. Napier Jul 1972

Skid Resistance Of Pavements [July 1972], Rolands L. Rizenbergs, James L. Burchett, Cass T. Napier

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Standard pavement types and experimental surfaces on roads throughout Kentucky were evaluated in terms of skid resistance and effects of traffic, wear, and polishing. Friction-vs-speed gradients and the relationships between locked-wheel and incipient friction were determined. Class I bituminous pavements on high-speed, four-lane roads were found to be significantly more skid resistant than on two-lane highways and somewhat more skid resistant than concrete surfaces (especially those containing calcareous gravel aggregates). Sand-asphalt surfaces containing significant proportions of limestone sands showed inadequate level of friction for the traffic sustained. Several experimental sand asphalts without limestone sands exhibited greater skid resistance; Kentucky rock …

A Numerical Technique For Solving Rigid Body Impact On An Incompressible, Viscous Medium, Cecil Thomas Chapman Jul 1972

A Numerical Technique For Solving Rigid Body Impact On An Incompressible, Viscous Medium, Cecil Thomas Chapman

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A technique for solving rigid-body impact on a viscous, incompressible medium is presented. The numerical scheme is adapted from the Marker and Cell (MAC) method developed to solve problems involving time-dependent motion of a viscous, incompressible fluid in two-dimensional space. As the pressure end velocity fields are computed throughout the flow field, the solution gives the force and displacement time history of the rigid-body during the impact phase. In conjunction with this, through a system of marker particles, the changes in configuration of the viscous medium on impact can be studied. With a "movie frame" (incremental time) approach, computational experimentation …

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share Jun 1972

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share

Dissertations

The analysis of nonuniform waveguides is formulated in terms of non-orthogonal generalized coordinates by utilizing the Hertz vector potentials and the Riemann metric tensor.

When the Hertz potential is expressible as a function of the propagation coordinate times a function of the transverse coordinates, then the nonuniform waveguide may be represented by transverse equations and a set of uncoupled nonuniform transmission lines. This decomposition facilitates studying propagation along the propagation coordinate. Sufficient conditions to achieve this decomposition are investigated. It is demonstrated that these constraints may provide guidelines for selecting a useful coordinate system to describe the nonuniform waveguide. In …

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer Jun 1972

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a novel "four-step acoustical holographic imaging system" is described and several means for its implementation are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. This system is compared with other methods of acoustical holography, (ie. permitting to obtain a visible, 3-D image of an object insonified with supersonic waves) and some of its advantages are indicated.

The use of optical holographic techniques to convert an arbitrary acoustic image to a visible image is investigated and a new method - the "holographic sound image converter" - is introduced and analyzed. This converter consists of the "holographic interferometer" and an appropriate "coupler". …

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano Jun 1972

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano

Theses

The stoichiometry and the kinetics of the reactions of KMnO4 in KCl and KIO4 in KCl were studied. The kinetics of the reactions were studied at three different temperatures to obtain the thermodynamic parameters. In addition, these reactions were studied in KBr and RbI matrices. The data was obtained using infrared spectrophotometer measurements.

The reactions all appeared to be first order with respect to the permanganate ion. The stoichiometric studies indicate that the Mn4- is converted to Mn++ and the Mn++ ion apparently catalyzes the reduction of KI4. The results indicate the …

Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg Jun 1972

Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg

Theses

This thesis presents a new equation for predicting catalyst utilization with continuous replacement in multistage continuous reactors from batch reactor data.

An equation is derived from experimental data for a. no-replacement system which predicts catalyst activity as a function of time. The assumption of constant inventory, constant replacement rate and perfect mixing permit the calculation of catalyst age distribution. By combining age distribution with a measure of catalyst productivity, as determined from activity as a function of time, an equation for catalyst utilization was derived. The case used to prepare this equation was where the activity decline curve appears as …
