Air Breakdown In A Radial-Mode Focusing Element, Lee W. Casperson, Mohammad Shabbir Shekhani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A new radial focusing device is described that condenses an incident laser beam to an extremely intense and uniformly illuminated focal spot. The focal region is useful for many applications. When used with a 10.6-µm CO₂ TEA laser source, a disk-shaped air-breakdown spark results, and the properties of this spark have been investigated.

Surface Elastic Waves In Piezoelectric Semiconductors And Layered Media, Yu-Pin Han Jan 1974

Surface Elastic Waves In Piezoelectric Semiconductors And Layered Media, Yu-Pin Han

Doctoral Dissertations

"The primary interest of this investigation is to understand the surface elastic wave properties in piezoelectric semiconductors and layered media. Generalized piezoelectric wave equations in piezoelectric semiconductors and layered media are derived. Systems considered are the piezoelectric semiconductor, the two layer piezoelectric insulator-semiconductor, the three layer piezoelectric insulator- gap-semiconductor and the four layer piezoelectric insulator-gap-semiconductor-dielectric substrate. The eigenwave expansion and the iteration methods in the complex domain are used to solve the problems. Mathematically, it represents a solution of the eigenvalue boundary value problem which involves iteration of functions in the complex domain. Solutions obtained are eigenvalues and eigenvectors which …

Transition Boiling Of Normal Pentane From A Horizontal Flat Gold Surface, Ronald M. Canon Jan 1974

Transition Boiling Of Normal Pentane From A Horizontal Flat Gold Surface, Ronald M. Canon

Doctoral Dissertations

"The characteristic boiling curve for Normal Pentane was determined at 1 atmosphere pressure with particular attention devoted to the transition boiling region. The heat transfer surface was a horizontal, gold-plated, copper disc.

Stability analysis was employed to demonstrate why previous investigators have had only limited success in collecting data in the transition region and to provide a valid basis for equipment designed to operate in this region.

A method of predicting the transition region boiling curve from the nucleate curve and the Liedenfrost point is presented. The method was found to predict the transition boiling of Normal Pentane, Freon 12, …

The Effect Of Contact Angle, Surface Roughness, And Adsorption Of Heterogeneous Nucleation Of Condensing Water, Prafulla Chandra Mahata Jan 1974

The Effect Of Contact Angle, Surface Roughness, And Adsorption Of Heterogeneous Nucleation Of Condensing Water, Prafulla Chandra Mahata

Doctoral Dissertations

"Condensation of water vapor on various surfaces was studied experimentally. It was found that supersaturations as high as 25% were required to initiate condensation on hydrophobic surfaces. The supersaturation data agreed qualitatively with the Volmer theory of heterogeneous nucleation. The influence of adsorption of water vapor was found to be small. Surface roughness caused a little reduction in the critical supersaturation"--Abstract, page iii.

A Study Of Exothermic Chemical Reaction In A Porous Catalyst Wedge, Joseph Michael Schardl Jr. Jan 1974

A Study Of Exothermic Chemical Reaction In A Porous Catalyst Wedge, Joseph Michael Schardl Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"Temperature and composition were measured at various locations in a system where ethylene is hydrogenated to ethane on a 1/4 inch porous catalyst wedge made of nickel supported on alumina. 'When the wedge of catalyst was bathed in hydrogen, experimental results indicated a high temperature rise from the feed temperature to the catalyst which is implied by the diffusion controlled regime for solid catalyzed, highly exothermic reactions. This high activity was reversibly reduced by bathing the catalyst wedge in nitrogen for extended time periods (greater than 24 hours). This nitrogen soaking changed the experimental conditions from those of diffusion controlled …

Analysis Of A Portable, One Hundred Ampere Pulse Test Current Microhmmeter, John Marshall Allred Jan 1974

Analysis Of A Portable, One Hundred Ampere Pulse Test Current Microhmmeter, John Marshall Allred

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report is an analysis of the Model RT-2 Microhmmeter which is a portable apparatus using a pulse current power source in the measurement of load resistances in the microhm range. The need for accurately measuring resistances in the microhm range is quite real for testing electrical power circuit breaker contact resistance. Both during acceptance checking within the manufacturing process and in the field for preventative maintenance, contact resistance must be accurately determined. Before the invention of the Model RT-2 Micrometer, no device existed which could accurately measure resistances in the microhm range that was readily transported by an unaided …

Cost/Schedule Control Criteria For Selected Government Contracts, Robert Mcdowell Hammond Jan 1974

Cost/Schedule Control Criteria For Selected Government Contracts, Robert Mcdowell Hammond

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report presents and interprets the Cost/Schedule Control System Criteria, management techniques which have been determined by the Department of Defense to represent appropriate methods for adequately controlling program costs and schedules. Applied to selected contracts of significantly large dollar value, these standards provide for a system which affords the contractor the ability for effective program management and the customer sufficient output visibility for proper program progress evaluation. These criteria differ from typical management methods in that they include a means for assessing the value of completed work in terms of its planned cost. Comparing this with the planned cost …

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George Jan 1974

An Economical-Digital Interface For Multiplex Recording Of Analog Signals, Samuel Knoles George

Masters Theses

"In measuring and evaluating performance of an automobile and driver combination it is necessary to record data from the vehicle and driver while both are in the field.

The University of Missouri - Rolla Transportation Research Program performs this type of evaluation. The present method of recording data in the field is with a large, bulky, and somewhat fragile strip chart recorder.

The digital recording interface described in this paper is designed to permit replacement of the strip chart recorder with an audio tape recorder. The interface will allow simultaneous recording of two analog channels which may be reproduced as …

Simulation Of Steady And Unsteady Flows In Channels And Rivers, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1974

Simulation Of Steady And Unsteady Flows In Channels And Rivers, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

The unsteady, one-dimensional Saint-Venant equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme to handle general channel and river flows. The initial conditions for the unsteady flow are provided by solving the steady varied flow equation for the specified boundary conditions. The solution for the unsteady flow allows any of eight separate boundary conditions to be specified which are composed of combinations of specifying the depth or discharge as functions of time at either the upstream of downstream ends, with the stage-discharge relation or constant depth and flow rate specified at the other end. Typical solutions showing the spatial and …

Component Description Of Sediment-Water Microcosms, James Hill Iv Jan 1974

Component Description Of Sediment-Water Microcosms, James Hill Iv

Reports

The development and application of complementary variables (potential and flux) for modeling environmental systems are illustrated for the hydraulic and dissolved oxygen subsystems of laboratory microcosms. These sediment-water, semi-continuous flow microcosms were used to determine nutrient interchange and mercury interactions under lighted (aerobic) and dark (anaerobic) conditions. The approach of using complementary variables to describe such systems forces a more complete conceptual understanding of the system and better attention to those parameters (many of which are unknown) requiring measurement. Complementary variables are incorporated into basic linear component equations which describe basic processes of energy transfer and transformation. The components are …

Hydrologic Model Studies Of The Mt. Olympus Cove Area Of Salt Lake County, J. Paul Riley, Vernon J. Rogers, George B. Shih Jan 1974

Hydrologic Model Studies Of The Mt. Olympus Cove Area Of Salt Lake County, J. Paul Riley, Vernon J. Rogers, George B. Shih

Reports

Urban development on any natural drainage basin causes marked changes in the runoff characteristics of the basin. Urbanization alters natural drainage channels and reduces average infiltration rates. Thus, flood conditions are enhanced both within the urbanizing area itself and at downstream locations, where existing channels might not be able to cope with the increased rates of water flow. The Olympus Cove area in Salt Lake County is undergoing rapid urban development, and potential flood hazards within the area and at downstream locations are thereby increasing. Recognizing this situation, officials of the Sale Lake County took the initiative in organizing an …
