Operation And Calibration Procedures For A Small Four-Component Strain Gage Balance, Gary Allen Rasponi Jan 1974

Operation And Calibration Procedures For A Small Four-Component Strain Gage Balance, Gary Allen Rasponi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Florida Technological University four-component strain-gage balance is an internally mounted, half-inch diameter balance capable of measuring four components of load: front and rear normal force, axial force, and rolling moment. Measurement of these components is accomplished by means of sixteen strain gages that are mounted on the balance and wired into four full bridge circuits. When the balance is subjected to a load, the strain gages, through a small resistance change, indicated the strain a balance element is undergoing. This report presents a description of the balance and its support equipment, and outlines specific calibration procedures necessary to their …

A Design Report On A Servo Controlled Inertial Sensor Test Fixture, James B. Dowdle

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses the design of a servo controlled positioning system for remote control positioning of inertial sensors while under high acceleration test in a centrifuge. A rotating fixture and an electronic control panel was built for this purpose, with two modes of operation. The fixture can be positioned with an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and a resolution of 0.01 degrees, or it can be maintained in a constant velocity mode at rates from 1 to 16 degrees per second. The velocity loop was implemented as a phase locked loop, and the command rate is entered as a frequency - …

Intermodulation Analysis Of Class C Transistorized Amplifiers With Applications To V.H.F. Amplifiers, Robert Hopkins Wollam Jan 1974

Intermodulation Analysis Of Class C Transistorized Amplifiers With Applications To V.H.F. Amplifiers, Robert Hopkins Wollam

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The paper discusses the theoretical analysis and the experimental work done to describe the cause of intermodulation distortion in class C transistorized amplifiers. A mathematical basis for the intermodulation was derived using a single frequency input and a second frequency introduced into the output of the amplifier. It was followed by experimental work performed to justify the theory. These experiments used both pulsed and sinusoidal drives as amplifier inputs. Also, a feedback method along with the transistor's operating point was shown to reduce the intermodulation distortion produced by the amplifier. Finally, a short discussion on the results and some of …

Design Considerations For Extended Aeration-Denitrification Facilities, Frank Paul Huttner Jan 1974

Design Considerations For Extended Aeration-Denitrification Facilities, Frank Paul Huttner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Design considerations and operating procedures were investigated for nitrogen removal in an extended aeration-denitrification facility. Both past and present removal efficiencies were evaluated for the facility, along with capital and operating cost data. The findings of this research indicate that at very long detention times, significant nitrification and denitrification occurred in the plant without the use of chemicals. Overall nitrogen, BOD5, and suspended solids removals were extremely high. The significance of this research is that future plants may achieve high rates of nitrogen removal through innovative design and operating procedures without the use of costly chemicals. However, capital costs needed …

Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis Jan 1974

Development Of A Remote Sound Monitoring System, Joseph Owen Ellis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report explains the development of a sound measuring system for continuous monitoring of sound levels. Dedicated telephone lines are used for data transmission so that sound level data can be monitored at installations far from the area of concern. This allows the sound sensing equipment to be left unattended and thereby greatly reduces the manpower costs of operation. That predetermined data conditions can be detected when they occur and corrective action can be taken immediately at the data receiving installation further justifies the method used. Background information and general need for such a system are discussed. Growing public concern …

Aging Characteristics Of Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Paul Leray Reynolds Jan 1974

Aging Characteristics Of Aluminum-Silver Alloys, Paul Leray Reynolds

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an Al-6 wt. % Ag alloy and an Al-14 wt. % Ag alloy has been investigated. Results show that the tensile properties of these alloys were approximately the same whether they were given single or two-step aging treatments. Reversion treatments applied to the fully age-hardened Al-14 % Ag alloy after 15 minutes at various temperatures between 200 and 350 °C showed two maxima in the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength. It is believed that this result was caused by two transformation processes occurring simultaneously: i.e., …

Image Analysis And Improvement Of A Point Light Source Visual Flight Simulator, Steve K. Butrimas Jan 1974

Image Analysis And Improvement Of A Point Light Source Visual Flight Simulator, Steve K. Butrimas

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has long been desired to simulate a non-preprogrammed controllable visual scene of the real world in a limited area for the purpose of training, in particular for aviation training. There presently exists a point light source projection system designed to accomplish this, however due to physical limitations, the display image, as compared to the corresponding real world scene which is being simulated, is somewhat distorted and limited. This point light source system is analyzed to determine the distortions and deviations from reality and methods are proposed to improve the display by minimizing the distortions and deviations.

Bulletin No 3887 - Cattle Yard Construction, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture Jan 1974

Bulletin No 3887 - Cattle Yard Construction, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Good cattle yards allow animals to be handled quietly, safely and efficiently. If yards are well designed, animal uneasiness is minimised and so, too, are frayed tempers.

This bulletin outlines general points of cattle yard design and construction. There are many and varied cattle yard designs in use—many good ones and some bad ones. This bulletin should help in avoiding the bad ones.

Porous Sand-Asphalt Mixtures, James H. Havens Jan 1974

Porous Sand-Asphalt Mixtures, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Size is relative. Densely graded sand-asphalts are relatively similar to conventional, bituminous concretes. Porous sand-asphalts possess the same attributes as other porous, bituminous mixtures. Surely, sand-asphalt mixtures, can be designed to be as porous as the so-called, open-graded plantmix seals. Particle shape and texture otherwise define skid-resistance. Stability remains an assurance against scaling. Stability is assured by maximum utilization of filler-bitumen ratio and the stiffness of asphalt cement.

Water Resources Planning, Social Goals, And Indicators: Methodological Development And Empirical Test, Henry P. Caulfield

Reports

A methodology for comprehensive evaluation of water resources development and use (Techcom) has been developed and partially field tested. A model of societal goals consists of nine primary goals successively articualted into increasingly specific subgoals. Achievement of subgoals is perceived as affected by measurable social indicators whose values are perturbed by water resources actions. Linking the elements of the goals taxon by connectives result in an evaluation system. historical, political and philosophical considerations of the proposed system are discussed in Part I. Part II describes the results of the Rio Grande of New Mexico test including public perception and weighting …

Recommendations For Implementation Of Uniform Project Identification From The Upi Task Force, Herbert F. Southgate Jan 1974

Recommendations For Implementation Of Uniform Project Identification From The Upi Task Force, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For years project identifications have been based upon county, section, subsection, and phase of work. While this system worked well in the beginning, overlay constructions, widening efforts, etc. have caused overlapping of projects to the point that identification of a given portion of a highway has become very difficult. Furthermore, each of the many separate phases of work has its own project number and may not be so readily identifiable as the succeeding work phase.

Management came to realize there was a need for a numbering identification system that would be readily understandable. The direct result was the development of …

Knudsen Effusion Study Of The Vaporization Of Cdo(S), R. Tom Coyle, Gordon Lewis

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Knudsen effusion studies were conducted on CdO(s) in fused‐SiO2 Knudsen cells from 889 to 1110 K. The orifice size was varied; the largest cell orifice yielded a calculated pressure significantly lower than could be accounted for by experimental error. Average‐slope‐ and average‐free‐energy‐function‐based values of ΔHc298 were 86.9 ± 1.1 and 88.8 ± 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively. The data from the present work were combined with those of previous investigators using a method discussed by McCreary and Thorn; a ΔHc298 of 88.2 ± 0.2 kcal/mol was obtained. Using this combined value for ΔHc298 and ΔSc298= 51.40 ± 0.1 eu (obtained from the …

Detailed X-ray powder data for MgCl2·6H2O were obtained by diffractometry by use of CuKα radiation at 22°C. The data were indexed on a bimolecular monoclinic unit cell, space group C2/m, with a = 9.858 ± 0.001 Å; b = 7.107 ± 0.001 Å; c = 6.069 ± 0.001 Å; ß = 93° 47′ ± 10′. Calculated density was 1.591 g/cm3, compared with a measured density of 1.593 ± 0.003 g/cm3. © 1974, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Influence Of Oxygen Activity On The Sintering Of Mgcr2o4, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1974

Influence Of Oxygen Activity On The Sintering Of Mgcr2o4, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sintering behavior of MgCr2O4 powder compacts was investigated as a function of temperature, time, and oxygen activity. The results show that MgCr2O4 cannot be densified to >70% of theoretical density at temperatures up to 1700°C if the oxygen activity exceeds 10−6 atm. The oxygen activity must be decreased to <10−10 atm before densities exceeding 90% of theoretical can be achieved. Weight loss and X‐ray data indicated that maximum density occurred at an oxygen activity just above that where MgCr2O4 becomes unstable. Copyright © 1974, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
