Quantitative Peel Test For Thin Films/Layers Based On A Coupled Parametric And Statistical Study, Maysam Rezaee, Li Chih Tsai, Muhammad Istiaque Haider, Armin Yazdi, Ehsan Sanatizadeh, Nathan P. Salowitz

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Articles

The adhesion strength of thin films is critical to the durability of micro and nanofabricated devices. However, current testing methods are imprecise and do not produce quantitative results necessary for design specifications. The most common testing methods involve the manual application and removal of unspecified tape. This overcome many of the challenges of connecting to thin films to test their adhesion properties but different tapes, variation in manual application, and poorly controlled removal of tape can result in wide variation in resultant forces. Furthermore, the most common tests result in a qualitative ranking of film survival, not a measurement with …

Computer Science Faculty Research

Background: Understanding the complex biological mechanisms of cancer patient survival using genomic and clinical data is vital, not only to develop new treatments for patients, but also to improve survival prediction. However, highly nonlinear and high-dimension, low-sample size (HDLSS) data cause computational challenges to applying conventional survival analysis. Results: We propose a novel biologically interpretable pathway-based sparse deep neural network, named Cox-PASNet, which integrates high-dimensional gene expression data and clinical data on a simple neural network architecture for survival analysis. Cox-PASNet is biologically interpretable where nodes in the neural network correspond to biological genes and pathways, while capturing the nonlinear …

150 Years Since The Development Of The Periodic System Of Chemical Elements By D.I. Mendeleev, Yu. Ts. Oganesyan, Yu. E. Penionzhkevich

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

The year 2019 has been declared by UNESCO as the year of the Periodic Table of Elements. 150 years ago, an outstanding Russian scientist D.I. Mendeleev systematized the chemical elements known at that time by chemical properties and created a table of elements. Since then, almost 60 chemical elements have been added to those known 150 years ago. Now the table has 118 chemical elements, most of which were synthesized artificially, in particular, on charged particle accelerators. Especially vigorous growth in the synthesis and research of new heavy transfermium elements was observed during the last 20 years, when about 20 …

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

The paper presents the results of a study of the influence of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanostructures on the generation and transfer of charge carriers in the photoactive P3HT/PCBM layer. It was shown that the observed broadening and the shift in the maxima of the absorption spectra of P3HT/PCBM upon the addition of nanostructures to the polymer are associated with an increase in the degree of crystallization of the film. Using the method of impedance spectroscopy, it was found that CuPc nanostructures enhance the rate of recombination of charge carriers, which is probably due to the formation of surface defects. These …

For safe and effective use, it is imperative to not only measure the initial physicochemical and structural properties of nanomaterials, but also identify and quantify any property changes related to a loss of chemical and/or physical integrity during processing and usage conditions. In this study an assessment of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticle thermal stability using modulated differential scanning calorimetry (mDSC) and a controlled-heating system is conducted …

Failure Of High Strength Concrete Under Dynamic Uniaxial Compression, Colin Loeffler Dec 2019

Failure Of High Strength Concrete Under Dynamic Uniaxial Compression, Colin Loeffler

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

The failure strength of concrete materials has been widely shown to be dependent on experimental parameters such as specimen geometry and strain-rate. The effects of specimen geometry have been shown both theoretically and experimentally to be a result of the quasi-brittle nature of concrete. While the failure strength of concrete has been widely reported to increase significantly when deformed at high strain-rates, the physical mechanisms driving this phenomenon remain the source of debate amongst researchers. This means that constitutive models designed to predict this rate dependent behavior are not based on the real physical mechanisms that drive this behavior but …

Technology-Dependent Quantum Logic Synthesis And Compilation, Kaitlin Smith Dec 2019

Technology-Dependent Quantum Logic Synthesis And Compilation, Kaitlin Smith

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The models and rules of quantum computation and quantum information processing (QIP) differ greatly from those that govern classical computation, and these differences have caused the implementation of quantum processing devices with a variety of new technologies. Many platforms have been developed in parallel, but at the time of writing, one method of quantum computing has not shown to be superior to the rest. Because of the variation that exists between quantum platforms, even between those of the same technology, there must be a way to automatically synthesize technology-independent quantum designs into forms that are capable of physical realization on …

Reducing The Production Cost Of Semiconductor Chips Using (Parallel And Concurrent) Testing And Real-Time Monitoring, Qutaiba Khasawneh

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Consumer electronics changed the semiconductor industry by developing many new challenges for consumer products. One of the main challenges in the consumer product is that it propelled the volume of production to massive production, e.g. hundreds of millions of cell phones are produced yearly. Combined with the overproduction of consumer products, price pressure is another challenge for consumer products. Many of the new techniques used in the design and fabrication enabled the integration of more devices in the same chips. This reduced the cost of the chips, lowered the power consumption, increased the circuit operation speed, enabled more reliable implementation, …

Concerns about the effects of global warming provide a strong case to consider how best nuclear power could be applied to marine propulsion. Currently, there are persistent efforts worldwide to combat global warming, and that also includes the commercial freight shipping sector. In an effort to decarbonize the marine sector, there are growing interests in replacing the contemporary, traditional propulsion systems with nuclear propulsion systems. The latter system allows freight ships to have longer intervals before refueling; subsequently, lower fuel costs, and minimal carbon emissions. Nonetheless, nuclear propulsion systems have remained largely confined to military vessels. It is highly desirable …

Widening Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges – Extension Of Pier Cap Beams With Cfrp Composites, Cheng Tan Dec 2019

Widening Of Reinforced Concrete Bridges – Extension Of Pier Cap Beams With Cfrp Composites, Cheng Tan

Dissertations - ALL

Increase in traffic load dictates widening highway bridges rather than construction of new bridges, as it offers an economical solution. Highway bridge widening is usually accomplished by the construction of additional new bridge piers, however, large amount of construction work and extensive use of heavy plant and machinery could result in very high cost. For limited widening of bridges, e.g. addition of one driving/emergency lane, extension of the pier cap beam offers an attractive solution. Due to additional load resulting from the widened bridge, strengthening of extended cap beams may be needed. In addition, depending on the strength of the …

Locating People Of Interest In Social Networks, Pivithuru Wijegunawardana Dec 2019

Locating People Of Interest In Social Networks, Pivithuru Wijegunawardana

Dissertations - ALL

By representing relationships between social entities as a network, researchers can analyze them using a variety of powerful techniques. One key problem in social network analysis literature is identifying certain individuals (key players, most influential nodes) in a network. We consider the same problem in this dissertation, with the constraint that the individuals we are interested in identifying (People of Interest) are not necessarily the most important nodes in terms of the network structure. We propose an algorithm to find POIs, algorithms to collect data to find POIs, a framework to model POI behavior and an algorithm to predict POIs …
