Surface Geometry And Heat Flux Effect On Thin Wire Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Subcooled Water In Microgravity, Troy Munro, Andrew Fassman Mar 2011

Surface Geometry And Heat Flux Effect On Thin Wire Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Subcooled Water In Microgravity, Troy Munro, Andrew Fassman

Presentations

The motivation of this nucleate boiling research is to understand the effects of surface geometry and heat flux as applied to a thin wire heater. This will further the understanding of the fundamental behaviors of boiling onset, steady state heat transfer, and bubble dynamics with respect to nucleate boiling with the goal of creating efficient thermal management systems for future space applications. Using three different thin platinum wire geometries and five different power levels, subcooled water was boiled over a period of approximately 30 seconds for 15 parabolic arcs to simulate microgravity. To represent the trends in bubbles behavior across …

Communication Device, Sandy Ferguson, Marina Vasilchenko, Quinn Anderson Apr 2010

Communication Device, Sandy Ferguson, Marina Vasilchenko, Quinn Anderson

Service-Learning Program

The purpose of our project was to provide Charlie with a device that he could talk with others. Because we felt like there was little engineering in this, we decided to provide an arm attachment to hold the device so that Charlie would be able to use the device without having to have help. We needed to design an arm that would attach to the wheel chair in a way that it would be secure and also not be in the way of his wheels, armrest, or the chairs controls. We were able to find a device that would be …

Opening The Door, Robert Gubbels, Tate Mackay, Chance Bohr, Jake Broyles Apr 2010

Opening The Door, Robert Gubbels, Tate Mackay, Chance Bohr, Jake Broyles

Service-Learning Program

Josiah mainly has problems opening the doors at the Morrison Center, its doors have a specific handle he cannot get on his own. The handle is vertical and is about nine inches in length and four inches wide; it has ridges on the front for grip and a lip on the back. He wants a device that attaches to the handle that is connected to a rope where his service dog then pulls the door open. The item will have to be easily applicable and removable for simple use since Josiah has limited movement in his hands.

Powering The Future: The Fabrication Of A Novel Passive Micro Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell, Zachary Chin May 2009

Powering The Future: The Fabrication Of A Novel Passive Micro Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell, Zachary Chin

Senior Honors Projects

The scope of this research includes principles of operation, areas of enhancement, and the fabrication processes of micro direct ethanol fuel cells. This research spreads light on the technology of fuel cells, offers methods to aide the performance of the direct ethanol fuel cell, and provides the method to produce an enhanced micro direct ethanol fuel cell power supply. The proposed micro direct ethanol fuel cell provides power independent of its orientation and without external fluid pumps. In satisfying these details the fuel cell system is entirely sealed within a small package fabricated using rapid prototyping technology and operates solely …

New Freedom: An Investigation Into The World Of Prosthetics, Jenna Marcus May 2008

New Freedom: An Investigation Into The World Of Prosthetics, Jenna Marcus

Senior Honors Projects

Prosthetics dates back thousands of years, with some of the earliest recorded devices dating back to the ancient Egyptians. The devices are used to replace a limb that may have been lost due to a variety of reasons. Of course, much has changed since the basic wooden devices. What is exceptionally fascinating about prosthetics and orthotics is that the field is always changing and become more advanced; it truly has infinite potential. Prosthetics has evolved over many centuries to be what it is today, but where will the technology go in the future?

Focusing on one area of prosthetics, specifically …

Using Agent Based Simulation And Game Theory Analysis To Study Information Sharing In Organizations – The Infoscape, Richard Donald Jolly, Wayne W. Wakeland Jan 2008

Using Agent Based Simulation And Game Theory Analysis To Study Information Sharing In Organizations – The Infoscape, Richard Donald Jolly, Wayne W. Wakeland

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Information sharing in organizations, especially the impact of sharing freely versus not sharing, was studied using game theory and agent based simulation. A game theoretic analysis was performed, and Netlogo simulations were carried out wherein some agents hoarded information while others shared information. As expected, sharing was found to greatly increase the overall amount of information within the organization. Unexpectedly, agents who share acquire more information than hoarders. This is due to the synergy that develops between groups of agents who are sharing with each other. The density of the agents is important-as the density increases, the probability increases that …
