The Critical Role Of Cubesat Spacecraft In A Multi-Tier Mission For Mars Exploration, Jeremy Straub Nov 2014

The Critical Role Of Cubesat Spacecraft In A Multi-Tier Mission For Mars Exploration, Jeremy Straub

Jeremy Straub

A multi-tier architecture is under development (with similar craft heterogeneity to Fink's work on ‘tier scalable’ missions) which will facilitate autonomous local control of multiple heterogeneous craft. This mission architecture has been developed with a Mars mission in mind and has included CubeSats in a variety of critical mission roles.

Two concepts will be presented: the addition of CubeSats to a larger-scale multi-tier mission, where the CubeSats serve a supporting role and a mission driven by CubeSat orbital capabilities. In the first, CubeSats are utilized to augment the area of spatial coverage that can be obtained and the temporal coverage …

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen Sep 2014

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen

Rafeeq I Roberts

The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Building on our previous research into music and film, we have found that many researchers have looked into the question of how music affects emotions (Eschrich et al., 2008; Have, 2008; …

Considering The Educational Benefits Of A Cubesat Program, Jeremy Straub, Samudra Haque, Christopher K. Dinelli Apr 2014

Considering The Educational Benefits Of A Cubesat Program, Jeremy Straub, Samudra Haque, Christopher K. Dinelli

Jeremy Straub

This presentation will provide an overview of work performed at the University of North Dakota with regards to the characterization of educational benefits from small spacecraft development efforts. We report on efforts to characterize benefits that ensued from participation for personal extracurricular enrichment, as part of a formal class (on project management), as part of multiple senior design projects, for independent study credit and for satisfying class project requirements. This assessment has been performed using a standard questionnaire for student research participation as well as custom questionnaires related to program focus areas. We have also analyzed student course performance, where …

Subsurface Infiltration Vaults: Puttin' Water In It's Place, Ryan Benton Miles, Thomas James Lakas Jr, Matt Ellison, Callie Naomi Jernigan Apr 2014

Subsurface Infiltration Vaults: Puttin' Water In It's Place, Ryan Benton Miles, Thomas James Lakas Jr, Matt Ellison, Callie Naomi Jernigan

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Recent EPA regulations require the infiltration of the first inch of rainfall from each storm event occurring on all new development sites. Subsurface infiltration vaults are an effective strategy for increasing residential stormwater infiltration according to those regulations. These vaults are an alternative to common Best Management Practices (BMP) such as rain gardens and green roofs. The vaults are corrugated plastic arches with front and side walls extending from the arch to the soil surface. These arches will be placed in a trench and covered with gravel and cement. This design improves upon existing subsurface vault designs by enhancing applicability …

Staged Data Warehousing With Gigabytes Of Longitudinal Data, Tyson Spoelma Apr 2014

Staged Data Warehousing With Gigabytes Of Longitudinal Data, Tyson Spoelma

2014 Presentations

The GVSU Offshore Wind Assessment Project buoy generates approximately 20 gigabytes of raw, longitudinal data each year. It has been running from the end of 2011 to early 2014 with potentially continuing operation for several years. Our data warehousing measures receives the data as unindexed files with loosely defined variable sets to an organized database with standardized message types and date span folders. In order to utilize and share our large data most efficiently, we created a streamlined database file structure for internal analytical use and a web based data retrieval system for portable external environment use.
