Macromolecular crystallographicy is a unique tool for imaging the structures of proteins and nucleic acids. Images are obtained from the Fourier transform of the diffraction pattern of the crystal by use of X-ray, neutron, and / or electron scattering. When X-ray and neutron scattering are used only diffraction amplitudes are experimentally measured, and phases have to be obtained. Multiple isomorphous replacement (MIR) has been the technique of choice for solving this phase problem in the determination of most macromolecular structures. This study identified and compared the level of importance and frequency of performance of 34 selected quality engineering tasks in the present and five years hence and determined potential catalysts for any expected change between the present and the future. Two sample groups of practicing certified quality engineers working for manufacturing companies in the United States were surveyed in three rounds to obtain the data. Group I consisted of 86 engineers working for companies that had been identified as leaders in product quality in a 1985 Gallup study. Group II consisted of 96 engineers from other companies.

A large important blanking die for production of multiwick stoves oil tanks was damaged beyond repair during normal maintenance. A replacement die could not be made available immediately. Initially an alternative blank production system based upon the adaptation of the inhouse and locally available tools was set up. Subsequently a temporary low cost and a permanent replacement blanking die was designed, developed and manufactured out of pad welding of mild steel plate. Recommendations have been drawn in light of the experiences gained in the deployment of these appropriate methods.

Distributive Mixing Performance Of Rubber Internal Mixers, B Mutagahywa

Results of experiments to study the distributive mixing performance of Internal mixers are reported in this paper. Distributive mixing was assessed by monitoring the uniformity of sulphur distribution throughout rubber mixes subjected to a range of rotor revolutions. The results indicate that distributive mixing in a well controlled Internal mixer is rapid and unlikely to be a source of mix variability.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not a relationship exists between the time of an industrial injury and a specific position on the biorhythm scale known as a critical day.

Ninety-six employees who worked at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours Plant in Parlin, New Jersey served as a test group during 1980. In order to determine if a relationship did exist, the subjects' biorhythmic cycles for 1980 were charted and then their injury performance was monitored during that year to see if the injury date corresponded with a critical day. There are several manufacturing processes (crystallization, spray drying, freeze drying, and closed crystallization) that are used to produce a sterile antibiotic powder. A pharmaceutical manufacturer is faced with the problem of deciding which process is best suited for their operations. Two approaches are presented in this study to handle this priority level reordering analysis.
