Analytical Modeling Of A Novel Elastohydrodynamic Seal Design For Supercritical Co2 Power Cycles, Ikenna C. Ejiogu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles show great potential for higher plant efficiencies and power densities for a wide range of power generation applications such as fossil fuel power plants, nuclear power production, solar power, and geothermal power generation. sCO2 leakage has been one of the main concerns in such applications, penalizing the cycle efficiencies. The effect of the seal leakage on the cycle efficiency could be as high as 0.65% for a utility sCO2 power cycle. Therefore, there is a pressing need for effective sealing solutions to get the full benefit of sCO2 power …

A General Coupling Methodology For Unsteady Aerostructural Optimization With Analytic Derivatives, Taylor Mcdonnell, Adam Cardoza, Denis-Gabriel Caprace, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Multidisciplinary design optimization offers a comprehensive approach for designing complex aerostructural systems such as wind turbines. Gradient-based multidisciplinary design optimization can be used to optimize complex systems using large numbers of design variables. However, the convergence of gradient-based optimization methods to an optimal solution is highly dependent on the accuracy of the provided derivatives. In this paper, we propose a general method for creating unsteady coupled systems for steady-state, eigenvalue, and time-domain analyses. We then describe how highly accurate derivatives may be obtained from these analyses using a combination of automatic differentiation and analytic methods (including the unsteady adjoint). Finally, …

Permeability, Structural Changes, Flow Regime Transitions In Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers And A Model For Predicting Trapped Saturation For Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Karrar Takleef Alofari
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Proper water management in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell is important to achieve high performance. Understanding the percolation of the produced water at the cathode catalyst layer (CL) is critical for any robust water management technique. In this study, an ex-situ experimental setup is used to study percolation in the CL at different injection rates and relative humidity (RH) conditions. The results show that increasing the flow rate force the liquid to flow through the bulk of the pores due to the dominant viscous effect. On the other hand, at low injection rates, the capillary becomes dominant and liquid …

Overpopulation, intensive industrial water usage and climate change are some of the occurrences that are exacerbating global water scarcity. By 2050, the United Nations predicts that over 6 billion people will be affected by water scarcity. Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered by oceans yet its water remains unusable due to the high salinity of seawater. Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the most common method of desalinating water but is dependent on non-renewable generated electricity to meet its high energy requirements. The majority of the power supplied to desalination plants is generated using emission-heavy fuels. Given the UN’s goal …

Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Wayne State University Dissertations
Sound source localization is typically conducted in open space so that the line of sight is not blocked among individual sensors. This research presents a new technology that enables one to see acoustically through a solid Plexiglass enclosure to locate a sound source stationed inside at some arbitrarily selected locations. By using SODAR technology, non-invasive laser-assisted microphones, analog, and digital signal processing (band-pass filtering, fast Fourier transform algorithm, cross-correlations, and triangulations) satisfactory sound source localization results were obtained. In this project, the enclosure walls were flat; only the azimuth angle of a sound source could be determined. To obtain the …

Wayne State University Dissertations
Battery safety studies of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) related to mechanical abusive loadinginvolving contact compression of hard objects, bending and nail penetration usually show that LIBs can withstand some mechanical deformation prior to internal short circuit (ISC). Stress or strain-based criteria has been suggested to understand local conditions between the anode, cathode and the separator due such abusive mechanical loading. A strain-based criterion has also been developed at Wayne State and reported in open literature (Newaz et al.) Focus of such work has been to determine strain levels that may rupture the separator putting in contact the anode and cathode leading …
