Morphologic Clustering Of Earcanals Using Deep Learning Algorithm To Design Artificial Ears Dedicated To Earplugs Attenuation Measurement, Bastien Poissenot-Arrigoni, Chun Hong Law, Djamal Berbiche, Franck Sgard, Olivier Doutres

Études primaires

Designing earplugs adapted for the widest number of earcanals requires acoustical test fixtures (ATFs) geometrically representative of the population. Most existing ATFs are equipped with unique sized straight cylindrical earcanals, considered representative of average human morphology, and are therefore unable to assess how earplugs can fit different earcanal morphologies. In this study, a methodology to cluster earcanals as a function of their morphologies with the objective of designing artificial ears dedicated to sound attenuation measurement is developed and applied to a sample of Canadian workers’ earcanals. The earcanal morphologic indicators that correlate with the attenuations of six models of commercial …

Computational Modeling Of Respiratory Airflow In Human Distal Airways Using Hybrid Lung Model, Adnan Islam Jan 2022

Computational Modeling Of Respiratory Airflow In Human Distal Airways Using Hybrid Lung Model, Adnan Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A major challenge in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of the human respiratory system is the complex variation of geometric scale from the trachea to the peripheral airways. The current literature on image-based lung flow analysis is limited to a few (typically 5) generations beyond the trachea. Such studies, which are limited largely by computational intensity and computational cost, also have limited accuracy. In this study we propose a hybrid methodology that enables CFD analysis from the middle to the distal airways through to the alveolar level. A hybrid lung model is generated where the middle airways are reconstructed …

This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a partially wetting polymer droplet driven over a nanostructured interface. We consider the bead-spring model to represent a polymeric liquid that partially wets a rough surface composed of a periodic array of spherical particles. Results show that at sufficiently small values of external force, the droplet remains pinned at the particle's surface, whereas above the threshold its motion consists of alternating periods of pinning and rapid displacements between neighboring particles. The latter process involves large periodic variation of the advancing and receding contact angles due to the attachment …

One of the technological challenges in the widespread application of additive manufacturing is the formation of undesired material microstructure and defects. Specifically, in metal additive manufacturing, the microstructural formation of columnar grains in Ti-6Al-4V is common and results in anisotropic mechanical properties and a reduction in properties such as ductility and endurance limit. This work presents the application of hexagonal and circular arrays of synchronized lasers to alter the microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V in favor of equiaxed grains. An anisotropic heat transfer model obtains the temporal/spatial temperature distribution and constructs the solidification map for various process parameters, including laser power, laser …

To date, AM of magnetocaloric regenerators for magnetic refrigeration (an energy-efficient alternative to the conventional vapor-compression cooling technology), remains a challenge. There are several magnetic refrigerator device designs in existence today that are predicted to be highly energy-efficient, on condition that suitable working materials can be developed. This challenge in manufacturing …

Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang Jan 2022

Type Iii And Iv Deformation Twins In Minerals And Metals, John P. Hirth, Greg Hirth, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Type IV twins are defined and shown to exist in triclinic crystal systems, as well as in some monoclinic and trigonal systems. Here, we focus on Pericline twins in triclinic plagioclase as an example. Type IV twins are associated with the irrationality of one of the twinning elements that is rational for a type II twin. The formation of type IV twins is accomplished through the shear on a K2 plane produced by the motion of twinning disconnections on a K1 plane, followed by rotational partitioning. The same systems where type IV twins are present also have type III twins …

Emissivity Prediction Of Functionalized Surfaces Using Artificial Intelligence, Greg Acosta, Andrew Reicks, Miguel Moreno, Alireza Borjali, Craig Zuhlke, Mohammad Ghashami

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Tuning surface emissivity has been of great interest in thermal radiation applications, such as thermophotovoltaics and passive radiative cooling. As a low-cost and scalable technique for manufacturing surfaces with desired emissivities, femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) has recently drawn enormous attention. Despite the versatility offered by FLSP, there is a knowledge gap in accurately predicting the outcome emissivity prior to fabrication. In this work, we demonstrate the immense advantage of employing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to predict the emissivity of complex surfaces. For this aim, we used FLSP to fabricate 116 different aluminum samples. A comprehensive dataset was established by …

Construction Of A Peridynamic Model For Viscous Flow, Jiangming Zhao, Adam Larios, Florin Bobaru Ph.D. Jan 2022

Construction Of A Peridynamic Model For Viscous Flow, Jiangming Zhao, Adam Larios, Florin Bobaru Ph.D.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We derive the Eulerian formulation for a peridynamic (PD) model of Newtonian viscous flow starting from fundamental principles: conservation of mass and momentum. This formulation is different from models for viscous flow that utilize the so-called “peridynamic differential operator” with the classical Navier- Stokes equations. We show that the classical continuity equation is a limiting case of the PD one, assuming certain smoothness conditions. The PD model for viscous flow is calibrated to the classical Navier-Stokes equations by enforcing linear consistency for the viscous stress term. Couette and Poiseuille flows, and incompressible fluid flow past a regular lattice of cylinders …
