Using Obstacle Trenches For Enhancing Microplastic Trapping In Microwells, Teeraphat Kongsaktrakul
Using Obstacle Trenches For Enhancing Microplastic Trapping In Microwells, Teeraphat Kongsaktrakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The particle trapping efficiency of microwells is influenced by the fluid flow velocity. If the flow velocity is too slow, trapping will take longer. In contrast, if the flow velocity is too fast, the trapping efficiency will decrease. Therefore, deceleration near the microwells is important for increasing trapping efficiency. The aim of this study is to investigate important factors that affect local flow velocity and trapping efficiency. This includes the presence of obstacle trenches, flow rates, particle concentrations, particle sizes, and surface materials. Two models were investigated and compared: one with triangular obstacle trenches placed in front of the microwells …

Fabrication Of Smooth Sac305 Thin Film Via Magnetron Sputtering, M. Ojha, A. A. Elmustafa
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
SAC305 (96.5 wt% Sn, 3 wt% Ag, 0.5 wt%Cu) solder is increasingly becoming popular due to its reliability good characteristics and performance in addition to the environmental concerns and regulations that restrict the use of lead in nano/microelectronic products. In nano/microelectronics, manufacturing smooth solder coatings free of defects such as voids and cracks, which can compromise joint reliability is crucial. Magnetron sputtering offers a high degree of control over film thickness and composition, resulting in films with excellent uniformity and adhesion. Despite these advantages, fabricating continuous and robust SAC305 films using magnetron sputtering remains a difficult task with limited research …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (USMs) are actuators that use ultrasonic frequency piezoelectric vibration-generated waves to transform electrical energy into rotary or translating motion. USMs receive more attention because they offer distinct qualities over traditional magnet-coil-based motors, such as miniaturization, great accuracy, speed, non-magnetic nature, silent operation, straightforward construction, broad temperature operations, and adaptability. This review study focuses on the principle of USMs and their classifications, characterization, fabrication methods, applications, and future challenges. Firstly, the classifications of USMs, especially, standing-wave, traveling-wave, hybrid-mode, and multi-degree-of-freedom USMs, are summarized, and their respective functioning principles are explained. Secondly, finite element modeling analysis for design and …

Engineering is becoming increasingly cross-disciplinary, requiring students to develop skills in multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical engineering students having to learn the basics of electronics, instrumentation, and coding) and interprofessional skills to integrate perspectives from people outside their field. In the workplace, engineering teams are frequently multidisciplinary, and often, people from outside of engineering are part of the team that brings a product to market. Additionally, teams are often diverse in age, race, gender, and in other areas. Teams that creatively utilize the contrasting perspectives and ideas arising from these differences can positively affect team performance and generate solutions effective …

External Direct Sum Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Coupled Differential-Difference Equations, Keqin Gu, Huan Phan-Van
External Direct Sum Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Coupled Differential-Difference Equations, Keqin Gu, Huan Phan-Van
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
This article discusses the invariant subspaces that are restricted to be external direct sums. Some existence conditions are presented that facilitate finding such invariant subspaces. This problem is related to the decomposition of coupled differential-difference equations, leading to the possibility of lowering the dimensions of coupled differential-difference equations. As has been well documented, lowering the dimension of coupled differential-difference equations can drastically reduce the computational time needed in stability analysis when a complete quadratic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is used. Most known ad hoc methods of reducing the order are special cases of this formulation.
Structured Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Systems With Time Delays And Uncertainties, Huan Phan-Van, Keqin Gu
Structured Invariant Subspace And Decomposition Of Systems With Time Delays And Uncertainties, Huan Phan-Van, Keqin Gu
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
This article discusses invariant subspaces of a matrix with a given partition structure. The existence of a nontrivial structured invariant subspace is equivalent to the possibility of decomposing the associated system with multiple feedback blocks such that the feedback operators are subject to a given constraint. The formulation is especially useful in the stability analysis of time-delay systems using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach where computational efficiency is essential in order to achieve accuracy for large scale systems. The set of all structured invariant subspaces are obtained (thus all possible decompositions are obtained as a result) for the coupled differential-difference equations …

Accurate numerical solution of parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations governing two-dimensional heat transfer is critical for engineering simulations but computationally challenging. This work employs key numerical techniques finite differences, conjugate gradients, and Crank-Nicolson time stepping to solve the heat diffusion equation and analyze method performance. The Poisson equation is discretized using second-order central finite differences and solved with the conjugate gradient approach to determine the steady state solution. The transient heat equation is integrated in time via the Crank-Nicolson implicit scheme, also utilizing conjugate gradients. The methods effectively compute solutions matching analytical and boundary conditions. Convergence and stability are …

Effect Of Resin Bleed Out On Compaction Behavior Of The Fiber Tow Gap Region During Automated Fiber Placement Manufacturing, Von Clyde Jamora, Virginia Rauch, Sergii G. Kravchenko, Oleksandr G. Kravchenko
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Automated fiber placement is a state-of-the-art manufacturing method which allows for precise control over layup design. However, AFP results in irregular morphology due to fiber tow deposition induced features such as tow gaps and overlaps. Factors such as the squeeze flow and resin bleed out, combined with large non-linear deformation, lead to morphological variability. To understand these complex interacting phenomena, a coupled multiphysics finite element framework was developed to simulate the compaction behavior around fiber tow gap regions, which consists of coupled chemo-rheological and flow-compaction analysis. The compaction analysis incorporated a visco-hyperelastic constitutive model with anisotropic tensorial prepreg viscosity, which …

An experimental investigation of interlaminar toughness for post-cured through-thickness reinforcement (PTTR) skin-stringer sub-element is presented. The improvement in the crack resistance capability of skin-stringer samples was shown through experimental testing and finite element analysis (FEA) modeling. The performance of PTTR was evaluated on a pristine and initial-disbond of the skin-stringer specimen. A macro-scale pin-spring modeling approach was employed in FEA using a non-linear spring to capture the pin failure under the mixed-mode load. The experimental results showed a 15.5% and 20.9% increase in strength for the pristine-PTTR and initial-disbond PTTR specimens, respectively. The modeling approach accurately represents the overall structural …

MOSFETS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors) are a popular type of active current carrying device. The need for higher performance and faster switching times has led to designs which use low gate source voltage where heat conduction is dominated by charge carriers. The concentration of charge carriers increases with an increase in temperature, causing more current to flow as the temperature increases. As a result, the device draws more current as temperature increases, causing further temperature rise. As the device temperature increased, it would draw more current and cause further temperature rise. This is a positive feedback loop which …
Numerical Simulation And Optimization Of Fin Configurations For Enhanced Heat Sink Performance In Aluminum And Copper Materials, Rimpy Singh
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The constant evolution of data centers and high-power electronic systems has raised critical challenges in heat dissipation and thermal management. Single-phase immersion cooling, where electronic components are submerged in a thermally conductive but non-electrically conductive liquid (dielectric liquid), offers improved heat dissipation capabilities and emerges as a promising alternative to traditional air-cooling methods, which often fail to meet the thermal demands of densely packed, high-power systems. In pursuit of sustainable resource utilization on the Moon, this paper delves into modeling and characterization of particle size distribution (PSD) of lunar regolith simulants in an electrostatic system. a prototype electrostatic sieve was built and tested with four sample simulants mirroring properties of lunar mare and highland regolith. an alternating four-phase (90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees, 360 degrees) traveling square-wave was utilized for particle-directed transport to model the diverse trajectories of the particles. Numerically, we scrutinized how the distribution functions of the particles are manifested as the electrostatic field propagates, with a focus on three distinct particle ranges …

Moore’s law has predicted the growth of semiconductor industry for the last 50 years by providing a template for silicon scaling and homogenous system on chip integration of multiple circuits. Lately, this trend has been declining due to the increased power density and functionality and increasing chip size to accommodate this. Moving forward, heterogeneous integration of chiplets will improve the silicon yield by integrating multiple multi-functional chiplets that are of smaller area onto an interposer or a substrate in 2.5D, 3D or 3.5 D architectures. In this study, computational analysis is done on the impact of design parameters and material …

Investigating The Thermal Multibody Effects In Spherical Inclusions Of A Porous Matrix For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Nicholas Scholz
Open Access Master's Theses
As technology improves, there is a need for better and more efficient energy storage and lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the primary energy storage device. They have positive electrochemical properties, are easily accessible, and rechargeable. However, lithium-ion batteries have been known to fail, leading to research into the failure mechanisms. As some of these failure mechanisms, such as thermal runaway, depend on thermal interactions, this paper aims to investigates thermal multibody effects of spherical inclusions in a porous matrix to gain insight into thermal effects of a realistic lithium-ion battery microstructure. Analytical solutions to this problem, such as Maxwell’s thermal …
Propagation Of Vibro-Acoustic Energy In Ducts: Measurement, Simulation, And Attenuation Studies, Caoyang Li
Propagation Of Vibro-Acoustic Energy In Ducts: Measurement, Simulation, And Attenuation Studies, Caoyang Li
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Vibro-acoustic energy propagates through heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems through both airborne and structureborne paths. In this research, measurement and simulation studies are performed to better understand this propagation of energy and how to better attenuate the sound before it impacts building occupants.
First, a scaled-down experiment was developed to assist in the validation of numerical simulation models. A small source room was attached to a wooden duct with variable cross-sectional area. The sound power for both untreated and treated ductwork was measured using sound intensity scanning, and the insertion loss is the difference between untreated and treated …

Artificial Intelligence Enabled Machinery Fault Detection And Diagnosis Using Vibro-Acoustic Signals, Srinivasa Rao Ippili
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In various industries, the early detection of faults in rotating machinery is crucial to prevent system failures and ensure customer satisfaction. Typically, vibration measurement and diagnosis are employed for fault detection, but this process faces challenges in automation due to the complexity of installing and maintaining accelerometers, particularly in end-of-line quality control or pre-installed machinery health assessments. Acoustic signals, as a form of mechanical wave, offer an alternative for monitoring machinery while in operation. Unlike accelerometers, acoustic transducers are non-contact and easy to set up, enabling real-time data collection without interrupting equipment operation. However, utilizing acoustic signals in manufacturing poses …
Measurement And Simulation Of Aeroacoustic Sources Generated By Elementary Muffler Components, Seth Donkin
Measurement And Simulation Of Aeroacoustic Sources Generated By Elementary Muffler Components, Seth Donkin
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Mufflers and silencers are commonly used to control noise from sources such as internal combustion engines and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In these applications, flow interacts with muffler components generating aeroacoustic noise sources. In order to measure these sources in a lab setting, specialized flow rigs are designed to isolate aeroacoustic noise sources. Flow sometimes compromises muffler performance. However, muffler performance is sometimes improved because flow can increase the attenuation of some muffler elements such as perforates. To better understand the complicated impact of flow, the University of Kentucky developed a muffler test rig to measure insertion …
