Plastic Fiber Rolling For Concrete Reinforcement, Jeffery S. Thomas Jan 1996

Plastic Fiber Rolling For Concrete Reinforcement, Jeffery S. Thomas

Masters Theses

"Fiber reinforced concrete is gaining in acceptance and usage as its strength and toughness benefits are realized. Polypropylene fibers are currently the most commonly used fibers. However, the cost of virgin plastics limits the percent content that can be economically added to concrete. One would first believe that recycled plastics could offer a viable alternative to virgin-plastic fibers, but at present time extra selection and cleaning steps required to reprocess the recycled plastic into fibers makes it more expensive than virgin-plastic fibers. A fiber rolling process conceived and developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla has the potential of making recycled …

Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen Jan 1996

Hamiltonian Based Adaptive Critics For Missile Guidance, S. N. Balakrishnan, Jie Shen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Hamiltonian based adaptive critic structure is proposed for solving missile guidance problems. This structure consists of a supervisor neural network called 'critic' and a controller network called 'action'. Together they are used to solve model-based guidance problems. The advantage of this approach is that: i) the training data for each network is created by the other network, ii) the converged solutions yield near optimal guidance over the entire span of the training range, and iii) they can be used as feedback controllers though trained off-line. A main contribution is that we establish a direct link between traditional optimal control …

Non-Axisymmetric Matrix Cracking And Interface Debonding With Friction In Ceramic Composites, F. S. Ji, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani Jan 1996

Non-Axisymmetric Matrix Cracking And Interface Debonding With Friction In Ceramic Composites, F. S. Ji, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An three-dimensional analytical model based on the principle of minimum potential energy is developed and applied to determine the stress state in a discrete fiber/matrix composite cylinder subjected to axial tensile loading in the fiber direction and containing a non-symmetric transverse matrix crack and an interface debond. The friction over the debonded interface is incorporated into the analysis. The strain energy release rates associated with the matrix crack and the interface debonding under the combination of the applied load and the interface frictional force are computed. The strain energy release rate criterion has been employed to evaluate the critical applied …

An Interdisciplinary Solar Energy Project, William J. Hutzel Jan 1996

An Interdisciplinary Solar Energy Project, William J. Hutzel

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

An HVAC course, previously offered to students in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), has been re-structured to include students in Building Construction Management (BCM). A large project is always an integral part of this course, creating a unique opportunity for collaboration between two distinctly different groups of Technology students. This cooperation is particularly beneficial because MET and BCM graduates frequently cross paths during their professional careers. Many MET graduates operate and service heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment that was originally specified and installed by BCM graduates. This paper discusses and evaluates student interactions during a solar …

On The Effectiveness Of Dry Film Lubricant Coatings In Reducing Automotive Valve Train Wear, Evan Benstead, Martin L. Smith, Joseph Foyos, Omar S. Es-Said Jan 1996

On The Effectiveness Of Dry Film Lubricant Coatings In Reducing Automotive Valve Train Wear, Evan Benstead, Martin L. Smith, Joseph Foyos, Omar S. Es-Said

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works

The effect of three dry lubricants on automotive valve train wear resistance was studied experimentally. Scuffing wear occurs as the cam slides across the lifter face where the rotating motion of the camshaft is converted into the linear motion necessary to drive the cylinder head valves. This scuffing is caused by localized microscopic bonding between the skidding surfaces. It can be minimized by using dry film lubricant coatings to increase the boundary lubrication depth adjacent to the contact area. To compare valve train wear resistance in the laboratory, rotating cam lobes coated with dry lubricants--parkerization, spray-applied graphite coating, and brush-applied …

An Investigation Of Diameter Measurement Repeatability Using A Coordinate Measuring Machine And A Multi-Baseline Repeatability Assessment Methodology, Bruce Marsh Jan 1996

An Investigation Of Diameter Measurement Repeatability Using A Coordinate Measuring Machine And A Multi-Baseline Repeatability Assessment Methodology, Bruce Marsh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The need for reliable and consistent measurement has become more acute with the use of statistical process control (SPC), gage repeatability and reproducibility (Gage R&R) assessment, and high precision, computer-controlled gaging systems. Although it is often overlooked, the inspection methodology under which various features are inspected has an impact on Gage R&R results. This notion was confirmed when a 1993 thesis study substantiated inspection methodology as a source of measurement variability in direct computer-controlled, coordinate measuring machines (DCC/CMMs). Although this study explored a methodology to bring measurement variability under statistical control, the tested assessment methodology--single baseline repeatability assessment--was not validated. …

Experiments In The Coordinated Control Of An Underwater Arm/Vehicle System, Timothy W. Mclain, Stephen M. Rock, Michael J. Lee Jan 1996

Experiments In The Coordinated Control Of An Underwater Arm/Vehicle System, Timothy W. Mclain, Stephen M. Rock, Michael J. Lee

Faculty Publications

The addition of manipulators to small autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can pose significant control challenges due to hydrodynamic interactions between the arm and the vehicle. Experiments conducted at the monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) using the OTTER vehicle have shown that dynamical interactions between an arm and a vehicle can be very significant. For the experiments reported in this paper, a single-link "arm" was mounted on OTTER. Tests showed that for 90-degree, two-second repetitive slews of the arm, the vehicle would move as much as 18 degrees in roll and 14 degrees in yaw when no vehicle control was …

Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim Jan 1996

Application Of Reanalysis Techniques For Pattern Design Of Spot Welds, Young San Kim

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Extensive benchmarking on competitive cars has shown that the durability of vehicles, assembly-induced variations, and assembly cost are directly related to the quality and number of spot welds. On most luxury cars, approximately 4,500 to 5,000 spot welds are found. On less expensive cars, the range is from 3,500 to 4,500. These cars usually inherit more noise, rattles, squeaks, and other quality-related problems. These problems have motivated the search for a new capability to systematically place welds in the most critical areas, with a minimum number of welds for car bodies, while satisfying all performance requirements (e.g., stiffness, stress distribution, …

Numerical Simulation Of Complex, Three-Dimensional, Turbulent-Free Jets, Robert V. Wilson Jan 1996

Numerical Simulation Of Complex, Three-Dimensional, Turbulent-Free Jets, Robert V. Wilson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Three-dimensional, incompressible turbulent jets with rectangular and elliptical cross-section are simulated with a finite-difference numerical method. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved at low Reynoids numbers, whereas at high Reynolds numbers filtered forms of the equations are solved along with a sub-grid scale model to approximate the effects of the unresolved scales. A 2-N storage, third-order Runge-Kutta scheme is used for temporal discretization and a fourth-order compact scheme is used for spatial discretization. Although such methods are widely used in the simulation of compressible flows, the lack of an evolution equation for pressure or density presents particular difficulty in incompressible …

A Dual Neural Network Architecture For Linear And Nonlinear Control Of Inverted Pendulum On A Cart, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega Jan 1996

A Dual Neural Network Architecture For Linear And Nonlinear Control Of Inverted Pendulum On A Cart, S. N. Balakrishnan, Victor Biega

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of a self-contained dual neural network architecture for the solution of nonlinear optimal control problems is investigated in this study. The network structure solves the dynamic programming equations in stages and at the convergence, one network provides the optimal control and the second network provides a fault tolerance to the control system. We detail the steps in design and solve a linearized and a nonlinear, unstable, four-dimensional inverted pendulum on a cart problem. Numerical results are presented and compared with linearized optimal control. Unlike the previously published neural network solutions, this methodology does not need any external training, …

The Modeling Of Structural-Acoustic Interaction Using Coupled Fe/Be Method And Control Of Interior Acoustic Pressure Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Yucheng Shi Jan 1996

The Modeling Of Structural-Acoustic Interaction Using Coupled Fe/Be Method And Control Of Interior Acoustic Pressure Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Yucheng Shi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A coupled finite element (FE) and boundary element (BE) approach is presented to model full coupled structural/acoustic/piezoelectric systems. The dual reciprocity boundary element method is used so that the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the coupled system can be obtained, and to extend this approach to time dependent problems. The boundary element method is applied to interior acoustic domains, and the results are very accurate when compared with limited exact solutions. Structural--acoustic problems are then analyzed with the coupled finite element/boundary element method, where the finite element method models the structural domain and the boundary element method models the …

Gas And Liquid Phase Transport In Pulsed Fuel Sprays, Pete D. Jennings, James A. Drallmeier Jan 1996

Gas And Liquid Phase Transport In Pulsed Fuel Sprays, Pete D. Jennings, James A. Drallmeier

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An infrared extinction technique was used to characterize spatially and temporally the vapor phase of a transient fuel spray. Optical extinction data were taken at two laser wavelengths and compared to obtain fuel vapor partial pressure values averaged over the line-of-sight through the spray. A transient fuel injector spray was characterized at several axial positions with a spatial resolution of 0.125 cm and a temporal resolution of 0.2 ms. With the knowledge of an axisymmetric spray pulse, the line-of-sight averaged results were deconvoluted to obtain spatially resolved vapor pressure data. The same spray was also characterized using phase/doppler interferometry to …

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Aircraft Identification And Control, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1996

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Aircraft Identification And Control, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a class of modified Hopfield neural networks and their use in solving aircraft optimal control and identification problems. This class of networks consists of parallel recurrent networks which have variable dimensions that can be changed to fit the problems under consideration. It has a structure to implement an inverse transformation that is essential for embedding optimal control gain sequences. Equilibrium solutions are discussed. Energy minimization of the networks leads to identification of the system parameters. Numerical results are provided to identify the dynamics of an aircraft, and the corresponding optimal control is calculated online. Comparison of the …

Effect Of Inflow Pressure And Wall Heat Transfer On Shock-Induced Combustion/Detonation, B. S. Green, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1996

Effect Of Inflow Pressure And Wall Heat Transfer On Shock-Induced Combustion/Detonation, B. S. Green, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oblique detonation waves are possible ignition mechanisms for scramjet engines. Results from a numerical study of the effects of changing the inflow pressure on oblique detonation wave structure for supersonic flow of a stoichiometric hydrogen-air mixture over a flat plate followed by a ramp are presented. Viscous effects and finite-rate chemistry are considered. Inflow pressure is varied from 0.1 to 1 atmosphere for Mach 4 inflow over a 30-degree ramp. Also, the effect of wall heat transfer rate is examined by comparing adiabatic wall, and constant temperature wall solutions. A separation bubble forms at the intersection of the flat plate …

A Finite Element Model Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations In Rayleigh Flow, Carlos A. Gutierrez, Walter Eversman Jan 1996

A Finite Element Model Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations In Rayleigh Flow, Carlos A. Gutierrez, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The work reported here describes a portion of the development of a finite element model of thermoacoustic oscillations in ducted flows, including three dimensional geometries and nonuniform mean flows with steady heat addition. The thermoacoustic problem is not modeled by a form of the convected wave equation but instead by the conservation equations in primitive form. In this paper the three-dimensional model is reduced to one dimension, applicable to a uniform geometry, but allowing an axially nonuniform flow with sharp gradients in temperature, density, and Mach number. The steady mean flow is computed as a Rayleigh flow. Calculations are shown …

Target Profile Estimation Using Haar Functions, William R. Bockman, S. N. Balakrishnan, Christopher D'Souza, James Cloutier

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach to estimating the target acceleration in a maneuvering target model using Haar function partial summations to model the target acceleration is developed. A kinematic constraint is applied to the maneuvering target model and the effects of the use of this constraint are reviewed.

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1996

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently, there is considerable interest in scramjet engines for hypersonic aircraft and missiles. This paper presents preliminary calculations of the radiative heating of the walls of scramjet combustion chambers. The analysis assumes isothermal, constant property flow fields which are representative of actual combustor flow fields. The fuel is H2 and N2 is taken as inert. Temperature in the combustor is on the order of 2000 to 3000 K and pressure is of the order of 5 atm. The combustion products consist mainly of H2O and OH. These gases are strong radiators in the infrared. Radiation heating can be significant because …

Global Characteristics And Structure Of Hydrogen-Air Counterflow Diffusion Flames, J. Zhao, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, G. L. Pellett Jan 1996

Global Characteristics And Structure Of Hydrogen-Air Counterflow Diffusion Flames, J. Zhao, Kakkattukuzhy M. Isaac, G. L. Pellett

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A model based on similarity transformation, for the nitrogen-diluted, H2-air opposed-jet laminar counterflow diffusion flame (CFDF), was developed independently of earlier models, and numerically solved to study flame location and flame structure and extinction limits. Numerical stiffness is handled by a special treatment of the species production term. Flame location with respect to the stagnation plane is identified as an important parameter that governs H2-air diffusion flames, and physical explanations are given to show how flame location is affected by fuel dilution, strain rate, and Lewis number. Results show very good agreement with experimental extinction conditions. The effect of thermal …

Energy Efficient Office Building Design For A Hot And Humid Climate: Florida's New Energy Center, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Hot and humid climates, such as those in Florida, pose unique challenges to architects and engineers seeking energy efficient office building designs. The severe impact of internal loads on cooling, the intense solar conditions and the need for increased ventilation set against high relative humidities, all serve to limit the success of many conventional methods of reducing building energy use. To provide a high-visibility demonstration of potential energy design solutions, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) is building a state-of-the-art office complex for its new facility in Cocoa, Florida.

Methodology Evaluation For Remotely Estimating Water Quality Parameters In Estuarine Waters, Charles R. Bostater, Manuel Gimond Dec 1995

Methodology Evaluation For Remotely Estimating Water Quality Parameters In Estuarine Waters, Charles R. Bostater, Manuel Gimond

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Water absorption signatures were measured from water samples placed in a 50 cm pathlength cylindrical cuvette. Quantitative analysis of chlorophyll-a and dissolved organic matter (DOM- humic acid, fulvic acid, or tannic acid) was conducted using second derivative spectra followed by computation of double inflection ratio (DIR) spectra for all possible combinations of bands (from 362-1 1 15 nm with 252 channels). A specially designed instrument system is described which allows measurements of absorption of particulate and dissolved organic matter (chlorophyll-a and DOM) in a water sample. The ability of the system to allow measurement of absorption signatures and relating the …

Measured Cooling Energy Savings From Reflective Roofing Systems In Florida: Field And Laboratory Research Results, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

A series of field experiments in Florida have examined the impact of reflective roof coatings on air conditioning energy use in occupied homes. The tests were conducted on nine residential buildings from 1991 to 1994 using a before and after protocol where the roofs were whitened at mid-summer. Measured AC electrical savings in the buildings during similar pre- and post-retrofit periods averaged 19%, ranging from a low of 2% to a high of 43%. Utility peak coincident peak savings averaged 22%. Cooling energy reductions appear to depend on ceiling insulation level and roof solar reflectance, air duct system location and …

Smarts2, A Simple Model Of The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Of Sunshine, Florida Solar Energy Center, Christian Gueymard Dec 1995

Smarts2, A Simple Model Of The Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Of Sunshine, Florida Solar Energy Center, Christian Gueymard

FSEC Energy Research Center®

An upgraded spectral radiation model called SMARTS2 is introduced. The solar shortwave direct beam irradiance is calculated from spectral transmittance functions for the main extinction processes in the cloudless atmosphere: Rayleigh scattering, aerosol extinction, and absorption by ozone, uniformly mixed gases, water vapor, and nitrogen dioxide. Temperature-dependent or pressure-dependent extinction coefficients have been developed for all these absorbing gases, based on recent spectroscopic data obtained either directly from the experimental literature or, in a preprocessed form, from MODTRAN2, a state-of-the-art rigorous code. The NO2 extinction effect, in both the UV and visible, is introduced for the first time in a …
