Modified Reactive Sputter Deposition Of Titanium Nitride Thin Films Via Hipims With Kick-Pulse And Improvement Of The Structure-Zone Model, Andrew Miceli
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) sputtering methods have been commonplace in industry for several decades and widely studied in literature. Hard films of nitrides, such as titanium nitride (TiN), have been deposited using reactive DC sputtering onto cutting tools and medical devices extensively as well. For these applications, the films require excellent adhesion, high density, and high hardness. High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) has emerged over the last several years as a method to produce films with increased density and mechanical properties. Process-structure-property relationships for reactive HIPIMS are not yet well developed. Additionally, conventional HIPIMS suffers from relatively …

Size Distribution, Elemental Composition And Morphology Of Nanoparticles Separated From Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Shoeleh Assemi, Lei Pan, Xuming Wang, Titilayo Akinseye, Jan D. Miller
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Nanoparticles, defined as particles with one dimension below 100 nm, contribute little to the total mass concentration in respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) toxicological studies, but they could have a considerable part in the adverse health effects by RCMD inhalation. It has been shown that inhaled nanoparticles can penetrate deep into the lung and could plausibly contribute to acute and chronic pulmonary diseases by triggering oxidative stress formation and inducing inflammation. RCMD nanoparticles from samples collected in an underground mine in the United States were analyzed by a particle separation technique, field-flow fractionation (FFF), for size, morphology, and elemental composition. …

Objective
While facing personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, several institutions looked to PPE decontamination and reuse options. This study documents the effect of two hydrogen peroxide treatments on filtration efficiency and fit tests as well as the side effects for volunteers after the decontamination of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). We also propose an efficient and large-scale treatment protocol that allows for the traceability of this protective equipment in hospitals during PPE shortages.
Methods
The effects of low-temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilization and hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) on two FFR models (filtration, decontamination level, residual emanation) were …
Mechanical Design Of A Microwave Imaging Device For Breast Cancer Detection In Mri Scanners, Grace M. Player
Mechanical Design Of A Microwave Imaging Device For Breast Cancer Detection In Mri Scanners, Grace M. Player
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This project seeks to develop an updated version of a microwave imaging device for use in conjunction with breast MRI, improving upon existing technology and developing novel concepts for the device. It posits three primary redesign targets for updating the previous system: resizing the system height, making the device more iteration- friendly, and improving the overall manufacturability of the device by replacing custom components with commercially available alternatives. All three of these redesign targets are met in the new design, V2.0. The height is reduced by reducing antenna travel and height, embedding some components, and shortening the tank wall, resulting …
Development Of Polymeric Sorbents As Reusable Filtration Systems For Remediation Of Pfas Contaminated Water, E. Molly Frazar
Development Of Polymeric Sorbents As Reusable Filtration Systems For Remediation Of Pfas Contaminated Water, E. Molly Frazar
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Decades of use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a multitude of consumer and industry-based products have led to a devastating amount of soil and water contamination. Although these chemicals and compounds possess advantageous qualities – such as that of PFAS in the role of fire-fighting foams that have no doubt saved countless lives and homes, we must take responsibility for the anthropogenic hazards that threaten our global health. This entails being able to cost-effectively remediate problems created in the past from overuse of toxic substances that could negatively impact our future, and in this case, the future of …
Application Of Multi-Scale Computational Techniques To Complex Materials Systems, Mujan N. Seif
Application Of Multi-Scale Computational Techniques To Complex Materials Systems, Mujan N. Seif
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
The applications of computational materials science are ever-increasing, connecting fields far beyond traditional subfields in materials science. This dissertation demonstrates the broad scope of multi-scale computational techniques by investigating multiple unrelated complex material systems, namely scandate thermionic cathodes and the metallic foam component of micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shielding. Sc-containing "scandate" cathodes have been widely reported to exhibit superior properties compared to previous thermionic cathodes; however, knowledge of their precise operating mechanism remains elusive. Here, quantum mechanical calculations were utilized to map the phase space of stable, highly-faceted and chemically-complex W nanoparticles, accounting for both finite temperature and chemical …
Surface Properties, Work Function, And Thermionic Electron Emission Characterization Of Materials For Next-Generation Dispenser Cathodes, Antonio Mantica
Surface Properties, Work Function, And Thermionic Electron Emission Characterization Of Materials For Next-Generation Dispenser Cathodes, Antonio Mantica
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
A dispenser cathode’s ability to thermionically emit electrons is highly dependent on its material properties, especially those of the surface. Understanding the relationship between surface properties and electron emission, therefore, is vital to reach the next generation of the many vacuum electron devices (VEDs) that rely on the physics of electron emission. In the past century, many techniques have been developed to characterize material surfaces and quantify thermionic emission. These techniques are based on a wide range of different physical phenomena, including measuring photoemission via the photoelectric effect, measuring the electrostatic potential between metals in electrical contact, and current collection …
Solid-State Electrolytes For Long Duration Molten Sodium Batteries, Ryan C. Hill
Solid-State Electrolytes For Long Duration Molten Sodium Batteries, Ryan C. Hill
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Rechargeable batteries have become a staple of modern society, driving the development and expansion of portable electronics and electric vehicles. The long lifetime and high energy density provided by batteries have made them excellent candidates for use in the emerging field of long duration, grid-scale energy storage. However, traditional battery chemistries, such as Li-ion, are not an ideal solution for grid-scale storage, due to high-cost raw materials that are often sourced from volatile markets. Sodium-based batteries are a promising alternative for long duration storage, owing to the domestic abundance of raw materials and energy densities that nearly rival that of …

Diffuse Scattering And 3d-∆Pdf Analyses: Order-Disorder Phase Transitions In (Sr1−Xcax)3rh4sn13 And Nano2, Puspa Upreti
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Classification of structural phase transitions as being of the displacive or order-disorder types is usually done based on spectroscopic measurements performed above the transition. Transitions of the displacive type typically occur when soft phonon modes condense upon approaching the phase transition, whereas those of the order-disorder type are characterized by structures in which the atoms are located randomly above the phase transition at T* at the minima of a multiwell potential. In the ordered state, i.e., when T

Mechanical Behavior Of Metallic Core-Shell Nanoparticles Under Compressive Loading, Phillip Tomich
Mechanical Behavior Of Metallic Core-Shell Nanoparticles Under Compressive Loading, Phillip Tomich
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Core/shell metallic nanoparticles have been shown to be a promising material type for additive manufacturing in the aerospace and automotive fields. Within additive manufacturing they will be used to accurately make an array of nanoparticles within the grains of metal matrix composites. This in turn will help to strengthen the material while remaining ductility and light weight. In this study, copper/aluminum core/shell nanoparticles are compressed under [100], [110], [111], and [112] directions to showcase their anisotropic material properties. Models of their individual counterparts were also investigated. There are no previous works showing the deformation mechanisms of copper/aluminum core/shell nanoparticles. Molecular …
Assessing A Byproduct Of The Cbd Ethanol Extraction Process For Potential As A Wood Finishing Product, Avani M. Flanagan
Assessing A Byproduct Of The Cbd Ethanol Extraction Process For Potential As A Wood Finishing Product, Avani M. Flanagan
Masters Theses
Developments in regulations concerning the use of CBD products as therapeutic remedies have allowed the global cannabidiol (CBD) market to take off within the past five years. Despite producers of CBD oil wanting to optimize their methods and increase product yields, several waste streams still exist. During the winterization phase of the ethanol extraction process, CBD oil is cooled and filtered so the fats, waxes, and lipids from the Cannabis sativa plant can coagulate and be removed, creating a purer oil with higher potency but contributing to the 58% (crude weight) total loss that occurs throughout the process. The removed …

The Application Of Photoelectron Spectroscopies In Analyzing The Impact Of Interfacial Energetics On Perovskite Solar Cells, Tuo Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
In recent years, organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HP) have garnered tremendous attention in photovoltaic research. This attention is attributed to their low cost and excellent optoelectronic properties, including large absorption coefficients, tunable bandgaps, long charge-carrier diffusion lengths, and low densities of deep trap states. Inverted p-i-n architecture perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are of intense interest and are generally regarded as more amenable to low-temperature solution processing. Nevertheless, the development of inverted PSCs is lagging the conventional architecture devices. Imperfect energy level alignments and charge carrier recombination, especially at the interface between perovskite and electron transport layers (ETLs), are two main …

Development Of High Kinetic Inductance Superconducting Nanowire Devices On High Permittivity Strontium Titanate Substrates, Jamie Timmons
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis involves the fabrication and characterization of devices made from two different superconducting materials: yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), a high-TC complex oxide, and niobium nitride (NbN), a low-TC transition metal nitride. Both types of devices are fabricated on strontium titanate substrates, which provides a good lattice match to YBCO and also an extremely large permittivity at low temperature. We demonstrate that wet etching of YBCO thin films via bromine can be a viable microfrabriation technique for the material. Using approximately 35 nm thick epitaxially grown YBCO on an STO substrate, we were able to fabricate YBCO “microwires” with …

Effect Of Retarders On Geopolymerization Process Of Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer, Naritsara Toobpeng
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study aims to investigate the effect of additives on the geopolymerization of the fly ash-based geopolymer. The ratios of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide (S/NX and solid FA to activator (F/L) were observed by varying the S/N at 1.0-2.5 wt.% and the F/L at 0.5-3.3 wt%. Results demonstrated that the highest strength was given by the S/N and F/L at 1.0 and 2.0, respectively. These ratios were used to study the effect of fourteen additives of the setting times of geopolymer pastes. Each additive was incorporated into the pastes by two mixing methods including wet and dry-mixing. The pastes …

3d Printing Of Hydroxyapatite/Polyhydroxyalkanoate-Based Composites, Warrayut Kanabenja
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis focuses on developing bio-based 3D printing feedstocks for biomedical applications, such as bone scaffolds and soft tissue. However, their utility is limited by a narrow processing window which challenges manipulating filament size. These issues result in discontinuous flow and incomplete deposition of melted PHB. In part one, PHB and PHBV were blended with PLA and PBAT to enhance their processability and printability. The polymer blends exhibited lower crystallization temperature and degree of crystallinity. Assessing their 3D printability, neat PHB and PHBV filaments experienced, poor flow during extrudate deposition, and significant warping, leading to 3D printing failures. The blends …

Stainless steel is widely used for many components and parts in coal-fired thermal power plants. AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) is one common grade to combat the degradation at high temperatures in coal combustion atmospheres containing flue gas, coal ash, and soot (impure solid carbon particles). However, the effect of the solid carbon particles on the degradation of FSS needs to be clarified. Graphite powder was used to simulate solid carbon atmospheres for investigating the degradation of AISI 430 at high temperatures of 1150℃ to 1350℃ in coal-fired boilers. After the carbothermic reduction, the mass gain of a pre-oxidized …

Recycling of spent silver electroplating solutions has been investigated via electrowinning and electrorefining in comparison to zinc cementation technique in this research. Two different compositions of transparent and dark waste solutions were used having the remaining silver contents of 17.71 g⸳L-1 and 33.36 g⸳L-1 respectively. The waste solutions were used as an electrolyte in the first step of electrowinning at low current density of 0.015 A⸳cm-2. It was found that increasing electrowinning time from 4 h to 24 h increased the recovery of silver cathode for both types of waste solutions. The optimum electrowinning time was higher than 8 h, …

The effects of Indium (In) and Gallium (Ga) ratio on tarnish resistance, corrosion and mechanical properties of 950 silver alloy were studied. 950 Silver alloy with aluminium (Al), silica (Si) and germanium (Ge) were added with In and Ga at the range of 0.44 to 1.90 weight percent. The increment of secondary structure with Ge-Si rich phase in Ag-Al alloy increases hardness, but reduces ultimate tensile strength. The addition of In and Ga improves tarnish and corrosion resistance. The color differences as indicated by Delta E tolerances (DE*) of Ag-Al alloys are in the range of 8.64 to 11.40 while …

In the present work, commercial tin-plate used as storage cans for three different products (salmon fish, green peas, and corn) are used to investigate the corrosion to storage temperature and salt concentration. The corrosion process was electrochemically monitored using the potentiodynamic polarization method and the structure and concentrations of the corrosion products were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). To characterize the resulting sample morphology, emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the tin-coating, was important constant and by changing the NaCl concentration and operation temperature, the corrosion resistance was lower. It is …
