An Optically Controlled Closing And Opening Semiconductor Switch, K. H. Schoenbach, V. K. Lakdawala, R. Germer, S. T. Ko

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A concept for a bulk semiconductor switch is presented, where the conductivity is increased and reduced, respectively, through illumination with light of different wavelengths. The increase in conductivity is accomplished by electron ionization from deep centers and generation of bound holes. The reduction of conductivity is obtained by hole ionization from the excited centers and subsequent recombination of free electrons and holes. The transient behavior of electron and hole density in a high power semiconductor (GaAs:Cu) switch is computed by means of a rate equation model. Changes in conductivity by five orders of magnitude can be obtained.

Strains In Si-Onsio2 Structures Formed By Oxygen Implantation: Raman Scattering Characterization, D.J. Olego, H. Baumgart, G.K. Celler

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Low-temperature Raman scattering measurements were carried out to characterize Si-on-SiO2 structures formed by oxygen implantation and subsequent furnace or lamp annealing. The experiments were conducted with 413.1 nm laser light to probe only the thin Si layers at the top of the structures. The Raman spectra of the furnace-annealed samples are red shifted and broadened when compared with a virgin Si surface. The shifts and broadenings decrease with increasing annealing temperatures but they are still present in samples annealed above 1250°C for 3 h. No shifts or broadenings affect the Raman peaks of the layers, which were lamp annealed …

Surface And Thin Film Analysis Of Microelectronics Materials, Harland G. Tompkins Oct 1987

Surface And Thin Film Analysis Of Microelectronics Materials, Harland G. Tompkins

Scanning Microscopy

The use of probing techniques in the analysis of microelectronics materials is discussed in general and several examples are presented to illustrate the use of these techniques. The emphasis of this paper is for using electrons as the probing particles and both electrons and x-rays as the analyzed particles to deal with analysis of microelectronics materials. The first example involves the interaction of titanium and silicon dioxide. It is shown that when titanium is sputter deposited onto silicon dioxide, the titanium reduces a small amount of the oxide to elemental silicon at the interface. The second example shows how a …

Precipitation Of Scale-Forming Materials From Solution, William A. Hockings, Duane M. Thayer

Michigan Tech Patents

Scale-forming metal oxides and carbonates, such as cupric oxide, can be precipitated from an ammoniacal leaching solution with minimum scale buildup by distilling the solution in an externally heated distillation chamber mounted for rotation about a generally horizontal axis. The distillation chamber includes a plurality of axially spaced annular baffles defining a plurality of compartments containing a tumbling medium, such as spherical balls. The solution is continuously introduced into the inlet end of the chamber and heated under pressure to a temperature above its boiling point as it flows over the baffles toward the outlet end of the chamber. A …

Nucleation And Growth Of Zinc Electrodeposited From Acidic Zinc Solutions, A. C. Beshore, B. J. Flori, G. Schade, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nucleation and initial crystal growth kinetics by electrodeposition from acidic zinc solutions was studied in the absence and presence of antimony and glue on a glassy carbon electrode. Zinc exhibits instantaneous nucleation under the experimental conditions employed in the potential region from -1600 to -2000 mV (mercurous sulphate reference). At low overpotentials antimony and glue increase the number of nuclei. © 1987 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Electrochemical Technique For Corrosion Monitoring, Nadia Mohamed Khattab Jan 1987

Electrochemical Technique For Corrosion Monitoring, Nadia Mohamed Khattab

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The present work is a study of the applicability of linear polarisation resistance technique as a means for corrosion monitoring. Parameters tested were alloy composition, surface finish of specimens before exposure, concentration of aqueous environment and the additional effect of soil to the aqueou􀀂 medium. A simple galvanostatic polarisation circuit was utilized. A polarisation resistance curve was then plotted from which the corrosion current densities and corrosion rates were calculated. The results of this work show that Corrosion reactions depend on both thermodynamic and kinetic parameters, also these reactions are under mixed control and the potential actually measured at the …

Bubble Formation, Movement And Distortion In Viscous Glass, Simon Cheng-Ping Wang Jan 1987

Bubble Formation, Movement And Distortion In Viscous Glass, Simon Cheng-Ping Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study of bubble formation, movement and distortion in viscous glass is described. A glass rod containing an irregularly shaped hole is heated to a temperature at where the glass viscosity is low enough to let the hole form a spherical bubble. Spheration occurs as the bubble moves upward in the glass rod. At the proper time, the rising bubble is decelerated and brought to a stop by increasing the glass viscosity by slowly reducing the temperature. The entrapped bubble is then cut from the glass rod and heated again, if necessary, to a lower temperature, to reduce distortion of …

Calculation Of Mass Transfer Coefficients In Metal Deposition Using Electrochemical Tracer Techniques, Thomas J. O'Keefe, J. S. Cuzmar, S. F. Chen Jan 1987

Calculation Of Mass Transfer Coefficients In Metal Deposition Using Electrochemical Tracer Techniques, Thomas J. O'Keefe, J. S. Cuzmar, S. F. Chen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A modification of the tracer technique of Ettel has been developed for determining mass-transfer coefficients in electrolytes for both electrowinning and electrorefining systems. The method involves the direct measurement of the limiting current density of a more noble tracer ion at low concentration by cyclic voltammetry techniques in an electrolyte of choice. A Ag+tracer in acid copper sulfate is used as the example. Additional tests were made by code positing the tracer with copper to compare the results of the two methods. The effect of copper ion concentration and temperature on the electrochemical and transport properties of the solution were …

Microstructural Inhomogeneity In Sintered Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3‐Pbtio3 Based Dielectrics, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1987

Microstructural Inhomogeneity In Sintered Pb(Mg1/3nb2/3)O3‐Pbtio3 Based Dielectrics, Jyoti P. Guha, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The sintering behavior and microstructural development of dielectric ceramics based on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3‐PbTiO3 solid solutions are greatly affected by the formation of a liquid phase at ∼ 1290°C. Prolonged sintering at and above this temperature gives rise to an excessive PbO loss and the resultant variation in composition leads to an inhomogeneous microstructure. The inhomogeneity is characterized by the formation of a dense, localized region containing a PbO‐rich liquid near the surface with a porous interior region in the bulk of the sample. An Apparatus For The Measurement Of Dc Electrical Conductivity And Seebeck Coefficient Of Semiconductors As A Function Of High Temperature And Oxygen Partial Pressure, George Francis Carini Ii

Masters Theses

"A computer controlled apparatus for the measurement of dc electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure has been developed. Thermocouples are in electrical and thermal contact with the ends of the specimen bar. This allows both Seebeck and four-wire electrical conductivity measurements to be made in situ. Environmental enclosure of the specimen allows measurements over a range of oxygen activities from 1 to 10-18 atm. A discussion of the measuring technique with schematics of the apparatus and data retrieval system is made. Results for measurements in selected oxide ceramics are compared to …

The Development Of Glass-Ceramic Matrix Composites And The Crystallization Of Two Glass-Ceramic Matrices, William M. Carty

Masters Theses

"In order to develop ceramic matrix composites for high temperature applications, two glass-ceramic matrices, one an yttrium aluminosilicate (YAS), the other a magnesium aluminosilicate (cordierite), were chosen as possible matrix compositions. Two separate sets of experiments were performed. Specimens were hot pressed and heat treated then analyzed for the crystallization products and C.T.E. Specimens were also prepared containing commercially available ceramic fibers and coated ceramic fibers to investigate fiber/matrix interactions and the effect of fiber additions on the crystallization of the glass matrices. DTA was employed to approximate the crystallization temperature of the glasses and to determine the effect of …

Glass Fiber Reinforced Polycarbonate Composites, Wen Ching Hu Jan 1987

Glass Fiber Reinforced Polycarbonate Composites, Wen Ching Hu

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this work was to develop a transparent glass fiber reinforced polymer composite material which is superior to the transparent unreinforced thermoplastic in mechanical properties but similar in optical clarity. Polycarbonate matrix composite specimens containing 0 to 40 wt% SK-12 glass fiber were studied, with mechanical and optical properties determined as a function of glass fiber content. The mechanical properties -- flexural strength and elastic modulus increased with increasing glass fiber content. The optical properties -- transmission and transparency decreased with increasing glass fiber content. The factors which influence the mechanical and optical properties were investigated"--Abstract, page ii.

Characterization Of The Fluid-Dynamic Mixing Of A Bottom Gas-Injected Channel Reactor Using Low-Temperature Modelling, Jay Bernett Gassel Jan 1987

Characterization Of The Fluid-Dynamic Mixing Of A Bottom Gas-Injected Channel Reactor Using Low-Temperature Modelling, Jay Bernett Gassel

Masters Theses

"Variables influencing the mixing in a single-phase (30.5 x 60 x 606 cm) and a two-phase (20 x 40 x 200 cm) channel reactor model were studied. Tracer and/or neutral density particle techniques were used to determine an eddy diffusivity, De, for the system(s). Three bubbler arrangements were investigated in the one-phase work. A separate apparatus was developed to withstand the corrosiveness of the tetrachloroethylene used in the two-phase work.

Both the electrical conductivity tracer technique and the neutral density particle technique were shown to be feasible experimental techniques for determining an eddy diffusivity in the systems studied. Decreasing liquid …

Causal Factors In The Hydration Susceptibility Of Periclase Aggregates, Chao-Min Cheng Jan 1987

Causal Factors In The Hydration Susceptibility Of Periclase Aggregates, Chao-Min Cheng

Masters Theses

"The findings presented in this thesis are the result of a study of the hydration mechanism of pre-calcined periclase aggregates. It is hoped that these findings will provide the means to develop an economical, stable and hydration resistant layer on the surface of periclase aggregates by coating with appropriate chemical systems.

In the conduct of this study two sources of commercially obtained materials, Steetley 323, and China metal 90-10, supplied by the Quigley company, were characterized and treated with different concentrations of boron-containing water suspensions in order to impose an altered layer which would resist hydration.

Variables affecting hydration investigated …

Formability Of 356 Aluminum, Karol Krumrey Schrems Jan 1987

Formability Of 356 Aluminum, Karol Krumrey Schrems

Masters Theses

"Although aluminum casting alloys are not often thought of as being formable, this thesis examines this possibility. Aluminum alloy 356 was cast in permanent molds and subsequently deformed by rolling (providing compressive loading) and bending (providing tensile loading). Cold forming was found to be very limited, while forming at elevated temperatures was comparatively easy and permitted reductions of up to 90%. Tensile properties and microstructures were examined in detail. Forming breaks up the eutectic silicon and intermetallic compounds. The yield strength and tensile strength increased almost linearly with increasing total percent reduction. The elongation at first increases with total percent …

Property Survey Of Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-Sio₂-MₓoY Glasses, Amy Lee Applewhite Jan 1987

Property Survey Of Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-Sio₂-MₓoY Glasses, Amy Lee Applewhite

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this work was to investigate the properties of Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-SiO₂-MxOy glasses. Many MxOy components were tested, but TiO₂ and B₂O₃ proved the most interesting. Glasses containing 5 to 25 wt % TiO₂ were melted and found to have improved chemical durability and a higher refractive index and density than the eutectic Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ starting glass. These glasses could be crystallized to form an opaque glass ceramic. Glasses containing B₂O₃ were formed by exchanging SiO₂ with B₂O₃ while holding the Y₂O₃ and Al₂O₃ content constant. The density, hardness, refractive index, transformation temperature, softening temperature …

The Use Of Computerized Data Acquisition Techniques To Measure The Kinetics Of A Batch Flotation Process, Jose Antonio Barrera-Godinez Jan 1987

The Use Of Computerized Data Acquisition Techniques To Measure The Kinetics Of A Batch Flotation Process, Jose Antonio Barrera-Godinez

Masters Theses

"The flotation response of a lead ore was measured by utilization of a computer driven data acquisition system. A symmetric, fast and automatic froth removal and weighing system was attached to a conventional laboratory flotation cell. The rate controlling mechanisms were identified by manipulation of the froth removal rate, (FRR), froth layer thickness, (FT), and air flow rate, (AFR). The production of froth, water, solids and value in addition to value recovery and concentrate grade were determined as a function of time of flotation.

The flotation response was controlled by events dependent of AFR when using shallow froths of less …

The Interfacial Phenomena Of Liquid Copper Of Sapphire Substrates, Jenq Liu Jan 1987

The Interfacial Phenomena Of Liquid Copper Of Sapphire Substrates, Jenq Liu

Masters Theses

"The wetting behavior of liquid copper on the sapphire is effected by the crystallographic orientation of the solid surface, the oxygen partial pressure, and the temperature. Each of these influences has been studied by the sessile drop technique, over the oxygen partial pressure range from 10-2 to 10-20 atm at temperatures of 1373°K, and 1523°K. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the liquid copper surface energy follows the Gibbs Langmuir Law.

The crystallographic orientation of the sapphire surface causes variations in the contact angle. This is more significant for higher oxygen partial pressure, but is eliminated at …

Studies Of Defect Structure And Oxidation-Reduction Behavior Of Undoped Lamno₃, Sr-Doped Lamno₃ And Mg-Doped Lamno₃, Jen-Ho Kuo Jan 1987

Studies Of Defect Structure And Oxidation-Reduction Behavior Of Undoped Lamno₃, Sr-Doped Lamno₃ And Mg-Doped Lamno₃, Jen-Ho Kuo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Undoped LaMnO₃, Sr-doped LaMnO₃ and Mg-doped LaMnO₃ showed reversible oxidation-reduction behavior. These perovskites can be excess, stoichiometric or deficient in oxygen content depending on the specific conditions. Under very reducing conditions these oxides will decompose into new phases. Phase stabilities for these oxides were determined. The results showed that both Sr and Mg doping caused the LaMnO₃ to dissociate at higher oxygen activities than for undoped LaMnO₃.

Defect models were proposed to interpret the TG results, in which metal vacancies are assumed for the oxygen excess condition and oxygen vacancies are assumed for the oxygen deficient condition. Thermodynamic properties were …

Fundamental Study Of The Role Of Cathode Structure On Zinc Electrowinning, Horacio M. Aros Jan 1987

Fundamental Study Of The Role Of Cathode Structure On Zinc Electrowinning, Horacio M. Aros

Doctoral Dissertations

"The influence of cathode macromorphology on the current efficiency of zinc electrowinning was determined.

The studies have shown that surface roughness affects current efficiency during zinc electrowinning, particularly when the electrolyte contains impurities such as nickel and antimony. Current efficiency does not change with surface roughness as long as the electrolyte is sufficiently pure.

Zinc deposited on smooth zinc cathodes tends to retain a more favorable structure and macromorphology, which is less sensitive to the effects caused by antimony and nickel. Glue helps to counteract the effect of the impurities; however, its presence in the electrolyte at certain combinations with …
