A Case Study On The Use Of Flexible Earth Retaining Structure In Instable Slopes, H. Turan Durgunoglu, Ahmet Sahin, Onder Akcakal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Recently new highway, motorway and railway projects take place in many developing countries within the aggressive infrastructure investment programme of governments. In rugged topography, engineers face the challenging problems of designing safe and cost effective cuts and fills for these projects especially under seismic loading and marginal stability conditions. Overall stability mechanism and safety of the cut generally controls the design decisions for the relevant section. In addition, because of the construction width limitations, in some mechanically stabilized earth wall projects sufficient width to accommodate the strip lengths of the retaining system cannot be provided. To eliminate all these problems, …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper presents a slope stability analysis of a proposed embankment contained within an abandoned coal mine reclamation project near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. The project involved the use of computer modeling to analyze the slope stability of the earth-filled embankment. The project plans call for mine spoils and silty-clay borrow materials is used to construct a 74,000 cubic yard embankment, which will be used as a water impoundment for a small lake. The embankment, as designed, consists of a central clay core, mine spoils and a silty-clay material cap. The software program Galena was used as a modeling tool for the …
Mississippi River Road Gabion Wall/Slope Stabilization, W. Ken Beck, Lok M. Sharma
Mississippi River Road Gabion Wall/Slope Stabilization, W. Ken Beck, Lok M. Sharma
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Lee County widened Mississippi River Road north of the Keokuk, Iowa in the early 1990s, removing material from the toe of slopes along the alignment. Gabion walls were constructed to provide grade separation. Significant precipitation occurred in the spring of 2010, and two (2) wall sections (about 100 feet each in length) failed. Based on our site exploration and instrumentation monitoring data, the gabion wall sections appeared to fail due to additional lateral load from a soil mass sliding on top of the shale bedrock and a buildup of high ground water levels. To support the additional load of the …

A case history of repair works of road embankment failure at KM39, Route 68, Kuala Lumpur – Bentong Road in the state of Selangor, Malaysia and an observation on the condition of the site after 15 years and some tensile strength testing carried out on buried and exposed geogrid was presented in this paper. Due to heavy rainfall in 1995, about half of the road embankment which was located at the alluvial fan of an upslope stream valley was washout. For the reconstruction of the alignment, the existing half of the alignment was converted into a buffer zone with a …
Remediation Of A Slope Failure Above Retaining Wall Under Construction, Miroslav Cerny, Lubos Hrustinec
Remediation Of A Slope Failure Above Retaining Wall Under Construction, Miroslav Cerny, Lubos Hrustinec
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In practice is for various reasons very difficult to assume a real sliding failure on the slip surface, which can be created from more parts (straight and curved) with different local soil characteristics. Therefore is usually at classical methods of slope stability shear surface replaced, for example by a cylindrical surface for cohesive soils. An important factor affecting stability is also the effect of groundwater. In practice is just the influence of groundwater very often reason of landslides on natural slopes and cut slopes. Such landslide has happened in the case of construction the retaining wall on the highway D1 …

Neither this presentation nor the engineering analyses aimed at the search for scapegoats behind the failures.
Case Study Of Landslides In Kabylia Region, Algeria, Sadaoui Omar, Sadaoui Samir, Bahar Ramdane
Case Study Of Landslides In Kabylia Region, Algeria, Sadaoui Omar, Sadaoui Samir, Bahar Ramdane
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Kabylia is mountainous and coastline region of Algeria. Every year, particularly in the winter, it is affected by landslides displacing an important volume of detritic materials, and causing damages to infrastructures, housing and public facilities. It takes place in geological formations that are particularly favourable to this type of movement, because of the heterogeneity of their facies and the impermeability of some layers. Experience shows that the main cause of the landslides in this region is the combination of several passive and active factors, as geology, morphology, hydrology, climate and anthropic activities. The exceptional rains of winter 2012 triggered a …

Effect Of The Soil Spatial Variability On The Static And Dynamic Stability Analysis Of A Lebanese Slope, Mansour Neaimeh, Rony Azar, Roni Hmaymes, Georges Nasr, Dalia Youssef Abdel Massih, Jacques Harb, Nancy Salloum, Cécile Cornou, Denis Jongmans
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The accidental topography and heterogeneous Lebanese geology in addition to the active seismicity have initiated the static and dynamic stability analysis of Lebanese slopes. In this paper, the stability of a sandy Lebanese slope situated at Mansourieh near Beirut is investigated using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. The characterization of the variability of the slope soil properties is done based on geological investigation, as well as geophysical (Resistivity and Ambient noise) and geotechnical tests performed on this slope. Three dimensional 3D static deterministic analyses is performed to determine the overall safety factor of the slope and to find the location of …

Highway Section Affected By Two Neighboring Landslides – Performance, Monitoring And Design Of Stabilization Measures, Vassilis Houssiadas, Eleni Sakoumpenta, Manolis Haralambakis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Two separate deep-seated, creeping landslides exist in close proximity in a mountainous area with highly heterogeneous geological and geotechnical conditions. The ground movements are measured at a depth greater than 50m and affect 65m-high G4 embankment and 240m-long S3 tunnel that are under traffic since 2004. The first landslide affecting the embankment initiated shortly after completion of construction in an area where the highway was realigned after an old, pre-existing unstable area was identified during the design. Tunnel S3, about 300m to the east of embankment G4, suffered from slope instability during construction. This was successfully dealt with and the …

Stabilisation Of Deep Soil Cut Using Micropiles And Soil Nailing, V. V. Vaishampayan, S. P. Bhosle
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Railway route through south-west part of India (Konkan Railway) is passing through a hilly terrain. The route is developed by cutting the mountains in slopes and construction of tunnels. Many slopes along this route are very deep and steep. The region is characterized by lateritic soil. A heavy monsoon initiates some of the deep slope failures resulting in large magnitude of loss – both in money and life. The initial failure of one of the slope at Chainage 344/900 Km was stabilized by Gabion walls. West side of the Soil cutting was about 100 m long and a lateritic …

Stabilizing A Landslide On A Highway Under Traffic: A Case History On Egnatia Motorway In Greece, Eleni Sakoumpenta, Vassilis Houssiadas, Manolis Haralambakis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the winter of 2010, a landslide occurred on Egnatia motorway affecting an embankment approximately 300m long and 8–20 m high. The crest of the slide was at a distance of 60m uphill from the highway and the maximum depth of movement was 28 m. The bedrock in the area consists of alternating layers of siltstone and sandstone with local conglomerate intercalations covered by a soil layer of variable thickness (up to 30m) and consistency. The sliding occurred within a zone of plastic red clay just above bedrock exhibiting strength parameters between peak and residual values. A horizontal movement of …

Seismic Retrofit Of Crane Valley Dam, David Ritzman, Faiz Makdisi, Joseph De Larios, Joseph Sun, Charles Ahlgren
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Crane Valley Dam is located on the North Fork of Willow Creek in Madera County, California, and is owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). The results of seismic stability analyses performed in 2005 and 2006 showed that the dam’s hydraulic fill embankments would experience large deformations during and after the earthquake shaking postulated for the site. To improve the seismic stability and performance of the dam, PG&E initiated the Crane Valley Dam Seismic Retrofit Project (Project), which includes placing new rockfill buttresses on the upstream and downstream slopes of the dam, constructing internal drainage improvements, reinforcing portions of …
Selection Of Most Appropriate Procedures For Seismic Evaluation Of Levees Based On Case Histories, Vlad Perlea, Khaled Chowdhury, Mary Perlea, George Hu
Selection Of Most Appropriate Procedures For Seismic Evaluation Of Levees Based On Case Histories, Vlad Perlea, Khaled Chowdhury, Mary Perlea, George Hu
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The current methodology for embankment dams evaluation is not appropriate for levees of low heights, which have little effect on the stress state of the foundation soil and, therefore, on its response to the seismic action. In many cases the liquefaction potential of the alluvial deposits is not affected by the levee presence, although is the main factor in levee degradation. Lateral spreading of liquefiable foundation is the main cause of small levee cracking and settlement induced by earthquakes. On the other part, the procedures recommended for evaluation of lateral spreading are not directly applicable to the analysis of levees. …

Study Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Anisotropic Magnetoelastic Structure With A Point Source, Amares Chattopadhyay, Sanjeev A. Sahu
Study Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Anisotropic Magnetoelastic Structure With A Point Source, Amares Chattopadhyay, Sanjeev A. Sahu
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
We aim to study the effect of point source on the propagation of horizontally polarised shear wave in a magnetoelastic self-reinforced layer lying over a heterogeneous self-reinforced half-space. The heterogeneity in the half-space has been considered due to quadratic variation in rigidity. Using the Green’s function method based on algebraic transformations, we have obtained the relation showing the dependence of phase velocity of the shear wave. The solution part of the problem involves the perturbation approach. The dispersion curves have been obtained for different values of magnetoelastic and inhomogeneity parameters. It is observed that the dispersion equation is in assertion …

L'Aquila Seismic Event On 6th April 2009: Site Effects And Critical Points In Microzonation Activity Within The Aterno Valley Municipalities, Mario Luigi Rainone, Patrizio Signanini, Giovanna Vessia, Pasquale Greco, Sara Di Benedetto
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
L’Aquila earthquake was a complex seismic event characterized by its main shock on 6th April 2009 with magnitude Mw=6.3 and many foreshocks and aftershocks that stroke the whole Aterno River Valley from November 2008 up to September 2009. The huge amount of strong-motion records collected by permanent and temporary stations placed in the valley show a heterogeneous seismic hazard scenario related to different damage levels. With respect to the seismological features of the records within the “crater” (that is the portion of the Aterno Valley which suffered the strongest struck), they show “near field” and “near source” characters although the …

Banda Aceh-Indonesia Ground Response Analysis During The 2004 Indian Ocean Mega Earthquake, Bambang Setiawan, Wahyu Budi Kusuma
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The site response effect i.e. soil amplification has caused major structure damages founded on thick soft soils. Banda Aceh, Indonesia is underlain by approximately 70m to 206m thick alluvium. Thus, site-specific ground response analysis of Banda Aceh is necessary to be warranted. Due to the absence of strong motion records during the 2004 Indian Ocean mega earthquake duplication of synthetic strong motions are used in this study. Subsequently, ground response analysis was carried out by using computer programs of NERA. The results of the site-specific ground response studies expose the real Banda Aceh’s soil response during the 2004 Sumatran mega …

Determination Of Mse Wall Pseudo Static Coefficient Based On Seismic Performance, Ali Komak Panah, Majid Yazdandoust, Reza Sadeghzadegan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This study, tries to suggest a design method based on displacement using finite difference numerical modeling in reinforcing soil retaining wall. In this case, loading characteristics, such as magnitude, frequency, peak ground acceleration and geometrical characteristics of reinforced soil structure are considered to correct the pseudo static method and finally introduce the pseudo static coefficient as a function of seismic performance level and peak ground acceleration. In addition, the authors has tried to simply suggest the equivalent harmonic loading of selected acceleration records. Considering the loading parameters, mechanically stabilized earth wall parameters and type of the site showed that the …

Geotechnical Problems In The 2011 Tohoku Pacific Earthquakes, Kohji Tokimatsu, Hiroko Suzuki, Kota Katsumata, Shuji Tamura
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An overview of the geotechnical aspects of the building damage in the 2011 Tohoku Pacific earthquake is presented, based on field reconnaissance made after the quake. It is shown that: (1) Extensive soil liquefaction occurred along the coast of Tokyo Bay and around the Tonegawa River floodplain. Liquefaction primarily occurred within relatively new reclaimed area, with large ground settlement up to 60 cm, accompanied by settlement/tilting of wooden and reinforced concrete buildings supported on spread foundations; (2) Numerous houses in Sendai’s hilly residential areas constructed with cut-and-fill methods were badly damaged not only by simple collapse of retaining walls, but …
Design Of A-Walls For Stabilization Of Slopes And Embankments In Soft Soils, Jesús E. Gómez, Carlos Englert, Helen D. Robinson
Design Of A-Walls For Stabilization Of Slopes And Embankments In Soft Soils, Jesús E. Gómez, Carlos Englert, Helen D. Robinson
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A-Wall systems are a combination of deep foundations and, in some cases, tiebacks used to provide lateral support to an unstable ground mass. Determination of the lateral and vertical forces acting on an A-Wall system can be a complex endeavor. As the unstable soil mass tends to move past and through the A-Wall system, forces are generated between the A-Wall elements and the soil. These forces provide support to the ground mass. If the A-Wall is correctly designed, the forces will increase as the soil moves until a maximum is attained at which ground movement ceases and the system reaches …
Performance Appraisal Of Ballasted Rail Track Stabilised By Geosynthetic Reinforcement And Shock Mats, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn
Performance Appraisal Of Ballasted Rail Track Stabilised By Geosynthetic Reinforcement And Shock Mats, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Rail tracks serve the principal mode of transportation for bulk freight and passengers in Australia. Ballast is an essential constituent governing the overall stability and performance of rail tracks. However, large repetitive loads from heavy haul and passenger trains often lead to excessive deformation and degradation of the ballast layer, which necessitate frequent and expensive track maintenance works. In Australia, the high cost of track maintenance is often associated with ballast degradation, fouling (e.g. coal and subgrade soil) and associated poor drainage, differential settlement of track, pumping of subgrade soils, and track misalignment due to excessive lateral movements. With increased …
Long-Term Effects Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Failures, Ikuo Towhata
Long-Term Effects Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Failures, Ikuo Towhata
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The earthquake-induced slope failures are now attracting significant concerns among experts of landslides. The reason for this is the complicated causative mechanisms as well as its impact on communities. The present paper states moreover that the onset of seismic slope failure is not only the consequence of a natural disaster but also the beginning of a long-term disaster in which the compound effects of the preceding earthquakes and the following heavy rain falls play significant roles. After addressing cases of this kind of natural disaster together with their classifications, study is made of the material properties of rocks subjected to …
A Laboratory Study Of Strong And Weak Sandstones, Arup Bandyopadhyay, Hasan Abdullah
A Laboratory Study Of Strong And Weak Sandstones, Arup Bandyopadhyay, Hasan Abdullah
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The laboratory evaluation of four sandstones from three projects, Shwezaye H.E. Project, Myanmar, Ujh H.E. Project, J&K, India (two variants) and Ken- Betwa Link Project, M.P., India, is presented here. The study leads to three broad inferences: one, there could be very large variation between two sandstones; e.g., here, sandstone from Ken-Betwa, vis-à-vis other three (comparatively poor) sandstones, is superior in all respects (except grain density). Two, the three poor sandstones differ in respect of some – not all – properties and parameters. Three, none of the three poor sandstones is better than the other two in respect of all …
Correlation Between VS And Rqd For Different Rock Types, Emre Biringen, John Davie
Correlation Between VS And Rqd For Different Rock Types, Emre Biringen, John Davie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Although there is no direct relationship between the shear wave velocity (VS) of in-situ rock and Rock Quality Designation (RQD), it is apparent that some relationship exists since both VS and RQD decrease in fractured and weathered rock. However, unweathered or unfractured soft rock will have comparatively low VS compared with unweathered or unfractured hard rock since VS is a function of rock hardness and density. Thus, any relationship between VS and RQD will be specific to a particular rock type, and, in many cases, to a particular area/region where the hardness and density …
Ground Improvement For Redevelopment Of Former Landfill, Larry P. Jedele, Brandon Buschmeier
Ground Improvement For Redevelopment Of Former Landfill, Larry P. Jedele, Brandon Buschmeier
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A former industrial landfill site was selected for the design and construction of a large industrial building. Due to the soil and groundwater conditions along with potential environmental impacts discussed in this paper, support of the building using shallow spread foundations or conventional deep foundations, such as driven or cast-in-place piles or drilled piers were not considered to be reasonable foundation support alternatives. Therefore, ground improvement was deemed the best alternative to support the building, floor slabs and machine foundations for the project, although timber piles with a structural slab were also considered. Controlled modulus columns and rammed aggregate piers …
