Underpinning Using Micropiles For Fragile Building Adjacent To Deep Excavation In Manhattan, New York, Chu Ho, Adrian Pena-Iguaran
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A deep excavation was to be carried out adjacent to a fragile building in weak ground. An underpinning scheme utilizing 250kips capacity micropiles socketed into the bedrock was designed to provide stability to the building during the excavation. In adopting the micropile system, the interior of the basement had to be retrofitted with a new reinforced concrete structural system of walls, slabs and beams to provide rigid framing for transfer of loads between the existing structural walls and the new micropiles. The micropiles were installed from inside the basement of the adjacent building under low headroom conditions. A preliminary load …

Damage On A Main Gas Pipeline Due To Landslide Of Soils Derived From Volcanic Ashes In Colombia, Gilberto Ch. Rodriguez, Julián V. Rodriguez, Natalia A. Quintero, Jorge E. Villamarín
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In December 2011 a great proportion slope failed affecting the main gas pipeline (20” diameter) that supplies Colombia’s southwest area. The landslide involved materials formed by soils derived from volcanic ashes and residual soils, typical in Colombia’s central zone, which acquired great energy flowing in an avalanche through the natural watercourse. The avalanche generated soil erosion over the torrent banks, generating the watercourse deepening and the deterioration of adjacent slopes over which the pipeline runs. There were identified as landslides triggering aspects the atypical raining period due to “La Niña” climatic phenomenon and the soils removal at the slope base …

Basic research of lateral earth pressure based on physical and numerical experiments began in 1998 at the institute of the author and it has continued to the present time. The physical research should prove the behavior of ideally non-cohesive granular mass during three basic types of structure/wall movement towards in active and passive directions. The first research period in 1998-2000 was aimed on active pressure, and in 2001-2002 on the first long-term experiment with passive pressure (E3/0.2). Then new experimental equipment was developed between 2003 and 2009 on a contemporary advanced level. The first long-term experiment with passive pressure E3/0,2 …
Earth Dam Failure By Erosion, A Case History, Scott Newhouse
Earth Dam Failure By Erosion, A Case History, Scott Newhouse
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In January 1998, the Archusa Creek Dam in southeast Mississippi failed by breaching through its emergency spillway. At the time of its failure, the dam had a concrete ogee weir for a principal spillway and a vegetated earth emergency spillway. Fortunately, the dam is a low hazard structure, as there is little development downstream, and consequences of failure were mostly limited to the loss of a state-owned, recreational water park. The dam failed as a result of a 5-year storm event, triggered by intense rainfall of nearly 4.25 in. in just a few hours. Runoff generated by the storm caused …

Evaluation Of The Failure Probability Of Slopes In Residual Soil From The Aburrá Valley, Medellín Colombia, Juan Pablo Villada Rodas, Manuel Roberto Villarraga
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In recent years the evaluation of failure probability on slope stability analyses has become important because it has been presented as a representative method helping to complement the factor of safety. As part of this paper, it is proposed the evaluation of the failure probability in cut slopes on residual soils from the Aburrá valley. Statistical analyses were performed on the most important variables, considering continuous statistical distributions. Sensitivity analyses were performed to quantify their influence in the stability. As a result, some abacuses are developed in which the height and the slope angle are related to the failure probability …

Stabilization Of Existing Sheet Pile Cell In The Ohio River, David W. Bird
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An existing 40 foot diameter sheet pile cell (cell) was used to support a dry fly ash loading platform at an electrical power generating facility on the Ohio River. The cell was designed and constructed in 1986 for support of a coal barge unloading crane but was never put into service. The cell has leaned riverward several inches in the years after construction. Stability analysis indicated a less than adequate overturning factor of safety without any additional loads. The addition of the loading platform could result in an overturning failure. A stabilizing system which provided a horizontal stabilizing force of …

Experimental Study On Mitigation Of Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Displacement Deep Soil Mixing, Rouzbeh Rasouli, Naoki Takahashi, Ali Derakhshani, Suguru Yamada, Yuji Takaoka, Ikuo Towhata
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
After 1990s' earthquakes in Japan, lateral flow of liquefiable slopes became a serious concern of engineers. Espisally Kobe earthquake (1995) in which high subsidence of river levee as a result of liquefied sand lateral flow was observed, become a turning point in geotechnical engineering approach in dealing with this phenomena. From that time many different kinds of mitigation measures for preventing or at least controlling the extent of lateral flow have been proposed. Improving soil by deep mixing columns is one of the common methods of soil improvement that can also be used for controlling the consequences of liquefied sand …

A typical top-down deep excavation project in Shanghai was carefully monitored during the construction process. This case history was back-analysed with a complex 3D FEM numerical model in ABAQUS to investigate the influence of different modelling procedures. The model considered the detailed construction procedures and structural information. The calculations included the small-strain stiffness of the soil and thermal shrinkage of the concrete beams and slabs. The small-strain stiffness is modelled with a multi-surface soil model developed at Oxford which has been implemented into ABAQUS. The diaphragm wall was modelled as an anisotropic linear elastic material to represent the effect of …

Remediation Of Distressed Frozen Earth Cofferdams, Joseph A. Sopko, Robert Chamberland
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Artificial Ground Freezing was used to provide temporary earth support and groundwater control for a complex system of three frozen earth cofferdams for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District’s Harbor Siphons Project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Site geometry and frozen earth structural design precluded construction of one large excavation, requiring the component system of the tangential cofferdams. High groundwater velocity prevented the formation of the frozen earth walls during various stages of the project. Remedial methods including external dewatering, permeation grouting, jet grouting, timber shoring and sheet piling were attempted to complete the project. Ultimately a more aggressive ground freezing program was …
