Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña
Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Pricing in the commercial catastrophe insurance market is primarily driven by computer models. For the evaluation of commercial earthquake insurance risk, the majority of insurers, reinsurers and more recently, rating agencies, rely heavily on the output models developed by a few software vendors. Insurers and reinsurers evaluate their total risk based on output from one or more of these models, and develop prices that depend on the loss estimate data from the models. In an effort to most accurately potential, soil conditions and engineering practices are recognized by the model vendors and incorporated into the loss calculation algorithms. When an insurer …
Liquefaction Resistance Of Gravelly Soils, Michael R. Lewis, Ignacio Arango, Kenneth H. Stokoe Ii
Liquefaction Resistance Of Gravelly Soils, Michael R. Lewis, Ignacio Arango, Kenneth H. Stokoe Ii
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Liquefaction assessments of gravels and soils that contain a large gravel fraction are difficult. Undisturbed (intact) sampling of these soils is problematic and laboratory testing carried out on reconstituted samples or on frozen samples obtained from the field is time consuming, expensive, and interpretation of the results requires considerable judgment. Because of these and other issues, for a remote site in British Columbia, Canada (aka “Study Site”), it was decided to carry out the liquefaction potential assessment using existing published relationships and case history data on similar soils. This case history describes the approach utilized, including material mechanical properties, measured …

Networked Geotechnical Near Real-Time Monitoring For Large Urban Excavation Using Multiple Wireless Sensors, Stephen M. Mclandrich, Youssef M. A. Hashash, Nick J. O’Riordan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A massive urban excavation is required to construct the below-grade rail platforms for the Transbay Transit Center. A performance-based approach was used to design the minimum stiffness of the shoring system to limit excavation-induced ground movements to appropriate magnitudes and minimize impact to adjacent infrastructure. During construction, a fully-automated near real-time digital geotechnical monitoring system that integrates wireless sensor data streams into an integrated database and decision support system called the Global Analyzer is used to track the performance of this excavation. Instrumentation used for monitoring includes inclinometers, deep settlement markers, extensometers, piezometers, and an automated total station network. Some …

The 45-story Great American Tower, the tallest building in Cincinnati, is not only changing the downtown skyline, but is an excellent case study of innovation in geotechnical engineering. This project is an excellent example of the use of technological advances in site characterization and soil-structure methods. When an opportunity arises to combine state-of-the-art concepts with advanced modeling tools, engineers need to combine knowledge and forward thinking to geotechnical solutions to promote the state-of-practice. The Great American Tower at Queen City Square in Cincinnati, Ohio combines a mat foundation with a limited number of auger cast-inplace (ACIP) piles, with the piles …

Digboi Refinery is the world’s oldest refinery in simple form which is producing oil since 1889 till present with its modernized setup. Its first well was dug manually during 1889 and crude oil was found at 54m depth only. This phenomenon has encouraged establishing an industry on oil producing business, and accordingly a form of first refinery was comeout in 1889. The Digboi Refinery modernization project was taken up in large scale in order to overcome the technological obsolescence of the old refinery. Subsequently a number of other major projects were undertaken by Assam Oil Division to further revamp and …
Role Of Case Histories On Geotechnical Engineering Teaching And Practice, R. Shivashankar
Role Of Case Histories On Geotechnical Engineering Teaching And Practice, R. Shivashankar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineering teaching can be made more interesting with the use of modern methods of teaching and learning aids, visits to construction projects, case studies etc. A faculty at an university/technical institute, who is actively involved in geotechnical designs and consultancy works, will have enough case studies, with the examples of which he, will be able to deliver his lectures more effectively and make a good impression upon the students. The universal mantra nowadays is ‘learning should be made more student centric’. At the author's institute, where a post-graduate and doctoral programme in geotechnical engineering are being successfully run for …

Site Effects Estimation In Tehran City By Using Empirical Methods, Reza Behrou, Mohammad Reza Ghayamghamian
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In this paper, site effects assessment in Tehran city, the capital of Iran, were estimated by using empirical methods. Both spectral ratio of the horizontal components of sedimentary site to rocky site (Hs/Hr) or site/reference, and Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) methods have been used for estimation the site effects parameters. For this purpose, the recorded motions in BHRC (Building and Housing Research Center) acceleration stations were analyzed. These motions were recorded from Changureh-Avaj (2002), Tehran (2003), Firozabad-Kojour (2004) and Kahak-Qom (2007) earthquakes, which have been occurred near to the Tehran city. Some of these motions recorded in rocky …

Students As Forensic Engineers: An Innovative Approach To Teaching Soil Mechanics, Benoît Courcelles, Lina Forest, Anastassis Kozanitis
Students As Forensic Engineers: An Innovative Approach To Teaching Soil Mechanics, Benoît Courcelles, Lina Forest, Anastassis Kozanitis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Civil engineers are everyday faced with multidisciplinary problems. Their tasks are not only related to technical aspects, but also involve ethical and environmental issues, economic considerations and, nowadays, international collaborations. This broad spectrum of aspects requires a strong technical knowledge, as well as many interpersonal skills and an interest in societal related issues. When traditional courses are simply adapted to the development of technical competences, introducing students to non-technical (although civil engineering-related) aspects remains a challenge. To remediate to this difficulty, an innovative approach was implemented in the undergraduate course of Soil Mechanics at Polytechnique Montreal. The originality of our …

Supporting Tunnelling Excavation Of An Unstable Slope By Long Term Displacement Monitoring, Francesca Bozzano, Paolo Mazzanti, Alberto Prestininzi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A complex multi-sensor monitoring platform for the continuous control of an unstable slope affected by tunneling excavation, was realized between 2007 and 2008 after the first collapse of an already built tunnel entrance. The monitoring system was made of some inclinometric and piezometric sensors up to 70 m deep, a topographic system, a Terrestrial SAR Interferometer, a weather station, a photocamera and some load cells installed on bulkheads anchors. The continuous monitoring of the slope during different working phases (planning of stabilization works, realization of stabilizations works and tunneling excavation) allowed us to continuously control the slope behaviour, thus guaranteeing …

Use Of The Observational Method To Verify Design Of Earth Retention Structures, Timothy H. Bedenis, Christopher G. Naida
Use Of The Observational Method To Verify Design Of Earth Retention Structures, Timothy H. Bedenis, Christopher G. Naida
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Two case histories are presented for earth retention structures where the results of construction monitoring were used to verify key criteria used for the design of the structures. One case history consists of a sheet-pile bulkhead structure for the unloading of bulk aggregate products in Bay City, Michigan. The front wall of the sheet-pile bulkhead was analyzed for heavy surcharge pressures from the adjacent aggregate stockpiles. The sheet-piles are laterally supported by sheet-pile deadman and tierods. Slope indicator tubes were used to monitor lateral movements next to the sheet-piles. The results from the slope indicators were then used to verify …

An Experimental Study Of The Drained Capacity Of Bucket Foundations For Offshore Applications, Lars Bo Ibsen, Amin Barari, Kim André Larsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Today, wind energy offers the most competitive production prices for renewable energy. Therefore there are strong political and industrial forces, especially in northern Europe, which support the development of the offshore wind industry. The present paper presents the results of drained tests on offshore bucket foundations for wind turbines in saturated dense sand. The bearing capacity of bucket foundations subject to combined loadings which are of interest particularly to the offshore geotechnical engineers, were calculated and found to be largely dependent on embedment ratios and load paths. Based on the results of the analyses, new failure criteria are calibrated for …

Analysis Of Plie Raft Interaction In Sand With Centrifuge Tests, Donggyu Park, Doohyun Kyung, Kyujin Choi, Junhwan Lee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the conventional design for piled rafts, the load capacity of the raft is not in general taken into account and the load capacity of piles is only considered for the estimation of the total load carrying capacity of the piled rafts. As a consequence, piled rafts are often designed with excessively conservative safety margin, raising a need of further investigation of the load capacity mechanism of piled rafts. In this study, a series of centrifuge load tests using model group piles and piled rafts are conducted and used to compare the axial load carrying behaviors of group piles and …
Axial Load Behavior Of A Driven Cast-In-Situ Pile In Sand, Kevin N. Flynn, Bryan A. Mccabe, Derek Egan
Axial Load Behavior Of A Driven Cast-In-Situ Pile In Sand, Kevin N. Flynn, Bryan A. Mccabe, Derek Egan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Driven cast-in-situ (DCIS) piles are a popular choice amongst piling contractors due to the ability to readily adjust pile lengths to suit the depth of penetration required. Despite their widespread use, there is a dearth of published data on the axial load behavior of temporary-cased DCIS piles, particularly in cohesionless soils. This paper reports the results of a static compression load test on a 340 mm nominal diameter, 5.75 m long DCIS pile in a dense sand deposit in Shotton, Wales. The test pile was instrumented with vibrating-wire strain gauges at various levels to determine the shaft and base resistance …
Bridge Foundation Piles In Varved Glaciolacustrine Deposits Exhibiting Very High Soil Setup, Gregory R. Reuter
Bridge Foundation Piles In Varved Glaciolacustrine Deposits Exhibiting Very High Soil Setup, Gregory R. Reuter
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A pile-supported bridge was to be constructed at a site in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, located north of St. Paul, in an area underlain by a significant deposit of glaciolacustrine sand, silt, and clay, which extended to a depth of about 39 m. For the geotechnical analysis, the conventional soil borings were supplemented by performing seismic piezocone (SCPTu) soundings. At the beginning of bridge construction, test piles were driven which experienced unusually easy driving to the termination depths of 38.4 to 40.2 m. High strain dynamic testing was used during pile installation and during restrike. After only a 2-day waiting period, …
Comparison Between Dynamic Responses Of Hollow And Solid Piles For Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations, M. Bayat, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
Comparison Between Dynamic Responses Of Hollow And Solid Piles For Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations, M. Bayat, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The offshore wind energy industry is turning out ever larger numbers of offshore wind turbines every year. One way to achieve a cost-effective design is to have a better understanding of the dynamic response of offshore structures. That is why it is getting more and more important to understand the dynamic behavior of soil and interaction between soil and piles. To avert damage to offshore foundation, it becomes necessary to identify and quantify the soil-structure interaction and the related damping effects on the system. In this study, a single pile is investigated by means of boundary integral equations. The pile …
Design And Performance Of Shallow Foundations Over Diagenetic Limestone Along The Arab Gulf Coast: Realities And Challenges, Waddah Akili
Design And Performance Of Shallow Foundations Over Diagenetic Limestone Along The Arab Gulf Coast: Realities And Challenges, Waddah Akili
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The near surface, highly weathered limestones of the southern shores of the Arab Gulf region have complex lithologies attributable to post depositional changes that have altered hard rocks into soils and some carbonate soils into a rock matrix. The matrix, often clayey, sometimes cemented (with gypsum, anhydrite, and /or calcite grains) is not a rock nor could be considered as a soil per se. These deposits are: difficult to sample in the undisturbed state, extremely variable in composition and properties, and are susceptible to degradation, particularly when wet. The paper presents typical geotechnical information from selected sites where these deposits …

Differential Settlements Of Cylindrical Steel Storage Tanks: Case Of The Marine Terminal Of Bejaia, Bahar Ramdane, Sadaoui Omar, Amzal Djahid
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The marine terminal of Bejaia is a zone of storage of hydrocarbon liquids. It consists of sixteen cylindrical floating roof steel tanks founded on a reconstituted and compacted granular fill. At the end of 1980s, after about 25 years of satisfactory service, the tanks were subjected to settlements, ovalization and tilting. Because of a distortion of the steel tank walls and jamming of the floating roof, a shear failure was evident and some tanks were considered unsafe for service. A comprehensive geotechnical investigation was conducted to evaluate the subsurface conditions of the site and to provide recommendations for foundation repair …

Geotechnical Site Assessment By Seismic Piezocone Test In North Of Denmark, Sarah Firouzianbandpey, Benjaminn Nordahl Nielsenl, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
These days cone penetration tests (CPT) have gained more popularity as an alternative to the conventional laboratory tests for subsurface investigation and estimation of soil parameters. Due to increasing interest in soil dynamics in the last decades, there is a development of CPT as a seismic piezocone penetration test (SCPTU) which provides shear wave velocity measurements simultaneously with measurements of tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs) and pore pressure (u). The results can be used for determination of deformation parameters of soil. In this regard there have been proposed different empirical correlations between cone data and …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Renovations of the MBTA Copley Station in Boston included construction of a new elevator shaft to improve disabled access to the existing Green Line station. The site is immediately adjacent to the Eastern façade of the historic Old South Church. The construction work required excavation support including a perimeter secant pile wall and a jet-grouted base plug. Significant ground and structural movements were observed during jet grouting, mainly associated with soil displacements during grout injection. A three dimensional numerical model was developed, using the Plaxis 3D Foundation™ program, in order to test the hypothesis that the observed movements of the …

High Capacity Rock Socketed Piles In Scotland, Uk, Peter Boyd, Baran Ozsoy
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland provides a 30,000m² ‘Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic’ (ACAD) facility. The ground conditions beneath the site comprise a variable thickness of Made Ground overlying Glaciomarine Deposits and Glacial Till which in turn rests on the Carboniferous bedrock. However the solid geology is complex and interrupted by a number of faults. The Carboniferous rocks under the site include a number of coal seams, although it is thought that none of these seams has been worked at this location. Due to the relatively low strength of the glacial soils, it was necessary to support the building …
Performance Of Driven Piles In Gravelly Sands With Cobbles, William S. Man, Yonah R. Halpern
Performance Of Driven Piles In Gravelly Sands With Cobbles, William S. Man, Yonah R. Halpern
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Steel piles are known for their high resistance to driving and handling, as well as their large lateral stiffness. Difficulty of driving depends on the subsurface conditions, pile type, and type of impact hammer used to drive piles. This case history presents observations of pile construction for a bridge widening retrofit in the city of Irwindale. The proposed foundations consisted of twenty seven 14-inch-diameter Caltrans Standard Plan B2-5 Alternative V closed-end pipe piles with quarter-inch thick steel sections. Piles were 35 feet in length and were designed to be driven piles. Subsurface investigations indicated the soils consisted of silty gravels …
Punch-Through Foundation Failure Of Oil Drilling Platform In The Deltaic Plain Of The Niger River, E. A. J. George, T. J. Atuboyedia, M. Oju, T. E. George
Punch-Through Foundation Failure Of Oil Drilling Platform In The Deltaic Plain Of The Niger River, E. A. J. George, T. J. Atuboyedia, M. Oju, T. E. George
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The deltaic plains of the Niger River are composed mostly of Pleistocene sediments. On the occurrence of low stands of the sea level due to eustatic changes, the sediments were exposed to temperature fluctuations during the Quaternary period, leading to strata sequence generated in these plains that allowed strong layers of soil to overlie weaker layers of the same age. Most of the onshore explorations for oil and gas in Nigeria take place within these plains of the Niger. A well was to be drilled in search of oil and gas in allocation within these plains. As often done, a …

Rotary Driven Pipe Piles For A 14-Story Building In New York City, Howard A. Perko, Michael Paquette, Marc Gallagher, Andrew Burns
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Rotary driven pipe piles are a unique solution for foundation construction in constrained urban areas. These piles consist of a closedend, steel casing with sacrificial drill tip. The casing and drill tip are rotated into the ground using a fixed-mast drill rig. Three hundred sixty two 12.75-inch diameter, rotary driven pipe piles were installed to support a 14-story building in the upper east side of Manhattan. The soils consisted of uncontrolled fill, organic silts, and peat over stiff, saturated, varved silts and clays. A novel mathematical relationship between capacity, installation crowd, and torque was used to develop initial pile installation …

Seismic Retrofit Of 92/280 I/C Foundations By Micropile Groups In San Francisco Bay Area, California, Mahmood Momenzadeh, Tung Nguyen, Phil Lutz, Tim Pokrywka, Chris Risen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Route 92/280 interchange (I/C) connectors are the latest major bridge structures to be retrofitted in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States. The presence of poor quality rocks and high groundwater due to the proximity of the San Andreas Fault at this site combined with low overhead of the connectors superstructure at some of the existing bents led to the use of micropile foundation system instead of a conventional Cast in Drill Hole (CIDH) pile system. The existing CIDH foundations were retrofitted at 5 bents by micropile group with very heavy column steel reinforcement additions and 11 bent …

Soil Movements Due To Displacement Pile Driving, M. K. Chong
Soil Movements Due To Displacement Pile Driving, M. K. Chong
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The effects of displacement piling are well documented with many cases of movements caused to adjacent structures and detrimental effects on recently installed piles. The author’s experience with dealing with ground displacements of raft piling in deep marine clays in Singapore led to the development of a method for calculating the ground movements to assess the cumulative effects of pile driving. The method is derived from soil mechanics parameters, principle of potential energy, strain energy and work done by the stresses in the soil undergoing a cylindrical cavity expansion process and the stresses in the soil undergoing large strains direct …
The Effect Of Quality Of Subsoil Structure Identification On The Execution Of Pile Structures For Bridge Supports, Maciej Kumor, Zbigniew Młynarek
The Effect Of Quality Of Subsoil Structure Identification On The Execution Of Pile Structures For Bridge Supports, Maciej Kumor, Zbigniew Młynarek
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Supports of road viaducts or bridges are founded predominantly on piles. This is determined by the subsoil structure and the location of the designed object. In certain cases the selection of the pile system is also influenced by the neighboring buildings and infrastructure. The design for bridge foundation in such cases needs to be based on high quality geotechnical documentation. Although this criterion is specified in Eurocode 7: PN-EN 1997 parts 1 and 2, binding throughout Europe, including Poland, frequently geotechnical documentations are not very precise and do not present an accurate subsoil structure, leading to building disasters. Such a …
