Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha Apr 1993

Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, a new technique based on analytic geometry for the recognition and description of three-dimensional quadric surfaces from range images is presented. Beginning with the explicit representation of quadrics, a set of ten coefficients are determined for various three-dimensional surfaces. For each quadric surface, a unique set of two-dimensional curves which serve as a feature set is obtained from the various angles at which the object is intersected with a plane. Based on a discriminant method, each of the curves is classified as a parabola, circle, ellipse, hyperbola, or a line. Each quadric surface is shown to be …

Influence Of Processing Techniques On Copper Deep Levels Formation And On Photoconductivity In Silicon Doped Gallium Arsenide, Lucy M. Thomas Apr 1993

Influence Of Processing Techniques On Copper Deep Levels Formation And On Photoconductivity In Silicon Doped Gallium Arsenide, Lucy M. Thomas

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Diffusion of copper in silicon doped gallium arsenide under different diffusion conditions is studied. Copper compensated silicon doped gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) is used as switch material for bulk optically controlled semiconductor switch, and on-state photoconductivity of the switch is primarily due to the properties of the copper deep levels introduced in the material during diffusion. Gallium arsenide being a compound semiconductor, presence of vacancies and defects make the study of diffusion a complex process. The objective of the current research is twofold: a) to study the influence of diffusion conditions and processing techniques on copper deep level formation in silicon …

A Performance Prediction Model For A Fault-Tolerant Computer During Recovery And Restoration, Rodrigo A. Obando Apr 1993

A Performance Prediction Model For A Fault-Tolerant Computer During Recovery And Restoration, Rodrigo A. Obando

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The modeling and design of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor system is addressed in this dissertation. In particular, the behavior of the system during recovery and restoration after a fault has occurred is investigated. Given that a multicomputer system is designed using the Algorithm to Architecture To Mapping Model (ATAMM) model, and that a fault (death of a computing resource) occurs during its normal steady-state operation, a model is presented as a viable research tool for predicting the performance bounds of the system during its recovery and restoration phases. Furthermore, the bounds of the performance behavior of the system during this transient …

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi Jul 1992

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation introduces a binary partitioned approach to statistical pattern classification which is applied to talker identification using neural networks. In recent years artificial neural networks have been shown to work exceptionally well for small but difficult pattern classification tasks. However, their application to large tasks (i.e., having more than ten to 20 categories) is limited by a dramatic increase in required training time. The time required to train a single network to perform N-way classification is nearly proportional to the exponential of N. In contrast, the binary partitioned approach requires training times on the order of N2. …

Bounds On Constraint Weight Parameters Of Hopfield Networks For Stability Of Optimization Problem Solutions, Gursel Serpen Jan 1992

Bounds On Constraint Weight Parameters Of Hopfield Networks For Stability Of Optimization Problem Solutions, Gursel Serpen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the presented research is to study the convergence characteristics of Hopfield network dynamics. The relation between constraint weight parameter values and the stability of solutions of constraint satisfaction and optimization problems mapped to Hopfield networks is investigated. A theoretical development relating constraint weight parameter values to solution stability is presented. The dependency of solution stability on constraint weight parameter values is shown employing an abstract optimization problem. A theorem defining bounds on the constraint weight parameter magnitudes for solution stability of constraint satisfaction and optimization problems is proved. Simulation analysis on a set of optimization and constraint …

Topics In Nonlinear Stochastic Control, Estimation, And Decision, Using A Measure Transformation Approach, Charalambos Demetriou Charalambous

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

We discuss topics in the theory of nonlinear stochastic control, estimation, and decision via a probabilistic approach using measure transformations and martingale theory. First, we investigate the problem of estimating a diffusion process using coordinate transformations and measure transformations, both locally and globally; this is the analog of nonlinear coordinate and state feedback transformations used to obtain exact linearization in nonlinear deterministic control problems. Our results are new in that we use a probabilistic approach rather than a purely geometric one, and also in that we derive representations when the processes are defined locally rather than just globally. A gauge …

The Modeling Of The Interactions Of Pellets With Magnetic Fusion Plasmas For Alpha Particle Diagnostics, Abdel-Ghafar Mahmood El-Cashlan Oct 1990

The Modeling Of The Interactions Of Pellets With Magnetic Fusion Plasmas For Alpha Particle Diagnostics, Abdel-Ghafar Mahmood El-Cashlan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model for the interactions of hydrogen and carbon pellets with thermonuclear fusion plasmas has been developed and solved to determine the charge-state spatial distributions in the ablation cloud surrounding the pellet. The ionization is treated in a self-consistent manner in the energy balance and the collisional radiative (CR) model is used to calculate the ionization levels. External plasma electron effects on ionization are included. The electron heat flux is modeled as a multigroup distribution. The channelling of the flow along the field line is treated phenomenologically by restricting the cross-sectional area of the flow. The predictions of the model …

A Comparative Study Of Spectral Peaks Versus Global Spectral Shape As Invariant Acoustic Cues For Vowels, Amir Jalali Jagharghi Jul 1990

A Comparative Study Of Spectral Peaks Versus Global Spectral Shape As Invariant Acoustic Cues For Vowels, Amir Jalali Jagharghi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this study was to compare two sets of vowel spectral features, formants and global spectral shape parameters, as invariant acoustic cues to vowel identity. Both automatic vowel recognition experiments and perceptual experiments were performed to evaluate these two feature sets. First, these features were compared using the static spectrum sampled in the middle of each steady-state vowel versus features based on dynamic spectra. Second, the role of dynamic and contextual information was investigated in terms of improvements in automatic vowel classification rates. Third, several speaker normalizing methods were examined for each of the feature sets. Finally, …

Experimental Studies Of Bulk Optically Controlled Gaas Switches Utilizing Fast Infrared Quenching, Michael S. Mazzola Apr 1990

Experimental Studies Of Bulk Optically Controlled Gaas Switches Utilizing Fast Infrared Quenching, Michael S. Mazzola

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation describes some of the properties of copper-compensated, silicon-doped GaAs (Cu:Si:GaAs) with the purpose of demonstrating the feasibility of the Bulk Optically Controlled Switch (BOSS) concept. The BOSS concept involves the excitation of electrons or holes from selected deep centers in the band gap of a bulk Cu:Si:GaAs photoconductor. The conductivity of the Cu:Si:GaAs crystal can be increased or decreased on command by irradiating the crystal with laser light of different wavelengths in the infrared. Photoconductivities as large as 1 (Ω cm)-1 were measured to persist for microseconds after illumination by a 7 ns laser pulse with wavelength …

Performance Modeling And Enhancement For The Atamm Data Flow Architecture, Sukhamoy Som

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model (ATAMM) is a new marked graph model from which the rules for data and control flow in a homogeneous, multicomputer, data flow architecture may be defined. This research is concerned with performance modeling and performance enhancement for periodic execution of large-grain, decision-free algorithms in such an ATAMM defined architecture. Performance measures and bounds are established. Algorithm transformation techniques are identified for performance enhancement and reduction of computing element requirements. Operating strategies are developed for optimum time performance and for sub-optimum time performance under limited availability of computing elements. An ATAMM simulator is used to test …

Implementation And Performance Analysis Of Numerical Algorithms On The Mpp, Flex/32, And Cray/2, Raad A. Fatoohi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of the implementation of a number of numerical algorithms on three parallel/vector computers. The object of this research is to determine how well, or poorly, a number of numerical algorithms would map onto three different architectures and to analyze the performance of these architectures using these algorithms. These algorithms are: a relaxation scheme for the solution of the Cauchy-Riemann equations, an ADI method for the solution of the diffusion equation, and a compact difference scheme for the solution of two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The computers were chosen so as to encompass a variety of architectures. They …

The Unification And Decomposition Of Processing Structures Using Lattice Theoretic Methods, David L. Livingston Jul 1985

The Unification And Decomposition Of Processing Structures Using Lattice Theoretic Methods, David L. Livingston

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that lattice theoretic methods can be used to decompose and unify computational structures over a variety of processing systems. The unification arguments provide a better understanding of the intricacies of the development of processing system decomposition. Since abstract algebraic techniques are used, the decomposition process is systematized which makes it conducive to the use of computers as tools for decomposition. A general algorithm using the lattice theoretic method is developed to examine the structures and therefore decomposition properties of integer and polynomial rings. Two fundamental representations, the Sino-correspondence and the weighted radix …

The Direct Summation Of Totally Self-Checking Checkers, Stefean Andrew Fedyschyn Jan 1985

The Direct Summation Of Totally Self-Checking Checkers, Stefean Andrew Fedyschyn

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new technique for reducing the complexity of designing Totally Self-Checking (TSC) checkers for m-out-of-n codes is presented. The method is based on the partitioning of the input variables into r classes, then partitioning the code groups generated into Z output partitions. Comparison with earlier results reveals improvements in design simplicity and logic and testing complexity.

This thesis also presents a new method of TSC checker design where a j-level m1/n1 code and a k-level m2/n2 code TSC checker are directly summed to form a max [j,k]-level (m1 + m2) / …

Block Transform Coding Of Presample Filtered Data, Thomas A. Shull Apr 1984

Block Transform Coding Of Presample Filtered Data, Thomas A. Shull

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the application of non-adaptive transform coding for bit rate reduction of presampled filtered data. Transform coding is examined as an alternative to conventional pulse code modulation (PCM) for multi-source, fixed rate data acquisition systems. Typical bandlimiting presample filters introduce redundancy into the sequence of data samples. Linear transformation of successive N-length blocks of the data sequence and subsequent binary coding of the resulting components is shown to lead to reduced average bit rate for the same less distortion as PCM.

Four Butterworth filters, two corresponding to eight bit PCM systems, and two corresponding to ten bit PCM …

Design Of Efficient Algorithms Through Minimization Of Data Transfers, Yong Mo Chong Oct 1983

Design Of Efficient Algorithms Through Minimization Of Data Transfers, Yong Mo Chong

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the time optimal implementation of computational graphs on a finite register machine. The implementation fully exploits the machine architecture, especially, the number of registers. The derived algorithms allow one to obtain time efficient implementations of a given graph in machines with a known number of registers.

These optimization procedures are applied to digital signal processing graphs. It is shown that the regular structure of these graphs allows one to identify computational kernels which, when used repeatedly, can cover the entire graph. The l- and r-register implementations of Hadamard and Fast Fourier Transforms using various computational kernels are …

A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim Apr 1981

A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents a method of modeling two dimensional sampled data systems with two sampling rates in each dimension. This methodology is applied to the problem of synthesizing two dimensional velocity filters using one dimensional prototypes and multirate concepts.

The modeling method includes the replacement of scalar z-transforms of signals by vectors of polynomials, and the replacement of scalar z-transforms of impulse responses by matrices of polynomials.

The synthesis of velocity filters is accomplished through the use of coordinate transformations in the z-transform domain which skew the ω12 axes on the unit bidisc. The filters synthesized using …

The Development Of A Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer And Its Application To Remote Sensing Of The Earth, Richard Forrest Harrington Apr 1980

The Development Of A Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer And Its Application To Remote Sensing Of The Earth, Richard Forrest Harrington

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The design, development, application, and capabilities of a variable frequency microwave radiometer are described. This radiometer has demonstrated the versatility, accuracy, and stability required to provide contributions to the geophysical understanding of ocean and ice processes. The design technique utilized a closed-loop feedback method, whereby noise pulses were added to the received electromagnetic radiation to achieve a null balance in a Dicke switched radiometer. Stability was achieved through the use of a constant temperature enclosure around the low loss microwave front end. The Dicke reference temperature was maintained to an absolute accuracy of 0.1 K using a closed-loop proportional temperature …

Precise Frequency Control Of The Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using Finite Digital Word Lengths, Timothy Peter Hulick Apr 1977

Precise Frequency Control Of The Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using Finite Digital Word Lengths, Timothy Peter Hulick

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

For an oscillator that is periodically swept in frequency between some upper and lower bound, the output amplitude may easily be made constant and therefore known with a high degree of certainty. The instantaneous frequency exists only at a point in time and therefore possesses a zero probability of existing at any point. This thesis deals with the development of a method for interchanging the probability density functions of amplitude and frequency so that the latter becomes known with certainty while the former is known only to the extent that it is within a certain range.

The method developed makes …
