Flash Memory Boot Block Architecture For Safe Firmware Updates, Hsiang Chi Nov 1995

Flash Memory Boot Block Architecture For Safe Firmware Updates, Hsiang Chi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most significant risk of updating embedded system code is the possible loss of system firmware during the update process. If the firmware is lost, the system will cease to operate, which can be very costly to the end user. This thesis is concerned with exploring alternate architectures which exploit the integration of flash memory technology in order to overcome this problem. Three design models and associated software techniques will be presented. These design models are described in detail in terms of the strategies they employ in order to prevent system lockup and the loss of firmware. The most important …

Broadband Rf Current Detector, George Cabrera Nov 1994

Broadband Rf Current Detector, George Cabrera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems to be solved in this thesis were 1) development of a broadband RF preamplifier to be used with non-ferrous current probes so that the amplified signal exceeds the errors due to cable pickup, no detection is needed in this application, and 2) development of a self-contained device that amplifies and detects the output from a nonferrous current probe, providing a digital readout of the current. These instruments have been completed and are being tested for use by the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The self-contained current meter operates at frequencies up to 600 MHz, and …

Gradient Based Fuzzy C-Means Algorithm, Issam J. Dagher Jul 1994

Gradient Based Fuzzy C-Means Algorithm, Issam J. Dagher

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A clustering algorithm based on the Fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM) and the gradient descent method is presented. In the FCM, the minimization process of the objective function is proceeded by solving two equations alternatively in an iterative fashion. Each iteration requires the use of all the data at once. In our proposed approach one datum is presented at a time to the network and the minimization is proceeded using the gradient descent method. Compared to FCM, the experimental results show that our algorithm is very competitive in terms of speed and stability of convergence for large number of data.

Optimal Kernel Development For Real-Time Communications, Monica G. Beltran Apr 1994

Optimal Kernel Development For Real-Time Communications, Monica G. Beltran

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to develop an optimal kernel which would be used in a real-time engineering and communications system. Since the application is a real-time system, relevant real-time issues are studied in conjunction with kernel related issues. The emphasis of the research is the development of a kernel which would not only adhere to the criteria of a real-time environment, namely determinism and performance, but also provide the flexibility and portability associated with non-real-time environments. The essence of the research is to study how the features found in non-real-time systems could be applied to the real-time system …

Myoelectric Signal Recognition Using Artificial Neural Networks In Real Time, Adrian Del Boca Nov 1993

Myoelectric Signal Recognition Using Artificial Neural Networks In Real Time, Adrian Del Boca

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Application of EMG-controlled functional neuromuscular stimulation to a denervated muscle depends largely on the successful discrimination of the EMG signal by which the subject desires to execute control over the impeded movement. This can be achieved by an adaptive and flexible interface regardless of electrodes location, strength of remaining muscle activity or even personal conditions. Adaptability is a natural and important characteristic of artificial neural networks. This research work is restricted to the development of a real-time application of artificial neural network to the EMG signature recognition. Through this new approach, EMG features extracted by Fourier analysis are presented to …

Fuzzy Special Logic Functions And Applications, Te-Shun Chou Mar 1992

Fuzzy Special Logic Functions And Applications, Te-Shun Chou

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, four special logic functions (threshold functions, monotone increasing functions, monotone decreasing functions, and unate functions) are extended to more general functions which allows the activities of these special functions to be a "fuzzy" rather than a "1-or-O" process. These special logic functions are called as fuzzy special logic functions and are based on the concepts and techniques developed in fuzzy logic and fuzzy languages. The algorithms of determining C(n), Cmax(n) and generating the most dissimilar fuzzy special logic functions as well as important properties and results are investigated. Examples are given to illustrated these special …

Microcomputer-Based System For The Study Of The Respiratory System In Newborns, Nelson Remberto Claure Apr 1990

Microcomputer-Based System For The Study Of The Respiratory System In Newborns, Nelson Remberto Claure

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A useful understanding of the respiratory system of premature infants and the factors contributing to different physiological mechanisms and diseases requires extensive clinical research. This project is the result of a need for a fast and reliable system to process the information obtained from biological sources and to obtain results from which different hypothesis can be tested.

This document presents a description of one such system and its different subsystems. It describes the biosignals of interest as well as the stages they have to go through in order to obtain an accurate and valid analysis.

The system is hardware and …
