Design Of Hardware To Aid Smartphone-Based Oscilloscope App, Riddock Moran
Design Of Hardware To Aid Smartphone-Based Oscilloscope App, Riddock Moran
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
A smartphone-based oscilloscope improves on traditional lab oscilloscopes in accessibility and portability but faces several performance limitations compared to traditional oscilloscopes. Among these, an oscilloscope app that uses the phone’s audio to read voltage signals will have a sampling rate and voltage bottlenecked by the capabilities of the audio codec, which will rarely exceed a rate of 48 kHz and 1 volt, respectively. Additionally, smartphones lack the ability to read line-in audio, allowing only one channel input through the microphone. Direct connections to an audio source may not be possible due to requiring an audio jack connection, and different poles …
Designing A Digital Electronics Lab, Ben Buckwalter
Designing A Digital Electronics Lab, Ben Buckwalter
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Hardware electronics tools can be more expensive than a new learner is willing to invest resulting in a barrier to entry. Furthermore, it can be difficult for a new learner to know where to start when learning electronics. To resolve this issue, we first explore current mobile app solutions that provide free electronics tooling. Then, we propose a design for a new mobile app that contains basic function generator and oscilloscope functionality as well as the learning resources necessary in order to guide new learners in the basics of digital electronics.

Defensive Industrial Policy: Cybersecurity Interventions To Reduce Intellectual Property Theft, Dr. Chad Dacus, Dr. Carl (Cj) Horn
Defensive Industrial Policy: Cybersecurity Interventions To Reduce Intellectual Property Theft, Dr. Chad Dacus, Dr. Carl (Cj) Horn
Military Cyber Affairs
Through cyber-enabled industrial espionage, China has appropriated what Keith Alexander, the former Director of the National Security Agency, dubbed “the largest transfer of wealth in history.” Although China disavows intellectual property (IP) theft by its citizens and has set self-sustained research and development as an important goal, it is unrealistic to believe IP theft will slow down meaningfully without changing China’s decision calculus. China and the United States have twice agreed, in principle, to respect one another’s IP rights. However, these agreements have lacked any real enforcement mechanism, so the United States must do more to ensure its IP is …

Myosins are motor proteins that hydrolyze ATP to step along actin filament (AF) tracks and are essential in cellular processes such as motility and muscle contraction. To understand their force-generating mechanisms, myosin II has been investigated both at the single-molecule (SM) level and as teams of motors in vitro using biophysical methods such as optical trapping. These studies showed that myosin force-generating behavior can differ greatly when moving from the single-molecule level in a three-bead arrangement to groups of motors working together on a rigid bead or coverslip surface in a gliding arrangement. However, these assay constructions do not permit …

Personalized Memory Transfer For Conversational Recommendation Systems, Naga Archana Godavarthy
Engineering Ph.D. Theses
Dialogue systems are becoming an increasingly common part of many users' daily routines. Natural language serves as a convenient interface to express our preferences with the underlying systems. In this work, we implement a full-fledged Conversational Recommendation System, mainly focusing on learning user preferences through online conversations. Compared to the traditional collaborative filtering setting where feedback is provided quantitatively, conversational users may only indicate their preferences at a high level with inexact item mentions in the form of natural language chit-chat. This makes it harder for the system to correctly interpret user intent and in turn provide useful recommendations to …

Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The advancements of quantum computers brings us closer to the threat of our current asymmetric cryptography algorithms being broken by Shor's Algorithm. NIST proposed a standardization effort in creating a new class of asymmetric cryptography named Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). These new algorithms will be resistant against both classical computers and sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Although the new algorithms seem mathematically secure, they can possibly be broken by a class of attacks known as side-channels attacks (SCA). Side-channel attacks involve exploiting the hardware that the algorithm runs on to figure out secret values that could break the security of the system. …

Using Bluetooth Low Energy And E-Ink Displays For Inventory Tracking, David Whelan
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The combination of Bluetooth Low energy and E-Ink displays allow for a low energy wire-less display. The application of this technology is far reaching especially given how the Bluetooth Low Energy specification can be extended. This paper proposes an extension to this specification specifically for inventory tracking. This extension combined with the low energy E-Ink display results in a smart label that can keep track of additional meta data and inventory counts for physical inventory. This label helps track the physical inventory and can help mitigate any errors in the logical organization of inventory.

Dual-Polarized Elliptic-H Slot-Coupled Patch Antenna For 5g Applications, Emre Alp Mi̇ran, Mehmet Çi̇ydem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A dual-polarized, slot-coupled dielectric patch antenna design is presented in sub-6 GHz for 5G base stations. Proposed antenna is implemented using two dielectric patch layers (main patch and parasitic patch) above a feeding line layer. Excitation is realized by crossed elliptic-H slots in order to create orthogonal ± 45$^{\circ}$ polarizations. Through the use of patches at proper heights together with elliptic-H slots, significant improvement in impedance bandwidth, matching level, isolation and front-to-back ratio is acquired. Prototype antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 18.5\% (3.23--3.85 GHz) for $ S_{11} $, $ S_{22} $ $

Learning Target Class Eigen Subspace (Ltc-Es) Via Eigen Knowledge Grid, Sanjay Kumar Sonbhadra, Sonali Agarwal, P. Nagabhushan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In one-class classification (OCC) tasks, only the target class (class-of-interest (CoI)) samples are well defined during training, whereas the other class samples are totally absent. In OCC algorithms, the high dimensional data adds computational overhead apart from its intrinsic property of curse of dimensionality. For target class learning, conventional dimensionality reduction (DR) techniques are not suitable due to negligence of the unique statistical properties of CoI samples. In this context, the present research proposes a novel target class guided DR technique to extract the eigen knowledge grid that contains the most promising eigenvectors of variance-covariance matrix of CoI samples. In …
