Effects Of The Psb-To-Ow Ratio And Light Intensity On Biogas Composition During Phototrophic-Assisted Anaerobic Fermentation Of Organic Waste, Kridsana Jirasansawat, Sirilak Prasertkulsak, Nitiwist Teangthai
Applied Environmental Research
The integration of phototrophic processes into anaerobic fermentation offers a promising strategy for improving biogas quality; however, the combined effects of the photosynthetic bacteria-to-organic waste (PSB-to-OW) ratio and light intensity remain unclear. In this study, the photosynthetic bacteria (PSB)-assisted anaerobic fermentation of municipal organic waste under varying PSB-to-OW ratios and light intensities was evaluated. An optimal PSB-to-OW ratio of 1:2 resulted in significantly higher CH4 concentrations and lower CO2 and H2S concentrations than the other tested ratios did (p < 0.05). At this ratio, moderate illumination (2000 lx) resulted in the highest CH4 concentration (68.2 ± 0.3%), compared with 1000 lx (61.5 ± 0.4%) and 4000 lx (63.1 ± 0.5%). Under illumination, the CO2 and H2S concentrations were lower than those under dark conditions, indicating a more favorable biogas composition. Kinetic analysis indicated that CO2 and H2S exhibited apparent first-order behavior under illumination, with the highest rates occurring at 2000 lx (kH2S = 0.093 day-1; kCO2 = 0.059 day-1), suggesting light-dependent transformation processes. Metagenomic analysis revealed a microbial community dominated by sulfide-oxidizing (Chlorobium sp.), photoheterotrophic (Rhodopseudomonas sp.), and syntrophic bacteria, supporting coupled carbon conversion and sulfur transformation. Overall, optimization of the …

Shm For Incipient Buckling Detection In Overloaded Structures Using Nonlinear System Identification Algorithms On Redundant Data Sets, Padmanabh Shridhar Desai
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Structural health monitoring (SHM) detects and characterizes damage to predict failure, but failures such as buckling, which are not predicated on traditional damage modalities, are harder to detect. Direct load measurements are costly and difficult to implement (especially for dead loads) as they require copious numbers of sensors, which must be installed before loading is present. Vibration-based detection is a good alternative because it can infer global structural characteristics with relatively few sensors. This dissertation presents an SHM approach for detecting incipient buckling in structures under excessive loads based on non-linear models fit from measurements of small lateral vibrations due …

The present work offers an in-depth assessment of solar still (SS) systems by analyzing energy and exergy performance, exergoeconomic factors (energy-economic factor, exergoeconomic factor, and cost of water), environmental impacts (CO2 emissions, exergo-environmental factor, and carbon credit gained), and sustainability indicators (energy payback time and sustainability index). Five different cases were examined: (I) a conventional solar still (CSS), (II) CSS with …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study presents a surrogate-based computational framework for the thermo-hydraulic optimization of spiral conformal cooling channels (CCCs) used in injection moulding applications. Sixteen design configurations were generated using Latin Hypercube Sampling and evaluated through CFD simulations to determine cooling time and pressure drop. Based on the simulation data, a Universal Kriging surrogate model was developed to describe the nonlinear relationships between channel diameter, helix pitch, channel-to-surface distance, and the resulting thermo-fluid performance. The predictive capability of the surrogate model was evaluated using leave-one-out cross-validation. The model showed excellent agreement for pressure drop prediction (R² ≈ 0.99) and good predictive accuracy …
